Guthrie Tackle Breaks Craig Fagan’s Leg

September 15th, 2008 · 203 Comments

Danny Guthrie was given a red card in the closing stages of Hull’s 2-1 victory on Saturday, when he seemed to lose his temper and hacked down Craig Fagan, with the ball nowhere near.

Craig Fagan - broken tibia

The terrible news this morning is that it seems the tackle has broken Fagan’s leg, and Danny could be in serious trouble now with the FA.

Fagan left St. James’ Park on crutches on Saturday, but the full extent of the damage was not known at that time, and the Hull medical staff were hoping it was just very severe bruising.

However, an X-ray this morning confirmed the 25-year-old suffered a fractured right tibia in the lower leg, and is now expected to be out between six weeks and three months.

Hull manager Phil Brown was understandably critical in his assessment of Guthrie’s tackle.

“It cannot be tolerated, it needs to be kicked out of the game,” “When you see that the end product is him putting a fellow pro in a cast, it’s just not right.”“That’s the horrible side of the game. I don’t care what is going on at Newcastle, you cannot tolerate this.” “If I go back to the incident, my players were killing time in the corner, something that every Premier League club does, no matter who you are.”

“In the process of doing that, someone has decided to take the matter into his own hands and lashed out at Craig Fagan.”

Phil is right, and there’s no excuse for Danny’s actions at the end of the game, when his frustration seemed to boil over.

It’s part of Guthrie’s football education, and he seemed to just lose his temper, but the consequences may be severe for the lad, now that his tackle has injured Fagan so severely.

When will we get any good news about Newcastle?

Wishing and Hoping.

Comments welcome.

Bring on a new owner and the reinstatement of the messiah…

2 of those first 5 comments are just as disgusting as the kick was itself. :/

AndyNUFC Faygen is a c**t but he didn’t deserve that, and now Guthrie will be banned for a few more games which isn’t good for Newcastle.

  • 11 Dan13 // Sep 15, 2008 at 16:29

    Wish we got more backup
a suppose gonzalez will be slotted in for a few matches

Good work Danny boy. too bad your gonna get suspended now…….Joey must be real happy now, he has a disciple….

  • 16 Micky Toon // Sep 15, 2008 at 16:33

Look it was an accident. Players elbow, punch, head but and slap each other every week, on purpose. But the doesn’t really cause any damage unless to are on the end of a particularly vicious elbow, yet no one comes down on those guys like a ton of bricks. Yes it was nasty, but it was an accident. Move on nothing to see….

  • 17 Rem // Sep 15, 2008 at 16:34

p.s. not supporting what he did it was foolish, but i dont think he was trying to hurt him or do this.
a young man already wound up getting more wound up and losing, you can kinda understand

    but still a terbile thing

  • 18 KK FOREVER (Ross) // Sep 15, 2008 at 16:34

the lads on here shouting “gan on son” or whatever else, how old are you lot?
causing serious injury to others isnt cool boys, even if your mates try to say otherwise.
go back and watch the “tackle” (it was nothing more than a volley), and listen to the thud when he connects with his legs.

its a real shame because i’ve liked the look of him so far, but this is obviously his youth getting in the way of his footballing ability. sheer stupidity putting us under more pressure. he’ll get the book thrown at him and you’ve gotta say its deserved.

  • 19 Bungles Pocket // Sep 15, 2008 at 16:35

Gutherie may have been frustrated but that is no excuse for that kind of behaviour.
The break can’t be that serious for him to walk from the pitch mind you - but a break is a break!

  • 20 James!!!!! // Sep 15, 2008 at 16:40

i can understand that he was angry, it is understandable but ther really was no excuse a proffesional shud play like a proffesional they are meant to be role models nd that is not setting an example

  • 21 Shola Ameobi // Sep 15, 2008 at 16:43

Somebody like Gerrard or Cesc gets a three match ban, no doubt the newcastle witch hunt will land guthrie a heafty ban. Sucks becouse it means more garanteed games for our worst player this season in nicki butt.

