Xisco - Still Time To Turn Things Around

September 17th, 2008 · 57 Comments

Xisco has become the first Newcastle player to publicly admit the crisis at Newcastle United is hurting the players.

Xisco - problems at Newcastle affecting players

The young 22 year-old Spanish striker talked about the controversy surrounding the club yesterday:

“I haven’t been able to find out too much about the causes of the controversy,” “The players are kept on the fringes of all this but these are matters that do not help the team’s performances at all.”

“We will need to remain focused, play our football and try to win matches. Then we will see what happens once the situation sorts itself out.”

“Right now we just have to concentrate on getting a good string of results and nothing more.”

We don’t know too much about Xisco, 22, but he played quite well on Saturday, and still managed to score on his debut in the 2-1 defeat by Hull, which was hardly an easy game to play in.

Despite the instability at the Tyneside club, the Spanish Under-21 international says he has been treated like a god at Newcastle and remains very optimistic about the future as he continued:

“Newcastle’s team is built to compete for a place in Europe, but it is clear we have not started the season as everyone had wished,”

“However, there is still time for us to turn matters around. Last season we started well, but that did not mean anything in the end.”

“I am sure we will climb the table by working hard. There are quality players at the club. I am confident we will improve on our poor start.”

The lad looks like another good one, and he certainly has the right attitude, and it looks like he’ll get a long run in the side with Alan Smith now looking to be on the sidelines for 3 months with an Achilles injury, which seems to require an operation.

More bad news for the club this morning - when will it end?

Soon we hope.

Comments welcome.

“Alan Smith now looking to be on the sidelines for 3 months with an Achilles injury” — there is a god :-) .. feel bad about the injury but this should help the team .. its better with him not there.
Xisco .. I do like his attitude..

  • 4 beessi-kosovo // Sep 17, 2008 at 10:20

Xisco for me was the best player on our last game and i think that he will be our best strike

  • 5 Spyro // Sep 17, 2008 at 10:21

After reading several comments about our young spaniard on previous articles i just get the feeling that many bloggers want him to fail in order to justify their crtitcism of Dennis Wise. I personally think he is a quality youngster and i hope he continues to develop here at the toon.

  • 6 Timberhead Toon // Sep 17, 2008 at 10:24

    side for West Ham

    ————————Given———————–
    Taylor—–Coloccini——Bassong—–Edgar
    Geremi—-Gonzalez——Butt——-N’Zogbia
    —————–Xisco———–Owen————

or drop Gonzalez for Martins and play 4-4-3

Dont let Ameobi any where near the side.

  • 7 sweendog // Sep 17, 2008 at 10:24

Spyro .. give it a rest .. you still manage to turn a discussion about a player into the whoel Dennis Wise .. 3 unwise monkeys debate .. give it a rest .. support the team ..

  • 8 Marcus // Sep 17, 2008 at 10:25

Ahhh bullshit as much as I can’t stand smudge no one on this club will I celebrate an injury!!!

  • 9 keep oba // Sep 17, 2008 at 10:25

Well…hes scored more goals for us than Alan Smith. And more than Ameobi has in about 2 years. I say give him a good chance.

  • 10 Timberhead Toon // Sep 17, 2008 at 10:25

    sorry 4-3-3

  • 11 Ken // Sep 17, 2008 at 10:26

A good start for the young lad on Saturday. It will take a couple of months for him to pick the pace of the premiership, only then will we be able to judge him.

I don’t want him to fail just to prove Wise wrong. I am happy for all of Wise picks to succeed. The issue is not who Wise picks in the transfer maket, but who has the final say in transfer matters.

  • 12 Spyro // Sep 17, 2008 at 10:26

That’s a bit rich coming from you isn’t it

  • 13 sweendog // Sep 17, 2008 at 10:26

    Timberhead Toon //

4-4-3 any day .. this worked the end of last season really well .. if Xisco can hold the ball up (a la Dukes) it’ll make for a tastey game ..

  • 14 Marcus // Sep 17, 2008 at 10:27

By the way…please GOD bring my boy Martins back, he’s much more of a terror than Owen

  • 15 Disheartened // Sep 17, 2008 at 10:28

It’s time to stop this madness and get behind the team instead!

Fans must know by now that their voices have been heard. Nothing good will come out from bitchin’ and moaning about things any more - there is NO NEED to add more fuel to the fire!

Support the players and get behind the team instead. They need us more than ever now…

  • 16 Toon Graeme // Sep 17, 2008 at 10:29

There is no hiding the fact that the off field issues are affecting the on field issues.

Lets hope that the boys can turn it around on Saturday and come out fighting and take the game to the hammers.

I call on our away fans to supports our team and not waste time slagging MA, DW and DL etc.

Weve done that, we have more injuries and no manager.

Time to get behind the team and I for one look forward to watching Xisco develop and give him and Gonzales 100% support.

