Newcastle Fans Look To Ambani To Buy The Club

September 5th, 2008 · 343 Comments

With the keen interest there has obviously been in buying Newcastle United, over the last year, we wouldn’t be at all surprised if there is renewed interest in a consortium negotiating with Mike Ashley to buy the club.

Anil Ambani - I’ve come to save you Newcastle fans!
Picture St. James’ Park in background

And of course that consortium could immediately get the full backing of the Newcastle faithful, by promising to bring back Kevin Keegan to manage the club, and also ensure that Kevin will have full control over who comes in and who leaves in terms of the players.  It would also help to give Kevin a nice wage.

It would also be good if Kevin had some transfer money to spend, since Ashley gave Kevin but £2M to spend during the summer, once you take into account all the outgoing players and the money we got for them.

There is a good article in The Times today that Reliance Communications, the Indian-based telecoms giant, will now seek formal talks with the Newcastle United Board with a view to a £220M takeover.

The Times also says that Anil Ambani, the owner of Reliance, has already identified Keegan as the only credible managerial candidate that can move the club forward.

He’s right there, and one reason the Newcastle fans are so upset at the complete mismanagement of the club, was the definite signs that Newcastle were starting to play the magical football they were known for, under Kevin during the 1990s.

There have been two wonderful games already that Newcastle have played in this season, starting with the tit for tat game against Man United, where Newcastle were not afraid to attack the European Champions, at least after the first 20 minutes, when we were over-run.

And the game against Coventry was a classic, where Newcastle looked fabulous in the first half before Coventry scored their first goal just before half time. But that game was magic as far as entertainment goes, even if it was a little hard on the nerves for the Newcastle faithful.

There is definite hope that Albani, who was first linked with a buyout of Newcastle last month, will come back in with a bid, and maybe the bid will be improved over the last time. This is certainly now a window of opportunity for someone to buy the club off Ashley, with the fans completely disillusioned with Ashley’s management of the club.

Ashley paid £130M for Newcastle in July 2007 and immediately wiped out debts estimated at £80M, and if you add another 20M for miscellaneous items he’s paid around £230M, so if someone bid closer to £300M, he may take it.

And that would be a good price because if Kevin is restored to take over the reins again, and has Newcastle in the top four within a couple of seasons, which is possible with sufficient investment in players, the club will be worth a lot more than that.

Sources close to Albani say that he is ready to revive interest in his favorite Premier League club, with Keegan at the center of an ambitious public-relations policy, which we think would work.

The world’s sixth-richest man boasts a fortune of £21B and it is understood that Keegan, could be persuaded to return for a third term at St James’ Park, and Albani would hand Kevin some transfer money, which the club has not been given under Ashley, although he has cleaned up the finances of the club significantly, to be fair.

Right now there is an opportunity the ploy would work, because it’s hard to think of a scenario where Mike Ashley would be welcomed back to Newcastle, with reports of him celebrating in a night club, as Keegan requested a face to face meeting with him. We don’t know if those reports in the Mail about the partying are true, but those rumors certainly don’t help.

Mike should know now that the situation he has created at Newcastle is almost untenable, and he has disgraced the club and the name of Newcastle United.

The sooner we can get a resolution on this the better, because it doesn’t look like Mike has any plans to actually tell the Newcastle fans just exactly what is going on, and he has proved, at least to most fans, that he isn’t fit to own our club.
Comments welcome.

  • 10 simon376 // Sep 5, 2008 at 22:34

I can see Keegan coming back if this can be done. Lets face it, it could be done very quickly. If it’s true what he said that he’s already paid off most of the debt, dudilligece wont take long at all. Whole deal could be done in no time, it would be as if Keegan hadn’t gone. He said he had unfinished business, with a new owner and structure, I could see him doing it.

why are we expecting a new buyer to pay over 70 million more for the club after the mess it has been left in ?
if mike even attempted to get that amount of cash out of a new buyer he should hang his head in shame .