  • 22 KK FOREVER (Ross) // Sep 15, 2008 at 16:44

mickey toon-he could have shoved him off the ball, anything else.
did you actually see the incident for yourself?
if you watch back you’ll realise he swings at him once, misses, proceeds to follow him into the corner, and makes sure he doesnt miss the second time, it was nothing short of disgusting after the embarrasment of the match.
94th minute and he decides to do that?

  • 23 James!!!!! // Sep 15, 2008 at 16:46

i think that if tht it is not ashley you shud be demonstrating against it shud be wise, it is not ashley tht is ruinin the club it is u lot nd wise, can i ask how many of u have children? and how wud u feel if u cud no longer take them to their favourite place because u are told tht they nd u are likely to get assaulted? now do u still feel proud tht u protested, i dont, however i am not a father im only 15 but still i am ashamed that i, not personally have driven a man out of his pride and joy his love

  • 27 Nick toon // Sep 15, 2008 at 16:54

    James !!!!!
if ashley had wanted to see the match that bad, surely he cudda used a box and got some hired goons in as per. the fact he is hiding behind his kids makes him even less credible in my eyes i have only once seen his kids with him, the makings of an xfactor sob story. Their favourite place? he shudda though about that before he took the heart out of SJP KK! he has tore a hole with this and has rightly suffered for it.

Besides when did the protest become a vendetta against the mafia’s kids, i think i will hang on to my kneecaps ta

    aww shut up man Ross
    just coz we’re both 15 doesn’t mean we’re stupid.
I felt for Ashley so much when reading that speech

  • 29 Mckenzie // Sep 15, 2008 at 16:54

Newcastle fans are a joke. They went KK to be reinstated. But i ask the question why would you want that? When this is the same KK give his support to the “THUG” Joey Barton. He also wanted the board to offer Owen a considerably improved new contract which owen does not deserve. You fans think own is going to stay at the toon? you must be kidding yourself, he is going to jump the ship and leave newcastle. Mark my words. Owen is going to leave to the on a free. Then you jokers will only realise that Mike Ashley was doing right in trying get rid of owen.

  • 30 James!!!!! // Sep 15, 2008 at 16:55

I 100% agree Dan13, Keegan has probably done this out of total spite even though he claims he has nothing against Ashley, Keegan is like a child, if he doesnt get what he wants he goes in a strop, he walked last time because apparently he got to attached wt a load of bollocks it was because the going got tough and he hasnt got the mental capacity to deal with it face it he’s a lunatic he needs stability not us

  • 31 Nick toon // Sep 15, 2008 at 16:56

face the facts dan the speech is having it’s intended effect aye? how come he took so long to make it? how come he was partying on the other side of the world in our time of need. this man is no leader, he only leads the line to the chip shop

and ross u r probably sum radgy tramp tht is on the dole and that is why u spend ur hours on here instead of in a job that u love, unlike ashley who has done everything that the fans wanted he brought Keegan back because the fans wanted him, so because he wants to make the club financially safe does tht make him a bad man

  • 35 Born Again Geordie // Sep 15, 2008 at 16:57

I can understand the lads frustration - but you can not condone this behaviour.

Lets face it - if it had happened to one of our players we would have been up in arms and calling for the offenders head !

  • 36 ende // Sep 15, 2008 at 16:58

I feel bad for fagan, but can’t say I don’t admire the aggression coming from Guthrie. With a little discipline, that’s exactly what we need in a future dm.

Now, Guthrie, meet Cristiano. That’s where are legends are made.

  • 37 A.L 9 // Sep 15, 2008 at 16:59

Shola, Gerrard or Cesc have not yet lashed out on someone off the ball and broken their legs so you cannot realy compare.

He’s young and lost his rag, hopefully it wont happen again but it’s not acceptable at all, Andy and co applauding him, how would you feel if it was Faygen who done the same on Danny? I doubt you wuld be saying ‘go on Faygen son’ you would be calling for his head.

