Keegan Lifted By Fans and Reaction Of Football World

September 6th, 2008 by Ed Harrison · 82 Comments

The Evening Chronicle believes that Kevin Keegan could be back as Newcastle United manager – if Mike Ashley sells out to any of the consortiums who want to buy the club.

Kevin Keegan - spirits lifted by fans and reaction of football world

As we reported last night The Times had a great article out that indeed Newcastle fan and billionaire, Anil Ambani may come back with a higher bid for the club, and he will re-install Kevin Keegan as manager.

Why would he reinstall Keegan? Because he’s not daft, unlike the current regime, who have dropped a massive clanger this week.

Apparently The Chronicle has heard there may be new owners directly from the Keegan camp, and we could believe that there has even been contact with Kevin himself from Anil, though that’s only a supposition from us, and we have no proof of that.

The Chronicle spoke to Keegan last night and, and while he did not talk about his reasons for resigning or plans for the future, he was very upbeat.

It seems that Kevin has been lifted in spirit by the magnificent support he has received from the fans – and not only in Newcastle but throughout the country, from other fans and managers.

We think the public, and not only on Tyneside, has seen the type of play Newcastle are capable of once again under Keegan, and it’s just great to watch. They attack the opposition all the time and their play in similar to that of Brazil – and that’s saying something. They also like to see Kevin on the sidelines, who wears his heart on his sleeve and is seemingly part of every Newcastle move with his body language.

He must be shattered at the end of each game.

The Chronicle say they revealed that Anil Ambani and his Reliance Group, alerted by the current crisis at St James’s Park, have rekindled their interest in buying Newcastle United.

While the billionaire will remain in India, his representatives are reportedly heading to England early next week to attempt a buyout of a Premier League club, with Newcastle United believed to be very high, if not even at the top of their list.

The Chronicle is rightly reporting that Newcastle are on a downward death spiral at the moment, and Keegan even referred to this after the game at Arsenal on Saturday, when he said:

“Once this football club gets on the march it is a pretty strong force, as has been proved in the past.”

“Of course, when it goes backwards it goes backwards at twice the pace and that is the problem.”

But it’s clear that the Newcastle fans’ reactions to the Kevin Keegan resignation is indeed having a significant impact, and maybe even in these days of big business and billionaire owners in football, the real fans actually do count – we’ll find that out very soon.

Comments welcome.

****Sorry for duplicate post, they don’t appear to be posting – Been trying since Friday morning..!

I’ve said it time and time again, the only thing Ashley will take notice of is a boycott - He’s only here for the money, and if he’s not getting that he will not stay - I am happy to sacrifice games to support the club I love with Tough Love. You supporters are to fickle – FACT! Your scare of missing out on the game, players are big boys and don’t need you there to support them, in fact they are more likely to react negatively towards Ashley.

As a true fan who has followed Newcastle all over the country and Europe all my life, I can honestly say…..I HOPE WE ARE BEATEN BY HULL, so that pressure mounts up on Ashley and Co. Call me what you want, but is how I feel!

As of today, our petition to oust Ashley and Co is well on its way to gathering 4,000 signatures in only three and a half days. At present, the petition is in the top 4 most active petition of over 2000,000 – Ashley I think that speaks for itself, GO!

We as fans must remain united to have any chance of forcing these out.

We can only hope the story is true. Most of the football world love Keegan and the way his teams play. We were everybodies 2nd team last time round, everybody including some Sunderland fans enjoyed watching the way the team played. If the story is true and they want to buy us, Keegan is their best option. Lets just hope it will happen

Well, we aren’t facing closure, but I’d say we’re in crisis…

    http://www.supporters-direct.org/page.asp?p=2074#

Are Trusts usually formed when a club’s in crisis or facing closure?

Many are, and the most spectacular successes and growth are usually at a club in crisis, where people fear their club could become extinct. That acts as a rallying call, and people make sacrifices that they might normally not make. However, But plenty of clubs aren’t in dire crisis, or even in any crisis at all at the moment. The crisis is the ‘future’ - who knows what tomorrow might bring - new owners, massive debts…

Football is an eventful sport, and clubs rarely have a period of settled calm where nothing serious happens to them. At these types of clubs, the Trust is an insurance policy against that day, should it ever come. If owners change, it’s there to remind the new people that the fans love and care for the club and their interests need to be protected and their voice listened to. They’re also there to be a vehicle to save the club should things go badly wrong, though of course no-one ever wants to see that happening.

