Poyet Being Courted But Newcastle Fans Don’t Care

September 7th, 2008 by Ed Harrison · 329 Comments

Gus Poyet looks to be the favorite to be offered the chance to fill the Newcastle manager job left by Kevin Keegan’s shock departure from Newcastle.

Gus Poyet - favorite to take over at Newcastle

But the choice of Poyet, who is a big friend of Dennis Wise, and was the assistant manager under Wise at Leeds United, and is now at Tottenham, is unlikely to be met with any excitement at all by Newcastle fans.

Dennis Wise is not liked at Newcastle, and more of his associates at the club, is not what fans want or need right now. The club is being run from London, by Londoners, who have now started to treat the Newcastle fans, some of the best in the country mind you, with some disdain.

It’s hard to imagine how Mike Ashley can attend games at Newcastle , because he will be subject to ridicule from the fans, who do not like him one little bit, since his actions over Keegan. There is news this morning that he is increasing his bodyguards, and that’s probably a wise move (excuse the pun) by Mike.

And his statements on who was responsible for players are not consistent, because in his piece in the Newcastle Newcastle Fan magazine a couple of weeks ago, he had stated that those players were the ones Kevin wanted.

Apparently Newcastle plan to approach Tottenham this week seeking official permission to open talks with the Uruguayan, who only moved to the London club last season to become Juande Ramos’ assistant manager.

We should say we find nothing wrong with Gus himself, and he’ obviously very passionate about football and seems great with the Tottenham players, but he has no links at all with Newcastle, and we’d be surprised if he even wanted the job.

However, the wages and opportunity in the high profile job would be great for him, should he actually become successful.  But it would be a difficult situation for him to inherit, and of course it is none of his own making.

Newcastle fans are demanding the departure of owner Mike Ashley and Dennis Wise, his Director of Football, as they’ve had enough of them.

Since Keegan’s departure last Thursday evening, Wise has been working to draw up a short list of top-line coaches. Another name that has been mentioned in the mix is Terry Venables, currently out of work after making the fateful decision to become Steve McClaren’s assistant with England.

But Alan Shearer is not dumb enough to consider coming into a club that doesn’t allow its manager to choose the players he wants so articles such as in SoccerLens today saying that Shearer is the fans’ number one choice, may be wide of the mark this time around.

Shearer doesn’t want the job when his good friend Kevin Keegan has just had to resign because Ashley and his cronies were doing deals behind Kevin’s back, and Alan is very much like Kevin. He will not put up with any nonsense like that.

Poyet seems first choice, but Newcastle fans just don’t care, because they are still mourning the loss of the great Kevin Keegan, probably for the last time.

Comments welcome.

    Is this a joke?

Bring in KETSBAIA as next manager, for those who dont know, he is doing pretty well as manager of Famagusta in Cyprus and would, IMO offer a better option than Poyet, Wise, Joe Bloggs etc…

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Temuri_Ketsbaia

  • 3 jettson // Sep 7, 2008 at 15:27

poyet has done a decent job, and is media friendly, however the big issue is his association with Wise, its clear that it was poyet who worked wonders at Leeds, and to be fair, he is doing ok at spurs, he may be open to offers, but no-one will ever replace KK for passion or love for the club, Shearer included. We must get behind the team on sat, as we need 3 points and to win games, the fans are club, let them be heard loud and proud on sat!!

  • 4 Michael // Sep 7, 2008 at 15:37

Only a tiny minority of Newcastle fans are bothered who the next manager is, and they wont be until a new owner is in place. Then and only then will we look ahead.

  • 5 Midjew // Sep 7, 2008 at 15:40

    Well to be honest.

If there is not gonna be a take over, we just need to get someone in soon.

This Poyet bloke seems ok, but he doesnt really have a proven record as being a Manager at high level, but that dont mean he cant do the Job.

And him being from South America will only help with our spanish contingent.

Maybe we could have a good looking style, south american team, that would be good.

But right now. WHO CARES. we’re a bit of a Joke.