  • 38 Nick toon // Sep 15, 2008 at 16:59

I agree Keegan is stroppy but ashley claims he wants to follow the arsenal model, i am pretty sure arsene wenger has final say on signings and makes sure what he is buying is of quality.

As for Ashley’s arguement that one man can’t do worldwide scouting i agree 100% but the man got it wrong signing players behind keegan back

    if this is not so

    tell me why keegan left?

  • 46 Legs // Sep 15, 2008 at 17:07

Aye, It was wrong of Guthrie.

Before that incident happened I had that fagen guy picked out as an idiot. He had his fair share of dodgy tackles in that game.

That doesn’t justify it like. Just stating that he seems like a mug.

  • 47 KK FOREVER (Ross) // Sep 15, 2008 at 17:08

james-i dont disagree that ashley may have had his best intentions for the club upon his purchase, and maybe even still now, but lets be honest, he handled some situations terribly.
and it was the fact that we’d have to wait 5 or 6 days until we heard something official from the club that got everyone so frustrated.
The past few statements he’s made have either been contradictary or lies, and the most recent was nothing more than a guilt trip!
i read it and immediatly felt sorry, so did you evidently. but sit back and you’ll realise thats exactly what he wanted!
it was a case of 1 step forward 2 steps back with ashley at the helm, sorry mate.

Nah actually I back Barton 100%.

I was actually joking about the Guthrie being a legend thing, breaking somebody’s leg isn’t a good thing at all, however, in all fairness, if it had to be any Hull player i’m glad it was Fagan lol.

spyro-Dundee, but the family are in Edinburgh these days so i’m there over the summer.

  • 52 Nicktoon // Sep 15, 2008 at 17:15

Ashley wanted this club to be run on ‘the arsenal’ model, i am pretty sure Arsene Wenger has the final say on who comes in.

Ashley also says we need an extensive scouting network as one man can’t do the job i 100% agree BUT this was not the case at toon obviously we have people taking liberties at the top and bringing in players we do not want or need.

Ashley’s credibility is soured agains when he is using his kids to get to us, i mean wtf? if he wanted to see us so bad surely he could of used a directors box? and gotten some hired goons as per. He is despicable the speech itself is so patronising X factor sob story or what. I don’t get what he is doing with us. The ’speech’ should of been made sooner he should have communicated clearly with us, if he has been listening to us, tell us you have been Mike. added to the fact that when keegan left He was partying on the other side of the world when we need reassurance most, This man could only lead the queue to the chippy.

Oh and if he does support us and if SJP is his favourite place, then why has he confused our season tickets? ripped the heart out of toon by sacking or allowing kk to leave? allowing us once again to be the laughing stock of the already biased media? T’is the snowball effect his naivity has triggered it.

  • 54 Ed Dub // Sep 15, 2008 at 17:15

It was rash and he had a rush of blood to the head.
Now he has to take the consequences of that.

I would expect a ban like Ben Thatcher got. 8 game ban with a further 15 games suspended.

To be honest he deserves it, no excuse for deliberately injuring anyone.

We are running short on midfielders now. Will we move N’Zogbi/Geremi into centre mid or start playing Smith there?

Oh the pain of it all!!

  • 75 Toon_Ksk // Sep 15, 2008 at 17:39

You can say that Guthrie intentionally kicked Fagan, but you can’t say that he intentionally tried to break Fagan’s leg. This is the exact opposite of Roy Keane’s tackle on Haaland.

Guthrie got a straight red and will serve a 3-match ban because of this and I hope the FA see some sense and not over-react by punishing Guthrie for more than he deserves.

Yes I may seem a hypocrite but i genuinely think Mike’s intentions are good.
I hate how fans like you see Keegan as some sort of angel, grow up and stop licking his arse you prick

toonpipes- well i never boycotted on saturday so why would i boycott if we signed those??
face it you ashley lovers lost, we won he’s selling up, simple as, now get over it cos its too late.

i mean if all you lot think so highly of ashley and wat he’s done then why dont you organise you own protest or whatever to get him to stay, but saying that 5 or 6 people wouldnt really say much would it.