“We have nothing new to say on the matter after denying the link last month”

  • 8 Toon Chicken // Sep 6, 2008 at 14:38

Ed, you’re getting carried away again mate.

Keegan’s win percentage was about 26% and while the performance against Coventry was probably our best during Kev’s ’second coming’ it certainly wasn’t anything like watching Brazil.

This is the only bit of good news for the last week.

There is no way ashley can continue on as owner, he is the most hated person in newcastle along with wise and Llambias. I think Ed should take their pictures down from the site, or maybe do a cameo look alike pictures.

    Private ownership ruining the EPL
    04/09/2008 12:42 PM
    Paul Gough
    Sportal
This week has highlighted the best and the worst of the private ownership divide that now dominates the English Premier League.

On the one hand Manchester City - the lovable losers of English Football whose last trophy was way back in 1976 - are suddenly dreaming of ending the dominance of the England’s big four of their fierce local rivals Manchester United, Liverpool, Chelsea and Arsenal.

And on the other hand West Ham and Newcastle - which like Man City are traditionally big clubs that have fallen further and further behind the big four as the years progress - have just had a reminder of how wealthy private ownership is not all it’s cracked up to be.

I’ve been a huge critic of the Ronnie Gill and Alan Oliver.

But well done Alan for the article, i just hope the rest of story has substance and the potential take off is not pie in the sky.

  • 14 Ian // Sep 6, 2008 at 14:43

I hope that it happens and Keegan is back in.

Ashley made a complete fool of himself when he floated his company and held the first shareholders meeting, they city couldnt believe what they saw it is reported in all of the business press.

However that is nothing compared to the total mess he has made of operating a football club, he has allowed the highest profile business he owns to be run by an ex-casino manager and a third rate ex footballer turned sometime manager and effectively mocked a very hard working and the only employee he had which added value to his business.

The worst is all of it has been played out in the media right across the World!!

Pictures of him drinking and partying while his business falls apart, no wonder no-one wanted to invest in his club, who would want to go in to partnership with someone like that??

Whatever little reputation he had after his business flotation has gone down the pan along with all of the beer and champagne he regularly drinks, an ex billionaire yob.

Short Term: New owners and a Keegan return would be nice.

Long Term: Billionaire owners who don’t really care about the club are NOT the answer.

    Fans should own the club.

  • 18 graeme // Sep 6, 2008 at 14:49

A take over by Anil Ambani would be great news, but, it wont happen ant ANY price. If they offer what they think to be a reasonable price, in their opinion, its still up to Mike Cashley to accept it.

Why would he be willing to sell now?? Well, he’s in deep shit back here, with most of the fans despising the man, but it doesnt seem to be bothering him too much at the moment. In fact he’s sleeping off a $200,000 piss up in New York.

Its already been stated that, because of business comittments, he wont be at SJP for the Hull game. He has clearly shown his contempt for the Players, the Fand and also KK in the way the last 4 days has been handled.

The ONLY way to convince him to sell up and ship out is for the fans to keep up the pressure on MA, his companies and his cronies.

The ONLY thing he seems interested in is MONEY. So, DO NOT buy anything that will give him our money. Boycott buying tickets, food, drink, shirts, sports goods etc etc. ANYTHING to do with any of his intrests needs to be blacklisted.

Thats the only way he will understand the fury he has generated by his total disregard of the fans and the only way to convince him that he will be much better off by severing all connection with our club.

    Mike, you aint wanted.

Kevin Keegan will always be a true hero here in Newcastle and the North East.

It would be a shame for him to leave football managership for good but that may be the case.

    “There’s only ONE KEVIN KEEGAN”

    Ashley out !

  • 21 Simon // Sep 6, 2008 at 14:55

Fans owning the club would be ideal, but impossible, as the amount of investment needed to compete with the top teams would run into millions.
It’s typical for Newcastle to be saddled with a scrooge billionaire .
Seems to want to suck every penny out of the club.
How about grazing cattle on the pitch at half time. Save money on lawnmowers and you could charge the farmer.
Oh….and Ashley….you are the worst thing to happen to Newcastle since the Metro started going to Sunderland.

