Joe Kinnear had a tirade yesterday morning in complaining vehemently, with some very blue language at the treatment he has been receiving from sports writers who cover Newcastle United.
Joe Kinnear - filthy worded tirade against National Press
Let’s just saying the way Joe started the press conference was as follows:
Kinnear: Which one is Simon Bird? - he is the Daily Mirror’s north-east football writer
Bird: Me.
Kinnear: You’re a c**t.
Bird: Thank you.
Then it got worse from there with Joe launching a filthy worded verbal attack against the National journalists and threatening never to speak to them again as he claimed in this last week they had continually tried to undermine him and the Newcastle United Club.
At one point Joe was so upset that he said he may even seek libel damages for some of their stories.
And this is after only 7 days since Kinnear was announced last Friday as Newcastle’s interim manager.
Only at Newcastle.
Often during the interview the Press officer said some of the following, hoping the press conference would be kept quiet and not reported outside that room:
Press officer: What has been said in here is off the record and doesn’t go outside. Let’s get on to football. Let’s have an agreement that everything said so far, if anyone has got their tapes on, it’s wiped off and we’re not discussing it.
Journalist: But that’s what Joe has said he thinks of us.
Press officer: I’m saying don’t push it. Let’s accept what’s been said and try and move on.
But of course the transcripts immediately appear in all the National press immediately after the conference, which will not help Joe, and really shows up Joe. But that also illustrates what these journalists are like.
One of the hardest things about the Newcastle manager is dealing with the press, because they will write lies about anything to get a story, we have learned a lot about this since we started this blog in April of last year.
But Joe just has to stop wasting energy on being upset about what these people write – because they’ll get even worse as his enemies, which they certainly are now.
Quite honestly this has embarrassed the club, and maybe Joe Kinnear should even issue a short apology and then not talk to them again, if it is going to result in this type of stuff, which we don’t want to hear again.
We’ve read the transcripts and listened to the press conference and to say this has embarrassed the club is an under-statement.
Joe has to get used very quickly to these National press people writing almost anything to sell their papers, and we had to think about whether the word “almost” was needed to be in this sentence.
Oh well, it’s happened now but this will help nobody, certainly not Joe nor the team, nor the club, which are the only important players in all of this.
In fact the only people it will help? You guessed it - the press - who will write sensational stories about this. But to release the transcript and audio is another stab in the back for Joe - that’s what they are like - let’s be truthful here.
Anything for a sensational story.
If Joe want to treat the press as enemies from now on - then that’s fine with us - but he should use this to motivate himself and the players to get back at the press with great results - because that’s all that really matters right now.
Comments welcome.

I thought this was absolutely classic. Not often managers bite back at the press with such force, brilliant stuff.
We need a tough-talking tough acting manager to lead the club through this turbulent period. Let’s hope Joe’s bite is as strong as his bark.

He’s is own man imo, whether he is right or wrong I don’t see it damaging me as a fan, afterall we know the papers print what they want anyway.
Only downside imo is that it’s helped sell more of the rags!
I’m sure that many people have wanted to say similar things to the press at some time but typical it’s NUFC that actually does. Never a dull day at NUFC.
One thing I heard him say was about his recepetion on Saturday (when he discussed talking with MA) and he said it didn’t go well!!! Wonder what he meant… by us fans, the players or the press? I thought we’d been ok with him but maybe I’m wrong.

A part of me is cheering him for saying what he said - we’ve had to put up with the prejudice of southern journalists for years, it’s time to sort them ou.

As a proverbial fence-sitter, I sympathise with him for letting loose but I also see that it makes him look as much like a tw*t as it does anything else. The key thing was timing, the timing of his rant (not necessarily the content) is what is most ill-advised. Joe professes to know how these guys work from his time in the game. I’m surprised he doesn’t know how to play them. This is more ammunition. If it is an attempt at creating ’seige mentality’ it’s flawed. Might seem like a noble gesture but we could do without having an us vs the world situation right now.
15 bowburnmag // Oct 3, 2008 at 12:39
But just for the craic - much as I don’t condone too much grief on other supporters, particularly if their plight is as a poor as our’s Spurs’, it is a relief to see it’s not just getting laughed at right now - http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-1067529/Theres-new-comedy-club-town–Tottenham-Toon-email-pranksters-strike.html?ITO=1490.