  • 92 Nick 69 // Sep 15, 2008 at 17:52

dan13- well actually, if you read properly you fool you would know that i have said several times i don’t want keegan back as manager, i want someone new altogether along with new owners, so i think its you that is the prick

  • 93 fraser 2k8 // Sep 15, 2008 at 17:56

Fraser .. f ucking h ell .. its the concept .. what would all the anti-non geordie brigade do if we singed non-geordies - you would have to boycott right ?…c hrist this is hard work ..

  • 97 Spyro // Sep 15, 2008 at 17:59

Being stubborn doesn’t really make you a strong person Nick. I am not saying you’re stubborn, but what i am saying is Dan13 has clearly seen/read something that has affected his outlook on the situation. Surely it takes a strong person to admit to it when you are/were wrong (he obviously feels he was). IMO the weaker person would have shut it all out and continued in the same fashion.

  • 98 fraser 2k8 // Sep 15, 2008 at 18:01

  • 99 Dan13 // Sep 15, 2008 at 18:01

    thanks spyro
yes I understand the opinions of people who dislike him
but i also still believe he would do well in the long run.
    His speech really touched me

  • 100 CLINT FLICK // Sep 15, 2008 at 18:03

Guthrie didn’t mean to break the lads leg, he went in to hoof the ball away, frustrated, but missed & hoofed the lad.
    It’s a slight fracture.
But we could do without it like.

Hard luck Danny, keep your cool son.
    That’ll learn him.

  • 101 wolfhound // Sep 15, 2008 at 18:03

  • 102 Spyro // Sep 15, 2008 at 18:04

I personally feel MA was advised to make his statement. However, i do feel he is being genuine in his statement and it has probably just been tweaked a bit by the PR guys.

  • 103 hitman // Sep 15, 2008 at 18:04

im not having a pop here, but nick had a good idea, why dont all the pro ashley brigade get together and have a protest at the next home game, make your feeling knowen, you have that right, just like the anti ashley brigade have.

  • 104 Spyro // Sep 15, 2008 at 18:06

Have to disagree with you about Guthrie. I think he is a class young player myself. I also think he and Barton are the future of our central midfield area.

  • 105 Dan13 // Sep 15, 2008 at 18:06

No need Hitman, the majority have spoken.

  • 107 Nick 69 // Sep 15, 2008 at 18:07

spyro- im not stubborn, i just stand up for what i believe in, and a little speech like MA’s(which was clearly designed to make people feel sorry for him) will certainly not change what i believe.
it could also show that dan13 is easily manipulated by a speech which was designed to do exactly what it has done to dan13 and get him feeling sorry for ashley

  • 108 Dan13 // Sep 15, 2008 at 18:08

    I don’t think thats true

  • 109 Spyro // Sep 15, 2008 at 18:10

  • 110 Nick 69 // Sep 15, 2008 at 18:11

at the end of the day, im not, and have never said that ashley hasnt done some good for the club, but he made too many mistakes and sided with the wrong people at the wrong time and it has now become unforgiveable and he is no longer welcome in newcaslte. his mistakes very much outweigh the good things he done when he first took over and he has to go, simple.

  • 111 Dan13 // Sep 15, 2008 at 18:12

I think mistakes like the kev one are far less than the club being in the position as Leeds.
Which we would have been in without Mike

  • 112 hitman // Sep 15, 2008 at 18:17

dan we where never going to do a leeds, the debt ashley moaned aboot was the morgage for the ground, plus ashley told us all that he cleared the debt, and now hes telling us the the club still has a lot of debt..

  • 116 beyethegreat // Sep 15, 2008 at 18:22

personally i think keegan had every right to quit yes ma did and still does have good iintentions but his intentions were misguided he promised keegan he wouldd have final say on players not only that but they werent even tellling him who they were signing there was no communication and they were doing things behind his back which also includes selling which makes it very difficult for the manager afterall curbs quit for the same reason and he is not someone who just walks away from things

  • 117 Shot Bru! // Sep 15, 2008 at 18:22

    Spyro

I think Guthrie is ok, a bit like Scott Parker, takes one too many touches on the ball, which slows the play down too much. What does Barton bring to the team? I haven’t seen that much of him.

