The injury situation at Newcastle United is due to improve with 3 players due to return to training on 6th October.
Jonas Gutierrez - returns to training this Monday
Jonas Guttierez is the only senior player due to return to training on 6th October, but also youngsters Kazenga LuaLua and Andrew Carroll are due to return to training on the same day.
This is according to the official Premier League injury list kept at Physioroom.com
Newcastle and Sunderland have the most injuries and are top of that particular league with 7 total injuries each. Youngsters LuaLua and Carroll are good enough right now to make the bench, and are two of our brightest youngsters.
Here’s the official injury list:
Player Injury Return Date
Martins Cartilage Knee Injury 6th Nov 08
Smith Achilles Tendinopathy Dec 08
Gutierrez Shoulder Injury 6th Oct 08
LuaLua Sprained Ankle 6th Oct 08
Carroll Ankle/Foot Injury 6th Oct 08
Ngo Baheng ACL Knee Injury Jan 09
M Viduka Achilles Tendinopathy 25th Oct 08
Smith and Baheng are long term injuries, and it may even be that Alan Smith has already played his last game for Newcastle, because he is likely to be sold in January, as long as we can get a suitable replacement in his place.
Mark Viduka, who turns 33 on October 9th, is not due back on 25th October, but don’t hold your breath, the 32 year-old has been out since May and when October 25th gets closer, watch for that date to be put back.
Both Mark and Claudio Cacapa have 2 year contracts at Newcastle, with an option for a third year, but we’d be surprised if the club took up their options. Cacapa isn’t good enough and Mark isn’t playing enough, and that’s unlikely to improve with age.
But it will be great to at least get Gutierrez back for the next game after Everton this Sunday, which is a Monday night game against Manchester City on October 18th, KO 8:00 pm at St. James’ Park.
That will give Joe Kinnear plenty of time to get the lads ready, and we can win that game.
We also should know who the new owners are by then too, and maybe who the new permanent manager will be.
Comments welcome.

having guttierez will help. maybe carrol can get some touches too with everyone but xisco and owen out. if ameobi get more playing time then carrol i will be vexed man
2 Tom_Toon // Sep 29, 2008 at 18:52
Carroll looks poor and looked very poor with a shocking attitude at Preston.
Ed, Cacapa is good enough, he is better than Taylor.
I also hope they take up the extra year option on Viduka too.

7 KK FOREVER (Ross) // Sep 29, 2008 at 19:07
Cant wait for jonas to return. He looked our biggest threat against quality opposition such as man u etc, and i still think even in our time of complete turmoil, he’d still be a bright spark and create something for us. he can also cross the ball, something we’re lacking terribly.
tom toon-agree regarding viduka. I still think he’s a touch of class, great holding the ball up with his back to goal and dangerous when iven the chance to shoot. Shame about his fitness because i’d keep him for as long as possible.
8 bri // Sep 29, 2008 at 19:08
this is a boost added to the return of guthrie after serving the last game of his ban against b burn and the return of beye and enrique may be a result at everton is not beyond us. Also barton will be back soon too some people may not want barton back but he is a better option than butt IMO

Yeah, let’s extend Viduka’s contract Tom Toon, he’s been exceptional for us all season.
Keeping Viduka is like flogging a dead horse, we’re never going to get anything out of him.
12 Turkish magpie // Sep 29, 2008 at 19:20
viduka can really play well his experience is vital at the moment
13 Chris H // Sep 29, 2008 at 19:24
Anyway Ed, THIS Monday is today, NEXT Monday is 6th October!
14 Turkish magpie // Sep 29, 2008 at 19:26
we need young players that turn into quality, instead of buying players that have nearly had it aka-viduka but with his experience he can turn younger players aka- carrol, lualua into class and soon we wont need to buy cover for positions we’ll already have it
15 Chris H // Sep 29, 2008 at 19:26
Well if Viduka is vital at the moment Turkish Mag, we’re up the creek mate, considering he isn’t due back until 25th October.

barton and guthrie would be mint but i think we should play 433 when viduka is back so i wouldn’t know who to drop barton or guthrie.

