Bassong Looks Set To Start Tomorrow For Newcastle

September 12th, 2008 · 217 Comments

Sebastien Bassong has looked a good young player, since he was signed in the summer from French club Metz, and he hopes to play as many games a possible for Newcastle this season.

Sebastien Bassong - likely to start at left back tomorrow

Bassong played alongside Fabricio Coloccini against Coventry in central defense, and looked very accomplished on that night, for a 22 year-old.

And when he came on at left back for the injured Jose Enrique, two weeks ago at The Emirates Stadium, he also put in a solid performance in a game when we looked completely out of our depth, in all honesty.

That was our last game, and we were well beaten 3-0, so we can help things a lot with a good home win against Hull City tomorrow afternoon, and that has to be out goal tomorrow.

Bassong is still on the fringes of the France Under-21 team, and was not on international duty with Charles N’Zogbia over the last two weeks, so he’s had a good rest in Newcastle.

He told the Shields Gazette about playing at left back:

“I am not used to playing there, but I am happy to play there.”

“We have some injuries, but the players who are fit are trying really hard.” “We have two weeks to rest, and we will work hard for the next game against Hull.”

“All the games are very important. We need to win, and I hope to play at St James’ Park.”

We expect Sebastien to be at left back tomorrow, and we also expect new boy Xisco to start up front in place of Shola Ameobi, who was again just hopeless against Arsenal.

We also expect our other new boy, Uruguayan central midfielder Ignacio Gonzalez, at Newcastle for a season loan, to make his debut, although we expect Chris Hughton to start Butt and Guthrie in central midfield.

Comments welcome.

The recent international break has allowed Ameobi to rest a hamstring injury he originally picked up in pre-season, with the towering front-man now insisting he feels fully fit.

“To play my first game of the season at Arsenal was good for me,” he said.

“The result wasn’t what we wanted, but it was always going to be tough. They are a top, top side and they showed that.

“For me personally, it was good to get 90 minutes under my belt. It was a boost to be thrown in there and be told to go out and do a job.

“The hamstring feels 100 per cent fine now. I was champing at the bit to play at Arsenal.

“It’s been an up and down couple of seasons for me, but hopefully this is the end of my injury worries and I can push on from here.”

Understatement of the century - “up and down couple of seasons..” F@cking shithouse more like!

“Whatever the events of the past couple of weeks off the field, all the players here are proper professionals, we are all paid to do a job, and we have to go out and continue to do that job,” he said.

“The only thing the players can do is play to their best and get good results for the club, and we have to focus on doing that.”

Looks like the players are being PROFESSIONALS then

  • 16 ToonKing // Sep 12, 2008 at 14:11

off topic question for you british guys

why is 100K short for 100 000 ??? where does the the K come from..??

  • 17 Ohmelads // Sep 12, 2008 at 14:14

    k = kilo…..thousand (grammes)

  • 18 WesToon // Sep 12, 2008 at 14:14

    @ Spyro // Sep 12, 2008 at 14:03

Good Team mate…just one thing though… who is gona tackle in midfield?? Guthrie aint an out & out DM like Nicky…only prob for me really

    What do you think??

  • 19 ObaFan2 // Sep 12, 2008 at 14:15

ToonKing, I think It stands for Kilo, the latin word for 1000.

  • 20 irish_al // Sep 12, 2008 at 14:15

good question toon king, although rather off topic, i assume it relates to kilo as in gram or metre, equaling a thousand

but any further than that i am unsure

  • 21 bowburnmag // Sep 12, 2008 at 14:15

What’s the craic with the injury crew? Have we had any updates? I’m just being lazy and haven’t looked far for news.

  • 22 ToonKing // Sep 12, 2008 at 14:17

ok, thanks lads, i figured the same … :D

  • 23 GoesseN // Sep 12, 2008 at 14:18

1 kilogram is 1000 grams… so in short 100,000 is just shortend into the weight terms of 100k as 1k is 1000… etc simple really

  • 24 Ohmelads // Sep 12, 2008 at 14:18

Here’s a pub brain teaser for you - who are the nine players to have played 100 or more games in the European cup?

  • 25 WesToon // Sep 12, 2008 at 14:18

    @ Paul R // Sep 12, 2008 at 14:06

Thats more like the team i would put out, nice one mate!!

  • 26 Cicero // Sep 12, 2008 at 14:23

I think this would be a good game to blood young Ben Tozer, the kid is class. I’d also play Bassong in the centre instead of Taylor who isn’t as good as he thinks he is.

  • 27 Spyro // Sep 12, 2008 at 14:23

I was under the impression Nacho is a similar player to Guthrie in the sense that he attacks and defends well. TBH i am not sure though.

  • 28 irish_al // Sep 12, 2008 at 14:29

100 games in the european cup?