  • 23 hj // Sep 5, 2008 at 22:44

wrong spelling ed! ambani not albani!!!

  • 24 cc // Sep 5, 2008 at 22:45

just seen a picture of ashley disgarcing a newcastle united shirt at a club in new york when all this is going on. just shows you how much he values our club.

  • 25 SouthernMag // Sep 5, 2008 at 22:45

Hopefully this can happen quickly, but as long as he has the best interests at heart, is in for the long term and gives power to the manager it’s fine by me. I don’t want aspects of the club such as the Academy to be ignored with just buying foreign players. It’s a shame this is the only real way to break into the ‘top four’ but it’s a sign of the times in English football unfortunately.

  • 37 valle // Sep 5, 2008 at 22:51

    trying again…

    Part1

People who thinks Ashley pours ANY money into this club needs to get a reality check. MA see’s us as an investment, which over time, can boost his other companies like sports direct through the sporting connection of NUFC and the free advertisement his company get whenever NUFC is mentioned.

  • 38 cc // Sep 5, 2008 at 22:51

    part 3

Well i would also use my OWN MONEY to clear the debt in my house so i could get rid of the interests, would that make me a hero?… Since then we have received loads of price money from the EPL and even more for the television rights, while our matchday income as well as the merchandise sales should more or less cover our expenses… Well we have spent all the 30m TV money on transfers then?…

  • 41 valle // Sep 5, 2008 at 22:52

    part 4

Nonono, we have actually ended up as a selling club, earning more than we use in the transfer window… So i just wonder, now that we are private, the club dosnt have to reveal our budgets, so who will ask MA where all the money has gone?… Are we a milk cow now for the poor man who had to use his OWN MONEY to get what his fat little finger pointed on

  • 42 cc // Sep 5, 2008 at 22:52

    part 2

MA has spent the money it takes to get himself his own private EPL club… Well boo hoo, lets give the man a medal… No one should be expected to use their OWN MONEY when they want something huh?… I bought a car last winter and i used my OWN MONEY to buy it, give me a medal?… And Yah he used his OWN MONEY to clear the debt of his football club…

this would be amazing, totally amazing, bring it on, keegan back, messi on the right, zog on the left haha, 6th richest man,

telecoms giant, is that fone calls and stuff, people will allways make telephone calls, unlike man city oil will run out!!! hahaha nah but if we all boycott petrol then they will be poor haha, we’ll be the best soon, get mr gates as an extra investor :P

really hope this happens, if ashley really did have the best interests of this club, then he would sell, rather than the bad future that looks to be ahead

  • 51 valle // Sep 5, 2008 at 22:57

i’dlove it to be true, but u think we’re stuck with MAD Mike and Dennis “he’s a dwarf, a dwarf” Wise i’m afraid.

Sorry but there aint gonna be a knight in white shining armour riding over the horizan to save the “Toon”

NUFC is a soap opera not a fairy tale………..this guy said he wasn’t interested when the story first came out and your clucthing at straws if you think its gonna happen now

still on the brightside, you never know Bin Laden might still be interested!!!!!

Ashley SELL….if not sack Llambias and Wise get Hiddink and spend your money….if not, its game over for you and your cronies

DON’T BOYCOTT THE CLUB, THE PLAYERS NEED US MORE THEN EVER………..BOYCOTT THE MERCHANDISE, DON’T LINE HIS POCKETS BUT ALWAYS, ALWAYS BACK ……………”THE SHIRT”!!!!

  • 62 ObaFan2 // Sep 5, 2008 at 23:06

cc, good for you and yes he does make me sick.

I hope this is true, Ashley cannot think of remaining at this club as he has messed up big style.

No new manager is going to be given time, any time, not until the matter with Ashley is settled and that time will be settled when he leaves our club.
A billionaire who hasn’t invested in the first team is a joke and we now know it and he need to go and go Quick.

