Lee Clark Like Any Fan On Keegan Resignation - Stunned!

September 6th, 2008 · 364 Comments

Lee Clark, who is now the assistant manager at Norwich City, where Glenn Roeder is the manager, is off to Toronto for his overseas experience for the Pro Licence.

Lee Clark - shocked by Kevin Keegan exit

Clark is being accompanied on the trip by former Newcastle player, Paul Stephenson, who is also on the backroom staff at Norwich.

Clark is as stunned as anyone at the departure of Keegan from Newcastle United, and he talked today to the Newcastle Evening Chronicle about the news:

“To say the four of us were stunned by the news of Kevin going is a vast understatement.” “We have all had dealings with him in our time and we could hardly respect him more.”

“It was the opinion of all of us that he was the only person who could turn around Newcastle United.” “We are all Geordies and, like all Geordies, we were very disappointed at what has been happening at St James’s Park this week.”

“Terry McDermott is my big pal, but to tell the truth I will not be speaking to him until things have settled down a bit when I get home early next week.”

“We have all kept a watching brief on St James’ Park, and I have to say it is going to be a very interesting game with Hull City next Saturday.

“It is going to be a very difficult game for whoever takes over from Kevin because there will be so much hostility towards him from the fans.”

Of course Lee is like any Newcastle fan, born and bred in Newcastle, and being one of those special players who also played for Newcastle United.

We haven’t heard the last of this story, so we’ll have to stay tuned on happenings over the next several days.

Comments welcome.

NUFC fans should be working on how to buy the club.

Boycotts and protests are well and good in the short term.

    What about the long term?

We should run the club, like Barcelona.

  • 2 Victor Meldrew // Sep 6, 2008 at 14:51

Fans. Rubbish but at least your posts are getting shorter. :)

  • 3 Fans Should Own the Club // Sep 6, 2008 at 14:55

Why is it rubbish? It’s done elsewhere. Why can’t we?

Of any club in England, we could be the one. We have the best support, as we all know.

Shorter posts! How’s this from now on:

    Carthage must be destroyed… and…

    Fans Should Own the Club.

  • 4 RobB // Sep 6, 2008 at 14:57

Fans etc. I think he trust might be the way forward. More and more supporters from other clubs will become frustrated that they are treated as cash cows by the owners and will want some kind of return to the ‘club’ idea where they are a part of things. Newcastle is barely a club any more - it is a business with guaranteed customers.

  • 5 RobB // Sep 6, 2008 at 14:58

Victor - quite a few of us on here like to see reasoned argument and new ideas. I get bored with abusive one-liners.

  • 6 Martin // Sep 6, 2008 at 15:04

Here - on the BBC rumours page theres an article from the sun that Keegan asked Ashley for 200m to buy Henry, Beckham and Lampard…I don’t believe it for a second but IF (and it’s a massive, humungus, ginormous IF)…IF…Keegan did ask for it, then I’m glad he’s gone - ’cause is exactly the wrong direction for this club!

  • 7 toonoot // Sep 6, 2008 at 15:11

    RobB/Henry Kissenger: D0n’t you understand what a :) represents?

  • 8 Cooper // Sep 6, 2008 at 15:11

    @ Fans own the club

Mate stop posting! - ehat you are suggesting is ridiculous!!

10 grand per fan? all them rampers from the bedsheet brigade outside s.t jamses?!?!

even if any fans anywhere took over any club - there is no money for transfers etc etc

    please just drop it!

  • 9 RobB // Sep 6, 2008 at 15:16

Toonoot - I do, but the point stands.

Cooper - I agree with you on fans ownership - I think its too late for that. But a supporters trust could act like a kind of union for fans and co-ordinate views.

  • 10 Fans Should Own the Club // Sep 6, 2008 at 15:16

Nobody is talking about 10 grand per fan. Use your imagination, man.

How many NUFC fans are out there? How many of them would be proud to be members at a reasonable rate?

And with membership be able to vote on the presidency and direction of the club instead of letting someone who doesn’t care about the club run it as his own personal playground.

Yes it’s difficult and would take work. But isn’t it better than gnashing your teeth at invisible billionaires?