This is pure class. Anyone can see the genious behind this. The press will now be looking at and gunning for him and less on our players. Excellent way to take the focus off them and let them do thir talking on the pitch!!
20 YellowBelly // Oct 3, 2008 at 12:44
Maybe it was a clever deliberate tactic. Mourinho was a master at it and he knew the press had to write something about the club. So give them something meaning less but controversial and they will leave everything else alone.
21 Bosck // Oct 3, 2008 at 12:45
Personally i support Joe completely on this some one had to stand up and tell the press the truth.
So what he swore. Most people swear. The press make up lies every day especially about our club and some one had to have a go at them for this. At least on this case they are reporting the truth. Personally i couldnt care less if Joe Kinnear has no working relationship with the national press. he can talk to the fans through the local newspapers and the official site and then sad the garbage printing national press.

He has a go at Niall Hickman in the Express but to be honest Niall tends to write some very fair articles about Newcastle and the fans, and he was certainly very scathing towards Ashley for his treatment of Keegan. At the end of the day we can all use swear words, but surely he can get his point across in a better way? It just sounds like he is losing the plot at a time when he is supposed to be the stable influence that is going to steady the sinking ship.

Don’t think Sam Allardyce was on good terms with the press either. I think these press guys are too full of themselves and their own importance. Whilst it’s theoretically not good for either side if there is no relationship, these days I don’t think it would make a jot of difference to what they would write - even if Joe had been Mother Theresa. Could their lies get any worse? I’ve given up on the press .
Joe’s strength comes from knowing he is not in it for the long-term - so for a few weeks they might be negative about NUFC?? Would we notice any difference?
28 samthecat // Oct 3, 2008 at 12:50

29 ELFER // Oct 3, 2008 at 12:51
I’m sorry to say ED but your also doing this story…I think joe was right and he certainly has no idea to keep his mouth shout. Far better than to have non talkers at the club! Passion is allowed and the press should be warned, that they cannot do everything with joe!
30 tyneside tommo // Oct 3, 2008 at 12:53
This is not priceless or comical and the last thing we need is a tough talking manager whose brain isn’t working.
Simon Bird’s stuff has been spot on. JFK should have pulled him aside and had a quiet word. Instead he’s made a very public idiot of himself and Newcastle.
I’ve long thought that there is a London agenda by some of the papers against the Toon. This foul-mouthed rant simply plays into their hands.
Don’t be blinded by the fans who argue it’s disloyal to Newcastle not to support the manager, temporary or otherwise.
It’s as plain as the nose on your face. JFK always has and always will be a loud-mouth twat.
Don’t believe? Just read today’s Guardian and cringe.

32 danuneek // Oct 3, 2008 at 12:55
Why doesn’t everyone stop buying tabloids, then eventually they’ll stop writing this crap about our club. The only reason they write it is because a lot of Newcastle supporters buy the newspapers with one word written about the club. How many people on here can honestly say they have bought a tabloid solely for what it saying about Newcastle. I did, but i’ve learnt my lesson plus the internet is free
On another note, someone yesterday suggested that Sorin, Trabelsi, Appiah and the fat Ronaldo were up for grabs on a free. Well, surely Sorin and Appiah are worth a shout, particularly as we are down on numbers in those positions. Sorin has his Argentinian compatriots in Gutierez and Colocini and would be decent at left back, and Appiah is desperate to play in the premiership. We only have to sign them up for a year.