Looks like he has an escape route but the worst thing is it looks like he’ll make a profit but can’t have everything.

F off Ashley and take the vertically challenged guy with you.

  • 64 dingo // Sep 5, 2008 at 23:09

WOW… check this quote from the article on MA in NY paying SPECIAL attention to the first 10 words…….. news travels fast when you call the media!!!!!

“They will stage a visual protest during the Hull match and are threatening to boycott Shearer’s bar, all bars inside the ground and some fans have cancelled direct debit payments for season
    tickets.”

  • 65 cc // Sep 5, 2008 at 23:09

@obafan2 can you believe that ashley only gave all in all 2 million to spend on players!! that is a disgrace he’ a billionaire for f***’s sake. This must have been his plan all along though get the money i.e long season ticket plans, selling best players. i think he will sell the club as i think that was his original intention. you protesting at the hull game obafan2 >?

  • 66 cc // Sep 5, 2008 at 23:11

That story has certainly messed around the betting.
All odds have been suspended (bar betfair) and there is no odds on keegan coming back been offered anywhere.
He was 66/1 earlier today before closing on 12/1 before the suspension.

  • 68 daiv // Sep 5, 2008 at 23:12

Its just the southern scum press winding us up again. Do not believe a word they write. We are so desperate we want to believe it!!!!
Mike’s careful husbandry, bringing on the youngsters, not spending any money and putting it in his pocket, is the way forward. Remember?
Gus and Dennis working together might just be the dream ticket.

  • 69 graeme // Sep 5, 2008 at 23:13

Maybe this time, Asley will see the “Big Picture” and realise he is finished.

Knowing a bit more about him, no doubt his greed will get the better of him and he’ll put the price up to £350 or £400 million.

Its nothing more than a business investment to him after all. The club, the players, the fans are meaningless to him. All that matters to MA is the profit. Money, money, money. No Morals, no scruples, NO CLASS.

  • 70 Gareth // Sep 5, 2008 at 23:13

It’s proven to myself that this whole sorry episode is more about the regime than Keegan leaving: MA has to sell - he is discredited and we can achieve absolutely nothing under him now. However, if given the clean sheet of a new owner, I don’t necessarily think bringing KK back is the best thing - it was a terrible set of decisions which led to him regrettably leaving, but he’s gone and isn’t necessarily the best man for the job now. The most important thing is that any new manager is operating under new owners.

Now overnight eveybody wants to kill MA. All the crap most people wrote is just suddenly forgotten. No acknowledgement that they were wrong.
One minute its MA is God, the next its kill MA. Just goes to show what most people know about people. The writing was on the wall all year buy you kids could not see it.

cc, will probably not make it over the weekend as the vibe is no one is going to be demonstrating, atleast thats what the press believe.
However if that changes and I hear of any chance to show our discontent in Ashley I will be there like a flash.
I don’t really care what the doubters think on here, I’m not neccesarily fighting for KK, I’m fighting for our club and our club to be succesful and value for money, something which Ashley has misjudged but KK got very close too.

oh yes i forgot that in order to be passionate you needed to prance around on the telly shouting nonsense and embarrassing the whole geordie nation with your ugly mugs. 52,000 fans fit in our stadium but only a couple hundred protest, If i could hazard a guess i think you youngn’s are fighting a losing battle

  • 105 mozza // Sep 5, 2008 at 23:35

i’ve said it before this thing is bigger than KK we’ve been shat on once to often, sooner or later the worm has gota turn, the reason the anger is so great is after shepherd, we thought that this guy may be our saviour, few pints in the blue bamboo, standing with the away fans etc, a lot of us bought it and to many of us now it reeks of tokenism, the longer this deafining silence continues the more restless the troops get, imo a large number of fans at this club are ready to explode and can you really blame them?

