Report That Venables Rejects Newcastle Advances

The People is reporting this morning that Terry Venables has turned down the manager’s job at Newcastle United.

Terry Venables – praying while assistant to England’s Steve McClaren 😀

Venables was reportedly made an offer by owner Mike Ashley but refused the opportunity to end his five-year absence from management.

We hope this story is true, because it’s at least suggesting that Ashley realizes he must fill the vacant manager position at the club quickly, to halt our slide down the league, before we hit rock bottom.

Now The People is reporting that Ashley will turn his attention to former Liverpool boss, Gerard Houllier. But we think Gerard is too smart to take the job, which will be temporary at best.

Venables is now 65, and of course another cockney, so how well that would have been received by the Geordie masses, is debatable.

The People is also reporting that Ashley has cut his asking price for the club to £350M, but where exactly they get that information from has to be highly suspicious.

Surely a reasonable price is somewhere in the range of £270M, which gives Mike about a £30M profit in 16 months, which is not too bad at all.

But we expect a new manager to be appointed, because otherwise we will soon be bottom of the league, and Ashley will have even more trouble selling the club.

Comments very welcome.

If Venables doesn’t want the coaching role at Newcastle we are definitely in deep poo.
I expected him to aid Ashley’s cause, steady the club for a sale around December and walk away with a nice fat cheque.
Ashley will have to salvage his investment but is unlikely to make a profit and the toon with new owners may be forced to battle out of the championship.
If that happened we might even have a club owned by local people and run similar to Barca.
The never ending story of Newcastle under achievement continues.

I for one will support who comes in 100%. If we don’t we will be playing championship football next season.

Come on Ashley you utter tit, get someone in, better stll, bring back KK and sack your puppet muppets. We have 6 points less than we would have had if KK had been in charge and been allowed to bring in just 2 of his own players in the window.

‘another cockney’!! i was never, until very recently aware how ignorant the geordie nation is?! okay there’s always going to be the odd hitman around, but this anti cockney, southerner thing is stupid!

KK wasn’t a geordie, and most of our players aren’t either? is there enough local talent to get us to the upper reaches of the premier league? if so i’m not aware of it?

look at the teams that actually achieve anything in the pl, hardly heavily localised in there staff? or fans for that matter, we’ll maybe that’s the problem then!

sorry yeah baz- beardsley and shearer would be great! fans like them, but they hardly have any experience or cridentials to manage a football team! and i doubt either of them would be foolish enough to come anywhere near this mess.

dreaming, and i’m glad, it’s just a dream.

Clinta, it’s the cockney’s who have thrown us into the downward spiral we’re in. We all know that the Cockney Mafia is trying to enlist their pals so they can run the club exactly how they want it to be run – which is usually fair enough provided they take the fans opinion.

Oh, and talking about Beardsley and Shearer’s credentials – neither does Ashley.

Some sense from Clinta. The term cockney is quite specific. It means born within the sound of the bells of St Mary le Bow in the City of London. It also refers to a way of speech. Wise is not a cockney. Venables like the others is a Londoner. What is a NUFC fan these days? My family are all Geordies but in terms of ancestry we include Cumbrians, Northumbrians (even a mackem from 1851), one from Dumfries, and my father married a south Londoner. My father played as a junior for Newcastle United Swifts in the late 1920’s – his mum came from Tynemouth. Some of my distantly related relatives (the Hedley’s) played for NUFC around 1905. Some of my ancestors (Richardsons and Hedley’s) are border reiver names (far north of Newcastle). Others are the Robson’s (now there is a Geordie name). It is not the geographical origin (London or otherwise) that is the issue.
It is the fact that NUFC is run by London money, London attitudes and London peole who have no allegiance or heritage for Newcastle at all. Rob Lee was a Londoner, as was Malcolm MacDonald – I rest my case. We must not fall into prejudices. It is up to the Geordies who we bestow honorary Geordie upon – nobody else.

OK. KK is not a Geordie. I believe his dad was a Durham miner though? Is Harper a Geordie as he comes from Easington? For me I think it is great to see blogs from fans all over the world on this site. The last time I got a taxi from Central Station the driver was born in Newcastle but his dad was from Pakistan. That is why I have always known that the Geordie Nation is more than NUFC – the club and its fans are central, the heart and soul and that which unites many people. Our United does not include Wise, Ashley, or any other opportunist entrepreneur who thinks we are some easy meat for a quick buck in London. Remember, there used to be a big NUFC in London. Remember, there used to be lots of NUFC and Geordie fans in Buckingham. Ashley comes from there but he is no fan nor has he any Geordie connections. As was said Ashley owns the club, NOT THE FANS, wherever they live or come from.

    No legends Please!!!!

The look for a manager must not be rushed. The last time we rushed for a manager we got Keegan.
The problem with Legends is that they come in looking to maintain or enhance their reputation making them ever so shortsighted. That is not what we need. We need a manager who knows he is not going to win the league soon.

A manager who is going to grind out results, no need to open bottles of champagne on the pitch to produce the so called entertaining football.

    No Shearer!
    No Beardsley!
    No Keegan!

Someone like Martin O’Neil would be very good.

It might be a completely idiotic idea – it probably is – but maybe Ginola? Brooking helped West Ham out in a crisis years ago and did well. At least Ginola (with Hughton assisting and focusing on the defence) may work for a few months…

Good, glad he turned it down. Why? Two reasons: first he’s not the great coach he used to be; and second he is (despite my last comment) still massively respected by players and lots of people in football generally. If he’s turned Ashley down it just shows how far MA has screwed things up.

    More pressure to sell.