42 ronjohno // Oct 3, 2008 at 13:08
Whilst not condoning the expletives I am dead chuffed that someone at long last has the guts to fight back at the press and it is long overdue.
I am more disappointed with this blog owner for seeming to side with the journalists who get away with murder and then cry like babies when they are confronted. If he thinks this has brought more embarrassment then I am afraid the word must have a different meaning to him than it does me.
It was nothing whotever to do with these journalist and to continually ask why Kinnear had not worked on the Sunday beggars belief. Just who do they think they are
How many times have people come on here and complained about the bad press (blog owner included) NUFC get and now at last we have someone to fight back. Daglish was the same and was the only thing I admired him for- he always put Anal Oliver in his place.
These so called journalists had no right to continually ask Joe why he had not been at St James’s on Sunday -it was absolutely nothing to do with them or anybody else
I am actually a long standing Mirror reader for no other reason than it was always in our house from childhood and usually take what they say with a pinch of salt anyway on all matters not just football. From today though I will never buy it again .
43 Mark G // Oct 3, 2008 at 13:08
He was right to do what he did and as a fan I don’t feel embarrassed in the slightest. Alex Ferguson and Arsene Wenger always have a go at the press and its good that we have a manager who isn’t afraid to say what he thinks. The daily mirror is a rag but we should also blame the people who buy the paper, that is after all why they print such rubbish.
As for the poster who said the pc brigade wont be happy. You have no idea what you’re talking about and you shouldn’t try and bring in anything even vaguely political onto this website. Nobody cares what you think politically

Joe was right to have a go. Especially at Simon Bird who must write with a crayon - he must be special needs his reporting is it is so crap. It is also a very clever tactic to get attention on him and the pressure off the players. It gives the journos something to write about and at the very least he has made sure the write the truth for once in their lives. Well this was supposed to be off the record listening to the recording so the swearing shouldnt have ended up in the public domain. I think the Mirror does well allowing this out when it shows them in a bad light too.
I am pleased he did this though as it shows how much was rubbish as he is attacking a group of people on his own and even though they wrote the stuff they have no answer, if he came to me complaining about something I hadnt done i could easily defend myself.
I think he did the right thing, dont just lie down and take it come out fighting and put them on the back foot.
Joe might end up with a permanent job of taking over as interim manager in clubs as he seems to bring some calmness and has a good way about him, got to say as a temporary manager he is good, the players will like what he has done and the truth is oput to the fans (customers) which is also good.
While I do not like swearing it wouldnt have had the same effect without swaering, who is Bird? Me. Well you arent nice. wouldnt work in my opinion.

what interested me was the but about the press trying to splith the players up, i have always thought journos get together and come up with plans to create stories by saying they heard one thing to one player then an entirely differnt thing to another player at the same club.
tbh the only thing JK did wron imo was he didnt use enough variety in his choice of swear words.

CORRECTION: After the press officer told the reporters it was all off the record, Joe himself told them to publish it because he didn’t care.
Stereotyping all journalists it too easy - and I think you’re becoming victim to it Ed - as you can see they don’t get any time of it either. Like any profession in life there are good ones and bad ones.
Ironically all the tabloid talk of the backroom struggles and infighting at Newcastle over recent months was dismissed ON THIS SITE as complete rubbish without any proof to do so.
A positive and heart-warmingly optimistic view was instead painted and guess what: the press were RIGHT! Keegan walked, the club structure collapsed and the players gave up.
Balance is the key - and you don’t get it by automatically adopting the most opposite position from the national press. The truth is normally somewhere in the middle…
79 Whumpie // Oct 3, 2008 at 14:08
Right idea, badly done. Yes, it’s good to see someone having a go back - but in the process he showed that he’s ineloquent, easily phased, and incapable of stringing a coherent sentence together when under pressure.
Someone with wit and an understanding of how to put together a good slagging-off would have shredded these dimwits rather than just swearing and going round in verbal circles for 5 minutes.
Quite funny, though. And the press had it coming after linking us with hundreds of players and managers in the past few months - none of whom ended up in St James’s…
80 SAM // Oct 3, 2008 at 14:14
The PC brigade (including Ed) want politeness and are upset with JK (love the JFK name). Well Everton need the points this weekend and we need the players to come out fighting.
The lack of passion from the players has already lost us points. JFK has done the right thing - what’s wrong with fighting spirit. Maybe Ed has not looked at the league table for a while!
PS. Journalists don’t care about JFK cos he is on a short term contract. JFK was always going to receive unfair criticism/lies from the press cos they have no need to try and establish a relationship with him.