  • 17 sweendog // Sep 17, 2008 at 10:29

Marcus .. if you read my statement I’m not celebrating his injury .. this was a light hearted joke into I’m glad he’s not playing at west ham .. lighten up mate.

  • 18 steve // Sep 17, 2008 at 10:29

Xisco looked a lot better than either Alan Smith or Ameobi, give the guy a break - it was his first game in english football and I thought he did ok.
He’ll need a few games to acclimatise to the pace of the game (Drogba / Henry took a season to really get going) It’s far to early to judge.

People are willing him to fail in order they can say the strategy of Wise and co is useless - to be fair they’ve done ok so far - certainly better than some of the foreign rubbish we’ve had over the last few years (Marcelino, Luque etc etc) all of which were bought by the then managers!

  • 19 Macas // Sep 17, 2008 at 10:30

He didn’t play well against Hull but he has got time on his side, and he did score a goal. Nacho for me looked like he will be the better player, as he always looked to receive the ball and did well considering he only arrived ata the club a few hours earlier.

  • 20 Spyro // Sep 17, 2008 at 10:33

Martins should be back for the game against West Ham, and possibly Beye as well. If this is the case then i would like a formation of

    ———————-Given——————–

    Beye——-Taylor——–Colo——-Basso

    ———————Geremi——————–

    Nacho—————Owen————-Zoggy

    ————–Xisco———Martins———–

Doubt it will happen though, Butt always ends up in the squad.

  • 21 Toon Chicken // Sep 17, 2008 at 10:34

Gan on Xisco lad - bout time for a bit of positivity me thinks.

Lead from the front on Saturday lad… 2 in 2 and you’ll be well on your way to a special place in the hearts of the Geordie boot boys! :)

  • 22 Timberhead Toon // Sep 17, 2008 at 10:39

If Beye and Martins is back play 4-3-1-2

    ———————-Given———————
    Beye—–Taylor—-Coloccini—-Bassong
    ——Gonzalez—–Butt——N’Zogbai—–
    ——————–Owen———————–
    ——–Martins———Xisco—————-

Bench Harper Edgar Geremi(maybe swap with Butt) Donaldson Ranger Tozer Cacapa

  • 23 ToonKing // Sep 17, 2008 at 10:40

I felt Xisco did really well against Hull, his first touch was a bit heavy but he turned up in all the right places, made good decisions and won most of his headers.

He will turn out to be a great acquisition imo.

  • 24 bowburnmag // Sep 17, 2008 at 10:41

He didn’t set my pulse racing but it’s fair to say he needs time to settle and it’s not the best of situations to find yourself in. Of course, it could also work in his favour by detracting from any poor displays he needs to get out of his system while everyone concentrates on the off field shenanigans. You can’t argue with a debut goal, no matter how simple, he was on hand.

  • 25 Fergie // Sep 17, 2008 at 10:42

My team for West Ham bearing in mind that Beye is still out i believe and that Edgar was piss poor against Hull:

    —————–Given—————-
    Geremi—Tayls—Colo—-Bassong
    ——————Butt—————–
    —Nacho——————N’Zogbia–
    —————–Owen——————-
    ———-Xisco——-Martins———

  • 26 Spyro // Sep 17, 2008 at 10:44

I would be happy with any of those squads in truth. Hopefully Hughton is on the same page as us this time.

  • 31 sweendog // Sep 17, 2008 at 10:50

Fergie .. thats the best formation IMO .. hopefully beye is back to add a bit of pace or attack from right back .. but definately a good attacking formation..

  • 32 Fergie // Sep 17, 2008 at 10:50

bench: Harper, Edgar, Tozer, Doninger, Duff, Ameobi, Donaldson

  • 33 Born Again Geordie // Sep 17, 2008 at 10:51

Fergie - good line up that - plus I agree Edgar was bad on Saturday seemed to wander off and make stupid mistakes !

  • 34 Grae_NZ // Sep 17, 2008 at 10:52

    Come on lads…
We could be on our way to Europe!
Think what happened at Leeds when they were docked points at the start of the (not the end, mind you) - this should galvanize the squad!
    (Fingers crossed of course).
What do you reckon the odds are?
    ;-)

  • 35 bowburnmag // Sep 17, 2008 at 10:53

Is it just me or is everyone talking about stuff do with what gans on, on the pitch? Never in the world……

  • 36 Fergie // Sep 17, 2008 at 10:57

Born Again Geordie- I know, I had high hopes for Edgar but he is starting to dissapoint me. I think in games against teams like Hull, you need your fullbacks to deliver good crosses from the overlap, as otherwise they can be hard to break down with 10 men behind the ball. Unfortunately, although he got into some good positions, his crosses never beat the first man. This is where Geremi can be a weapon against West Ham. As much as some people don’t like him, he would be a good option on the right hand side and can put in some good crosses, usually for Owen to get on the end of.

  • 37 Macas // Sep 17, 2008 at 11:00

I dont think Hughton can be given too much stick for what happened on Saturday, the squad is non-existant! And he only played Ameobi because Nacho didnt turn up until a couple of hours before the game. Yes, he should have played Nzogbia in midfield but I think it’s harsh to be giving him too much grief considering the circumstances.

