Newcastle Appoint Seymour Pierce Bank - Issue Statement

September 22nd, 2008 · 243 Comments

Newcastle United Football Club have appointed London-based investment bank Seymour Pierce to handle the sale of the club.

Mike Ashley - attempting to sell Newcastle United

The chairman of Seymour Pierce is Keith Harris, who was involved in selling Chelsea to Roman Abramovich in 2003, and who has recently been brought in to help Mike Ashley sell the club he only bought in May of last year.

The former Football League chairman also brokered the deal that saw Thaksin Shinawatra take over Manchester City last year, and was involved in the buying of West Ham United, which was fronted by the Icelandic businessman Eggert Magnusson.

Keith was also involved in the acquisition of Aston Villa by Cleveland Browns owner Randy Lerner.

Newcastle owner Mike Ashley is following the Newcastle fans’ wishes that he sell the club, after allowing Kevin Keegan to leave the club dramatically this month, just after the transfer window closed.

It appeared that players were being bought and sold by the newcastle Board, without the manager Kevin Keegan being told of what was going on.

A Newcastle United statement today said:

“The board of Newcastle United can confirm it has appointed the London-based investment bank Seymour Pierce to act on the potential sale of the club.”

“All matters relating to the sale of the club, including inquiries from interested parties, should go through Seymour Pierce.”

“The club will be making no further comment at this time.”

The sooner the club finds a buyer the better, and certainly Keith Harris has an excellent recent track record in this business - so that’s good news.

Comments welcome.

The only real worry is, look at the mess Harris made oc selling City to a con man, we cant afford the same to happen to us

As I posted yesterday, the club is now SOLD and the buyers are carrying out due diligence. Hence the reason they have brought in pierce bank to oversee the sale.

Any clues ToonLoney? Kevin in an earlier link was going on about Albini (sorry, know I’ve spelt his name wrong) and that the club is £50m in debt. Could there be some truth in this?

  • 18 Alex // Sep 22, 2008 at 21:02

Any one will be better than Ashley . If it is the Nigerians then they want Keegan as manager , as things stand at the minute that would be the best option , he knows the players and that will at least stabilise the club .

  • 19 King Kev Foreva // Sep 22, 2008 at 21:05

All I hope for is a quick sale, but also a good one… I am worried about the Nigerians story… scraping together another 50 million to get the club… sorry but this does not sound like very rich people which we need… look at Fat-Ash he has billions and was still a cheap skate… We need someone with more money than Fat-Ash has so we can actually buy some players… Please god let someone rich come in and buy us, reinstate Keegan and give hum funds and power and a chance to see if her can do it again… that’s all we want

  • 20 tom tomb // Sep 22, 2008 at 21:10

NUFC Nigeria ganiyu -black and white mate. Nigeria is an up and coming country with rich resources. If they buy us and put money in and respect the fans-bring it on.

  • 21 tom tomb // Sep 22, 2008 at 21:12

Think the Nigerian story could be a patsy from Ashley -to raise the bids from other suitors.

  • 22 leo // Sep 22, 2008 at 21:13

maybe ashley didnt spend because he didnt have the ‘liquidity’ he has made some bad financial choices recently.

Just becz the nigerians r having 2 ’scrape together’ 50mil more doesnt mean they wont be able to back the club in the xfer market, it seems like there is a decent sized group of wealthy nigerians involved maybe they wil all put so much in each year etc…

My main worry is to wether this is just a means 4 these nigerians to ‘clean’ their ‘dirty’ money, bit like the ex mancity boss…

  • 23 simon376 // Sep 22, 2008 at 21:15

tom tomb, I wondered the same thing. Can’t see anybody wanting to pay that much for the club, but with “an offer” coming in, might make somebody think and up the price after his middle east trip

  • 24 Spitfire // Sep 22, 2008 at 21:16

Here is my fantasy scenario: Newcastle absolutely tonk Spurs on Wednesday in the cup leading to the dismissal of Ramos. Poyet gets the Spurs job and Wise goes to work with him. Ashley is let off the hook by Wise going, sees the light keeps Newcastle brings back Keegan and its onwards and upwards.

  • 25 The Entertainers // Sep 22, 2008 at 21:18

One thing i do know, anyone coming in can surely only improve us.

