Steven Taylor – I’m Happy At Newcastle

September 22nd, 2008 by Ed Harrison · 137 Comments

There are some daft reports in today’s papers that Newcastle United have been rejected by 8 management candidates, and that up to 11 of our players will want to leave the club in January.

Steven Taylor – smashes rumors he wants to leave

Give us a break – please!

Newcastle United center-back Steven Taylor has today dismissed stupid rumors linking him with a move away from St James’ Park in the January transfer window.

The 22-year-old local lad, who was born in Greenwich, but moved to Tyneside when he was just 2 weeks old, signed a new four-year contract in the summer.

Steven has said the managerial and ownership problems surrounding the club right now, will not force him to consider a move. We suppose he’s used to all the turmoil that has surrounded our club over these last several years.   :(

Steven told the Shields Gazette today about the reports:

“I don’t know where this has come from, it’s news to me.” “I’m happy at Newcastle United, I wouldn’t have committed my future here if I wasn’t.”

“I just want the fans to know the players are hurting and desperate to turn things around.”

“They’ve been fantastic and got behind us, despite everything that’s been going on, and we want to give them something to shout about.”

Since Kevin Keegan resigned, both Steven and the great Fabricio Coloccini have both been off their top form, and that has cost us some goals in our two defeats.

We have to hope the lads will be a lot better against a poorly performing Spurs outfit on Wednesday evening, and a win would be a great tonic for everybody associated with the club.

We have to have some good news sometime – don’t we?

Comments welcome.

What is going on – glad Taylor has spoken out. Is Geremi talking out of his arse? If we the fans and supporters are affected by the carnage meted out by the London mafia on NUFC, then the players must be too. It seems, as has been the case for months, that NUFC fans are getting shafted by Ashley’s London based Committee of Saboteurs and the London based media pundits. It feels like and looks like a conspiracy of unholy shite against NUFC and the north east. Recent press articles have served up a disgraceful barrage of prejudiced insults that are deliberately orchestrated against NUFC fans and Newcastle itself. A national disgrace! I am even more proud of the “Geordie Passport” I bought in Granger Market now. Howay the lads on Wednesday – let us show London what we can really play like.

Maybe Taylor should get a part time job in the PR team at newcastle, he loves talking to the media, but atleast this time i’m glad his come out and put bollocks to bed, before to many fans start slagging him off as a trator.

Slightly off topic but I see Mike Ashley has just lost £300 million on his bets on HBOS on the stock market

maybe thats why he is sticking out for £400 million for Newcastle, mpney is getting tight, even for him !!

  • 19 Spyro // Sep 22, 2008 at 3:28 PM

Taylor needs to be dropped as he makes the same dumb mistakes year in and year out and is showing no signs of improvement, bench time for him. Bassong now deserves a shot next to Colo.

  • 20 Spyro // Sep 22, 2008 at 3:32 PM

MA is really beginning to piss me off now. This nonsense talk of a 400million price on our club is ridiculous. Is he that greedy? We are not worth a penny over 250-300million in our current state and it is time for him to shut up and sell now. He is just hurting the club by dragging this on.

Alex – If that is true, then that alone should be incentive enough for every single fan to get behind the team and support them like nothing else.

Spyro I agree with you about Taylor

  • 27 micepie // Sep 22, 2008 at 4:00 PM

Just to make a change from the cursing and pissed-off posts, who would fans ideally like to see in as a new manager if we get bought? And who as an ideal interim manager, being realistic? Who would you be least happy with?

Though I never thought I’d say this a year ago, personally I’d go for Sven as a permanent manager (or coach). Least favourite as a choice would probably be Ince.

Choice if interim is a tough one. If it were Venables, I wouldn’t be so unhappy – at least a calm head for a while. If he were given enough autonomy (can’t help thinking of the word fartonomy when I say that, as that’s a word my wife uses!) Venables might even be able to bring in Shearer to help out too. But ideally….maybe Terim?
    Least favourite interim? Dalglish praps.

  • 28 Micky Toon // Sep 22, 2008 at 4:07 PM

Sven is a brilliant coach. However I still think Houlier is the thinking mans choice. I was championing Houlier to come before “the messiah”, meh, arrived.

  • 31 51times // Sep 22, 2008 at 4:16 PM

While Tom_Toon’s dislike for Taylor seems a bit over the top, he hasn’t been in good form at all and doesn’t deserve a starting place.

  • 32 Born Again Geordie // Sep 22, 2008 at 4:19 PM

51 times – agreed but neither does Edgar – particularly when we have Bassong on the bench. Edgar was shocking against Hull and not much better against West Spam!

    Would you agree ?

  • 33 Ganiyu // Sep 22, 2008 at 4:20 PM

Spurs are loosing their patience with ramos.they are all sacred of oba.taylor is ok but i wont hesitate to put bassong.a younger lad can take over and profit would be made.