  • 118 Spyro // Sep 15, 2008 at 18:24

    Shot Bru

Barton on form is a very useful player imo

  • 119 CLINT FLICK // Sep 15, 2008 at 18:25

Well we’re gonna get a lot more english coaches quitting & therefore a lot more overseas coaches taking their jobs.
Rich owners don’t want the ‘old way’ of managers, it’s passe & they’re gonna protect their investment.
    Period.

  • 120 reillers // Sep 15, 2008 at 18:27

This is our big problem now, the morale of the players, losing at home to Hull is a big wake up call. We could be down by january if things don’t improve dramatically. Personally i reckon the transfer window has played a huge part in our current turmoil. the two transfer windows should be scrapped

  • 123 Toon // Sep 15, 2008 at 18:33

Thanx Spyro, it’s true isn’t it?

    Shot bru!
Yea, transfer windows should go & i’d go further & scrap buying players altogether, contensious i know, but it’s out of date too.

We just need a new coach, fast, to stop any further rot.
Hopefully, there’ll be no more girlcotts & the Lads get some proper Geordie SUPPORT, as from the next match.

  • 127 DC Magpie // Sep 15, 2008 at 18:46

Shot Bru - u crazy! Guthrie = a headless chicken out of his depth, err wha!? The man is heads and shoulders above Butt in talent. He still has plenty to learn but even as a right winger he is miles above Milner (12M). Very clever pick-up for 1M!

Spyro - I don’t think we have much of a choice :( Although I am looking forward to seeing Nacho get a whole game, and i’ll be looking at Xisco closely, I always fear with Butt in the starting line-up, he has become a total liability!

    Bring back Barton!

  • 128 CLINT FLICK // Sep 15, 2008 at 18:47

  • 129 Shot Bru! // Sep 15, 2008 at 18:49

Definitely, we have to get behind the team for every game. I reckon the long periods of silence during games has such a negative effect on our players while inspiring the opposition.

  • 130 hitman // Sep 15, 2008 at 18:49

clint, agree we need a manager in and quick, but will ashley appoint a manager with him trying to sell the club,he might just leave it to the new owner, but how long is it going to take for a new owner to come in..this is a big worry

  • 131 Lew Davies // Sep 15, 2008 at 18:49

Guys - I think a lot of us agree that KK was a twat for just walking.
There were many things he could have done from within the club. For a start he could have made wise look stupid, by not playing the players he brought in, and telling the press why.
He could have given alot more press statements etc.
Whats the worst that would happen? he would have got the sack, but at least he would have been a hero still.
But NO, he proved yet again that he hasn’t got the bottle or the stomache for a fight. He is a quitter, and I resent him for that.
By just walking out in a tantrum, he has brought this club to its knees yet again. And I for one dont want him anywhere near this club ever again.

This message from Ashley is a pile of shyte too.
No way was he threatened nor his family. Bollix.
Its been obvious he has wanted out for long enough. He’s skint!
He may well have been well intentioned at the start, but lost the plot long ago.
He says he has listened, but clearly he hasn’t heard what we were saying.
The man’s a fool and a liar and a whimp, and the sooner he sells up(at a profit of course!) the better.
All this crap about cockney etc is a total joke. why would an arab buy us incase we come out with banners slagging off the arab mafia, or the chinese mafia or the american mafia…etc etc
Some people want to grow up big style.
The press pick up on this shit and just love it.
Stop giving them the ammo to shoot us with, please.

  • 132 Lew Davies // Sep 15, 2008 at 18:53

Oh plus Guthrie is a fool, but never intentioned to fracture Faggots leg.
No doubt he/we will be well punished again by the FA.