I have never, i mean never felt this low!

Bring on the Nigerians, the Indians, the Arabs….i dont care at this point.

Because the way we’re going we wont get a new manager and no money and no PL soon.

  • 26 simon376 // Sep 22, 2008 at 21:19

Well one part of that would work Spitfire, Wise going would mean no pay off from Ashley or whoever buys the club.

  • 27 tom tomb // Sep 22, 2008 at 21:20

Simon it is a possibility, but can’t see any self respecting billionaire falling for it. Unless they are stupid enough to not to do due dilligence etc etc.

  • 28 Spyro // Sep 22, 2008 at 21:20

I would be happy with that Spitfire, well apart from the part where KK returns. I don’t want a coward at the helm.

  • 30 Nick 69 // Sep 22, 2008 at 21:21

spitfire- ther is no way back for ashley now, its gone too far and he will never been welcomed back, even if he brought keegan back it wudnt make that much of a difference because as far as im concerned its more about not wanting ashley at the club thn wanting keegan as manager

  • 31 King Kev Foreva // Sep 22, 2008 at 21:21

Don’t trust Nigerians… Lived there for 13 years and I just would not be happy if we went down that path… no trust in em what so ever…

  • 32 humberto gonzales // Sep 22, 2008 at 21:22

Why doesn’t Michael Owen speak out for the players, he could come out and say if the lads want KK to return? he’s got the ball in his court at the moment and has nowt to lose coz chances are he’ll be away in Jan anyway. I would doubt if MA would reprimand him as he’s 1 of the only assets left at the club. waddya think

  • 33 simon376 // Sep 22, 2008 at 21:23

Still cant see why so many support Ashley. Yes he’s paid off some debt but not all of it like he once said I seem to recall him saying “this is the only club that doesn’t owe a penny to anybody” yet all of a sudden he says there still is debt.

I’m not saying he had to pay it all off, clubs should be able to do that themselves over time and for his sake he can get out of it what he put in. But as for the club, he’s turned it into a hopless mess. His structure has failed and only one manager in England has said he would be willing to work under it and that would be southgate. We are sinking and fast and thats down to Ashley. Before anybody jumps in and says Keegan left us and thats the problem, he went on priciple because of Ashley as he is the PROBLEM!

Spitfire Get real mate Ashley seeing the light , Never . Now us tonking the spuds yes that would cheer every one of us up . With Oba back and these rumours that we could be took over soon may well lift the players and we give them the usual hammering :)

  • 41 Spitfire // Sep 22, 2008 at 21:30

Agree with you Simon but I am just thinking about some temporary breathing space and a little stability. If we are not sorted by the end of October I think we are quite literally doomed to relegation. I have some misgivings about any Nigerian takeover. If we have missed out on Arab and Indian money then Ashley or even Fat Freddie seem the next best - sorry the least worst options in the short term

  • 42 toonfan67 // Sep 22, 2008 at 21:32

  • 43 tom tomb // Sep 22, 2008 at 21:33

simon I may be wrong but I doubt the Nigerian thing will happen. Why throw all there big guns into Dubai, then get an offer from Africa? They decided they wanted us after the Man utd game, according to ssn. A lot of things have happened since that game, to extinguish any interest made then.

I think the bottomline is that MA is selling his club. I am just tired of waiting forever and ever, so are we, right?

The next day I am going to expect some news from Seymour Pierce.

P.S. Ed, would you not reuse the picture with MA talking to the reporter please? For some unknown reason, I don’t like that picture that he looked a bit … I don’t know, erm… silly. lol

  • 53 Mag1Pie // Sep 22, 2008 at 21:48

toonLooney27 is talking nonsense….’all interested parties should direct their inquiries to Seymour Pierce’…toonLooney27…come on mate why on earth would Mike Ashley bring in a third party to help sell a club if he had already found a buyer?…that would mean he would be spending unnecessary consultancy costs…sorry mate but your statement is totally illogical…

Yeah KK Forever, don’t mind having some debt as all clubs have it. Really clubs should be able to handle that and pay it off over time with all the tv money etc. Maybe we are lucky to have our mortgage paid off and in a better postion than some. I just dont like the way he bragged last year saying all paid off and now saying something totally different. If he had said he had paid of the mortgage but still had to pay off transfers, we would have all been happy and balming the old board. As it is, we’ve heard him lie and make us think even less of him

What a f*cking idiot Ashley is… Instead of appointing a great manager in Keegan and getting rid of 3 underqualified and unnecessary members of London based staff… He thinks he has to sell the club. “I can’t go to the game in fear of getting attacked” OH, why is that? Becuase you let Keegan go.