  • 34 51times // Sep 22, 2008 at 4:23 PM

Yeah, in his defence Edgar isn’t a fullback. Though I don’t think he’s strong enough to play CB either…needs to be loaned out I think.

  • 35 steve // Sep 22, 2008 at 4:24 PM

    @ed – “the great collocini”

I’m not sure what you’re basing that statement on, he’s looked anything but great playing for the toon.

In fact the whole back four have looked suspect this season (not surprising really if we insist on playing zogs at LB, Edgar at RB

  • 36 Ganiyu // Sep 22, 2008 at 4:27 PM

Edgar needs motivation he is originally a defensive midfielder

  • 37 51times // Sep 22, 2008 at 4:27 PM

steve – Like you say, we need proper fullbacks playing. Once things settle down and we get a good run going I think Coloccini will begin to show his class again.

  • 38 James!!!!! // Sep 22, 2008 at 4:28 PM

when does any one thats cost a canny bit luk even good for newcastle against man utd he was top class and thn as per they disintergrate, i.e boumsong was good at rangers, kluivert done nowt, and jus last season rozehnal rated in the top for defenders in the world wt a load of good he was

  • 39 CLINT FLICK // Sep 22, 2008 at 4:29 PM

    Yea well,
    we’ve had a back 1 lately.
Zog, Edgar at LB & Taylor haven’t even made another one between them recently.

  • 40 Ganiyu // Sep 22, 2008 at 4:33 PM

Bassong and colo should be tested cos they hardly make mistakes.taylor should play rb cos he has attacking ideas

  • 41 Heavy hitters // Sep 22, 2008 at 4:37 PM

Drop Taylor and play Bassong. Edgar has asked be loaned out 3 times but had to be retained for cover and then played out of position. Taylor is on big wages now and doesnt justify them, he will always cost us whether he plays CB or RB. On Sat if we had played Colo / Edgar at CB and Bassong LB with Taylor RB things may have been a bit more stable. I’d like to see Tayls go but no one wants him.

  • 42 JJ // Sep 22, 2008 at 4:37 PM

    51 times

I agree Taylor hasnt been in good form the last three games….
Just one question though…. WHO HAS????
I feel sorry for Taylor because he seems to be made the scapegoat for poor performances because he is the last line of defence in the outfield – therefore he gets the blame.
Coloccini has been just as bad if not worse, but he is new so he gets away with it.
Our full back pairing is good, they showed this against Man United the first game BUT they are covering for errors in front of them (MAINLY NICKY BUTT) and on either side (EDGAR AND NZOGBIA who is not a left back).

Nicky Butt is a huge weak link in our side. But at the moment we cant complain about anyone because they are te only fit players so we have to play them. GREAT JOB WISE.

When Beye is back we still desperately need a left back. (WHERE HAVE I HEARD THAT BEFORE).

With our best strengh side I’d go for:

    ————————Given—————————–

    Beye——-Taylor———–Coloccini——Enrique

    Jonas——-Guthrie——–Barton——–N’Zogbia

    —————Martins——–Owen———————

Subs: Harper, Nacho, Xisco, Bassong, Duff, Geremi, Lua Lua.

Note: No Ameobi, Viduka, Smith or Butt anywhere. Sell them and replace them with a fullback who can play both sides and a quality CM and winger with loads of pace.

    Manager of choice: Houllier
Why: he has the experience in the league and although not under Liverpool but under Lyon he played superb attacking (on the deck) football.

  • 43 CLINT FLICK // Sep 22, 2008 at 4:38 PM

& Taylor likes to lean back when he passes, so he may well work as a RB getting the ball into the box.

  • 44 Obafan // Sep 22, 2008 at 4:39 PM

I would not be disappointed if he wanted to leave, he is overrated and he can make mistakes without being left out of the squad.

  • 45 JJ // Sep 22, 2008 at 4:41 PM

Second manager of choice would be Fatih. If he can get the same fighting spirit in our side that he did with the Turks in Euro them I’d be delighted.

  • 46 beyethegreat // Sep 22, 2008 at 4:41 PM

i would be extremely dissapointed to see him leave as he is young and will get better the mistakes he is making now are the ones you expect from defenders his age

  • 47 JJ // Sep 22, 2008 at 4:45 PM

By the way, we used to have a lad here at the club called Aaron Hughes who was never class, but he did a great job whether he played at left back, right back or centre back.
Am I the only one who reckons he is sorely missed in times of injury?
We need to find another Aaron Hughes.

  • 55 Whumpie // Sep 22, 2008 at 4:58 PM

I like Taylor’s attitude most of the time, but he really doesn’t seem to be learning as fast as he should. How many more penalties from handballs?