I doubt if any of the current managment’s choices will be poupular with us. Even it was a big name like Mourhino. The best obvous option for all concerned would be to leave Hughton in charge till the dust has settled. If it ever does.

  • 7 SouthernMag // Sep 7, 2008 at 15:44

Poyet would fit into the current structure of the club, and would make sense if Ashley, and especially Wise stays . However, it is obvious everyone wants Ashley out, and I think the continental structure can work, under the correct guidance, and that can still include Wise. It remains to be seen if Ashley can provide this, but it looks like Ashley is here to stay if they are already making their move for new managers.Wouldn’t Ashley take his time, waiting for a bid for the club from someone else? It would be a more attractive proposition for a potential buyer if they could appoint their own manager?
I’m not with this Londoners thing. I’d rather have a Londoner than an Indian or American. I don’t care where they’re from in Britain as long as they have the club’s best interests.

  • 8 ed_speed // Sep 7, 2008 at 15:45

where’s “fans should own the club” when you need him(it?)…….

  • 9 clinta // Sep 7, 2008 at 15:46

If you look at the squad of players we have and the players that the new (now of course hated) regime have brought in, and the deals done for them, we are in a much better situation than years past, so someone is due credit for this.

Also if you factor in that KK, before taking over at SJP hadn’t watched a game of football for 3 years, you could strongly argue that he probably isn’t the best guy to be wheeling and dealing on the transfer market!

maybe it’s better some one else took over the rains, as i think players in have been good over all, if not enough.

will be slated for this, but hey?

    Poyet sucks.

Will not be accepted by the Geordie faithful and not because he is no good but because Ashley is not welcome here any more.

Ashley out before we can go forward…..

  • 14 markthemag // Sep 7, 2008 at 15:54

surely there is better than poyet around as many people have said we dont want ne more of wise or ashley or ne connected with them he wudnt even be on list if it wasnt for the fact he worked with wise we need someone with managerial xperience and someone who understands the passion the newcastle fans have cos the idiots in charge dont

  • 15 richie // Sep 7, 2008 at 15:54

iwant to look ahead now to a takeover and a new manager, im sick to death of the ashley keegan saga,

firstly, leave hughton in charde for time being and lets start by hammering hull to shut up a few people.

next then is a takeover, lets cross are fingers that we get ashley out and a new rich owner with big aspirations,

finally the new manager, its a tough call but as it stands id try take sven gorn erikson from the mexico job

  • 16 ObaFan2 // Sep 7, 2008 at 15:54

Ashley and his cronies must leav our club and Poyets name will just be added to the list of cronies imo.

  • 17 Rupert AlBert // Sep 7, 2008 at 15:57

The actual quote from Keegan was “I mean I haven’t watched a game of football, I mean live, since my last game at Manchester City…” Thatis not to say he has no idea about spotting a good/bad player.

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/7044692.stm

Wise doesn’t even get up to Newcastle so god knows how he’s going to spot the next Beardsley or Shearer on the youth pitches of the Tyne. For Denise it’s just youtube and jollies around the world to pick up players we might well already have at home.

  • 18 geordiejayne // Sep 7, 2008 at 16:00

Is everyone who is talking about a new manager MAD, I mean stark raving bonkers.

Do we just let ASHLEY and his cronies get away with this.

For long enough we wanted rid of Freddy, and now we are going to put up with this.

Yes we support the team, but for those who want to move forward we have to be heard or we will never be the TOON again that I have supported all of my life.

PLEASE PLEASE do not be stupid let the Fans be heard.

How the hell can we bring young players through when the fans know eventually they are going to be sold.

We will never be anything under ASHLEY.

WHY ON EARTH SHOULD KEEGAN BE ALLOWED TO BE TREATED THIS WAY.

NO I SAY NO, I and my family will not allow this…….

  • 19 clinta // Sep 7, 2008 at 16:04

That’s not to say i’m happy with the current situation, but it is a point that should be considered in all this madness,

i feel some people, with emotions running sky high, have actually lost sight of some realities.