In an ideal world it would be the best thing if fans could own the club, but where would the money come for the players we need to biy come from? There are so many costs that would need to be found and to be honest, unles a lot of very well off fans came about, I just cant see how it would be possible.

  • 27 Fans Should Own the Club // Sep 6, 2008 at 15:09

    Simon & Cooper–it won’t be easy. But it’s possible.

Others have been throwing around numbers to suggest how much we can hurt Ashley by boycotting.

What about re-directing the money we save from boycotting/reduced purchases of Ashley’s products into MEMBERSHIP DUES and INVESTMENT.

I for one can’t afford much, but would you buy a club membership at say 100 pounds per year? What about 50 pounds per year?

    I think many would.

Or maybe even different membership levels, means tested. Those who can pay more could do so.

These are all ideas worth talking about.

Anil Ambani was first linked with the troubled Magpies last month. Then his representative denied the claims and told Goal.com: ” Such reports are false and baseless. There are no such plans.

“Mr. Ambani was laughing and said that the guy who wrote this report should have at least asked him so that he (Ambani) could have said no.”

Now, The Times reports that Mr.Ambani is ready to revive his interest in Newcastle and will hand the just-departed Kevin Keegan, who he reportedly plans to reinstate, a minimum of £100 million to strengthen the squad next summer.

On Saturday, the official spokesperson for Reliance Communications Mr.Gaurav Wahi declined to make an official statement as to whether his company is keen on buying the Premier League Club.

Speaking to Goal.com, he said, “We had declined the link about a month back. So we don’t have anything new to say.”

Sources close to Goal.com have revealed that the club did approach Reliance Communications but the company is not interested.

Fans are try’n to get organised!!?!

There’s so many people arguing the toss over whether we should or shouldn’t boycott the game, I think we need to at least get this sorted.

I propose again a slow march from central stn leaving at 12pm before the hull game, followed by non-entry to the ground (or at least for the first half).

If anyone has any constructive ideas post them.

  • 36 MAG PIE // Sep 6, 2008 at 15:57

HPS - a march from Central Station is one of the better ideas so far. We wear NUFC tops on the march and we go into the ground as normal for kick off but change into non-NUFC tops. I do not want to boycott the match. If we can hit Ashley in the pocket by not buying merchandise from any of his outlets all the better. I think the march should pass a Sports Direct / World where we may wish to pause for a while!

  • 37 51times // Sep 6, 2008 at 16:03

MAG PIE - Why? That would just be bothering the people who work there, they haven’t done anything wrong. In fact, Fat Ash f*cks them on their wages.

  • 38 ToonIreland // Sep 6, 2008 at 16:05

LostWords, supposedly that has happened already with the crew that bought man city!?

but now the situation has drasticaly(?spelling?) changed, he is is a hated man, his chairman and ‘techical director’ are about as hated as him …

the hatred expressed against him might make him get out of dodge.

If he does sell to this indian crowd then maybe the last few days were worth it!!!

  • 39 MAG PIE // Sep 6, 2008 at 16:06

51times - I’m not suggesting any bother - just some pro Keegan chanting and Blaydon Races etc - no “f off Asley” stuff - don’t want to offend or scare the old ladies and young’uns.

  • 40 MAG PIE // Sep 6, 2008 at 16:10

I’m concerned re late entry to the ground - couldn’t NUFC prevent late entry?

I suggest the march from Central at 1pm - then we enter the ground at 3pm but stay below ground/in the bar area (no purchasing) until half time. We watch the match on the tv’s and if we score we celebrate. Imagine the noise from the bowels of St james while the ground appears to be 1/4 full. Then we emerge for 2nd half.

    Any thoughts?

  • 41 Ian // Sep 6, 2008 at 16:14

I think Wise’s premiership prospects for the future are nil, if he had any brains he would have tried to sort the problem to, if he had stopped and thought a little, he would have realised if Newcastle went wrong, his not so brilliant reputation would be shot too.

It seems as if everyone so far who is connected to the premiership points the finger at Wise more than Liambias!! He will never get employment again except possibly if he had a good working relationship somewhere before, but as far as moving up is concerned he is finished.

He will always be remembered as the bloke who caused the biggest fallout in the premiership and hadnt been in the job a year!!