BUT anyone who thinks the club’s current state doesn’t have a huge impact on the players is fooling themselves. At this level the difference between winning and losing is a state of mind.

If we, as external observers, are having trouble concentrating on work (as I am) because of it, imagine what it does to someone who actually works within the organisation at that level?

  • 56 JJ // Sep 22, 2008 at 4:58 PM

Kenny, I’ll give you a chance this time. But the amount of times I’ve seen “watch this space” Im not brimming with confidence.
Especially with official comment that he is not interested.

  • 57 Ben K // Sep 22, 2008 at 5:00 PM

JJ I really like that midfield you set up, and I couldn’t agree more about Butt. However, Bassong deserves a place before Enrique and Taylor IMO. In fact, I would slot Cacapa in before Taylor and throw Bassong in at LB. Him and N’Zogbia work real well together.

The other issue is Viduka. While he may be slow he does score goals when he starts. He allows the team to keep possession and finds players in good positions.

  • 59 JJ // Sep 22, 2008 at 5:01 PM

    Whumpie,

You can only learn from playing with someone better than you.
Even though Taylor is far from World Class, who was he meant to learn from the last two years?
    Bramble? Boumsong? Pure kid…
Hopefully the team will sort itself out and he can learn from a confident Colo…

  • 60 simon376 // Sep 22, 2008 at 5:01 PM

Kenny I agree with JJ as it seems to have gone so quiet with us and more for Everton, love you to be right though as we need somebody and quick. Do you have anyway you can back it up?

  • 61 JJ // Sep 22, 2008 at 5:03 PM

Ben K, yes on current form I think Bassong deserves the nod. But in the centre. Not left back. The problem is we have no left back.

    * Hope the news is good Beye the great!!!!

  • 66 JJ // Sep 22, 2008 at 5:09 PM

Oh god, such mixed feelings here.

Nigerian businessman bid looks very serious and “their number one priority is to bring Kevin Keegan back as manager!”

    Direct quotes!

I love KK but things could go terribly wrong.

The third coming does seem a bit of a joke, but if he returns I will back him 100%…

Tom Toon and Spyro, will be crying with anguish. Dont worry Tom, I have your fears but I still just have to support him. There is just something about him. And he never really had full run of the club.

Would it really be classed as a third coming as he’s only been away a couple of games? It would be more like him back after a holiday or being on the sick.

Lets remember if it happens and its a big IF, I doubt we would be about to ge a new owner if he hadn’t had his princples and gone. We have so much to thank him for, saving us from relegation last season, giving us all a lift and getting the players out of a rut and going for it again. If all these player stories are true, imagine how they would play if he came back, be like a new team.

It amazes me that WE all know what our best line-up is yet manager after manager we get the same BS team sheets.

Charlie is not a full-back but he is one hell of a left winger!

Butt passed his sell-by-date a long time ago (on loan to B’ham??)

Duff…hahahaha, Head-down greedy little player who couldn’t beat championship level defenders.

Probably explains why Edgar keeps getting games. He must look amazing at practice shutting down the great Damien Duff all day, ffs!

Oba to wreck havoc on those silly Spuds! (What was that Nando? … all gone a bit quiet lately!)

I admire KK for standing up and being a “No, No, to that Llambias and Wise” man rather than be a toothless yes man. Bring him back under new ownership asap. What is the difference between KK walking away and fans urging we walk away from a game before it starts? None. Both were felt to be principled protests. Nothing will happen until Ashley sells up. Had a terrible shock today. Found out that I had a London born great-great aunt who married a man called Wise from the west end of London and Chelsea area. Please, no flowers by request!

Took you a while to do your research but I dont know what you are arguing mate.
I already stated that Sheperd was crap, what my main comment was that Football wise he backed his manager most times. And we were making record turnovers because we were being fed by a Suger Daddy for those days Sir John Hall.
He ploughed millions into the club (we were the Chelsea of those days except we where owned by locals) and we had KK in charge.
As I stated I dont like Sheperd and I said its hard to believe anyone could do worse but Ashley has.
You showed me Sheperds 10 year reign which included 3 champions leagues and 4 eufa cup challenges (two cup finals and two semi finals).
Stadium worth 450Mil pounds (third most impressive in the land).

Let me show you Ashleys reign of one year:

Club in biggest shambles its ever been in…
    NO MANAGER.
    NO EUROPE.
    NO COACHING STAFF.
    NO MONEY SPENT.
    SMALLEST SQUAD IN THE LEAGUE.
FANS THAT HATE HIM MORE THAN SHEPERD THEY HAVE EVEN THREATENED TO BOYCOTT AND RIPPED UP SEASON TICKETS.

My comment was that Sheperd (as bad as he was) was still better than Ashley for the club.