    Maldini, Raul, Hierro, Seedorf

    Any of those right?

  • 29 bettyswollocks // Sep 12, 2008 at 14:30

    cicero - eh?

why do people come on here and make such stupid bloody comments.

so you’d drop a player with over 3 seasons of premier league footy under his belt - and who has played well so far this season - for a kid who hasn’t a single minutes footy under his belt.

Not only that but you would shove said kid into a defence containing another young lad who has not even played one full premier league game.

  • 30 Ohmelads // Sep 12, 2008 at 14:30

Maldini, raul, seedorf - 6 others

  • 31 bowburnmag // Sep 12, 2008 at 14:32

I’m still astounded there has been nothing from the club about the game tomorrow or how we take this forward. No press conference from a representative?

  • 32 ToonKing // Sep 12, 2008 at 14:32

actually is find the answer and it doesn’t come from Kilo.

It comes from the Greek ?????? (”khilioi”), meaning thousand.

guess we learn something every day… :)

  • 38 bettyswollocks // Sep 12, 2008 at 14:38

tozer will make the same mistakes in first 3 seasons. It’s what young defenders tend to do. The unfortunate thing for taylor is he had his first 3 seasons next to the likes of boumsong and bramble. hardly an ideal education is it?

  • 42 Cicero // Sep 12, 2008 at 14:49

mozza - if it wasn’t so contemptuous it would be hilarious. I’d be laughing my nuts off that they are so out of tune with the game and the supporters. However, given what’s gone before, I’m more annoyed than amused.

  • 45 bettyswollocks // Sep 12, 2008 at 14:53

er - i think you’ll find he played about 2 games at swindon. hardly first team regular. Just out of curiousity how many times have you seen him play to justify thrwoing him into the pit alongside a center back who has not completed a full premier league game yet (bassong)?

do you really rate taylor that low?

i’m not saying taylor is the best player in the world but i think he gets a hard time for no reason. he’s made mistakes but it must be petrifying learning your trade alongside the like of boumsong and bramble. he’s looked decent enough alongside colo.

  • 46 Tom_Toon // Sep 12, 2008 at 14:55

I think Kadar is by far our best defender in the ressies.

  • 47 Tom_Toon // Sep 12, 2008 at 14:56

Taylor will never be a great defender because he cant read the game at all.

Bassong looks like he can, he is natural.

whole team was poor that day.

i’m all for the likes of kadar, tozer, lua lua atc getting their chance if they are good enough. it just should be done from the bench first.

  • 52 Cicero // Sep 12, 2008 at 15:02

Think you’ll find he played 7 games and a couple of cup games. I think Taylor gets away with a lot because he’s a local lad. And I agree with you Tom_Toon I think Bassong and Kadar could be our future pairing.

That’s what David Craig from SSN is saying, and they have issued that statement.

    BREAKING NEWS!

AMBANI HAS WITHDRAWN ALL INTEREST FROM NUFC!!!

Why? Because off all the turbulence and uncertainty that has been brought about by hysterical fans boycotting the club. It is no longer considered a sound financial option. Congratulations everyone who wanted Ashley out.

  • 62 MarK // Sep 12, 2008 at 15:09

you watch the reserve team play tom toon? I want to see him play (kadar) hes been part of the hungarian team already so I reckon he should be a bench starter this season.

Taylor is fine…hes not incredibly shit..as some people like to make him out to be..I think hes been good so far …I dunno maybe playing well gets to his head then boom! meltdown..then the cycle starts all over again lol.

team to start: same as spyro. if beyes not fit replace him with edgar…or geremi then butt (arse) in midfield

  • 63 Tom_Toon // Sep 12, 2008 at 15:10

  • 73 Toon Chicken // Sep 12, 2008 at 15:24

maybe hitman - but you gotta admit all this hysteria isn’t making NUFC look like an attractive target for potential investors. I mean, if you were mega-rich and had no ties to the Toon, I’m sure you’d agree that with all that has gone on in the last fortnight it looks like more hassle than its worth.

  • 74 MarK // Sep 12, 2008 at 15:25

if ambani was interested in the toon it would be in his interests for as much uproar as possible. The club then gets devalued and he can get a good deal and come in as the white knight.

wouldnt be suprised if they just leaked a story saying ashley is fobbing them off just to wind us up a bit more

Toon Chicken - one thing this hysteria will prove to any suitable buyers would be that a) there is unbelievable passion here b) NUFC fans want people to do the right thing by them (communicate with them and respect them) even if we don’t agree with certain actions if they come out and tell us what’s going on they can earn our respect. c) we don’t like being messed around. Hopefully, that will go some way to weeding out any more potential p*ss-takers and that includes prospective players. But probably not.