  • 42 dave v // Sep 6, 2008 at 16:31

I have written on this thread before about Keegan returning under a new and ambitious owner.
Keegan is not stupid and he has probably been tapped by a consortium who wish to make us a world beating team, and has then confronted Ashley’s lick spittle’s to force a crisis.
He could see the club was being asset stripped for a sale and jumped ahead of their plan.
The whole world now sees how fantastic our supporters are, which of course is the reason Kevin is totally determined to put us in prime spot and the synergy to use a business term will be irresistible.
My only fear over this issue is anal oliver’s mad desire to sell his rag at the expense of the toon future if we enter an auction situation and Ashley walks away with more of our money.

  • 45 Paul // Sep 6, 2008 at 16:36

Not many consortiums would make the same mistake as Ashley and bring Keegan back. They would be too shrewd to make themselves a hostage to fortune the next time he didn’t get all his own way. If that happened then the whole miserable cycle would just start all over again.

  • 54 Paul // Sep 6, 2008 at 17:11

A.L 9 (52) Whether you like it or not, that is how most prospective investors will see it. As for Keegan, whatever the circumstances at St James’ this time, he’s walked out of every single team that he’s ever managed. This is not an anti Keegan rant, that’s just the reality and that is how he is seen outside of Tyneside, even by the people who like and respect him.

  • 55 IanG // Sep 6, 2008 at 17:19

If only fans could see how much power they have. We have to boycott boycott boycott. I only wish all fans could see past a few points or worrying about the players morale. It is obvious that if Ashley hangs on players will be even lower than they were under Fat Sam and that’s saying something.

A boycott is the only way to place real pressure on Ashley and force him to sell the club. Otherwise he’ll just sit tight presiding over mid or more likely lower table mediocrity while this blows over.

As for fans buying the club that is totally unrealistic - have a look around - notice that its a mega money business now, the days of cobbling together a few million and expecting that to be suficient have long gone.

  • 56 John L // Sep 6, 2008 at 17:34

    IanG is totally right.

Stop fannying about supporting the players, they’ll be fine.

  • 57 Paul Gadd // Sep 6, 2008 at 17:35

“If only fans could see how much power they have. We have to boycott boycott boycott.”

Waste of time, you are assuming that a one game boycott would do the job. You need to permanently boycott the toon or move onto another idea. I cant see people wanting to permanently boycott he lads, can you!
Big Al says the fans shouldn’t boycott and I agree. Another way of protest needs to be found

  • 58 John L // Sep 6, 2008 at 17:37

    To be clear …

Season ticket holder or not …

    BOYCOTT the GAME

It is the only protest that will get Ashley out.

  • 59 Kevin // Sep 6, 2008 at 17:40

Agreed with Ian and John. Ashley has proven that while Keegan wears his heart on his sleeve, the only place you will find a heart on Mike Ashley is in his big, fat pocketbook. The only place to hit him is IN HIS WALLET!! Therefore, the only appropriate and EFFECTIVE means to revolt is by BOYCOTTING ANY BUSINESS ASHLEY HAS CONTROL OVER. As much as I hate to say it, this includes Newcastle United and if that means we have to stay away and prove our point for a while, so be it. We’re in this for the long run, lads, unlike Ashley who’s clearly only in it to make money and run.

LETS SHOW ASHLEY WHO IS REALLY BOSS!!

  • 60 micepie // Sep 6, 2008 at 17:42

By the way, if Kevin is reinstated by a new regime I don’t necessarily think he’s the best man to take us forward long term but he is perfect for the next 2-3 years. I hope though that no matter what has happend KK is at least partly accepting of the long-term strategy that was/is being talked about at our club.

The KK 90’s era was fanatstic but fatally flawed so we probably need to be somewhere inbetween the long-term, careful-spending evolutionary process (buying young players with potential) and the 90’s era. That’s of course if the longshot of a KK re-appointment comes off. So if KK wanted to buy Henry that’s great - and exciting - but only if combined with the Xiscos, Tozers, Lua Luas etc, in my opinion.

