The Newcastle Journal are reporting today that Terry Venables met with Mike Ashley in London yesterday, and was offered the job as interim Newcastle United manager.

Terry has yet to accept the offer, but it is expected that he will accept the offer, because we understand he will be handsomely paid for stepping into the breach at Newcastle by owner Mike Ashley.
And of course it is worth it, not only to owner Ashley to steady the ship, but also to those who really matter, the club and the fans.
As we reported last night we expect it to be a temporary position until Ashley has found a buyer, willing to meet his asking price for the club.
But that will still give Venables enough time to prove he still has the magic, and can turn the club around, but most of all get the players competing again, and get them enthusiastic about their football again.
They looked as though their heads and hearts were not in the game last night against Tottenham, and in the end were a well beaten side, and again the defense let in a very sloppy goal, in fact the worst goal of the season so far, and a mistake from Coloccini of all people, with help from Steven Taylor.
It’s certainly necessary for Ashley to steady the ship until a new buyer is found for the club, and it will be a tough game on Saturday against Blackburn Rovers, so the sooner someone takes charge the better for everybody concerned.
We hope Terry steps up to this considerable challenge.

It was TAYLOR HIS FAULT, not Colocinni’s. I can’t understanbd the fact that Taylor is so overprotected by most on this blog. He is a very bad defender and it is very hard (for Colo) to play alongside such a central defender.
If Taylor starts on Saturday then I don’t understand a thing about football, cause everyone can see that his confidence is very low and that his skill is not high. Passion for a club is not the only thing which is necessary to become a good player.

Colo should have never played that ball to Taylor in the first place - it was a schoolboy error. Taylor should have still dealt with it though and, even though he probably shouldn’t have been in that position, he is still totally responsible for what happened after.

Anyone remember El Tel taking the reins down the road at Middlesbrough, he was only there for a month or so but when he took over they were at the bottom of the table and he kept them up!
We just need someone to motivate and instil some confidence into the players. Besides this will make the task slightly easier for whover the new manager may be, whenever that may be.
Put the past aside, sure he is a cockney wideboy etc, but at the moment we need points on the board and players who want to play. something needs to change asap before we get too far down the road to ruin.
Its a long season, and to be honest this is the best time of the season to be where we are, but by Christmas we need to be away from there, so picking up points now will have a huge impact there.
Any more news on the Nigerians, SSN reporting they are on their way to NUFC in the next 48 hours.

The pass was pointless but Taylor still failed to attack the ball which is what every player should be doing no matter what the position they play. We are suffering badly with injuries and lots of first team suspensions but I’d like to see Houghton do a Roeder and give some of the young kids a shot.
We must also ask the question why Houghton is so bad tactically??

To be fair, the problem here is not who the manager is, but how long they stay. If the ship is to be steadied, it needs to be steadied long term, not temporarily. I only see this as yet another manager coming and going at the club. It hardly smacks of stability, does it.
If the Nigerians are to buy the club and they are desperate for Keegan to be their manager, the best possible interim manager can only be Keegan himself, not my first choice, but it beats having another two names added to our list of managers over the last handful of years.
And everybody else is right Ed, Taylor was shocking last night and handed the spurs a goal.

Both Collocini and Taylor were at fault for the 2nd goal.
If taylor had played that ball to Collo I expect he would have dealt with it. Collo will know taylors limitations now. It wasnt a smart ball to play.

I agree with Richard. Realistically, we need someone who:
1. Knows how to deal with the likes of Llambias and Ashley. So a London wide boy, then.
2. Can remain detached enough to be happy with a temporary job. Someone who doesn’t need to be in love with a club to do a good job. (Ironic, ennit?)
3. Takes na sh*te from anyone and can slap people into shape. Like Taylor.
4. Has previous (no, not that sort) of turning around ships headed for cliffs.
Sure, I’d love to see KK back, but that’s not happening as long as the club’s in Ashley’s hands. El Tel has a list of bad news baggage as long as your arm, but I have a feeling that he’ll prove to be the first decent appointment Ashley’s made since Mort.

If I can sum last night up - shambles.
Whats done is done and thats it. We were not the only team in the prem to get beat last night. That should put some context into it.
I cant understand some people on here at times. Everyone calls out for something to happen re the managers situ and for ashley to sell the club - then complain about who is in line.
We have no say in the matter do we. We have to sit back and let events unroll out infront of us.
I want things sorted out as much as the next fan as I hate the way we are playing.
We gone from good attacking football to dull loosing football and we aint even played a TOP four team since KK left.
The mere thought of us doing a pompey and getting whipped 6 - 0 is a scary thought - but potential of a reality unless the defence sorts itself.
We need Beye, Spidermag, Guthrie, Barton and the Dukes back on the pitch. However Mark V gets slagged - he can keep a ball and pass on - even if he aint the fastest.

Oh I dont doubt that we need someone in long term and that is the only way to get long term stabilisation.
But you have just said yourself, alot of these potential buyers are looking to KK to return and be the boss so ideally the situation would be KK coming back now., but thats not going to happen.
UNLESS. Ashley accepts that he was in the wrong (again) and clears the air with KK, bringing him back with the assurances that he is in charge and Ashley will be gone before the next transfer window.

May not be such a bad idea. At the moment we need someone who knows how to manage (clearly not Chris Hughton), who is able to motivate players AND who’s prepared to come in on a short-term contract. Not a wide choice I suspect - and I’d rather have him as a stop-gap than make an inferior appointment and regret it for longer. Souness anybody?