Ashley, there is a very quick and easy solution to this which will please the players and win every fan you’ve lost back. Bring back Keegan.

    1. dennis wise
    2. derek llambias
    3. tony jimiez
    4. no communication with fans
    5. no commitment to the club(i.e prefering to stay on the lash in new york than sort the problems out)
6.constant lies- i.e i paid all of the debt off out of my own pcket, then its i paid most of the debt off, now its the club still have lots of debt.

  • 106 AndyNUFC // Sep 22, 2008 at 23:03

    Harper

    Geremi/Edgar Taylor Coloccini Bassong
    Butt
    Geremi/Martins N’Zogbia
    Gonzalez
    Xisco Owen

Sorry but Hughton’s team selection against West Ham was shocking, maybe he wants the record of Premier League’s slowest midfield.

  • 107 nate dawg // Sep 22, 2008 at 23:03

    my team would be

    harps
    gerimi taylo colo bassong

    nacho owen butt zog

    martins xsico

the team if all were available

    given

    beye colo talor enrique

    nacho barton guthrie zog
    owen
    martins

    harps
    kadar
    bassong
    duff
    gerimi
    viduka
    xsico

  • 108 Ganiyu // Sep 22, 2008 at 23:05

Bassong looks more calm than taylor.

  • 109 Nick 69 // Sep 22, 2008 at 23:07

nate dawg- u seem to be missin our best player out of your ‘if they were all available’ team

  • 110 nate dawg // Sep 22, 2008 at 23:07

i agree bassong looks good but i dont think we seen him play a really good side yet so still a bit of a gamble

  • 111 AndyNUFC // Sep 22, 2008 at 23:07

No idea why people are dropping Owen back to this deeper role again sorry, fair enough last season in a different formation he started games in that position, but got all of his goals in the typical goal poachers, fox in the box position.

  • 112 nate dawg // Sep 22, 2008 at 23:08

    nick 69 enlighten me ?

  • 113 micknufc // Sep 22, 2008 at 23:09

no more than a gamble than putting edger there nate

  • 114 Nick 69 // Sep 22, 2008 at 23:09

    guttierez

  • 115 Ganiyu // Sep 22, 2008 at 23:11

    Andy- edgar is a dm

  • 116 nate dawg // Sep 22, 2008 at 23:11

agree 100% mick just saying cause a lot of people are praising him an so on, but i would start him ahead of edgar definatly just for physical strength

  • 117 nate dawg // Sep 22, 2008 at 23:12

dame it yeah i did cheers mate replace nacho with him then wa u think

  • 118 micknufc // Sep 22, 2008 at 23:13

andy i reckon it’s coz last season he looked so comfortable ther.linking play well and also notching a few arriving late apposed to sniffing.
i know its early days with him and xsico, but i was a bit worried on saturday they didnt seem to be anywhere near the same wavelength..but early days

  • 119 Nick 69 // Sep 22, 2008 at 23:14

probly th same team i wud go 4, think it pretty much picks itself wen they all fit

  • 120 AndyNUFC // Sep 22, 2008 at 23:15

Ganiyu, Edgar is not a defensive midfielder.

  • 121 nate dawg // Sep 22, 2008 at 23:16

i quite like the look of xsico, we gotta remember he has been thrown in the deep end, only signed as one for the future and as a back up for first team

  • 122 micknufc // Sep 22, 2008 at 23:18

aye deffo nate, thats something that stood out for me on the few times ive seen him.. but confidence aswell.he looks like he has is it where edgar looks like he’s shitting it.i wouldnt mind but a the few times edgar has filled in at centre half i think he’s been canny

  • 123 micknufc // Sep 22, 2008 at 23:22

agreed nate..dont want to sound like im having a go at the lad, must be awful for him what he has come into. here’s hoping we get some news very soon that this nightmare is over eh?

