Bassong Ready To Start At West Ham

September 19th, 2008 · 71 Comments

Sebastien Bassong looks to be an excellent summer signing from Metz, and the French 22 year-old has settled in well at the club, despite all the upheaval over the last few weeks.

Sebastien Bassong - looks to be great buy for Newcastle

The French defender has appeared in each of Newcastle’s last three games, having made his full debut during the 3-2 Carling Cup victory at Coventry City last month.

And, with Chris Hughton set to reshuffle the side following Danny Guthrie’s suspension, Bassong is likely to get a call-up for the East London game.

Sebastien could either play at left back tomorrow, or Steven Taylor could be moved to right back, and then Sebastien could play central defense alongside the stalwart Coloccini.

Bassong told nufcTV today:

“To make the move to Newcastle during the summer was a dream for me and then to make my debut at Coventry was a special moment,”

“But that has gone now and I must concentrate on making the most of my first-team chances.” “So far it has gone well for me personally and I hope to win a place in the team.”

“I’ve had a good pre-season and a good start so I’m fit and ready to play.” “I’ve settled in well in Newcastle and it helps to have so many French speakers here.”

It’s good to hear the youngsters being so positive, given the poor situation at the club.

There’s no doubt the likes of Sebastien and Xisco, are not only excellent young players in the making, but their attitudes are also of the highest order - and that’s very good.

We expect both Bassong and Xisco to start at West Ham United tomorrow.

Comments welcome.

I thought he said that moving to Newcastle WASN’T his dream move at the time he signed… Perhaps his dreams changed somewhat over the past month or so…

  • 3 Spyro // Sep 19, 2008 at 12:04

Quality youngster, ideally i would like our CB pairing to be Bassong and Coloccini.

  • 4 amble_ball // Sep 19, 2008 at 12:05

how can you say “there’s no doubt…that xisco is excellent young player in the making” when so far he’s put in one underwhelming 90 minutes?

  • 5 Spyro // Sep 19, 2008 at 12:11

The best strikers can have a bad game and still pop up with a goal or two. We will see if Xisco can keep this up. Anyway, he played ok apart from a on - off first half.

  • 6 51times // Sep 19, 2008 at 12:11

Nenad - Yeah, I remember that. I liked him for his honesty.

  • 7 toon mad tom // Sep 19, 2008 at 12:13

i can’t believe we played edgar instead of bassong like against hull…i was like wtf…play him from the start!!!!!!

  • 8 Spyro // Sep 19, 2008 at 12:14

    toon mad tom

Hughton had a shocker last week.

  • 9 toon mad tom // Sep 19, 2008 at 12:16

    aye ya right there spyro.

  • 10 dave v // Sep 19, 2008 at 12:17

Good luck to all the new lads, its not your fault what’s happening to our club, and if you are any good enjoy your future careers at Arsenal, Liverpool, Manu etc.

  • 11 Macas // Sep 19, 2008 at 12:30

To be fair to Hughton who did he have to pick from? Ok he maybe should have put Bassong in and put N’Zogbia in midfield, but Gonzalez only arrived a few hours before kickoff ,and most of our pitifully small squad are injured.

  • 12 Nick // Sep 19, 2008 at 12:32

Credit where it’s due. I think Colo, spidey, Bassong , Guthrie, Xisco and possible Nacho are all and could be great signings. Way better than Luque, Duff, Boumsong, Smith, Barton et al on far less money.
I still think our recruitment people were doing an Ok job. DW may be obnoxious but he seems connected, as does Jimenez.

Youth was one area KK neglected and if Ashley does sell, I hope it doesn’t mean the end of people like Kadar etc coming in.

Some of these kids will sink or swim, but I’d rather play them than tried and trusted expensive flops like Smith.

  • 13 Toon Graeme // Sep 19, 2008 at 12:33

Lets hope you he gets played for the full 90 as edgar was terrible.

Go on son and go on Toon!

    i agree Nick

  • 18 CLINT FLICK // Sep 19, 2008 at 12:42

Aye, get Bassong in the team & just in case anyone was wondering…I really think we should play him in defense. Lol

  • 19 Nick // Sep 19, 2008 at 12:42

No beye was he good? possibly under a decent manager who knows, we had that idiot souness.

  • 20 Marty // Sep 19, 2008 at 12:50

    This guy is a GEM.
great player i reckon and we could do well with him.Sell him in a few years and get a good sum or hang on to him as he is a utility player

  • 21 beyethegreat // Sep 19, 2008 at 12:50

nick believe it or not he was even worse for them than us the commentator actually said what is he doing at this level infact hes not good enough to play at any level

    Nenad The Serbian Mag…

C’mon man, how many dreams can you remember in detail? Nah, don’t answer that!!

Give the lad a break and stop takin the mickey out of him!

