South Africans Bid £300M For Newcastle United

October 2nd, 2008 by Ed Harrison · 347 Comments

The BBC is reporting that it understand a South African consortium has made a bid in the region of £300M to buy Newcastle.

If that is true, and with the positive reaction to the group by Newcastle fans, that would presumably be an acceptable offer to Mike Ashley. It gives him £55M profit on his investment of £245M, which is just over 22%.

The South African group of five businessmen are also reported to be keen to bring back Kevin Keegan as manager, and the Evening Chronicle reported last night they would offer Keegan a 5% (5% - 10% was what the Chronicle actually reported) stake in the club.

If the deal goes through at £300M that’s £15M for Kevin – and twice that much if he is offered 10% of the club. Not too bad at all for what essentially is a signing-on fee. And if they are willing to give Kevin that personally, you’ve got to believe they will fund him big time in the transfer market.

As we reported this morning interim boss Joe Kinnear revealed today that Derek Llambias told him as many as eight consortiums had been in talks with owner Mike Ashley about buying the famously supported Newcastle United club.

The South African group must now be considered the front-runners and could be set to finalize a deal in weeks. The expectation is that some group will buy Newcastle before the end of October.

This has to be good news for both the club and the Newcastle fans, as this group seems to be very professional and want only the best for the faithful fans.

We would love this deal to go through – love it.

Comments welcome.

its common practice for people tobe offered stakes in a business as an incentive .
they may add that feature someday to football manager tom_toon and then you will be more comfrotable with it .

time to welcome back keegan !

Hadrian - Maybe, but ill never know because i wont ever and have never played it.

Ino they do give people stakes in a company but 5% of £300mil is far too much.

  • 17 Hadrian // Oct 2, 2008 at 18:43

Tom , that depends on the salary he’s offered if its to much or not .
personally i think its a great idea , give’s kev a decent say on the direction of the club without having to cause arguments with the board to get them to show abit ambiton , lets face it , when he’s left us its always been because the board never matched the fans ambitions , and i class keegan as a newcastle fan .

we will never get another manager why fights so hard for this club , its like having one of us in that position of power .

  • 18 Paul // Oct 2, 2008 at 18:44

A more specific figure of £280 million has been quoted, and they haven’t spoken to Keegan at all yet. Personally I can’t beleive that would be stupid enough to want the silver haired time bomb back, expecially not with 5% of the club! That would present complications anyway as Keegan is currently suing NUFC for the £8 million compo he believes he is owed for walking out.

  • 19 Tom_Toon // Oct 2, 2008 at 18:44

Tom Toon, when has Shearer ever said that he wanted the job?

  • 31 ToonEskimo // Oct 2, 2008 at 18:52

    Tom_Toon,
I’d heard that KK had been promised a £2million signing on fee with Ashley and that he would have walked as soon as Wise came on board but that the £2mil hadn’t been deposited in his account so he had to sit tight til he got his money, apparently he owed a fortune on his soccer circus and couldn’t afford to just quit.
Not the greatest idea really an englishman setting up a soccer school in Scotland….

A bit racist there Tom with the stereotyping mate.

I have reservations about KK coming back, but I do feel he could be a great ambassador with a great incentive and deterrent to finally finish what he starts this time round.

The most exciting part would be the introduction of Simon Clifford (www.icfds.com)

one of the best managers in club football….

but can you guarantee he won’t quit again…..
this time yes he was right to leave….

least said do you think the players would have the same respect as they did 9 months back, when he walked out he walked out on them also…

but its time to look forward and might be alan shearer would be a good option, but not till the club is stabalized

  • 42 Edd Case // Oct 2, 2008 at 19:06

I’d rather have Rijkaard too, to be honest.

Have these people got millions to spare for transfers though???

Personally, I couldn’t care less who owns the club as long as they are willing to splash out millions, and let’s face it, we could do with £150 million on transfers…

If they’ve got £150 million, purely for transfers, brilliant, if not, might aswell be Ashley.

  • 53 Jamie G // Oct 2, 2008 at 19:22

This south african deal actually seems one of the most potentially legitimate and worthwhile deals. Basically, Newcastle need a group of people to buy the club, install someone to run it for them e.g chris mort or a peter kenyon-type, and just sit back and not interfere.