    Carthage Must Be Destroyed. And…

    Fans Should Own the Club.

There is no way that the fans could buy the club, the maths are astronomical.
What would be possible would be for us to do a Wimbledon, but that would mean starting from scratch and it taking quiet a few years to even get to League status. It would also need a total boycott of St James Park, which somehow is something I do not see happening.

  • 13 Isaac Hunt // Sep 6, 2008 at 15:24

RobB. Carthage was destroyed! It happened during the third Punic War. The war was a much smaller engagement than the two previous ones and basically consisted of the destruction of Cathage, plus the annexation of all remaining Carthaginian territory by Rome and the death or enslavement of the entire Carthaginian population. The war ended Carthage’s independence. But what do I know? I’m just a thick Hunt.

  • 14 Warwick Toon // Sep 6, 2008 at 15:26

This fan’s trust idea is pie in the sky

Say you could find 100,000 avid (adult) Newcastle fans

Money needed to buy out Ashley and provide ongoing funding for the club might be something like 400 million

That’s £4000 from every single person

People can’t even pay their own mortgages - there is no chance of this working

  • 15 RobB // Sep 6, 2008 at 15:26

    Isaac. Thanks. Point taken.

    Dan - good spot!

  • 16 Victor Meldrew // Sep 6, 2008 at 15:27

  • 17 HATE PRAWN SANDWICHES // Sep 6, 2008 at 15:27

I got this from the evening chronicle forum!!

Fans are try’n to get organised!!?!

There’s so many people arguing the toss over whether we should or shouldn’t boycott the game, I think we need to at least get this sorted.

I propose again a slow march from central stn leaving at 12pm before the hull game, followed by non-entry to the ground (or at least for the first half).

If anyone has any constructive ideas post them.

    TELL EVERYONE YOU KNOW!!

  • 18 Fans Should Own the Club // Sep 6, 2008 at 15:28

Bill F–thanks for responding. That’s the kind of conversation we should be having.

Fan ownership is definitely a hard slog. But I don’t believe it’s impossible.

Everyone’s first reaction to a big idea is “That’s impossible,”

    then “That’s too difficult…,”

    then “that’s difficult…”

then, “Maybe we can pull it off…”

It’s not my idea–it’s an old one that’s been around for years.

Other SPECIAL clubs do it and do it well.

NUFC, if any club in England, is a special club.

    It could be done.

    Carthage must be destroyed. And…

    Fans should own the club.

  • 19 HATE PRAWN SANDWICHES // Sep 6, 2008 at 15:30

to all fans what ever your choice! we should meet up at central station and march to sjp singing our hearts out waving our banners!!! 12noon before the hull game next saturday!!

  • 20 Isaac Hunt // Sep 6, 2008 at 15:31

    Warwick:

“This fan’s trust idea is pie in the sky”

So you’ve gone off airy pie have you?

    :)

  • 21 RobB // Sep 6, 2008 at 15:32

I’m getting lost here - is Carthage the club or the board?! Or are Isaac and Fans etc talking at cross purposes?

  • 22 RobB // Sep 6, 2008 at 15:34

HPS - if we had a more organised forum/ trust etc this could be organised more effectively. Perhaps Toon Ultras could set it up and people could join on the way.

Hey Warwick–fair point. It’s a lot of money.

I don’t know enough about how Barcelona does it, but I know memberships don’t cost 4,000 pounds! I certainly can’t afford that.

There must be levels of membership. Anybody know?

Exactly the kind of questions we need to ask & answer to start making it happen…

Carthage (fat billionaire ownership) must be destroyed. And…

    Fans should own the club.

  • 25 Isaac Hunt // Sep 6, 2008 at 15:43

RobB - I think that Fans etc is saying:

“Basically Rome (MA) won - at first ”

While Rome (MA) was the indisputable master of the western world (charva gear), her rapid growth, accompanied with opportunity for corruption and economic disparity among the classes would lead to new problems for the empire. Additionally, the massive amount of slave labor imported from Africa, Spain and the east created a new economy dependency on continuing slavery (hmmm). These conditions would ultimately be major factors in the crumbling of the Roman political system and the terrible strife between the Patricians, Equestrian order and the common Plebes . With the defeat of Carthage, Rome inherited an empire but it ultimately set about the fall of its own Republic (MA out).