I have to pitch in with those people who say that “hysterical” fans have made NUFC look a bad option for Anil Ambani or anybody else to buy.
So many of you people have rushed headlong into this mass hysteria without giving the true situation any thought at all and all you have done is make your clubs decent fans appear to be fickle idiotic unintelligent half wits.
Considering the way most of you have acted over this affair, DO YOU REALLY EXPECT ANOTHER BILLIONAIRE TO COME IN AND PUT MILLIONS OF POUNDS INTO THE CLUB WHEN THE MAJORITY OF THE FANBASE APPEAR TO BE RIDICULOUSLY STUPID AND NARROW MINDED FOOLS WHO ARE LIABLE TO WANT THE NEW OWNER OUT OF THE CLUB JUST AS QUICKLY AS YOU HAVE TURNED ON MR ASHLEY!!

Yes. Primarily because billionaires are businessmen, and as long as an investment shows a potential profit there will be buyers.
    Simple really.

    @Mozza and Hitman
re that last line of the statement..

those “turbulent conditions” are there for all to see (including the indians) so if they were such a deal-breaker why would the Indians be also complaining about not being able to have “satisfying talks with anyone from the club”.

Methinks these comments smack more of managing the process to their advantage rather than a terminating statement.

A spokesman for his Reliance Group said this afternoon: “We are no longer interested in buying Newcastle because of the turbulent conditions which currently exist there and because we have been unable to have any satisfying talks with anyone from the club.”

  • 122 Tom // Sep 12, 2008 at 15:59

Bassong could be a brilliant player for us, seems to read the game really well, whilst being quick, strong and good in the air. If he gets a few games at left back and find his feet, hopefully he can move inside and replace Taylor at starting CB when Enrique is back fit again.

Also I agree with what people say about Kadar potentially becoming a first team player. I’d like to see him get some time in the first team at some point (no doubt he will eventually the way the injuries are going) along with the likes of lua-lua, Donaldson, Godsmark etc :)

  • 123 bear pit // Sep 12, 2008 at 15:59

Play Bassong at CB alongside Colo and play Taylor LB, he’ll be less of a liability there and he likes getting forward

  • 124 Toon Chicken // Sep 12, 2008 at 16:00

hitman - it doesn’t say they tried and failed to talk to Ashley though, does it?

    It says we haven’t had satisfactory talks with anyone from the club. That could still mean they have had unsatisfactory talks though ie;

Ambani “can we buy your club Mr Ashley”

    Ashley “Er, no.”

TOONPIPES - sorry mate, busy finishing off before heading home to bath the dog, walk the bairn and throw sticks for the missus. Or something like that. To be honest, I share mushy’s view and think they’ll believe they can be more astute in their approach to get us on side. In short, they will channel that sort of passion. Whether they’d remain honest and true when in power is another matter. But can they be worse than this lot? Bridges burnt, get someone else in, start all over again. I’m not convinced it’ll happen though.

  • 132 JJ // Sep 12, 2008 at 16:05

    Tom Toon

You have to be the biggest idiot on this blog…

The way you state bull**** as if its fact.

Bassong is far better than Taylor? The fact you can make a statement like that openly admitting not so long ago that you had never heard of Bassong show what a load of bollocks you talk.

And I wouldnt be suprised if you havnt ever played the game.

Taylor is by far the better player at present. And has looked superb in all of our matches to date.

He is by far the strongest defender we have in the air and in a tackle, and his determination and passion to fight for the side is an inspiration.

He is still learning but I still feel he is currently our best defender with Colocini still settling.

Please stop talking such turd and mentioning players from your PLAYSTATION games because you really do need to learn the game mate…

Secondly if he leaves and takes wise with him, we have no owner, no money, would be in debt to Ashley for the money he’s invested, and i’d just love to know where our new manager is going to be found without anyone looking, and who’s going to sign his pay cheque..

  • 146 ronaldeano // Sep 12, 2008 at 16:12

If Ambani cant get satisfying talks with Ashley, and he no longer wants to buy NUFC then fair enough.

Turbulent conditions at the club were brought on by MA and his cronies, NOT the fans that are venting their anger at those responsible for the shambolic way in wich our great club is being run.

To say that Ambani has pulled out because of the fans that are understandibly furious with Ashley is stupid to say the least.

It is well documented that there is turbulent times at the club

If Ambani has pulled out, the only reason for that is he cant have serious takeover talks with MA for one reason or another. If he dosent want it, fair play, but we still need to get MA out asap

Put it another way, why would they announce total termination of interest in such early stages of current turmoil.
NO, we have not heard the last of Mr Ambani.