I agree with Wenger. The manager is the most important man at the football club and should such be treated with respect. I think Keegan was treated badly but I think its in his nature to quit when under the kosh. Its for that reason I think the new owners should look elsewhere, because myself, and i think alot of fans, are just starting to wake up, take off their keegan blind folds and recognise this man’s credibility…a man who, while tasting success over a decade ago with the club, has seen a worse win record that ruud guillit and clearly, based on is exploits with man city and england, clearly doesn’t really understand what the game and the premiership has evolved into.

I think the new owners, (hopefully the South Africans as they seem to have the best portfolio) should be looking to bring in an experianced premiership manager who is respected and has had recent success…. david moyes and steve bruce come to mind.

  • 54 DanToon // Oct 2, 2008 at 19:27

If Newcastle are looking to bring in an experianced premiership manager i would bring back Keegan. Other than that i would go for Mancini, Rijkaard, Terim or Donadoni in that order.

the south africans do seem more organised than I thought from what has been wrote they are four billionairs so who do we want as manager for me KK why because he understands our club loves the club giving him a stake brilliant this also clears the problem of paying him compensation that will be handed over from ma

  • 58 joe // Oct 2, 2008 at 19:35

I don’t for one minute want Kinnear to remain as manager for too long but has anyone else seen how much reign he as been given with the press? All of a sudden we know everything that’s going on and what is likely to happen. Keegan wasn’t allowed to talk about anything. It’s amazing what Ashley wil do to avoid another dressing down by 50000 geordies! Hope this deal goes through and we get a manager who is right for us, Keegan or otherwise, and he gets backed in the transfer market.

  • 59 jules // Oct 2, 2008 at 19:36

Apparently Joe K is preparing a hit lis of players should he still be in charge come the January transfer window

    http://www.skysports.com/story/0,19528,11678_4236584,00.html

Does that mean we will see a return of players like Vinnie Jones, Dennis Wise ? who knows maybe even Jimmy Greaves!

  • 62 craig chisholm // Oct 2, 2008 at 19:40

i just dont understan why joe k is drawing up a list of his targets for january. what the hell is the point of that. ashley and his wakers had months to get people in during the summer and all they did was weaken us further buy not signing enough depth or quality. joe should shut is fat mouth, i am sick of his drivel already. he just needs to concentrate in getting us some points, nothing more.

  • 63 Frankieboy // Oct 2, 2008 at 19:40

I heard someone say that one of the guys in the South African consortium is worth 8billion, one worth 3.8 and one 4. Not bad if true!

By the way, tom_toon are you really a Newcastle fan??

Your comments that Alan Shearer is an ‘idiot’ and your continuous slaging off of Keegan suggest to me that you are not.

  • 65 Richard // Oct 2, 2008 at 19:43

How can anyone of sound mind want Luxemburgo in charge? The guy has failed outside Brazil and managed to screw up managing their national team. Managerial failure outside Brazil.

Terim - failed to cope at Milan and did an average job at Fiorentina with some great players at his disposal. Managed to do well with Gala - not really that hard when you consider there are really only 2.5 teams in Turkey.

Advocaat - don’t even start that one.

If you don’t want KK back - make some sensible suggestions…

  • 66 dan // Oct 2, 2008 at 19:49

If Keegan had not walked out you would have had Ashley and Wise picking the players for the rest of time, bring back Keegan he stood up for the players and the better of Newcastle United

I hope these South Africans have made a serious bid for our club. They seem to have great vision for the future. This Clifford bloke has been called a genius by some and he’ll be great for our youth set up.
Get Keegan in until at least the end of the season and give him a bit to spend in January and I can see us doing ok.

I agree, clearly Keegan walking out is not good for us in the short term. But I feel it will be in the long term.

If he had stayed, nobody would have had a clue what was going on (Wise picking the players) and it would have carried on with MA still in charge.

In my opinion a takeover is vital for the future of NUFC.

  • 74 Richard // Oct 2, 2008 at 19:56

You could list as many failures as they have had successes to be honest. Advocaat hasn’t done a good job anywhere until he got Zenit’s money. Failed with Holland and only won the league with Rangers when Celtic were abysmal. When O’Neill came - he lost it.