This bloke is proper old school. He’s only here temporarily until (more than likely) Keegan comes back with new owners. I would be worried if he were our permanent manager having a rant like> But he’s not so i dont think it will affect the club or team at all.
Those South Africans will be heading for their translation dictionaries though!
82 irish_al // Oct 3, 2008 at 14:14
He should of quoted a trinity mirror group insider as saying that “simon bird is a count”
Play them at there own game
That according to the insider he is totally inept at his job dictates when others should or should not hold meetings when indeed that is there choice to make not his

Well said,
Printing lies should be challengesd the agenda has been here for years and years.
Joe is doing a good job and good luck to him,
Some people might miss the team building effect this might have on our shocked players, at least the manager is clearly on their side and is willing to stand up for them against the press,
All we need now is a performance come on the lads on Sunday 2-0 to us
84 cause I got the girth // Oct 3, 2008 at 14:31
Ed - “Quite honestly this has embarrassed the club”, well looking through the comments people have put on here, you look like your completly on your own there like! I think its brilliant, needed to be said and i only hope his passion rubs off on to the players. Which ones Bird…….lol brilliant!
85 Macas // Oct 3, 2008 at 14:36
To me he chose the easy option instead of trying to outwit them with an intelligent response.
86 Mick G // Oct 3, 2008 at 14:45
It’s a shame because none of these journalists ever swear. It’s amasing they can print as many lies as they want ruining peoples lives, marrages etc.but as soon as someone as a go back they cry and sulk. The mirror apparently printed three pages about Joe swearing at them.Every manager should do the same thing then maybe they might turn into human beings or am I being to optimistic?
87 Bobby Ollox // Oct 3, 2008 at 14:46
This isnt embarrasing yet, but if we get tonked 6 nowt on sunday, it will be ! They will never let him forget these words.
He is still crazy - Ihope he can still remember how to manage
88 samthecat // Oct 3, 2008 at 14:55
The press are not interested in intelligent comments-they are interested in a headline-report everything negative-never report anything positive, always twist everything said. For them Newcastle getting relegated is a good story, lots to write about-a Newcastle recovery isnt so good who wants to write about that.
Bet Simon Bird is really looking forward to the next press conference.
89 The legend Of Jonas // Oct 3, 2008 at 14:56
He might not have said it eloquently, but it’s pretty much what I’d like to say to some of the j********ts twats who constantly write destabilizing and damaging outright lies about our club. I hope JF*K sticks to his guns and doesn’t do any more press conferences and talks to the fans through the local rags..
If you’re wondering why Ed is taking the stance he is - well you don’t want to upset your peers do you? How’s the ladder coming along Ed?

now now if Ed doesn’t approve that is fine, why he does not aprrove is for him to decide
it may be because of his column or most probably because personally he feels it was innapropriate (in part i would agree)
to suggest why he feels the way he does without any viable supporting evidence is what the people we are having a go at (the press) do
Are you a journalist?
There are some very good journalists around unfortunately there are more poor ones