  • 21 Black and White Blood // Sep 7, 2008 at 16:07

    sirjasontoon - :-) Brilliant, you’ve made my day mate…Hooooray!!

Is it only me, or do any other fans not want another manager, only Keegan will do..!

I would have no respect for a manager to take up the reins under such circumstances or board, they would have no self-respecte, nothing more than a puppet.

  • 22 Jacob // Sep 7, 2008 at 16:08

Remember when our beloved club was linked with big hitters in the world of management? Van Gaal - Hitzfeld - Hiddink - Scolari and the like? Who’s touted for the job now? Some unknown Spanish gadgey, Gus Poyet and Terry Vegetables -just to name a few! How far have we fallen? I’m fed-up with our club being a laughing stock and I really hope our fans do boycott the home games to show the pie man that we’re not to be messed with! The players will understand, and must too feel embarrassed to be plying their trade for such a shambolic organisation. A mass scale boycott will be perfect fodder for the media, finally showing that the fans are capable of ‘real action’. (unlike those sky sports hired chavs the media love to mock because they portray us all as being thick as two short planks)This action will send a bone-chilling message to Ashley that he has no option other than to sell up. If he doesn’t, and the circumferencely challenged tight wad hangs on, installing his own puppet manager, then I truly believe that relegation this season is a certainty!

  • 23 Black and White Blood // Sep 7, 2008 at 16:08

    geordiejayne - You’re a star, well done!

  • 24 ObaFan2 // Sep 7, 2008 at 16:09

Black and White Blood, its not that we don’t want a new manager its ( as u know m8 :) ) WE WANT A NEW OWNER first.

  • 25 clinta // Sep 7, 2008 at 16:11

‘next then is a takeover, lets cross our fingers that we get ashley out and a new rich owner with big aspirations in’

this is exactly what ashley was suppose to be remember! most were happy when he came in, and do you really think another rich owner will make a difference? people with money, invest there money, to make a profit- the odd crazy russian excluded of course.

If we all protest and don’t support th team until ashley is out, that might be some time and that might be in a lower league.

one problem with KK it seems like he was bigger than the club, the way people go on! that’s not right the team should be first, not a resigning manager.

  • 26 bill // Sep 7, 2008 at 16:11

Agree with 17 geordiejayne - I refuse to discuss a new manager.

The only issue to debate here, is, if Ashley doesn’t go now, how do we make sure he goes soon.

  • 27 ObaFan2 // Sep 7, 2008 at 16:12

A new owner MUST come in and appoint their own manager or whoever is in the position when Ashley sells will be in the same situation BSA was in when Ashley took over.

  • 28 ObaFan2 // Sep 7, 2008 at 16:15

Ed, could you please put a poll up:

    Should Ashley sell?

    would be greatly appretiated.

  • 29 Black and White Blood // Sep 7, 2008 at 16:16

ObaFan2 - Yeah, I agree, although it concerns me to hear people contemplating as well as discussing names - There’s only one name KEEGAN.

Will all witnessed the difference he made since his return; it’s even more remarkable now these facts have come to light! I think Sir Jay Toon…. said it a few days back, the improvement was noticeable, and you could see the early stages of the entertainers making their return!

  • 32 beyethegreat // Sep 7, 2008 at 16:18

obafan what would be the point in that poll we all know the answer to that and probably 99.9% of the fans think and hope he sells up

though there should be a poll on how to stage a protest

  • 34 Graham // Sep 7, 2008 at 16:19

    GeordieJayne - well said!

B&W Blood - I think the reason we want KK back is because he has only just started turning things around and then been stabbed in the back.

I would love to see what he could really do this time around without being over ruled. Im not saying that he needs £100’s of Million to do it. But we need to see what it would be like - could he do it again? Maybe one step further and actually win something. That is what’s eating up inside of me.

  • 38 Edd Case // Sep 7, 2008 at 16:25

As much as I want Ashley out, I dont think he’ll sell, so we’ll just have to lump it.