  • 135 mozza // Sep 15, 2008 at 18:54

there’s just been some business experts on the box saying how they believe its a load if pish that possible investors would be put of buying the toon, because of recent events, they went on to say if anything it should increase the interest as now they believe ashley’s hand has been weakened and he should sell for less, however take the word should into account, if he holds out for a stupid price this could drag on and on

  • 136 Shot Bru! // Sep 15, 2008 at 18:55

If Guthrie was that much of a talent liverpool wouldn’t have let him go. If you wanna build your midfield around the likes of Guthrie and Barton, we’re gonna be mid table at best.

  • 137 CLINT FLICK // Sep 15, 2008 at 18:56

If you had the kind of anger shown against you as owner of anything, you would worry about taking your kids there & if you had security working for you, they would advise you not to put your kids in that situation.

I think we will bring in a new manager. It could take weeks, months or even years for this club to be sold to the “right” people, and i cant see Hughton staying in control for that long, especially after his poor display on Saurday.

    - FATIH TERIM PLEASE -

  • 140 Spyro // Sep 15, 2008 at 19:00

  • 141 mozza // Sep 15, 2008 at 19:01

alreet hitman, your’e right and the worry is we could get dragged into a worse version of last yers relegation battle if it does’nt get sorted, we need a quick takeover in all honesty, but i’m not so sure thats gona happen

  • 142 CLINT FLICK // Sep 15, 2008 at 19:02

It was never gonna be easy on sat though, was it?
Can’t blame Hughton too much for that.

  • 144 mozza // Sep 15, 2008 at 19:05

cant see ashley appointing a new manager as he would need a good contract and i imagine want some sort of stability and would a new manager take over a club knowing its owner does want to sell it, leaving him with the knowledge that he will at some point have to work for an owner he knows jack s**t about

  • 145 CLINT FLICK // Sep 15, 2008 at 19:06

    Aye hitman
am just trying to give the lad a break, it must be tough for the lot of them?

    Next coach please.

  • 146 DC Magpie // Sep 15, 2008 at 19:06

“If Guthrie was that much of a talent liverpool wouldn’t have let him go.” I prefer to make my own assessment. Liverpool don’t exactly have the best record of scouting talent! I would quite happily but a healthy wager on Guthrie turning out to be a far better player than Milner as well as Lucas.

“Build a team around Barton and Guthrie.” No, but with the current crop of players we have at our disposal, those two are clearly two of the most talented.

  • 147 Nick 69 // Sep 15, 2008 at 19:06

i think a midfield with barton and guthrie in the centre would be a pretty strong partnership
shot bru- how can you say barton and guthrie would be a mid table midfields when you have just admited to having not seen much of barton and therefore you could not possibly judge him fairly. imo danny guthrie will be a top midfielder in a couple of yrs

  • 148 CLINT FLICK // Sep 15, 2008 at 19:08

    Rock & a hard place.

It could take yonks to sell the club.

  • 150 CLINT FLICK // Sep 15, 2008 at 19:12

Fact is Guthrie was still a bargain.
liverpool just seem to want names.
All clubs let perfectly good players go after coming through their academies.
Even when they know they’re good. i.e. bentley at the arse. Andy Cole couldn’t get a job for bristol once.

If someone had done this to one of our players I wouldn’t be happy.

He was frustrated and did not mean to break his leg but it was immature and could be costly to the team.

Barton’s anger management guy or shrink could work full time in our changing room at the moment.
If shay can go off it then something is up and we need someone in control quickly to get the guys through this.

Not the best quality, but here’s the incident.

Lew Davies - the fact that Keegan chose not to play games and undermine the board out of spite and intentionally indirectly affect matters on the pitch are the main reason I admire the bloke. Yes, walking has had it’s own cataclysmic consequences but personally he’s more dignified doing it this way in my eyes. He recognised the battle for what it was. Lost before it began against the ‘jobs-for-the-boys’ brigade. No point in delaying the inevitable.