Daily Mirror journalist Simon Bird has said he loves Newcastle United! (BBC Radio 5 interview). If he ever did, he should have apologised to Joe Kinnear for his training ground storey and any misunderstanding etc. BUT instead he was delighted to get a rise out of Joe at the Press conference. Making things worse with his dead pan comments of “have you read the article, and I did’nt write the headline, don’t blame me attitude”. A win on Sunday will make me feel so much better
100 Listie // Oct 3, 2008 at 16:05
It could have been worded better lol, but what he was saying is spot on, the press, as we all know are a useless bunch of muppets, that love to make up rubbish, i’m sure they went to the 2+2 =5 school!!!
I see today a lot of support has come out for JK, not just from Newcastle fans, but football fans in general.
All this heat just takes the focus off the players which in my book is exactly what is needed, and Ed, i don’t believe JK should apologise
101 reillers // Oct 3, 2008 at 16:18
I don’t know, now that I heard it, it’s not like I thought, he’s more then a wee bit out of line. He a wee bit stupid in what he does. He’s only there for 6 weeks, he knew full well what he was getting himself into. We all know what the press and the media are like, they’re like that with everyone, and he just goes and flips out, I think he could have worded it better, I think he could have done a lot of things better then he did. And like, right now at the minute, what he’s done will have consequence. He’s left us open to ridicule, we’re in a desperate state and yet, he goes and pisses off the media, who I’m sorry, as annoying as they are to managers and such, I’d rather have them on my side. Till now everyone who have played us and beat us have come out and said sure we got them at a good time and the media ran with that. He’s pretty much gone and pissed off everyone and anyone in the press circles.
Now I don’t care what the media says or does but we’re in such a mess at the minute, it’d be nice if we didn’t have the entire press against us as well.
102 Scott // Oct 3, 2008 at 16:23

106 lacedaemonian // Oct 3, 2008 at 17:26
Very true Greek. But I have to say I am glad he abused these journo’s who are hoping to embarrass him by publishing this off the record conversation. I am pretty sure they have breached an unwritten agreement (between the clubs and the media) by doing so. I imagine conversations like this happen regularly and go unreported. Joe is a soft target as he wont be in football for very long so they know they can have a field day with him with no long term damage done to them or their papers.
These journo’s are also the reason for the poor relationship the club has had for the last 10 months or so. At the beginning of the year they had a field day with Newcastle United - and this the crux for me - they were very abusive and slanderish about the Newcastle fans in this period.
They wont be forgiven.
Journalists are not good as a rule of thumb. The media is total dog shit. Sports journalists appear to be under a lot of pressure to make up negative stories about us. I dont care if it is the editor who writes the headlines. If I wrote a sentimental children’s story and somebody else wrote the title for me; something dodgy like ‘Paedo Club’, then the story would immediately be received in a negative light.
They take no responsibility for their ill work.
107 lacedaemonian // Oct 3, 2008 at 17:31
Macas are you brain dead? That is exactly how Joe responded to the media. Greek took the exact same lower tone. It was true what he said but he is a hypocrite and lost his argument within using his first seven words. I would not expect anybody in the sporting world to be as articulate as me. This is a rather warped expectation.
Excluding Olympic rowers.
108 Macas // Oct 3, 2008 at 17:40
Lacedaemonian - I’m sorry you seem to have lost me. The response from Greek Toon was witty and cutting without having to resort to a swear word every three words. The point I’m making is you don’t need to swear all the time to come up with an adequate riposte. So no I’m not brain dead thanks!
109 Shot Bru! // Oct 3, 2008 at 17:51
Kinnear’s rant is probably pre meditated, and will create a siege mentality ie. him, the players and us the fans against the world, pretty much what he did at Wimbledon. Old skool tactics which probably won’t work, the bloke is out of his depth.
110 lacedaemonian // Oct 3, 2008 at 18:04
Macas????? Are you pretending to be stupid? He used an expletive in his opening line calling Toon_Tom (and his likes) “little shits” and his comments were far from witty. The journalists would have had a greater field day had Greek tried to outwit them with cleverness….. unless of course you are a journalist in which case they would have been completely outfoxed.
I think you are what they call a “knacker”.
111 Ally // Oct 3, 2008 at 18:14
What a belter Joe, he said what all us are thinking!
112 Macas // Oct 3, 2008 at 19:23
lacedaemonian - There’s only one knacker here pal and it isn’t me. He uses one expletive, if you read my post properly you would see that that’s not what I was complaining about, it was the continual use of swear words by Kinnear. Get your facts right next time before you start giving me grief on here for nothing. At the end of the day it was my opinion, so there’s no need to get personal.
113 barcode forever // Oct 3, 2008 at 20:31
I think Joe is a genius, he is simply fostering a siege mentality. Its him and the players against the world, everyone outside that small group wants to knock chips off them. Get tight together and give all the detractors the two fingered salute.
This serves two purposes, deflects attention from a poorly performing team and focuses effort towards a common goal.
I am a Joe Kinear convert. The man has his back against the wall and his fists are up. If he fights for his life the players will follow his example. He has taken a difficult job, is proud to be given the chance and is determined to have a go. I am an ex soldier with 23 years service. I would follow him into battle, lets hope our over-pampered under-achieving players feel the same.
GO JOE GO
114 BenjiToon // Oct 3, 2008 at 20:55
Well, well, well - just when you thought it couldn’t get more surreal.
There are 3 issues to seperate out here and most of you aren’t doing that. First, there’s the point JK was making. Second, there’s the language he used to make them. Third, there’s his manner and how it affects his relationship with people around the club.
1. JK’s point is that the national media, not local, have printed consistent mistruths about Newcastle and should stop. They seem to have a deliberate mission to undermine the club, and that happens whoever is in charge of the team. It even happened to SBR, who is widely seen as a respected elder statesman in the game. That point is one we can all agree with and someone had to draw a line in the sand somewhere.
2. Joes language is badly chosen and will mean that many people (obviously not those on here but lots of others who do’t blog) will not listen to his point. That’s a real shame and he COULD have made the points aggressively with much better language. Having said that, as a journalist on other topics myself I have removed expletives from quotes when appropriate to make sure the language didn’t interefe with the point being made. Unfortunately Joe has used so many that this becomes harder, but not impossible. Journalists should be able to respond to the point as well as the language in my opinion.
3. Joe’s manner should not be confused with his style of language. Just because someone swears a lot doesn’t make them a thug. It’s the threatening style of his behaviour that worries me. A bit too aggressive for my liking BUT maybe that’s exactly what the team needs, someone to shake them up.
Finaly, what’s the upshot of all this? Well, Joe’s job is to get results during his short tenure by drawing the team together and making them fight. Does this press conference help? If the players are pissed at the media then yes it will. If they don’t give monkey’s about the media, and follow the negative response in the papers, well maybe not. Let’s hope to hell its the former.