  • 126 HATE PRAWN SANDWICHES // Sep 22, 2008 at 23:28

the 11 for wednesday’s squad imo would be:

    Harper

    Geremi / Edgar / Taylor / bassong
    ————-Colloccini
    Duff———————–N’zogbia
    ————-Owen
    ———————Martins
    Xicso

Subs: Given, Butt, Nacho, Cacapa, Ranger ??????

  • 129 micknufc // Sep 22, 2008 at 23:35

im so excited that oba is fit for wed,coz his shear will to win will give us a massive boost.
to many of the players got the lip on for me like.
they think it’s bad try supporting the club for 30 odd years

  • 130 HATE PRAWN SANDWICHES // Sep 22, 2008 at 23:39

  • 134 Jude // Sep 22, 2008 at 23:43

If we lost this match on Wednesday…i blame the headless lot who shouted at, protested against and threatened ashley and co to get out…had it not been u lot, we might have a sensible manager for a change at post and stand a better chance of fielding a strong squad…right now i just know…

Everybody is hopin for this nightmare for this to end soon. I say all those who started this are the foolish lot…the man who resigned and deserted the squad and the headless lot who cried foul cuz he upped and left….

I’m so f***ing pissed off right now. i think i’m reaching ma breakin point…article after article aba this club…tabloids callin us toons….being made the laughing stock of every club…i think it’s getting to me…and all because of a few…no a lot of headless fools…

I’m out….u know what..?.. right now i don’t care anymore so anyone can wreck the club as much as they want…

  • 135 micknufc // Sep 22, 2008 at 23:43

    prawno
i’ll be straight up and down with you here mate
it will look like a simod cup game back in the 80’s but 100 times worse.
i know you have been big on the boycott etc.unfortunatley i struggle to follow that line im alittle bit black n white blinkered for that lol.
but money and family stopped me doing cup games about 2 years ago so maybe im in no place to comment.but an empty sjp in my humble opinion will only help the yids..soz like

  • 136 TOONPIPES // Sep 22, 2008 at 23:44

With you Jude son, that’s been my line since the dau keegan spat the dummy and landed us in this pile of s hite . .

  • 137 danuneek // Sep 22, 2008 at 23:46

I just wish I had the money, because I truly believe I could run Newcastle United. I personally think Ashley was doing well, he made one or two major faults. I like the idea of signing young unknown players with potential, I like the idea of having a scouting team and investing money sensibly. What I dont believe in is having that scouting team above the manager, an owner who stands with the fans wearing a newcastle shirt, the need for a director of football nonsense and allowing Mort to ever leave.

  • 138 TOONPIPES // Sep 22, 2008 at 23:47

Ziad you got half yer post right, win against spuds being god, but the bit about MA selling up is wrong - in my opinion - HITMAN will tell you I’m wrong + HPS

  • 139 micknufc // Sep 22, 2008 at 23:48

    jude
im with you a bit there like
im a bit embarresed at the way people of newcastle, northumberland etc have been made to look,by these nobs outside the ground..they havent the sense to see the media are stting them up..ahh its an awful mess lads!

  • 140 TOONPIPES // Sep 22, 2008 at 23:50

Yes Mick, wit you too. . Its been embarassing

  • 141 micknufc // Sep 22, 2008 at 23:54

    toon pipes
mozza is spot on imo.. but hitman hearns bloody hell, bet theres nowt left of his keyboard!! i only asked where abouts in south shields he was from.

  • 142 simon376 // Sep 23, 2008 at 0:00

we need to beat spurs if the story is true about wise joining poyet if they lose against us.

As for Ashely selling up, we need him to and need it done quick. There is no way Ashley can be defended. he lied to us and has sent the club moving backwards and fast

Yes the press my have set the fans up outside the ground, I wasn’t there and yes at some times cringed, but I back them for what they did. If it wasn’t for them, we wouldnt be getting rid of Ashley

This comes from a fan of many years, one who’s cousin used to play for the club and a fan who 17 years ago was very involved with the club.

  • 143 micknufc // Sep 23, 2008 at 0:03