As such, Poyet would be my first choice.
As mentioned, he and Wise get on fine and in the long run, both men will want success and will work together well - harmony at St James’???

Well, time will tell but Poyet gets my vote - though he’ll never be King Kev and I still want Ashley out…
    and Wise, the little prick.

  • 39 ANIL AMBADI // Sep 7, 2008 at 16:25

Total Agreement with Geordie Jayne. Born and bred a geordie for what to be turned into a southerner. Balls to this. OUT WITH ASHELY . OUT WITH WISE. If i ever get me hands on either of them i’ll ring their sodding necks.

I want a new owner and keegan back in to finish the job he started ! F##k off to Ashley, Wise and Lambias contingent.

I will not accept any one they want in, especially when the list sems to only consist of Wises mates. Is that who runs our club? - Dennis the Big Mouth Little Shit Wise.

We need to keep our mouths loud and screaming anger until they just piss off out of TOON and never ever some back.

  • 42 KK FOREVER (Ross) // Sep 7, 2008 at 16:27

i really dont care who it is.
at the end of the day the 3 main names in the frame are vialli, zola or poyet. all links with wise through leeds/chelsea.
it’s just not good enough. he’s clearly looking to bring in one of his mates. what help is that going to do.

“look trust me its in your best interest to take the job. i mean, i’m on over a million a year and all i do is fly around the world! come on, we’d have a reet laugh”

there’s only one man for the job and its keegan. sirjasontoon-if they’re claiming keegan is favourite for the job, go take a look at their odds for ambani taking over, because thats the only chance KK has of getting his job back. Obviously if ashley is still here, his return is just impossible. cant see it sadly.

  • 53 Graham // Sep 7, 2008 at 16:33

The longer this goes opn the more it will affect Ashleys pocket.

It will not just be Newcastle fans who boycott his stores. This will ring a bell in the minds of all decent football supporters around the country.

I’ve noticed a change in the tone of even the national press in the past few days. We’re still the laughing stock of the premier league but reporters are putting more of an emphasis on Ashley and not NUFC - we’ve even got a bit of sympathy from a few!

As arrogant as Ashley is he will not risk his other businesses just to keep hold of NUFC. His grubby stores are his income - NUFC is his toy.

If someone comes in with a decent offer Ashley will be off.

We need to keep the pressure up on him and dont let this get out of the news. I was speaking with a mackem ‘friend’ this morning and even he said he couldn’t believe the tone of the statement Ashley put out.

I just hopr that a certain someone comes in with a good offer…..

Ashley has said that he is looking for partners for newcastle united. So that he could make profit if a foreign invester invests some money and newcastle become a high profile club. So now he wont sell the club completely. So the only way we can make him leave is by boycotting every game until he sells. it is 100% sure that he is getting the offers. But he is waiting for more profit. SO THE ONLY WAY IS TO BOYCOTT EVERY GAME UNTIL HE SELLS

off subject for a minute but if one of our players said this about an opponent, would we not be charged with bringing the game into disrepute???

The Gunners’ skipper, with unashamed bias against Barton, felt differently. “The moment Barton came on to the pitch [against Arsenal] he made a bad challenge on Samir Nasri,” he said, continuing, “Samir responded with an act that maybe wasn’t especially nice. But bearing in mind the player he did it to, then fair enough.”

Here’s a controversial one: what has Kevin Keegan actually done to be considered with such high esteem?

  • 68 Graham // Sep 7, 2008 at 16:41

B&W Blood - I agree. Keegan has unfinished business with NUFC. I am just desparate to know how he could do given full support.

Could be clutching at straws but I can’t see Ashley hanging onto NUFC. Not with the ill feeling (hatred) towards him and his main businesses

  • 71 geordiejayne // Sep 7, 2008 at 16:42

Big Dave I have thought about it and nothing else.

Keegan’s record in buying and selling players in the past at NUFC was very good indeed.

You are falling into the trap of believing the rags.

The point to all of this , IS not if the dwarf has signed good players or not….