  • 115 daiv // Sep 5, 2008 at 23:40

MA only wants to make a profit out of this club and I have always wanted him out.
I have always liked KK and obviously wanted him to stay.
Here comes another Daiv contentious statement!!!
The passing of KK is no bad thing!!!
Firstly and most importantly because it will get rid of MA.
Secondly because KK was behind the times. Apparently he only wanted to buy stars like Henry and Lampard. He wanted to keep Barton and Smith. He wanted to increase Owens 110k to £140k a week. I can understand MA not going along with these plans. MA is a ….. Keegan loves the TOON and I love him but he really needed to be managing Chelsea or the new Man City because he was naive to think he would get that sort of finance. KK cannot work very well with a budget. He would be great if a megarich guy came in like the Indian but should stay away otherwise.

  • 116 mitch // Sep 5, 2008 at 23:40

  • 117 ObaFan2 // Sep 5, 2008 at 23:40

Ambani just needs to use a fraction of his fortune to invest into the club, it’s peanuts for him, £300 million + a bit of a transfer kitty and keep us up playing entertaining football.

  • 118 cc // Sep 5, 2008 at 23:41

Mr Noell Orll the only reason i protest is coz a know people like you who say you suport nufc do not bleed nufc like me and if it was not for people like me and obafan and others then we would not have the reputation as being the most passionate fans in the country.

  • 123 cc // Sep 5, 2008 at 23:49

cheers obafan2 a can see what peopel mean with KK but its the charisma and the belief he brings to the club and if that could be combined with a lot of money then i genuinley believe (if the Indian) came in we would have the bet manager in the world.

  • 124 ObaFan2 // Sep 5, 2008 at 23:49

the bit I disagree with is that I believed KK could make a good team outta not alot, he did want to try and mix experience with youth but unfortunately we’ll never know.

Wanting Becham, Lampard and henry wouldn’t have been my choice but it’s only the press saying it was KK’s.

  • 131 Gareth // Sep 5, 2008 at 23:53

@daiv - MA’s chance of making a profit out of this club are gone and he needs to cut his losses.

Also, re your earlier points, I have defended MA in the past, or at least played devil’s advocate, and I still maintain that a certain proportion of critisism of him and others in charge (I’m talking about you, dwarfy…) were unjustified. However, I have indeed now jumped on the anti-Ashley bandwagon, and I am willing to concede that he must indeed have surely mislead us on the subject of transfer hierachy etc. I don’t know if it was ultra-shrewdeness or distrust coupled with luck, but, fair dos, in many ways you were right (although more in terms of his cack-handedness than outright malevolence…)

  • 132 Nick 69 // Sep 5, 2008 at 23:53

thing is, although beckham, lampard and henry are getting old, if KK did want them, they wud ALL walk into our starting line up, no problem, and make us a much better team.

I just think that KK had only another two years left and wanted to win something for us. He is too old and a little out of touch and had too little time left to start nurturing players. He wanted instant success like the rest of us.(well like me at any rate. I’ve watched NUFC 45 years without a domestic trophy!!!)

  • 136 mozza // Sep 5, 2008 at 23:55

    KK FOREVER (Ross) // Sep 5, 2008 at 18:30

On a slightly better note lads, was listening to talk sport tonight, and a scouser called at around 5:45, and went absolutly mental at them for the way they’d be talking about keegan, and i mean he flipped. I sat up and listened to the point i can remember half the things he said. His best comments were the following.

“Kevin Keegan is a god. the newcastle fans love him. Along with scousers they are the most passionate people i’ve ever met, they love their football club”

“parry, you and durham are both the same. you think you’re always right. well you’re not mate, and the way you’ve slagged keegan is disgusting. you’ve never been in their position, they adore their club, you dont know what you’re talking about”

“Get kevin keegan on here as soon as possible to defend himself. because its all well and good you sitting there slagging him, and you getting the last word, yet he cant defend himself. get him on here, tell him what you’ve said to his face, and let him defend himself, disgusting”.

obviously that isnt word for word, but that was the general gist of it. he was an evertonian and he got really riled up about it. Even from a neutral standpoint people seem to be pretty ashamed of the board.
There was an email from a Sunderland supporter sent into sky sports the other day, also having a go at ashley and the board. he said fair enough he didnt like us as a club but what what they’d done to keegan was shocking and they should be ashamed of themselves.

