Something that Newcastle fans have known for a long time, and indeed Premier League fans have known too, is that, at his best, Shay Given has few equals in goalkeeping.
Shay Given – great goalkeeper had fabulous game for Ireland Wednesday night
But over the last two seasons Shay has been troubled by a groin injury, and has been repeatedly injured and sidelined, which of course affected his form a little.
But he now seems over that injury, and has been in great form for both newcastle and Ireland this season, and it just shows the character of the man, as he now looks as good as ever.
Ireland’s Italian boss Giovanni Trapattoni believes Shay Given is as good as the world’s most expensive goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon, and the Italian has been impressed with Given.
The Newcastle goalkeeper had another fine performance in Wednesday night’s World Cup qualifier in Montenegro.
Given’s display was capped with a terrific save to deny Montenegro’s Stevan Jovetic during the match, leading to praise from his manager.
“I have seen many, many games in the past and I know Shay’s quality.” “Last night (in Montenegro), when the ball was deflected, I saw it going towards the post and I thought it was a goal.”“But Shay saved it and for me, he is one of the best in Europe, the same as Buffon.” “He has a very, very good personality and he commands the team, but quietly.”
“We have a saying in Italy that once you praise somebody too much, you have to touch wood, but his performance last night was very good.”
Trapattoni is right on, and we are very proud to have had Shay at the Tyneside club for the last 11 seasons.
Now we have to get in a world-class manager, and get the Newcastle club on track again, so we can win a few trophies for the Irishman, not to mention the patient Newcastle faithful, spread all over the world.