The point is Wise and Ashley are liars and lied to you and I and the rest of the Toon faithful.

    THATS THE BLOODY POINT

  • 72 Black and White Blood // Sep 7, 2008 at 16:43

beyethegreat - Yes, by all reports, Keegan is sounding upbeat and has refused to rule out a return, hence my desire to not discuss possible new managers.

If I was to hazard a guess, I think most, even pro-Ashley supports would admit that Ashley’s position is untenable. As a result, I believe, discussions to buy the club out right have begun, although I wouldn’t like to suggest who the buyer will.

Brings a tear to the eye everytime. I was standing just below Keegans wife and kids

  • 77 Mick_Bell // Sep 7, 2008 at 16:46

Oh, and big dave, I said something along those lines on a different post, there is unfortuatly no getting round the fact that the players we have actually brought in by the recruitment team are of a high quality! Keegan said it himself! Im looking forward to seeing these two new lads play and if they are like the quality already brought in, as well as if we can bring in a few more of this quality, I think it may leave a few people wondering if this structure we have in place is actually a good one!

Can’t stand the fans that are contemplating keeping the club the way it is especially the ones not even from the North East. One thing is certain for me is…ASHLEY SELL UP!!! Why the f*ck should we sell to another British owner like some of you are saying? It didn’t work with Ashley or Fat Fred. I wouldn’t mind personally a foreign owner as there is not many British Billionares and most of them are scared of spending their money. While all these foreign owners are dishing the money out I personally think it could turn out alright.

i think the important thing is we must keep the ball rolling this week and not listen to any spin that comes out from the club to try to quell the protests marches etc
fact, they have lied to us and treated us with contempt
fact, they have made us the biggest laughing stock in the entire country
fact, while we suffered, they kept silent only to be broken by an arogant petty, teenage rant, showing furher contempt for us
opinion, their position is now untenable at the club and we have finally had enough, which will be revealled in huge numbers on saturday

    http://www.nationmaster.com/encyclopedia/Fatih-Terim

  • 93 Jimi // Sep 7, 2008 at 16:57

To keep it short and sweet…

    1. Keegan is the only manager for me. I need to see him back to have a real go on his terms.
    2. Hard lined action is the only way forward. Boycotting merchandise, backs to the pitch during a game etc.
    3. I backed Ashley before but those who are still backing him and telling people they are emotional really need to look at the outrageous contradicting facts and quotes that have come to light recently from this totally inept and ignorant regime.
    4. The majority of those who are still backing him on this site mostly always seem to come from anywhere but Newcastle.
    5. To oppose and not mock the idea of some who say “just get on with it for the club and players sake” I would say history has shown that sometimes the ‘mob’ is right and that sometimes is now. If the stories are to be believed, even the players are outraged and there are ways we can still show our support to them whilst showing none to the current regime, for instance not entering the ground but singing support for the players outside during a game etc.
    6. Please be aware that Ashley will now try everything in his power to use the media to darken Keegans name whether it be subtle or ridiculous.
    7. We need to be strong and hurt something we adore which is NUFC for the short term to win it back for the long term and regain our pride and dignity.
    8. Those who argue that it is Ashley’s club and business are again looking through weak, tunnel visioned eyes. There would be no business without us, therefore there would be no club, therefore this is our club, this is Newcastle’s club, this is the people’s club and one man will not be given the power to destroy it.
    9. I at first laughed at this idea but after investigating further and having some facts laid before me, although still maybe impossible, it doesn’t now seem so proposterous. http://www.savenewcastle.com/index.html
    10. Ashley get the hell out of our football club before the Toon Army bring the whole of your empire crashing down before your eyes and imcompetent crooked cronies, as we will make even the selling of a few t-shirts hard work for you.
Toon forever, Toon for the people…

  • 94 euanpolo // Sep 7, 2008 at 16:59

Setanta Sports News has reported that Fatih Terim is interested in the vacant managerial position at St James’ Park, after speaking to his representative.