What i cant understand about Joe K is that according to the NUFC website he signed up for 6 games, now he says 8 could be more!
Joe K says Ashley is talking to 8 consortiums! This is the same guy that said last week Shearer and Keegan were coming to us!
It seems to me we go from one extreme to the other, we either can’t get people to talk to the media or people who can’t stop talking to them !

sick fo hearing people going on about how “if they haven’t got £150m available for transfers then it may aswell be ashley”. its totally ridiculous!! we don’t need anywhere near that amount to challenge for europe - i reckon £30m would get us challenging for europe if we had a good enough manager.

speaking of manager - my choice isn’t kk either because i feel he has too much power at the club, rightly or wrongly. we need a quality european coach/manager with new ideas and who can bring a totally fresh start, and my shortlist would include:
    1. hiddink (probably pipe-dream)
    2. van gaal
    3. rijkaard
    4. terim
    5. pellegrini (villarreal)
    6. mancini

  • 94 Tom_Toon // Oct 2, 2008 at 20:28

    Yes it does:

    - Quiter

    - Will be another uproar when he quits or gets the sack and fans will call for the others owners to go and this whole debarcle comes around again.

  • 97 ToonEskimo // Oct 2, 2008 at 20:32

I wouldn’t say winning a domestic cup makes you a great manager these days as most top clubs put reserve teams out these days as they have bigger fish to fry, difficult to say what qualities make a great manager, run club on a sound financial footing while getting results, winning regardless of cost? spotting superstars at an early age and flogging them for a huge profit? I doubt we’ll ever be lucky enough to have a truely great manager.
    A question to ponder…..
Who was the last Newcastle manager to leave to take up another job in management?
ie. head hunted or poached not sacked or quit….

We need a manager that understands the place, otherwise it wont work as well.

Think about it, since the PL began, we have only been the force we should be under 2 managers

    Keegan and Robson

They know the club better than any other European manager that has never even been to Newcastle.

Keegan is still the man for the job IMO

You do know that the uproar was about more than just Keegan quitting don’t you?

If Keegan had quit because he couldn’t be arsed anymore than I doubt very much that the fans would be calling for Ashley to sell.

Fact is he was undermined by the board, and most normal people can understand why he had to quit.

Judging by the vote on this site, the majority of fans want KK back as manager.

I must admit I had thought that we might move on completely with a new owner and a new manager.

I do, however, think that there’s an awful lot of detrimental nonsense spoke about KK.

I think the man would make a decent manager so long as he doesn’t walk out again, which would be my worry.

  • 122 Ado // Oct 2, 2008 at 20:51

Shearer an idiot? b*llocks! He is destined to be a top class manager. If you have ever been lucky enough to be in his company, he has an air about him that screams of top class premiership manager. Forget his appearances on MotD where he is hamstrung by what he can and can’t say, he is the real deal.

I would love him to be our manager, he understands the club, the fans, the expectation and the city. Newcastle is unique, and many a decent manager has failed because they didn’t understand it all.

I would put my faith in Big Al every time, he is one of those people that are born winners. He doesn’t need to serve an apprenticeship at a lowly club, get him in now whilst he still has the pull with top players. The man is top drawer and one of us.

KK is a Toon Legend but I wouldn’t want him back as a manager. Yes he started to coach out the negative and long ball game BF Sam had instilled but I don’t think he could attract the top players or has the contacts any more.

My choice would be the Sven the Swedish Snake. He has a proven track record in Club and International football. He has won titles, cups and European competitions. Plays OK football, really good with the right players. He would also convince Owen to stay at the club.

Just one bad thing. I’m sure he talked about Shola playing for England!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Suppose you can’t get everything right

You are clearly too young and too full of a belief that if it wasn’t conceived since the X-Factor came on TV it’s not worth a candle. Keegan doesn’t like young palyers - nonsense! Watson and Clark prospered under him. Quitter m- well we’ve knocked that on the head so many tomes but you don’t recognise principle and intergrity when you see it, probably bacause all you have known is Sky-inspired Premiership upitselfness. There is a better way based on class football, honourable people and excitement. Keegan knows a class palyer when he sees one, believe me. Your fetish for a foreign manager or Bruce or Moyes (and what have they won, exactly?) is mind-bogglingly inane. But cheer up - your education will be complete soon!