I know that’s a very calm post in the wake of all the anger but I’m just trying to take a step back at how clubs should be run. Man City have just spent 52M on 2 forwards and ir remains to be seen if they are any better than, say, Xisco and Martins who cost a combined 16M. Even if Reliance took over and KK is reinstated I’m not sure I want us to take the Man City approach wholesale. MA and co still have/had a point even if they’ve taken it a little too far and reportedly in a deceitful manner without being honest enough with Kevin.

  • 61 stl toon // Sep 6, 2008 at 17:43

    Sorry for the duplicate post.

For what it’s worth from a Yank. Take a look at “This is How to Support a Football Team” on YouTube. I get fired up every time I look at it.

May I be impudent enough to suggest:

    I am a Newcastle fan,
I am a Geordie man (sorry ladies),
    I know what I want
and I know how to get it,
I wanna destroy Ashley and Wise,
‘cos IIIIII wanna beeeee at St. James.

Probably needs some work but you see what I’m getting at. A catchy terrace chant or two are probably the easiest things logistically compared to boycotts and ordering shirts. People will more likely start to sing a catchy tune than reach into their pocket for a couple of quid even if it is for a good cause. And a catchy and CLEAN tune will most likely be broadcast on the telly and radio and you can start singing it at gatherings and demonstrations leading up to the Hull City match Saturday.

Granted, it’s at most 400 supporters on the video as opposed to about 50,000 at St. James (a captive 50,000 I hasten to add) but it’s worth a try. You have City Council support. Maybe they can pass some sort of proclamation related to this or whatever you plan to do. That bloke from SkySports is lurking around talking to supporters, maybe someone can tell him about this or whatever else you plan.
The important thing is that you need to be at the pitch next Saturday supporting the players. They are probably not allowed to comment, but they are just as pissed off as you and not to blame for any of this.

I hope the Indian telecommunications bloke comes in and saves the day, especially if he’s a Newcastle supporter as I’ve heard stated. I hope also that Kevin Keegan comes back although I’m prepared to accept it if he doesn’t. KK has been my favorite since the late 70’s when I would see Liverpool play occasionally on the one hour of English football a week we’d get on the local public broadcasting station. The disrespect shown by MA drinking expensive champagne with strippers and Hollywood suck-ups while leaving a Newcastle Legend like KK twisting in the wind fighting for his job is reason enough to chase this tosser out of town.

Sorry about the length of this.

Good luck, Geordie Faithful. You have the passion.

Ed Speed for President (Obama an empty suit)

    ‘mon the lads.

My guess is that the senior players hope that we boycott the match too.

Take a worst case scenario … we boycott 5 matches and lose all of them.
So we end up in the bottom half of the table at the end of the season.
So what? As long as we stay up.
What are you expecting anyway now if Ashley stays? Seriously … are you expecting europe now?
This cr@p about “We have to support the team on Saturday” is really pi$$ing me off.
It’s a much bigger deal than that.
If you want things to change, seriously, then look past a few points or a few games.

  • 63 Michael12 // Sep 6, 2008 at 18:24

Keegan back. What do you want, do you want him to walk out for a fourth time. What the hell is wrong with you monkeys. Keegan is stupid and not worthy. No one will hire that quitter. He quits when things get hard he has a reputation of this. England he quit because he could not hire his friend as assistant, Man city he quit because ????????? no reason and now he quits because the board do not want to give him complete autonomy in transfers. What kind of demands are these.

To hell with your King Kev. The poorest manager I have ever Witnessed. I would sooner back Allerdyce than Keegan

  • 66 Dondatta13 // Sep 6, 2008 at 18:44

Paul, comment 45, This was a very long, drawn out public affair mate. Keegan was obviously lied to and the whole world could see that. If he stayed he would have lost all respect from fans, players et all.

He done the only thing he could and walked. He was being undermined at every stage. At the end he was being dictated to by Llambias. A non footballing entity.

If someone like Anil Ambani was to come in and give KK a free run, a warchest for transfers and some breathing room to work his magic, Im sure KK will do very well as manager of NUFC.

If after 4-5 years we havent won anything, shake his hand, pay him off and maybe move him upstairs.

Ashley seems to be nothing more than a bully. Just because he has vast amounts of money he thinks you can push people around….

    Ashley Out!

I AM NOT BOYCOTTING THE GAME !!!! i have already put my money in the clubs coffers so what will this achieve other than undermine the team. if you want to that is your right. i don’t that is mine.