I predicted yesterday that Venables was the likely short term coach. At least he has some experience and should bring some tactical nous to the team.
I only saw highlights of the game, and both of the goals were glaring defensive errors, Collocini seemed to have no idea where he should be for the first one and he and Taylor cock*d up for the second. On the plus side Oba looked good and we had enough chances to win the game had the shooting been a little better. Only just come onto the blog this morning so havn’t read any other comments yet but I suppose Nando has been gloating, bast*rd.

The ball from Coloccini didn’t help, but Taylor was clearly at fault for O’Haras goal. All he had to do was leather the damned ball as soon as it came anywhere near him, but he tried to be clever and shift it past O’Hara, and was made to look a fool for it.
He cost us the game. He should have his place taken from him, at least for a couple of games. He has done nothing to justify a constant place in the team, I’d rather see Cacapa play there right now, until Enrique comes back and Bassong can move back inside. These constant mistakes should cost Taylor his place in the side.

He’s 2 tropheys in 30 years. He hasn’t lasted in any of his previous jobs for more then 2 years.
He left both Pompey and Leeds at the bottom the league.
He’s been accused of bribery, deception, lying, manipulationf of accounts.
He wrote a collum in the paper every Sunday about the English team, while being assistant manager for England, in which he’s embarrased the English manager.
On the other hand..
He’s a good comunicator, he gets the players spirits up, he is generally liked by everyone who works with him.

Toon Greame - One of the problems we have is that we clearly do have a say in the matter. The fans called for Ashley to go, so he put the club up for sale. Only one of the farcical events that have taken place this year.
No decisions are being made on appointing a full time manager at the moment because Ashley probably feels that that should be the decision of the new owners. He got rid of Allerdyce (thank Christ) because he wanted his own man in charge. The same will be true of the new owners (probably).
I wonder, if he hadn’t been pushed into selling, would we have a manager at the moment. Would we still be in with a chance of winning the only piece of silverware we stood any chance of getting this season?

And here’s El Tel’s view on the roles of Manager/ coach and director of football…..
In an interview with BBC Sport on 18 September, Venables said the so-called foreign model of a head coach and director of football could work but only if the roles are clearly defined.
He said: “It works if everyone’s in agreement, if you’re in agreement with the situation as a manager then fine. But if you say no and then it’s implementing change that is when the problems come in.
“I think the parameters of a manager’s job have got to be clearly defined.”
And this is where Ashely must have failed:
1 - If the roles had been defined, understood and agreed ther would not have been a problem - providing the personalities were compatable.
2 - If the roles and parameters had been defined and agreed and then one of the parties undermined the other - then action should have been taken to stop it!
So, where should responsibility lie for the current debacle?
Was action taken soon enough?
Were those repsonsible dealt with effectively?

Typical choice for a club in our situation. An Englishman, no contract. Been around for ages and a known name by players and fans. He is probarly one of the few managers that are willing to take the assignment for a few weeks.
That is not saying I like him or the football he stands for. I rather think he’s totally useless.
But still I understand their choice.

The RTE (Irish chanel) panel, that consists of Bill (host) Eamon Dunphy, John Giles and Souness, discussing Venables, Dunphy then lets us know the facts about Venables, his charcater, track record, rap sheet..etc.
It reveals that Venables record as coach has been one big failure after another.
This was when Venables was favorite for the Irish job..this panel is so straight talking, honest and unbiased, and they are that influential that after this analysis of Venables he was no longer fav and Trapatoni ended up getting the job.

The RTE lads, 90% of the time are unbiased and honest and speak their mind-unlike the BBC, Sky etc..
Allways honest though, they always state their honest opinion, whether it’s right or wrong it’s their honest opinion.
It could go from absolutley and rightly so, taring Ronaldo apart piece by piece, calling him a modern day brat with no personality and saying that Ronaldo’s preformance was a disgrace to football, a disgrace of petulance, temperment, throwing himself on the ground..etc..a disgrace to professional footbal, calling him a cod. Not too surprised with the 2 goals we conceded. Colo played like Rio Ferdinand when he was at Deportivo, but at Newcastle, he looks like another Taylor in all honesty, probably just better on the ball.
I hope the problem is the pace of the league, and that he will adapt to it sooner rather than later.

Did I watch a different game? Colo was left marking 2 men, one being Taylor’s, and had no one attacking from behind him defensively.
On the 2nd goal the pass was a bit short, but Taylor just stood there startled and watched it roll up to him for crying out loud, and then tried some very strange move when he should have just hoofed it one - man and all..
Give Colo time, he’s adjusting to the physical side really well and just needs to iron a couple of things out. Taylor on the other hand - It’s just a shame that his talent doesn’t match his ego, as we’d never let a goal in, ever..

I think we should give Colo a wee bit of a break, he’s still new to the prem and the game stle that comes along with it. And I don’t think his English is that great either..
Taylor however is another thing. Just when you think he’s rounded a corner he goes and does something like that. We’re yet to see if he’s any serious potential.

Even El tel who will travel anywhere for a bit of cash doesn’t want us! If MA really thought anything about this club he should be prepared to offer at least a couple of months salary to an interim manager. If we get sold next week - so be it - it’s hardly going to break the bank paying any interim mgr off. Without someone steadying the ship I hate to think how much further we could sink
