The injury situation at Newcastle United is due to improve with 3 players due to return to training on 6th October.
Jonas Gutierrez – returns to training this Monday
Jonas Guttierez is the only senior player due to return to training on 6th October, but also youngsters Kazenga LuaLua and Andrew Carroll are due to return to training on the same day.
This is according to the official Premier League injury list kept at Physioroom.com
Newcastle and Sunderland have the most injuries and are top of that particular league with 7 total injuries each. Youngsters LuaLua and Carroll are good enough right now to make the bench, and are two of our brightest youngsters.
Here’s the official injury list:
Player Injury Return Date
Martins Cartilage Knee Injury 6th Nov 08
Smith Achilles Tendinopathy Dec 08
Gutierrez Shoulder Injury 6th Oct 08
LuaLua Sprained Ankle 6th Oct 08
Carroll Ankle/Foot Injury 6th Oct 08
Ngo Baheng ACL Knee Injury Jan 09
M Viduka Achilles Tendinopathy 25th Oct 08
Smith and Baheng are long term injuries, and it may even be that Alan Smith has already played his last game for Newcastle, because he is likely to be sold in January, as long as we can get a suitable replacement in his place.
Mark Viduka, who turns 33 on October 9th, is not due back on 25th October, but don’t hold your breath, the 32 year-old has been out since May and when October 25th gets closer, watch for that date to be put back.
Both Mark and Claudio Cacapa have 2 year contracts at Newcastle, with an option for a third year, but we’d be surprised if the club took up their options. Cacapa isn’t good enough and Mark isn’t playing enough, and that’s unlikely to improve with age.
But it will be great to at least get Gutierrez back for the next game after Everton this Sunday, which is a Monday night game against Manchester City on October 18th, KO 8:00 pm at St. James’ Park.
That will give Joe Kinnear plenty of time to get the lads ready, and we can win that game.
We also should know who the new owners are by then too, and maybe who the new permanent manager will be.
Comments welcome.

Comment #2Carroll looks poor and looked very poor with a shocking attitude at Preston.
Ed, Cacapa is good enough, he is better than Taylor.
I also hope they take up the extra year option on Viduka too.

Comment #7Cant wait for jonas to return. He looked our biggest threat against quality opposition such as man u etc, and i still think even in our time of complete turmoil, he’d still be a bright spark and create something for us. he can also cross the ball, something we’re lacking terribly.
tom toon-agree regarding viduka. I still think he’s a touch of class, great holding the ball up with his back to goal and dangerous when iven the chance to shoot. Shame about his fitness because i’d keep him for as long as possible.

Comment #8this is a boost added to the return of guthrie after serving the last game of his ban against b burn and the return of beye and enrique may be a result at everton is not beyond us. Also barton will be back soon too some people may not want barton back but he is a better option than butt IMO

Comment #11Yeah, let’s extend Viduka’s contract Tom Toon, he’s been exceptional for us all season.
Keeping Viduka is like flogging a dead horse, we’re never going to get anything out of him.

Comment #14we need young players that turn into quality, instead of buying players that have nearly had it aka-viduka but with his experience he can turn younger players aka- carrol, lualua into class and soon we wont need to buy cover for positions we’ll already have it

Comment #15Well if Viduka is vital at the moment Turkish Mag, we’re up the creek mate, considering he isn’t due back until 25th October.

Comment #23in a 4-3-3 with viduka and martins healthy, i would probably sit Nzogbia rather than sitting Barton or Guthrie.
Guthrie – Barton – Jonas
I’d put Nzog in for barton after 70 minutes and shift guthrie into the middle. Barton hasn’t played much lately, so I would think a full 90 wold be asking alot of him.. especially the way he plays with such energy.

Comment #25yet, if a team can be exposed with pace out wide, our best lineup would be a 4-4-2 with a midfield of:
Jonas – Guthrie – Barton – Nzogbia
with Owen and Martins up top.
Viduka replacing Martins after the hour mark. That would help Viduka’s lack of athleticism by putting him in against a tired back four… and Owen thrives off of taking great angles against a tired defense that starts making mental lapses. Viduka’s target skills would help Owen late in the game.

Comment #26TB – I think it is the opposite. You want Viduka starting as he will bully and ire out the defenders, then bring Martins on to tire them even more and score.

Comment #34Tom Toon and Turkish – Good points, and well taken. In fact, I may have underestimated the physical toll a defense can take by marking Viduka for an hour or so.
Curious though, would Martins be able to deal with coming off the bench. He strikes me as a type that gives his all, but whines if he doesn’t get to play. I don’t see Viduka having a problem coming off the bench.

Comment #37tb – i agree you dont want to lose martins and you fear he will leave if he doesnt get played but viduka starting is better strategically
barton and viduka return on the same day so could completely change the line up if king kev is there
i think we should sign rory du lap as his throws would be very useful if stoke go down