From what i’ve heard, quite literally every single football fan says its a crying shame what has happened here, and i could only agree.

A week ago not many people had a bad word about Ashley, now he’s public enemy number 2 (after Wise)

The reason for this is Keegan leaving the club, if Ambani has learnt anything this week it is Keegan is unsackable, for that reason he’d never bring him back and risk putting himself in the same position Ashley is in now.

    Stolen from Newcastle-Online.

Who was it that was saying that Wise et al had presented him with player after player and he’d rejected them all out of hand? Sure someone said something along those lines.

    **Conspiracy theory alert**

If for a moment you contemplate that being true and you combine it with the infamous list - I know, but my natural tendency to simply dismiss anything in the papers has been dealt a blow over the last few days - then you’re left with a situation where the club was given the choice of:

Give Keegan what he wants and go after the big names, who would cost big, big money with little chance of ever getting any of it back, thereby going against the stated aim of the club’s transfer policy. Not to mention that some of them are probably fading stars anyway and many of them would never consider coming here in the first place. If this was the chosen path, then there would be a serious risk of ending up with no-one coming in at all and if some did they would be unlikely to represent value for money. However you’d probably know what you were buying as the players would have proven track records.

Go against Keegan’s wishes and bring in who “the club” thinks will benefit the team, namely young up-and-coming players from abroad for less money and on lower wages. If this was the chosen path, then there are risks too, firstly and most importantly that you run the risk of seriously pissing Keegan off, but also that you are taking a bit of a gamble that the players you buy will settle and be successful in the Premiership, as we know that’s not always guaranteed. However if they did turn out to be a success then we have a bargain on our hands a la Jonas and we can’t lose even if he decides he’s outgrown us and moves on because we make a packet on the deal.

It seems to me that we started the window using option 2, hence Jonas, Bassong, Collo, Guthrie and all the youngsters, but then something happened and everything seemed to grind to a halt, before we grabbed a couple of late deals on deadline day. What was the hold up? Why did things seem to stall in the middle?

Perhaps, and this is entirely speculation, that was the point where Keegan really laid it on the line that he wasn’t happy that no-one from his list was being brought in and started to reject anyone put before him that wasn’t on it. This might explain the numerous players that we were linked with where nothing seemed to happen in the end and the seeming lack of action until deadline day.

It seems to me that if this was true then at least some effort was made to get the players Keegan wanted, hence his comments and positive reaction to the Milner sale, etc, but for whatever reason that didn’t pay off, probably for one of the reasons listed above. Maybe that’s wrong and they just spent a few weeks arguing amongst themselves rather than getting on with bringing players in, but I think that the gap in the middle shows that at least some consideration was given to Keegan’s list. If they really didn’t care about what he thought then they’d have just carried on bringing in the players they wanted and I reckon we’d have ended up with a good few additional signings to what we had. I don’t for a second believe that it was anyone’s intention to not sign a number of players this summer, almost certainly everyone wanted to end up with a bigger and what they thought was a better squad than what we’ve got.

So as the deadline started to loom and the impasse remained, due to the recruitment guys either being unable (due to them simply not being for sale or not wanting to come here), or unwilling to spend the kind of money required, to bring in the players on Keegan’s list, I think that they may have just thought, “f*** him we need to get someone in, otherwise we’re screwed” and signed Xisco and Nacho whether Keegan liked it or not.