“It goes without saying that any manager, including Terim, would be interested in a position like this,” Terim’s representative Mel Goldberg told Setanta Sports News.

“Newcastle is a massive club with passionate fans and we hope they bring in the right man for the job.”

Ashley’s gone Turkish! Have to say though that I was impressed by Turkey in Euro 08. Still hope KK is brought back by a new owner.

it is a fact that kk appointed on 16th jan 08 agreed to report to a director of football

which says that he agreed to work with a director of football but …. kk was told he would have the final say and the club gave quotes to support that

After his declaration, the team’s performance declined significantly, and his continuing clashes with the club president urged him to resign before the season ended.

I’d like to keep an open mind about buying the club out from under Ashley, but when you’ve ran the numbers a few times it’s almost infeasible. Although our hearts would be in the right place, just think how much we’d be worrying about. Wages, transfers, floatation and a lot, lot more. I don’t need to tell you all that it isn’t as easy as Football Manager 08 or Fifa 08 would have us believe.

As much as I’d love to see a fan owned NUFC, we’d probably run the club headlong into more and more financial difficulties.

  • 128 steve // Sep 7, 2008 at 17:37

Think Ashley and co have seriously underestimated the fans in all of this - one minute they’re telling us money is there for players and we’ve made bids for modric, turan etc and can expect a WOW signing the next they are saying we only have 12 million to spend over the summer, can’t believe it was only a week ago we were saying on this blog how we were in for berbatov and every other big name.

They’ve been leading us and KK up a merry path which is what i find most disappointing

Poyet’s already declined according to “sources close to him” as he thinks the job will kill his career under the current circumstances.

Much as I hate Wise and co they look to have brought some decent players in and I reckon Llambias and Ashley are the real villains in this -

A total boycott of the Hull game is the only thing that will keep the pressure on, the players will be well aware that this is not about them or the club but against the current owner and Llambias and co - the only downside is that with all the controversy the club is probably worth less than Ashley paid for it and it’s therefore unlikely that anyone will give him his money back for it.
I def can’t see Ashley selling at a loss no matter how long we slag him off

Can all these people suggesting a boycott of the Hull ( or any other )game PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE stop, every single one of the 52k seats needs to be filled with loyal, passionate vocal FANS on saturday, supporting the players BUT NOT the regime , there have been some great idea’s put forward on this and other sites , there is absolutely no doubt that ashley & cohorts are in the smelly stuff up to there necks , t-shirts, marches , banners etc , but we all have to be there on saturday , and let the players understand we are still totally 100% behind them and the colours ( except when ashley wears them of course) ..I dont even know if I’m bothered who our next manger is , …as long as its not under ashley wise & co….we areknown as proud, passionate supporters …..there has never been a time in recent history when our TEAM have needed us more …lets make sure we are there and let them hear us…leazes corner ..your moment has come!!!!

  • 167 dick // Sep 7, 2008 at 18:07

Never read such a load of self- pity in all my life, KK is gone, he would have gone anyway in a few months, he can only build a team one way by buying proven players, and if they were no good buying more players. Everybody on here convinently forgets that the last time he was here he scrapped the reserves, losing in the proccess loads of good young players who went on to be huge successes at other clubs. This put the club back years, first thing Sir Bobby Robson did was build another reserve team but it took years to get it back to where it was. SIR BOBBY ROBSON THE TRUE MESSIAH

  • 174 mozza // Sep 7, 2008 at 18:11

my dad used to know a mackem who was more interested in us getting beat than them winning, such was his inferiority complex regarding us, my point is i would find it so sad if my time had to be spent hovering round a rival blog like a s**te hawk, seemingly more interested in a teams demise at the other end of the country, when if truth be told everything is not so rosy in my own garden at the moment, i think if the person had any insight at all they would realise what a pathetic thing it is that they do, gather up some dignity and concentrate on their own team and god forbid have the sense to talk to their own fans on their own blogs of which i’m sure there will be plenty, sigh i wont hold my breath though