I see Guthrie has done exactly what most of us expected and hoped he would do. He wants to apologise and I would imagine is genuinely upset by it. Breaking someone’s leg is no fun at all if you don’t intend it. It can really effect your game. Hope he can bounce back after his suspension. Also hope Fagan makes a speedy recovery. He seems very cocky but you wouldn’t wish that on anyone.

  • 165 mozza // Sep 15, 2008 at 19:33

clint i dont think he’d come but i’d love him to, i see it like that bowburn, i felt embarassed watching his interviews on the box where he did’nt know what was going on at the club, he was left with no other choice imo and i don’t blame him one bit for it, the final week with the milner debacle and other speculated problems behind the scenes, left him with little other choice, he had to maintain some dignity

  • 166 Lew Davies // Sep 15, 2008 at 19:40

Well said bowburnMag, I agree with your comments about Guthrie, also I hear you about KK, but I just feel that was the easier option. IMO anyway.
But none of us know what was really going thru’ his mind and probably never will.

In all honesty I cant wait till we can get away from all this and get back to arguing about matters on the pitch.

everyone is prone to it though, gerrard fabregas eboue etc, so lets not get too carried away.

Totally agree with Phil Brown. Guthrie needs punished for that horrific tackle! If it had happened to one of our players, we would have been gunning for the offender now!!

It will teach Guthrie a very important lesson about behaviour on the pitch.

Lets not let him get away with it, so that another Bowyer ends up in our team!!

Guthrie should at least get six matches for his absolute thuggery. He lashed at Fagan the first time and missed, and made sure he wasn’t going to the second time. Guthrie absolutely meant to hurt him.

it was a horrible challege and does deserve a ban, but where a we going to get out back up from, we aint got no1 to come in really

  • 185 hitman // Sep 15, 2008 at 23:04

Absolutely ridiculous,” Shepherd said. “The only reason he had to pay a large portion of the debt was the cost of the stadium. But if you look at today’s prices, it was a great deal to build and expand St James’ Park when we did. What he didn’t realise was that he had to pay off the mortgage. There was a clause in the contract that if the Halls ever lost control, around £57million had to be repaid straight away.” …….
    make your own minds up

  • 186 tom tomb // Sep 15, 2008 at 23:24

He got up quick after the tackle , then Bassong shoved him and you could see he was in pain when he went backwards.
I had a hairline fracture once that kept me out 6 weeks, hurt like hell and this maybe what he has suffered. As you can more or less walk away after the incident, unlike a proper break. Shocking tackle just wish the ass ref had flagged him for trying to take him out seconds before. Would have saved two players from long term absence.

Horrendous tackle. I can’t understand how some people on here can condone it - what planet are ye living on?

anyone else keep gettin sent to the mobile version of the site when they type it into the address bar?

Ed, I have to agree with Broontoon about the quality of the advertising on the site. Some of the banners proclaiming that you have won a prize because you are the 5786546809*****7768th visitor on the site are extremely irritating.

where do we go from here man!

  • 191 brutooooon // Sep 16, 2008 at 0:31

Fagan waste some time at the corner flag…

Guthrie waste fagan’s time at the football pitch (until 3 mths?)

  • 192 Dave // Sep 16, 2008 at 0:38

If this is what the club is coming to we might as well pack in now. The tackle was a disgrace, regardless of who did it and what team they belong to and hopefully the FA will take the appropriate action and Guthrie will learn from it. I only hope he and the club have the common sense to issue an appology as there can be no excuses.

The last thing we need at the moment is bad press as moral on the team is at rock bottom and the last thing we need is key players to be suspended which in turn will put more pressure on the rest of the team.

    tom tomb - agree

when you watch it again there is a big gap between the studs up challenge and the kicking.

The Ref should have stopped it.

  • 196 Ericles // Sep 16, 2008 at 9:02

No excuse for the Guthrie tackle. Neither is there any excuse for the over the top press response either. What sort of “broken leg”? Fagan carried on playing and even Hull staff said they thought it was initially bad bruising. So, the media are now expert traumatologists are they? I bet this “broke