    But that’s just my take

If you want to take the Carthage analogy further, it was after the Elite rulers decided to dispense with their manager (Hannibal) that they succumbed to the might of Rome. Although it was much more complex than that.

    Shoot his Wife

    Set fire to his house

    Shoot Himself

Possibly the best solution to the Ashley Debate.

  • 38 MAG PIE // Sep 6, 2008 at 16:21

I’m concerned re late entry to the ground - couldn’t NUFC prevent late entry?

I suggest the march from Central at 1pm - then we enter the ground at 3pm but stay below ground/in the bar area (no purchasing) until half time. We watch the match on the tv’s and if we score we celebrate. Imagine the noise from the bowels of St james while the ground appears to be 1/4 full. Then we emerge for 2nd half.

    Any thoughts?

  • 39 MAG PIE // Sep 6, 2008 at 16:23

HPS - I’m all for the march but a 1pm start would mean more people would be able and willing to join in. Also we could time our arrival at SJP closer to kick off meaning no disorganised drifting away from the protest.

    1pm lads?

  • 44 HATE PRAWN SANDWICHES // Sep 6, 2008 at 16:41

we need to use the media to help us with all of our protests ,demonstrations etc we need to keep it in the public eye!! the march imo would be one of the better ones!! everyone of our fans can choose what they want to do!! as it is all support! but we must keep it peaceful!!!

  • 45 Desmond - GoalSnip.com // Sep 6, 2008 at 16:44

Duh. No doubt anyone won’t be surprised.

Owners always create problems. Mourinho could have stay with Chelsea if not for Abramovich. So do Keegan with Ashley.

  • 46 MAG PIE // Sep 6, 2008 at 16:44

    from NUFC.COM

“Initial threats to boycott the Hull game are being followed by further fan similar communications - although they are firmly in the minority, with most of those emailing us intent on being loud and proud in SJP next Saturday.”

We must drop the boycott idea because we mustn’t be seen to be disunited. We have to agree action and show an ability to organise that will send a clear message to Ashley

I say we march on SJP but attend the game.

  • 47 Graham // Sep 6, 2008 at 16:46

MagPie - I agree, this going in late thing could backfire on us. A 1pm start at Central Station sounds good with a slow walk to SJP.

Not sure if 50000 could fit in the bar areas though.

We need any protest to be peacful though. Any bother or pitch invasions will only give more of a negative signal to any potential buyers.

  • 48 happy toon // Sep 6, 2008 at 16:46

  • 49 MAG PIE // Sep 6, 2008 at 16:47

Sorry guy’s I hear as well as understand what you say, but my morals and love for the club will not allow me to enter the ground, until Keegan is reinstated or Ashley and his cohorts leave - I will march with you, I will also wear a bright orange T-Shirt over the stripes, but I will remain outside the ground and try and show the media we are not all fickle and do indeed carry out what we say.

I’m not going to talk about Keegan’s replacement no more. I only want Keegan to be reinstated. Whoever comes in to manage won’t be welcome on Tyneside by me – END OF!

B&WB - it’s not about morals mate - it’s what will be most effective. I agree - Keegan is our next Manager - I wouldn’t accept ANYONE else. If we partially boycott it will be seen as disunity and disorganisation amongst our ranks and Ashley will think he can ride this out.

Shearer has said we should support the team.

Hull sites are saying they can take advantage and nick 3 points.

Lets make it a slow march to SJP and fortress SJP.

  • 56 Graham // Sep 6, 2008 at 16:55

Black & White Blood - The players (or most of them) are just as p****d off with Ashley as we are. But they are the ones going out on the pitch in their black & white. Our black & white.

They are innocent in this - as are we. But they still need our support. It is the players we support. Yes Keegan is a massive influence, but we need to ensure that the 11 players out there on Saturday feel as if they belong. They were all up for sale on Monday now we should support them!