arnietoon- LUIS enrique? i f*kin wish we had luis enrique
23 TB // Sep 29, 2008 at 19:47
in a 4-3-3 with viduka and martins healthy, i would probably sit Nzogbia rather than sitting Barton or Guthrie.
Guthrie - Barton - Jonas
I’d put Nzog in for barton after 70 minutes and shift guthrie into the middle. Barton hasn’t played much lately, so I would think a full 90 wold be asking alot of him.. especially the way he plays with such energy.
24 Patrick (Pizzicato) // Sep 29, 2008 at 19:50
The ressurected Luis Enrique is good… um hum… (dreaming)
The Bull-ish Jose Enrique is better!
25 TB // Sep 29, 2008 at 19:53
yet, if a team can be exposed with pace out wide, our best lineup would be a 4-4-2 with a midfield of:
Jonas - Guthrie - Barton - Nzogbia
with Owen and Martins up top.
Viduka replacing Martins after the hour mark. That would help Viduka’s lack of athleticism by putting him in against a tired back four… and Owen thrives off of taking great angles against a tired defense that starts making mental lapses. Viduka’s target skills would help Owen late in the game.
26 Tom_Toon // Sep 29, 2008 at 19:58
TB - I think it is the opposite. You want Viduka starting as he will bully and ire out the defenders, then bring Martins on to tire them even more and score.
27 Leo // Sep 29, 2008 at 19:58
whats wrong with nacho gonzalez??????
28 Turkish magpie // Sep 29, 2008 at 19:58
yes but maybe if we start viduka and see if he can grab an early goal and when his energy runs out bring on martins whos energy will really hurt the tired back 4

Tom Toon and Turkish - Good points, and well taken. In fact, I may have underestimated the physical toll a defense can take by marking Viduka for an hour or so.
Curious though, would Martins be able to deal with coming off the bench. He strikes me as a type that gives his all, but whines if he doesn’t get to play. I don’t see Viduka having a problem coming off the bench.
35 Alex // Sep 29, 2008 at 20:36
With Beye Jonas Guthrie back the game after Everton then we will definatly be heading towards midtable . Anybody know how long it will be before Enrique & Nacho will be fit ?
36 Tom_Toon // Sep 29, 2008 at 20:40
Enrique and Beye are fit for Everton and Guthrie is back, not sure if Jonas is though.
37 Turkish magpie // Sep 29, 2008 at 20:43
tb - i agree you dont want to lose martins and you fear he will leave if he doesnt get played but viduka starting is better strategically
barton and viduka return on the same day so could completely change the line up if king kev is there
i think we should sign rory du lap as his throws would be very useful if stoke go down

There is no way i would take up the options on Viduka at 70000 a week. No its time to move on and get someone else.-same with Cacapa and Butt.
Smith is hardly going to be sold if he is injured so i hope he gets fit by January.
Shola has had his day are Ipswich still interested.
Gonzalez-doubt we will see much of him, bet he doesnt want to be here.
42 Toon Graeme // Sep 29, 2008 at 21:02
I think Xisco needs to grow some balls and stop backing out of tackles and confrontation.
If he does then we will have a good one there - he just needs time to adjust and hes only played a few matches for us
Nowt to do with injuries but hey.

When we get Jonas and Guthrie back we’ll be much more flexible in midfield. Same with Barton.
But our real problem is full back. Without Beye we really struggle. Same with strikers…Owen on his own or wih Xisco won’t be enough. While he’s got a contract with us we need to see Viduka at least try to get fit!

I do hope Jonas can come back soon and bring some life and positivity back to the team.
Different subject, but does anyone else agree with me that Michael Owen is a rubbish captain when the chips are down? A very good player and definitely to be kept if we can keep him, but really not a leader for the Toon if you ask me.

Seven offers on the table for Newcastle
30 September, 2008
Seymour Pierce are currently reviewing seven offers from non-British investors for the takeover of English Newcastle Untied, recently put up for sale by current owner Mike Ashley.
Seymour Pierce will be reviewing offers this week, according to the Telegraph, and special attention to Nigerian businessmen, who put in an offer first. Ashley is looking for at least GBP 350 million for the club.
Sir John Hall, former chairman of Newcastle told the Telegraph that he sold the club to Ashley with the understanding that there was a long-term vision. Hall now feels sad for the club, and feels that the game is falling out of British ownership because clubs are in the market for owners with “mega-money.”
81 Tom_Toon // Sep 30, 2008 at 0:58
Topal is a tall DM, 22, who plays for Galatasary and Turkey. Got a very good long shot and passing range, is strong and can break down play well.

Matthew Tom, disagree about Owen. I think his work rate has been good and regarding leadership of the team, you would not find anyoone out there at the moment who could overcome the rot that has set into the team let alone the club.
He has impressed me as much as anything as he is still prepared to come out and talk to the media. I dont see many other people from NUFC doing that.
As for Joe Kinnear, total waste, no idea who the players are or how they perform. It will take him the 6 games to get to know their names!
Ashleys mates strike again !
102 jules // Sep 30, 2008 at 8:14
Does anyone find it a little ironic that a lot of contempt was aimed at Ashley and crew because they were from London (and not local), now it seems likely that we wont even have a British owner let alone Geordie, how does everyone feel about that? Surely this will make them even more removed, or does the need for someone with megabucks outweigh this ?
