There is good news for Newcastle United fans tonight, that Mike Ashley may have finally seen the light of day, and is reported to be in secret talks with Kevin Keegan in London, to potentially bring the maestro back to Newcastle.
Kevin Keegan – could be returning to Newcastle United
A host of bookmakers have tonight slashed their odds on Kevin Keegan returning to his manager position at Newcastle, after reports surfaced he was already in talks with owner Mike Ashley in London on Friday night.
Considering the nature of Keegan’s departure from Tyneside last week, the news, if true, would be a dramatic twist indeed, in the latest Newcastle soap opera, but it is exactly what Newcastle fans want to hear.
Generally when push has come to shove, Mike has gone with the Newcastle fans, and after returning from New York earlier in the week we think he has understood just how dismayed and disillusioned Newcastle fans are with him and the state of the club.
It’s just eight months since Kevin’s return to St James’ Park, and Keegan was already having the team play some beautiful football, and two of our games this season, against Man United and Coventry have been absolute classics, though not particularly good for the blood pressure.
Kevin of course walked away on principle after claiming he had been undermined by the club’s hierarchy in the transfer market, and as we know Kevin can be very principled on things like this.
There is no confirmation of why the meeting in London is taking place, but it seems likely that Mike will try to patch things up with Kevin, so that he could even take charge of the team for tomorrow’s game.
Yes, we know that may be jumping the gun big time, and that may be too quick, even for Newcastle, but we wouldn’t bet against it either. That’s because Ashley will be at the game, and we don’t think he wants to be pelted with tomatoes.
Protests against Keegan’s departure are already planned for tomorrow’s game against Hull City, and these could be avoided if Ashley manages to calm the waters and reinstate Kevin either tonight or tomorrow morning, on terms Kevin can manage the club under.
Obviously there is speculation here, but we had expected Mike to do this as soon as last Friday, the day after Kevin resigned, since we think Kevin’s resignation came right of the blue.
But perhaps Ashley had to see the devastation of Newcastle fans and the club for himself, to really understand just how much the City of Newcastle and the fans are completely devastated by Kevin leaving.
There could be very good news about this tomorrow – and we’ll just have to wait and see – and keep hoping.
If there is news it will be on the official site at www.nufc.co.uk .
We’d also like to see Chris Mort reinstated as Chairman, because it seems like Derek Llambias is too much of a liability, and Chris did some good things while he was here.
But like any good man, he also has his own career as a lawyer to keep going, and his family lives in London, and are not willing to move north. So that may be difficult, unless of course Mike gives him an offer he couldn’t refuse – and that’s always possible.
But if the Board and Kevin can really bury the hatchet – the big winners will be the club itself of course, and their very faithful fans – and we couldn’t care less what other folks think about it.