  • 68 thefuturesbrightthefuturesblackandwhite // Sep 6, 2008 at 18:51

john l . we boycott 5 matches and lose all of them.
So we end up in the bottom half of the table at the end of the season.
So what? As long as we stay up.IF WE BOYCOTT NEXT 5 GAMES AND LOSE EM ALL DO YOU REALLY THINK WE WOULD STAY UP. WHERE DO YOU DRAW THE LINE. IF NOTHING HAS CHANGED AFTER 5 GAMES WHY DO WE GO BACK FOR 6TH ETC.

  • 69 John L // Sep 6, 2008 at 19:01

    @ thefuturesbrightthefuturesblackandwhite

Are you happy with what has happened?
Are you happy that a bunch of non-football numpties are making a joke out of Newcastle United?
No? So what are you going to do about it?

    Nothing, thats what.

If you do what you always do, then you’ll get what you always get.

    Stand up, man.

  • 70 John L // Sep 6, 2008 at 19:03

    Oh, and change your name…

The present is dark, and the future’s only bright, if something changes.

  • 71 Dondatta13 // Sep 6, 2008 at 19:04

Im very much in favour of the boycott …

The clapping seals tactic has been tried and tested and quite frankly I feel that is why regime after regime get away with it …. Remind me again how many years since we won a domestic trophy?

The last lot were caught red handed, calling our wives, mothers, daughters DOGS! They laughed at us paying over the odds for replica shirts and yet they got away with it …

Enough, is enough is enough…. Season ticket DD has been cancelled, I will not step foot in that stadium again until that lot are out on their ears.

I implore you, for the greater good of NUFC boycott. Lets get them out then maybe people will think twice before they take us for a ride in the future.

    Ashley Out!

  • 72 John L // Sep 6, 2008 at 19:09

    We’re the customers …

In any other business, if the entire customer base stopped buying, the business would do ANYTHING virtually immediately to get them back on side.

Why is this so hard for fans to understand on mass.

There are a few who realise it, but not enough to exercise the power that we have.

  • 73 thefuturesbrightthefuturesblackandwhite // Sep 6, 2008 at 19:21

I’M GOING. I will make my opinions known in the ground before , during and after.but support the team as i always have done.

  • 74 thefuturesbrightthefuturesblackandwhite // Sep 6, 2008 at 19:22

we’re not stopping buyingthough we’ve already bought.

  • 75 Simon // Sep 6, 2008 at 19:53

An empty St James Park at the Hull game would send a strong message, but I can’t see it happening.

We need to stick together, somebody arrange the Hull stayaway please.

    we are Newcastle UNITED

  • 76 kapteinen // Sep 6, 2008 at 23:46

This is a very bad situation for the club. All we want is a gentlemen agreement with an owner: “Respect the manager, respect the black and white army, and we will BACK YOU UP.” In terms of - not 35-36000 at white hart lane, 30 or so at Fratton park or Goodison - but 52.000 passionate fans at st.james` park. What can be better then that? Mr.Ambani, if this is true, please do whatever you can to buy this fantastic football club! Let`s be strong lads!
    And at last:
    KEEGAN! KEEGAN! KEEGAN!

  • 78 valle // Sep 7, 2008 at 8:06

Listen… I would love a takeover as much as the next guy, but it aint gonna happen… MA has found a cash cow and he aint letting go!… By making us private, he dosnt have to reveal figures, and in that way, he can if he should so wish, remove massive amounts to one of his other companies. Take for instance the transfer windows since he has taken over, we have used at net spend over the 2 years of about 8million. In that period we used to spend about 50 million under shephard. We did have a large loan, so lets say that of those 50 millions over 2 years, 20 millions where loaned (thats setting the figure high). Then there is 22 million that the club used to have for transfers that has suddenly disapeared… Where to?, well if MA can run the club on this budget, then he can have a company which every year gives him a profit of 10 million+ which he can move straight to his own Bank account… Nope, he aint letting go people!

  • 79 bill // Sep 7, 2008 at 8:49

Valle - Get real - who is going to stay at a club where he is hated and threats have been made against him and his family, etc.

He’ll be gone by next weekend.

Isn’t it about time Sir John Hall said something?

    No to boycotts.

Support the Club not the board.

    Pray for new owners.