  • 25 beyethegreat // Sep 19, 2008 at 13:00

westoon having 1 of them is bad enough never mind both and when you consider our full backs were babayaro and carr it shows just how good given had to be and was

  • 26 Rob // Sep 19, 2008 at 13:04

Thought Xisco did reasonably well last week, put himself about won a few headers, was alwasy on the last man looking to get in behind, also his touch was good and held the ball fine

  • 27 beyethegreat // Sep 19, 2008 at 13:05

rob youre forgettting that he scored aswell

  • 28 Rob // Sep 19, 2008 at 13:09

anyone reckon he looks like shearer when he runs? same style

  • 29 Davies // Sep 19, 2008 at 13:13

Loving Bassong. He’s looked pretty steady every time he’s been out. I would certainly pair him with Coloccini in CB over Taylor.

Also, there was finally some good news for us today. It looks like Smith will be out until December.

I speak in jest of course. I know I’ll get stick for it, but I’d really like Smudge to get playing again, get a goal, get some confidence and go on a good run. Shame.

  • 30 Irish John // Sep 19, 2008 at 13:14

    Wes Toon - LMAO

  • 31 CLINT FLICK // Sep 19, 2008 at 13:15

I think smiths ‘injury’ will keep him out ’til he’s sold in jan, what do ya reckon?

    Conveinent?

  • 32 SouthLincsToon // Sep 19, 2008 at 13:17

    Team for WHU…

    Given
    Cacapa-Coloccini-Taylor-NZogbia
    Geremi-Butt-Bassong-Duff
    Owen-Xisco

Or… put NZog in CM and Bassong at LB or CB

Notes: Cacapa had played RB for Lyon and Bassong played CM in couple of NUFC friendlies.

  • 33 beyethegreat // Sep 19, 2008 at 13:17

i agree davies 9if we can get him playing again he will be a top player also some of the boos he has been getting is a bit harsh in my view i mean at the very least he works hard

  • 34 It Could Be Worse, We Could Be Spurs! (DC) // Sep 19, 2008 at 13:17

Absolutely, the guy deserves praise for being so honest. I also believe there was a lot lost in translation. I think he meant he had never dreamt of playing for Newcastle, why would he? He dreamt of playing for French teams, but the importance of this move could not be underestimated.

Quality player, reminds me of Distin.

  • 35 CLINT FLICK // Sep 19, 2008 at 13:23

Why the hell do the press seem to think smith being injured is a woe…Shows what they know.
    Idiots.
I heard some div on ssn the other day saying anal oliver was a very well respected journo on tyneside. HA.

    Do some research you divvies.

  • 36 KENNY // Sep 19, 2008 at 13:24

should play him at LB the morra, its a waste putting the zog there..

  • 37 WesToon // Sep 19, 2008 at 13:29

    @ beyethegreat // Sep 19, 2008 at 13:00

Mate dont even remind me of carr & babayaro

I just realised that, that back four might be the worst i have ever heard of in any team, that includes the defence of Derby last year!!

  • 38 Timberhead Toon // Sep 19, 2008 at 13:32

    given

    taylor
    bassong
    coloccini
    edgar

    duff
    gonzalez
    butt
    n’zobia

    xisco
    owen

  • 39 ScottyT // Sep 19, 2008 at 13:33

    my team would be:

    given
    geremi taylor coloccini bassong
    duff butt nacho nzogbia
    xisco owen

subs: harper edgar cacapa doninger donaldson danquah shola (i spose) - very weak bench :(

  • 40 Toon Graeme // Sep 19, 2008 at 13:36

Seems as though the press are just jumping on the smith injury. Weve know he was crocked for a while.

Its no great loss. Not as though he will be missed warming the bench.

Cant wait til the match tomorrow.

Anyone on here going? And if so - dont bother your breath about the board - SUPPORT our boys and lets hope 3 point in the bag.

On another topic - Smoggies and against the Mackems on SS1 tomorrow. My money on Borough to win. They are above us anyway so it doesnt matter. But the mackems - HATE that team!!!

  • 41 WesToon // Sep 19, 2008 at 13:37

    Team To play the hammers…..

    Given
    Geremi Taylor Collo Bassong
    Duff Butt Nacho N’Zog
    Xisco Owen

  • 42 Tom // Sep 19, 2008 at 13:38

    Given
    Geremi, Coloccini, Taylor, Bassong
    Duff, Nacho, Butt, N’Zogbia
    Xisco, Owen

Harper, Cacapa, Martins, Edgar and 3 others (Danquah, Ranger, Tozer probably)

Or 4-3-3 with these forming the sets of 3

    Nacho, Butt, N’Zogbia
    Owen, Xisco, Duff

  • 43 WesToon // Sep 19, 2008 at 13:39

    Sorry ScottyT….

    Your post wasnt up yet,heheh

But spot on mate, great minds think alike OR fools never differ?? Hopefully option A

  • 44 ScottyT // Sep 19, 2008 at 13:45

haha ne probs wes. probably the second one tbh :)

think thers a lot of people who think that should be the team. only other option is taylor to right back nd eitha cacapa or bassong to cb. but zog shouldnt be used anywhere but midfield as a defender he really is shocking.

  • 45 WesToon // Sep 19, 2008 at 13:56

    @ ScottyT

    HAhaha,classic mate

    What aboot this though….