  • 38 bowburnmag // Sep 17, 2008 at 11:00

Edgar is a centre half. You can get away with a game or two out of position but you’ll get found out eventually. I still rate him but needs more games in his strongest position.

  • 39 Fergie // Sep 17, 2008 at 11:08

bowburnmag- true, unfortunately for him though, he aint gonna get any games at centre half unless there is an injury or suspension. But i’d still expect him to be able to at least get his crosses off the ground!

  • 40 bowburnmag // Sep 17, 2008 at 11:13

Fergie - that’s exactly where he gets found out though for the very reasoned I mentioned. Tackling and passing, fine. Crossing is the weakest part of his game which doesn’t come naturally to him and he clearly hasn’t been practicing or been told to. Just as, on the reverse, Zogs will get past people from full-back and whip a ball in but can’t tackle for toffee. Which is why neither make great full-backs. Given the chance, I see Edgar as being as good if not a better option than Taylor, depending on who his partner is.

  • 41 bowburnmag // Sep 17, 2008 at 11:17

  • 46 laurent32 // Sep 17, 2008 at 11:31

is anyone else getting a bit sick of seeing nzogbia at left back. his lack of cover has cost us points already this season due to his defensive frailties and it also limiting our options up front as well. hopefully bassong will get a run at left back now and the zog will be pushed further up… and stay there!

  • 47 Shot Bru! // Sep 17, 2008 at 11:39

    Laurent

Totally agree, we should’ve had left back sorted out in the summer, Nicky Shorey went to the hammers on the cheap, we shoulda snapped him up. Nzogbia wowuld be excellent on the left if they played him there all the time. They should play Duff LB on sat, he’s played there once or twice for Ireland and looked pretty good

  • 48 Who is Derek Llambias? // Sep 17, 2008 at 12:19

Game at WestHam should be good atmosphere.
    - Bit of respite for our fans and players who can all concentrate on thegame of football while the ‘ammers will be up for Zola’s game in charge.
    Full house.

  • 54 bear pit // Sep 17, 2008 at 16:00

Agree with Bowburnmag’s comments about Edgar, its very difficult for a kid to join a club as a midfielder then be switched to CB then to moved as cover at RB. Positional awareness takes time to develop, I watch the young guns in the reserves and there is a lot of talent there. Edgar imo is a good player as is Kadar, Foster Lua…..The last thing these kids need is people commenting how shite they are after one or two perfomances. They often dont know they are playing until late fitness tests. In Edgar’s case he shouldnt even have played on Sat as he was injured and he asked to come off and HE wasnt responsible for any of the goals yet he received much of the criticism? Please give these kids some support and let them develop instead of slagging any of them off.

  • 55 Tom_Toon // Sep 17, 2008 at 20:25

Bear Pit - But Lualua and Kadar are only just 17 and 18 respectively, Edgar is almost 21.

Dr. Ed Harrison is a retired IBM Consulting Group Executive who now has time, and lots of it, after 34 years at the American computer company, to write about his lifelong passion - Newcastle United Football Club.

Ed was born and bred in Newcastle Upon Tyne, and watched his first game at St. James’ Park in 1949 as a 4 year-old with his Mother and Father. He was told to look out for number 9 - Jackie Milburn – the great Wor Jackie - and was he fast!

In football terms Ed was a goalkeeper and played for Wharrier Street Primary School and Newcastle Minors (Newcastle Schoolboys Under-11), in 1956 and went on to play for Newcastle Schoolboys and Northumberland Schoolboys (Under-15) in 1959 and an England Schoolboys trial.

He was at Newcastle United for a couple of years from 1960 as an amateur, while still at school, and played with Bobby Moncur and David Craig, amongst others, for the Newcastle United Under-18 side (Newcastle N’s in those days), during the relegation season of 1960-1961.

Ed attended Heaton Technical and Manor Park schools, and then went on to study at both King’s College, London (BSc Electrical Engineering) and Newcastle University (PhD Computer Science). He played for Newcastle Universities and England Universities from 1967 until 1970.

But a short couple of years after Ed joined IBM in 1970, he was shipped over to the USA, with his new wife Madeline, a beautiful local Newcastle lassie.

At IBM Ed was in computer systems and network design for 34 years, and in his last 10 years at the company was persuaded to enter executive management. where he ended up running IBM's Americas' Network Consulting Group for 5 years from the late 1990s, and was instrumental in forming the IBM alliance with Cisco Systems in 1999.

Ed and Madeline live just outside Raleigh in North Carolina. Their twin sons Paul and Neil, and daughter Elaine, are now in their early 30s, live close by, and Neil has carried on the family tradition by becoming an avid Newcastle United supporter.

And one final thing that is so true - you can take the boy out of Newcastle but you can't take Newcastle out of the boy!

    Howay The Lads!!