jokes aside i think he is great
116 Toon_Ksk // Oct 3, 2008 at 21:45
He had a heart attack before, there is no point being so angry. Definitely not worth it. His health is more important and he should just enjoy his time managing Newcastle, focusing on football matters rather than the media.
The media will shut themselves up once we start winning.
Maybe he will look back and regret his actions.

joe stood up for nufc, after being there a week. some of those journo’s muyst’ve really been writng some shite to get such a backlash and they bloody deserve it. this guy is no wet blanket, no beating rouynd the bush, and that is the exact type of character that is needed more at nufc, players too since they’re all quiet as hell.
what do we think of kinnear director of football, keegan first-team (with veto type influence on all club matters), shearer and beardsley? dont care, give them a role, that’ll inspiure the lot of them to attack and play football like it needs to be played.
118 Lawman // Oct 4, 2008 at 5:26
not really a kinnear fan tbh but i’m right behind him on this occasion. the guy is just telling the truth and sticking up for himself. it’s about time someone told these pricks off for not doing their jobs properly.
ed, i as a newcastle fan don’t feel embarrassed at all. in fact, i feel slightly proud. i bet every manager in the epl wanted to say what joe said but didnt have the balls to. if anyone, its the journalists who should be embarrassed. Joe’s basically vented his anger at their unethical journalistic practices and by printing and distributing the whole press conference transcript, the journalist have just shot themselves in the foot by proving Joe was right.
Hahaha… bunch of idiots!!!

Sorry like Ed, I know some of his language wasn’t exactly family friendly reading material, but I love his character, and how much he stands up for the club. Joe is solving the communication problem, and wants full control and responsibility. I honestly think he deserves until the end of the season to try his best like we did for Roeder. He has been a scout since leaving football so should know a player or two.