NUFC has quite a track record of destroying the reputations of managers so why would Hiddink, Van Gaal, Rijkaard etc who all have huge pedigree risk coming to manage us. If we were in the top half of the league we would still have difficult job persuading the likes of those to come never mind being currently in a relegation scrap.

“I have told Nigeria I’ve made my decision and am going to stick to it. Hopefully next season I can play enough for Newcastle United to impress him (Eriksson).”

    Sven Goran Eriksson said:

“Shola Ameobi and Jermain Defoe have a real chance of getting into our squad. They are both fine young players and great prospects.”

    IMO
giving keegan a stake of the club.. is a winner for everyone..
that stakeholding will be tied into a agreement of finishing whateve lenth contract he signs.. and no doubt once that tenure is finished, he will go upstairs and take a excecutive position.

No one can doubt that he only wants the best for nufc.. and operating the club as manager and then a continued influence can only be a good thing.

It also speaks volumes about the prospective owners, who seem more than willing to establish some stability into the club.. target a long term plan rather than short term success

Well BNT they obviously don’t watch the useless tw@t week in week out like me.

If your definition of legend is
    “diving in”
“passing the ball 2 yards to a teammate and then telling him where to pass it”
    “Losing your man”
    “Giving away goals”
“Dancing in a slightly homo erotic manner with a Senagalese team mate”
Oh yeah, “clapping the crowd” and “being a sort of Geordie”

Then he is a proper hero mate….

John youve hit the nail of the head!
Tom, you seem to have lost a lot of credibility on here mate, I always used to find some of your posts interesting yet you’ve changed and became more kinda ‘agressive’.

    FFS TOM

have some respect. all very wealthy men who have made a successful career out of football at the top level.

they didn’t get there and stay there by knowing nothing.. or being ‘complete idiots’

You make yourself look more childish, and more ignorant on every post.
you have been found out,. and lost all credability.

now get to bed it’s a school night

BNT - most, if not all of those have said similar things about Shola Ameobi.

Emile Heskey has been praised by ex-pro’s/pundits/managers throughout his career.

I like Taylor and really hope he comes good. He has been absolute gash of late though and needs to seriously buck his ideas up. I think a couple of weeks out of the first team would do him good. He believes too much of his own hype I feel.

  • 203 Nick C // Oct 2, 2008 at 21:57

    Bore off, BNT.

  • 204 murvar // Oct 2, 2008 at 21:59

BNT - keep it going, mate! Taylor is one of our great hopes for the future and he is still learning (and there’s nothing wrong with that - the best players always want to learn more) and he may be going through a bad patch but that happens - and good players do not become bad players overnight. He will come out of it with our support - and when he is played in his proper position and plays regularlyy alongside Colo who is a class act. Get off Tayl’s back! Encourage him and the others!

    Nick c

    I watch him every week..

Again he is england u21 captain
    and will be nufc captain

he’s had a couple of poor games.. but lets be honest.. who is playing well at the moment?
there is enough talent there for him to be starting centre half for last three seasons.. he makes the odd mistake. he’s 22.

  • 206 Nick C // Oct 2, 2008 at 22:03

I’m sorry. I would like him to be good, but sometimes u just have to face facts. 22 is not a total bairn. He has never trained on.

    Face it.

  • 207 Tom_Toon // Oct 2, 2008 at 22:04

Taylor has been crap for 2 years.

If he is the future for of us we may aswell go into administration.

  • 208 Toon_Phil // Oct 2, 2008 at 22:04

All the signs look good, i trust them more than the nigerians, they seem to have more money, and as said here if they are willing to give KK that kind of money straight away just to get him back, imagine what our transfer budgets could be.

Perhaps the ‘bottomless pits’ of cash we were supposed to get under Ashley,

Lets have a real go in the summer for top players like man city did and see what next season has to offer, this season is yet again another re-building season but with keegan, martins and gutierrez back with south africans leadin us it could be a better middle and end to our season.

I just wish it would happen before the derby :(

Cant see us beatin the mackems but heres hopin!

whoever comes in and whoever manages the club will need more than 75 million to turn this team around. its rubbish. we have a little bit of quality and nothing else. given, quality, beye, quality, side show bob, quality, owen, quality, martins, quality that is it. the rest are just average premier league players, so it is going to take a hell of a lot more than 75m, more like 150 mill. This is how crap we are, spuds, bottom of the league walked all over us f