I think Keegan might well have been playing brinkmanship with the club over signings, refusing to sanction anyone other than the players he had specifically identified, knowing that the deadline might force the club into caving in and breaking the bank to get someone like Henry, etc, the club was either unable or unwilling to do this and eventually called his bluff by bringing in the two deadline-day lads. Whether that was someone acting independently or it was all part of a cunning plan, I don’t know, but I don’t believe that there was ever a conspiracy to get rid of Keegan. I reckon a few people may not have given a s*** whether he quit or not, but I don’t think the majority expected him to, certainly not Ashley, he wouldn’t have said what he said and worn that shirt at Arsenal if he did.

Keegan is either a very stubborn or principled man depending upon your point of view, either way it amounts to the same thing and I think he forced the issue here until it reached breaking point and the club broke and brought in Xisco and Nacho without his express consent and he quit because of it. Where blame should be apportioned depends upon the answers to a few questions:

    - Were Keegan’s targets unrealistic or undesirable? (The three that have been quoted definitely fall into this category)
    - Was there any effort to secure people on his list that weren’t covered by the above?
    - Was that effort sufficient?
    - What was Keegan’s response if it was? Was he realistic or was he intransigent?

I’d just like to remind you that this is assuming the two things stated at the beginning are correct and I’m not sure that they were. Also this isn’t about what happened after Keegan stormed out as we’ve discussed that to death now and I’m bored of giving my opinion on it.

    Whatdaya reckon?

found this in the shields gazette:

FANS posting on website nufc.com have come up with 11 ways angry fans can force the club to reappoint Kevin Keegan as manager.
Supporters are furious at owner Mike Ashley after Keegan, the man dubbed ‘The Messiah’ by fans resigned from his post last night.

Action for fans to take against the club’s owner includes:

    * Cancel direct debit for season ticket
    * Full boycott of Hull game.
    * Full boycott of NUFC games.
    * Protest at Hull game by entering late.
    * Silent protest at Hull game.
    * Turn back on pitch during Hull game.
    * Stand up protest
    * Return free club scarves to SJP.
    * Boycott of club products.
    * Boycott of Sports Direct - Mike Ashley’s sportswear business.
    * Direct protests at Ashley not NUFC

I think I’ll just go to the game and support the 11 players on the pitch, after all I support Newcastle United, not Kevin Keegan United.

He’s gone, it was his decision so get a grip and move on.

interesting post Little Willie, especially as KK wanted “proven premiership players” and “not South Americans”…….we got the reverse, implying KK had no say…………..

    Ashley Out!

  • 185 Mac // Sep 6, 2008 at 0:50

Right i want Ashley out as much as the next man but it isn’t goin to happen. And the Indian Fella is not gonna buy us in the near future if at all.

We need to cocentrate on getting a new manager (again) and move on. Ashley and wobbly eyes are gonna be here and there is nothing we can do about it. No amount of protests or boycotts are gonna change that. I have to be one of Keegans biggest fans, football needs men like Keegan however,I’m 29 and i supported the Toon when kk was here and when he wasn’t and i’ll continue to support them.

Football is a Fickle mistress, Man u fans were up in Arms after the Glazers took them over, they were gonna riot, boycott,u name it they were gonna do it, nOw look at them with another european title and numerous Prem titles, they are happy, more that happy, over the Fu^*in moon

Yes Wise is a tool and apparently Keegan only wanted Gutherie. To be honest is anyone dissapointed in Colo,Jonas and Bassong i know i’m not. We don’t even know what these other 2 players are like but 1 of them is a spanish under 21 international so e can’t be bad.

Look i know i am rambeling but if we get in Dechamps or however u spell it and just see what happens. I don’t want to ruin my Saturdays with pointless protests, I just want to watch football and watch Newcastle

at the end of the day, i support the team more than i dislike MA.

And make no mistake, i DO dislike MA as a person. Not because of the way he runs the club. In fact, i like the way it is being run. I simply dont like him because of his clear and present pretentiousness.
Pretending to be one of the lads, downing pints to score points etc

by the way, i will be at the match dondatta