****Sorry for duplicate post, they don’t appear to be posting – Been trying since Friday morning..!

I’ve said it time and time again, the only thing Ashley will take notice of is a boycott - He’s only here for the money, and if he’s not getting that he will not stay - I am happy to sacrifice games to support the club I love with Tough Love. You supporters are to fickle – FACT! Your scare of missing out on the game, players are big boys and don’t need you there to support them, in fact they are more likely to react negatively towards Ashley.

As a true fan who has followed Newcastle all over the country and Europe all my life, I can honestly say…..I HOPE WE ARE BEATEN BY HULL, so that pressure mounts up on Ashley and Co. Call me what you want, but is how I feel!

As of today, our petition to oust Ashley and Co is well on its way to gathering 4,000 signatures in only three and a half days. At present, the petition is in the top 4 most active petition of over 2000,000 – Ashley I think that speaks for itself, GO!

We as fans must remain united to have any chance of forcing these out.

This is a tough one. I agree with the sentiment of boycott, but I also think 50,000 people in unison chanting “Ashley Out” would also have a large effect.

A couple of bloggers have said that they would follow the general concensus. I believe this to be the best course of action. If the majority say “boycott”, I will do this. If it means turning up after 15 minutes, I will do this as well.

I just think that any protest must be in unison to have an effect.

A match boycot is not the answer for the reasons given we must show solidarity with the team. What everyonme must do though is to STOP buying any merchandise around (sports Direct shos etc and NUFC stores) or in the ground no refreshments, programmes or visits to the shop. Just in case why not arrange a massive demonstration in the shop so that nobody can buy anything just in case, no rowdieness is required jsut enough bodies to blosk the tills and entrances. The amount of money taken on match day may be insignificant but if carried out every match day would hit Ashley in the pocket as he has to pay upfront for these things. Even if the store is a franchise the owner will not be too chuffed paying arental to Ashley and making no income so he would start to shout also. The march if peaceful is a great idea, but let us into the ground to support the boys. No good demonstrating at half time the fat one will be downstairs supping even more champagne that is if he and the poisoned dwarf are even at the match which I somehow doubt. They will pretend nothing is happening until it all dies down, we cannot allow it to die down. Also a civilised demonstration and total support for the team will show any potential buyer that we are passionate and supportive and not the mindless morons the southern press portray us as. Not too sure about the orange ‘T’ shirts but like the all black idea as most people have access to something all black. We need 3 points against Hull to make SJP the fortress it should be and we are part of that fortress. Chants in support of the team and chants against the fat one and his cohorts should be the order of the day a non stop cacophony of sound for every second of the game. Normally there are silent or quiet spells there should be no such thing on Saturday it should either be ear splitting chants supporting the team or deriding the fat one and his cohorts. Those who have destroyed their season tickets should get copies from the office we need them in the ground and supporting our action. Those without season tickets DO NOT BUY CASH TICKETS ON do not give the fat one any more money from ticket sales or anything else. Also we must stay within the law of the land to have the greatest effect so you may need permission for a march as the police could break it up, woth asking I am sure permission would be given if it were shown to be stewarded and peaceful.

a boycott of the hull game is the only thing that will make worldwide news - especially if there are 50000 fans outside the ground singing.
any “fans” saying that we should go in and support the club are deluding themselves or just scared of wasting the entry fee

the players will be well aware of the feeling we have for the club and ashley and co well aware of the depth of feeling against him and his cronies.

  • 88 Black and White Blood // Sep 6, 2008 at 17:55

Graham (post 71) – Mate, I know you are a genuine fan who cares about his club dearly. I’ve read your post during the past 12 months, and your loyalties not in question at all. However, I just believe fans feel they have a duty to support their club through thick and thin, which doesn’t wash with me. I would rather suffer the humiliation of a defeat by Hull as well as an awful team performance – this in my eyes will show Ashley how important Keegan was to the club – If the team go out and put on a one off wonder show how does that benefit us to alter the regime..?

Let’s be honest the players are paid handsomely to perform, however, I’ve not heard of any players coming out and supporting our fans who have battled against these treacherous conditions to voice their concerns.

Support the team 100% for 90 mins, then after the game, some kind of protest, sit in?