    Given
    Geremi Taylor Collo Bassong N’Zogbia
    Butt Nacho Duff
    Xisco Owen
5-3-2 formation,N’zogbia & Geremi as wing backs so the Zog wont be playing as an out & out defender??

  • 46 Tom // Sep 19, 2008 at 14:04

Wes, thats not a bad idea tbh mate. Houghton will never go for that though! Lol.

SSN saying that apparently we are “gutted” that smith may be out for some time. Are we? I don’t remember them asking me,has anyone else been canvassed about this?

  • 50 ScottyT // Sep 19, 2008 at 14:12

wes - not a bad idea i spose. would definetly be different to what wer used to but like tom says thats a risk that am pretty sure hughton wont want to take.

nd micepie - tbh am pretty sick of all this management talk its a disgrace how our club is being run yes. but atm i just want to try and support the players and our team and talk about matters on the pitch for a change.

  • 51 TOONPIPES // Sep 19, 2008 at 14:12

Bassong = Class … ANOTHER excellent signing ..

  • 52 WesToon // Sep 19, 2008 at 14:12

    @ Tom // Sep 19, 2008 at 14:04

Cheers Tom,my only worry aboot that formation,is our midfield might get over run, thus putting to much pressure on the deffence!! BUT if Owen drops deep & collects the ball it will help, because he uses the ball wisely(Sorry Lads for even using a word with the letters w i s e in it :-) ) Also Geremi & The Zog must play high up on the pitch pushing their full backs & wingers back into there own half

  • 53 TOONPIPES // Sep 19, 2008 at 14:13

Sctotty .. any suggestions for manager? ..

  • 54 WesToon // Sep 19, 2008 at 14:21

    @ Micky Toon // Sep 19, 2008 at 14:11

Not in the slightest mate :-) SSN has turned to the Fecking dark side recently Lad,p!sses me off tbh!!!

  • 55 Tom // Sep 19, 2008 at 14:21

    It could work Wes, definitely.

I think we could get away with playing 4-3-3 as long as we told Butt that, on no account, was he to pass the halfway line (as I’ve said dozens of times! Lol) By having Geremi, Colo, Taylor, Bassong and Butt defend that means Nacho, N’Zogbia, Xisco, Owen and Duff can attack to their hearts content, provided they also do some leg work to defend of course!!

  • 56 ScottyT // Sep 19, 2008 at 14:23

toonpipes - havnt really got a clue mate lol.

i still think kk is right for us and shearer should get a shot at it soon enough so that we are not always saying that if someone fails shearer will be in. but.. kk coming back now would be a bit embarassing really and shearer isnt stupid enough to take the job in these circumstances.

so like i say ill leave this to our ‘brilliantly’ structured joke of a board..

  • 57 ScottyT // Sep 19, 2008 at 14:24

w/e happens though. ashley needs to sell so that whoever buys the club can bring in his own man and we can get behind him whoever that may be.

and plz whoever takes over get rid of wise nd llambias fgs man.

  • 58 KK FOREVER (Ross) // Sep 19, 2008 at 14:25

Micky Toon- thats ridiculous mate! they’re calling it a huge blow for us etc etc, god knows how they’ve worked that one out!?
its not even the fact that alot of newcastle fans (although admiring his heart) think he’s useless, its the fact that he hasnt been starting at all recently anyway.
they’ll say anything to report a story on us!

  • 59 TOONPIPES // Sep 19, 2008 at 14:29

Wudnt want Keegan back man! .. he cannit handle the job .. Shearer is no where near ready!! .. he hasnt even been and done Birtley yet - nee way he would come in now ……. i havent got a f cuking clue who we could go for .. partle becos im not sure that anyone that is half decent would come becos they arent a geordie and they would have been appalled at the anti-cockney stuff ..

  • 62 bear pit // Sep 19, 2008 at 14:34

I would play Bassong at CB with Colo instead of Taylor. I’ve said for a while Taylor is much more suited as a RB as he likes to get forward and has less to think about in terms positional play. But he would be on the bench as cover for Beye when fit. Edgar should put a transfer request in as asap and leave the club, the last thing a kid needs is to get slated like he has and be used as a scapegoat. I think the kid has had a raw deal at the club for many reasons.

  • 63 Xsico golden boot // Sep 19, 2008 at 14:34

Think if we could I Would definitely go for a foreign manager as we don’t want another cockney at the club lol Any way all the top managers are foreign there is not one English manager in the top four

  • 64 bowburnmag // Sep 19, 2008 at 14:39

I’d give Bassong the benefit of the doubt with the “dream move” thing and agree it’s all down to interpretation. I’m guessing he was originally being honest and we weren’t originally ‘on his radar’ (gag at business cliche) but he’s obviously since able to look with hindsight and agree it’s a bit ofa good deal all round getting into the Premiership at a young age. Although if he looked really hard now with hindsight he might well think it was more of a nightmare he’d stepped into than a dream. Good recruit, credit where’s it due to player and scouting. Expecting great things from him based on what I’ve seen.