But continue your fruitless arguement please…

Do the press check this site out? I hope so because now The Sun, The Mail, and the NOWT now know what a pile of shite I know they are! Does the London Mafia tune in too? No wonder Dennis Wise looks so pasty faced and bog eyed.

  • 101 beyethegreat // Sep 22, 2008 at 5:45 PM

I registered with these press rags to add my comments. None of my blogs commenting on the anti-NUFC garbage they print have ever been published. Isn’t democracy marvellous?

  • 107 Ganiyu // Sep 22, 2008 at 5:56 PM

The nigerian lad would release alot of transfer fee and bring his limits to Nufc.one thing i know is that Shay oba and owen would not leave the club with them in charge

    Spyro // Sep 22, 2008 at 15:32

“MA is really beginning to piss me off now. This nonsense talk of a 400million price on our club is ridiculous. Is he that greedy? We are not worth a penny over 250-300million in our current state and it is time for him to shut up and sell now. He is just hurting the club by dragging this on”

  • 115 Toon Chicken // Sep 22, 2008 at 6:05 PM

JJ – dunno how long you’ve been a supporter of the Toon for but we are far from in the biggest shambles we have ever been in. Things are bad – no doubt, but they can be easily fixed.

The squad is not as small as everyone thinks – we have 11 midfielders and 6 strikers. We are short on world class stars but Ashley was more concerned with developing that kind of talent, not trying to buy success like Shepherd.

    The club’s league positions during Shepherd’s don’t lie…

    13th, 13th, 11th, 11th, 4th, 3rd, 5th, 14th, 7th and 13th.

The only time we started to enjoy the success we had come to expect was when Bobby was in charge – so what did the fat pig do – sack him.

If Ashley had not bought the club the credit crunch would have hit NUFC like the iceberg in titanic and you can bet the fat greedy pig would have done everything in his power to make sure he didn’t go down with it.

    You pasted a link Beye?

  • 117 beyethegreat // Sep 22, 2008 at 6:10 PM

i know thank you for your help clint

  • 118 JJ // Sep 22, 2008 at 6:11 PM

    Toon Chicken

I dont think Sheperd wanted to sack Robson.
And on the field his biggest mistake was the appointment of Souness.
Dalglish, Gullet and Allardyce all had decent records but they werent right for the toon.
Im not defending him, he was a fat useless prick.
    But so is Ashley.
Depth having 6 strikers is part of my reasoning…
Why do we have 6 strikers and one left back, one right back…
Ashley’s era has been a disaster since Mort left.
Anyway, lets just hope he sell to someone that has brains and passion for the club.

@ED Wudnt be suprised if a load of managers have rejected us and if players do want to leave given the abuse and negative light shed on our club by YOU and many posters on this blog. If there had been a little more reason after the fiasco of Keegan walking the situation would not have been so dire. Sadly the lack of foresight will cost us BADLY . . Makes me angry all overagain at the way people behaved – bedsheets with Cockney mafia out – what bloody joke

  • 132 TOONPIPES // Sep 22, 2008 at 7:59 PM

Ye cannit call reports daft when you have had such a one-eyed and biased view throughout – what is daft about these reports – I’d say they are quite possibly 100% true. What is daft is trying to arrange petitions + tshirts + chat if the georide fans buying the club – GIVE ME BREAK !! GEEEEZUS

  • 133 AltaBatalJoneN // Sep 22, 2008 at 8:34 PM

Off course Taylor is going to be a ticking bomb in our defence.. He was learning his trade from Bramle and Boumsong!!! :)

  • 134 Heavy hitters // Sep 22, 2008 at 9:40 PM

Talyor just doesnt have what it takes to be a CB, he could be an ok RB perhaps. We cannot keep banging on about why he hasnt developed into the player we thought he would, he hasnt and thats that. Has any big clubs ever even inquired about him? All this “he’s a Geordie ” is getting a bit boring now. I was a big fan of his but he hasnt developed and I would like to see him either on the bench or sold. Bassong is streets ahead of him. LB is our problem so ideally my back four would be:

Beye Colo Cacapa or Edgar Bassong

Taylor on the bench as cover for Beye or either CB’s.

  • 135 brutooooon // Sep 23, 2008 at 12:48 AM

Taylor, in term of performances lets look at CBs which started playing the same time like him.

    lescott
    richards
    djourou

they all are better than steven taylor !

  • 136 JJ // Sep 23, 2008 at 11:01 AM

    brutoooon

Lescott – had Yobo to partner and learn from
    Richards – had Dunn
Djourou – had Gallas and Toure

Again … who has Taylor has until now?

  • 137 m. // Sep 24, 2008 at 11:17 AM

Again … who has Taylor has until now?

he had Boumsong… he could learn what to avoid doing :D