  • 153 bowburnmag // Sep 12, 2008 at 16:15

TOONPIPES - not particularly. If they stop taking the p*ss and tell us what is going on and convince me there really is a masterplan that will pay dividends. I hate what they did to Keegan and it will forever leave a bitter taste in my mouth when I reminisce but if we can move on, so be it. Nothing yet assures me we can under the current regime. Partly because of the ill-feeling. But also, too many mistakes, not enough craic and a whole of broken trust. Doesn’t convince me that they know what they’re doing as a group.

  • 154 Toon Chicken // Sep 12, 2008 at 16:17

  • 156 JJ // Sep 12, 2008 at 16:20

Tom Toon, Coloccini is better than Taylor and should be.
But to say Bassong is… well I dont need to argue with someone as clueless as you are….
And yes Taylor played brilliantly against United (better than Coloccini - in fact they only scored when he left the field), he played very well against Bolton.
Against Arsenal only Jonas and Shay did anything to be proud of really.

So yes Tom, he has been our best defender so far this season, and name any Newcastle player who is better in the air? I’d love to know…

  • 157 TOONPIPES // Sep 12, 2008 at 16:21

Bowburnmag .. Think that is what need to do - move on .. lets give them a chance .. you cudnt disagree that up until last 2 weeks thinkgs have ben going pretty well … and there is clearly arguments both for and against Keegan in the current fallout … i think we shud focus on getting behind the team and let things settle at boardlevel .. if things still poor in 1 year from now then lets try for a move .. but he is trying to sort things out .. i really blv that ..

  • 158 Paul // Sep 12, 2008 at 16:22

It’s hardly surprising that Ambani doesn’t want to buy Newcastle. After all, why would he want to buy a an unstable club where the supporters are calling for the head of the current owner? He will just think “that could be me in a few months, no thanks!”

  • 159 Karltoon // Sep 12, 2008 at 16:22

    Slightly off topic here..

I still think that he is purposefully getting us publicity constantly a) for selfish ‘thats him who owns sports direct’ brand awareness reasons and b) To keep NUFC in the tabloids by any means neccesary, so if we do play good football and have a respectable run this year we then have the fame of being talked about constantly, but nobody can discredit us because we’ve done well!.

I think this whole thing might make him make a serious chuffing WOW signing in january.. With a little bow tied around there neck saying ’sorry lads.. still mates?’

  • 160 Toon Chicken // Sep 12, 2008 at 16:23

JJ - Owen, Martins, Viduka, Coloccini, Bassong (based on Coventry and Pre-season).

The thing wih Taylor is, he may well be good at tackling, heading etc, but HE HAS NO SENSE OF POSITIONING OR READING THE GAME - A PARAMOUNT QUALITY FOR A DEFENDER - HE DOESNT HAVE THIS QUALITY! MAKING HIM VERY AVERAGE.

  • 178 JJ // Sep 12, 2008 at 16:39

Tom Toon, their is a major difference between defensive headering and heading for goal.
To climb above attackers and head powerful long clearances - nobody does this better than Taylor at Newcastle.
His potional sense is not bad, its not great but defenders only peak at about 26-30. He has 5 years to learn things like that.
If he were a young talent coming through the reserves. Then it wouldnt be an issue just yet but he was forced onto the side early because of the poor quality of our senior defenders.

He has the right attitude and has openly addmitted he must learn form Coloccini.
WHO COULD HE HAVE LEARNED FROM?
Boumsong must have had the worst positional sense of any defender ever… Bramble??, there has been nobody until now.
In a couple of years he will be a great player.
    And will only be 24.

  • 179 bowburnmag // Sep 12, 2008 at 16:39

Spyro, - the only balls Taylor “misjudges” are the ones most defenders in the side would not have won anyway.
Really, I dont want to argue nonsense with you and Tom because it is incredible that every manager at the club has picked him to start (about 5 managers) and he is England u-21 Captain and has been selected for the England squad as a centre back already at his age.

But again, like with the management structure, yourself and TomToon know better….

Thats exactly my point Tom, how can you compare Colo to Talyor in heading ability when he hasnt been tested against the big boys yet.
He came a bit unstuck against Adebeyor and he will find it tricky against Drobga, Crouch etc.
I like Colo a lot but lets not praise him just yet…
Like you say. Its a different league…

    Crouch?!?!?!!?

The man is the most useless header of the ball ever in proportion to his height.

My argument is clear - if we had a better defender to play in DC then play him - Faye would probably have been there, with Taylor fighting as competition. But Tom Toon said Bassong is better… how can he make that statement when he has never even played a premier league game in that position.
I said Taylor is better than Bassong. And unfortunately because of our great owner and Director - Faye is out and we have no replacement.
Casapa is good but not at all strong in the air. Which in the EPL is a big issue.

Crouch, regardless of what nobrainers like you think Tom, is actually an excellent player and his record proves it…