Lets be honest guy’s - Do you really think Ashley will be there…? I don’t…..Instead, on national TV, it will look like we are all just talk if fans enter the ground - come on get some self respect and stand up for your club.

  • 98 ObaFan2 // Sep 6, 2008 at 18:29

We all need to continue to protest thats for sure and however you think neccesary for yourself.

I personally will be vocal outside SJP and will continue to use the press as they use us.

What we all can do is not buy anything from SJP, drinks, food, merchandise etc. Season ticket holders have their own choice if they wish to attend the match or not and I am happy for them to do either.

BUT don’t give the fatman anymore money than neccesary and hit him where it hurts in his wallet and anti Ashley publicity.

ObaFan2 - Don’t get disillusioned mate, I deleted them to maintain its authority - someone was signing the petition with stupid aliases, I suspect it was Nando - Either way they will not be show when it is delivered.

In the end we all love the club, and will ultimately do what we believe to be correct - we must respect each others wishes, but remain united in our end goal - As I’ve said many times before, I’ve been a season ticket holder since Ossie Ardiles - Whether Ashley has my money or not is irrelevant to me, I’d rather show him that he can not bully me, on the other hand, my dad has a season ticket and he’s protesting inside the stadium…!

    This is interesting though…

I think that it is going to be very difficutl to reach Ashley with our thoughts. The only thing is to do something at the next game at home vs. Hull City.

I would love to be there and take part of the protests that will be taken, but I live in Belgium so it won’t be possible.

I think a marsh from the central station to the stadium would be a great idea and then if it could be possible continue this by staying outside the stadium for 1 half or so.
VERY IMPORTANT IS THAT EVERYTHING IS PEACEFUL! If people want to enter the stadium then let them go, cause it is the decision of the persons that counts.

A second thing would be all going into the stadium and then roll on a banner as big as possible ‘Ashley out’ or a banner with the face of KK on it. And then all the Geordies start to sing ‘Ashley, Lliambas and Wise out’.

Something has to be done, cause otherwise the possibility that something at our beloved clubs changes will be very slim.

England is so pathetic with their chances, no shots on goal so far if my eyes are awake (its 3am here).

Owen could have gotten a brace.

What I can’t believe is that it feels like yestersay I saw the announcement on Sky Sports that Keegan was back after having sore eyes awaiting our fate after Fat Sam went. I thought the only sore eyes and disappointment I’d have at the moment was around the transfer window. And now it’s back to square one. If only our signings and lack of signings was our biggest worry now!

    re: hitman

aye, but if he does appoint someone, it makes a takeover unlikely or alot trickier……..i hate all this confusion this new regieme at NUFC have created!!

how hard is it to communicate with the fans

  • 196 dick // Sep 6, 2008 at 19:56

Nothing will be done, no marches from the central, no walk outs,no everybody wearing KK masks and orange shirts, about 5 or 6 thousand will not bother going to match, a couple will run on pitch in front of the toon bench and rip up their season tickets and be banned for life and that will be it. It’s all talk by a bunch of kids and half-wits. I’ve seen this loads of times, seen toon relagated 3 times, seen 17 different managers, almost went into third division one year. For christ sake we had a fu****g school teacher for a manager for a season or two, for f*** sake grow up and get a life the lot of you

  • 197 Dan13 // Sep 6, 2008 at 19:59

anyone know where i can buy a big bit of board for the match?????

  • 198 hitman // Sep 6, 2008 at 20:00

  • 199 Dan13 // Sep 6, 2008 at 20:00

  • 201 Black and White Blood // Sep 6, 2008 at 20:02

How is Wise in this role - Who in there right mind would opt for Wise over King GOD…?

Does anyone else think that Derek Llambias looks like….No I better not say….I’ll get into too much trouble; he might have my legs blown off!

This man is an ignoramus, an insult to civil society. Furthermore, I was unaware of his alleged involvement in a conspiracy to murder and defraud. Brilliant, just the type of fellows we want running our club. The coward who assaults a defensive taxi driver, a conspirator to murder and then, well what more can I say…Mike Ashley!

    I must stress alleged..!!!
