Michael Owen Likened To Legendary Jimmy Greaves

October 3rd, 2008 by Ed Harrison · 163 Comments

Interim Newcastle manager Joe Kinnear has likened Michael Owen to the ormer great English goalscorer Jimmy Greaves.

Michael Owen - likened to the great Jimmy Greaves

The first time we saw Jimmy Greaves was when a very young Chelsea side visited St. James Park - think it was around October, 1960, and they tore us apart - I think 6-0 - and 20 year old Greaves got four.  Chlesea  wore blue of course and shiny satin white pants.

19 year old Peter Bonnetti was in goal, and a certain Terry Venables, then 17 was in midfield. Any other old timers at that game? :D

Greaves was sublime, and the thing that was said about him, was that in the penalty area, when chances came, he actually got cooler and more composed, and he could certainly could slot the ball home.

Of course that was the season we were relegated when Charlie Mitten was manager and my first season as an amateur at the club, when I was 15, and it was also Bobby Moncur and David Craig’s first season, and they were the same age. So it was little bit more painful, although in 1962 Newcastle won the FA Youth Cup with Moncur and Craig in the side.

Greaves of course moved to Tottenham in 1961, when he was 21, and is Tottenham’s club record goalscorer, having scored a fantastic 266 goals in 379 games. But also realize that when he was at Chelsea, until he was just 21 years old, he played 157 games and scored 124 goals for The Blues. Incredible.

Our own Michael Owen is on Sunday looking to score for a fourth consecutive game, and surely he’ll make the England side for the World Cup games coming up. The 28-year-old has scored five goals there on his last four visits with Newcastle United and Liverpool.

Joe Kinnear played alongside Greaves at White Hart Lane for five seasons – and thinks that Michael Owen has few equals in the modern game.

Kinnear talked about the comparison between Owen and Greaves:

“Michael can have a serious impact – everything about him is quality, from his demeanor to his approach to the game.” “We know he’s one of the best finishers. I played with somebody like Michael in my time, and that was Jimmy Greaves.”

“He’s sharp, has a very quick brain, sees the opportunity and reads the game well. He’s exactly what Jimmy Greaves was all about.” “It’s nice to have somebody of such importance in the dressing room, and this week Michael’s been a great help around the ground.”

“Damien Duff’s a great player and an Irish international, and there’s Nicky Butt as well.” “These players have wonderful technique, and they approach the game in a professional way. I like that in a player.”

Micheal is a natural goalscorer, and he”ll never lose that, as he has been proving this year since Keegan arrived back at Newcastle, and one reason we want him to stay at the club. We believe that if the SA consortium buys Newcastle, and then brings Keegan back, Michael will sign an extended contract for our club - hope so anyway.

In around 55 appearances for Newcastle he’s scored 25 goals, and given the last 3 years of injury and stop start appearances, that’s really good. It shows you how good he really is and just imagine how many he would have scored in say 150 appearances over these last 3 seasons.

That’s of course what we were all hoping for, when he signed from Real Madrid, but hey - maybe the next 3 seasons.

Comments welcome.

the story is out for such a long time and now he says that they were not interested at all……

something’s cooking at ashley’s board room

    1. he never communicates to media so much, yet with jo k he is releasing club statement twice everyday…

    2. jo kerinear having a transfer list….

    3. shearer and kk offerd jobs by new owners, when one of them(shearer) has denied the news
    strange!!!

  • 3 51times // Oct 3, 2008 at 21:32

Jimmy Greaves hates us Ed, why would you be praising him? Have you not seen some of the things he’s written about us? Dirty cockney drunk.

  • 4 hitman // Oct 3, 2008 at 21:38

wheres everyone gone, jimmy greeves total geordie hater fu*k um.

  • 5 daydeburt // Oct 3, 2008 at 21:44

yeah neeraj you could be spot on, is ashley just riding the storm and kinnear is our new manager and ashley will stay in charge, it all sound very very strange. its a bit like ashley has told him to tell the fans what they want to hear so it looks as though they are trying to sell and bring back keegan, and the fans will just sit back and wait, until all the dust settles, kinnear gets a few wins and players back from injury, and everyone forgets the whole thing. HERES HOPING HE ISNT AND GETS OUT A.S.A.P
HE IS TO BLAME FOR DENNIS WISE,DEREK LAMB-ASSS,AND EVEN KEEGAN!

ALTHOUGH I WOULDNT MING KEEGAN BACK OR GUS HIDDINK

  • 6 daydeburt // Oct 3, 2008 at 21:45

    MIND NOT MING!

  • 7 Greg B // Oct 3, 2008 at 21:46

Rupert apparently very unhappy with the rumours that he was part of the South African bid, not very happy with where the rumour started.
Now I believe it was one oof the readers of this blog that (mis?)informed Ed about this so I wouldnt be surprised if nufcblog gets the blame.

  • 8 tom_toon doofus // Oct 3, 2008 at 21:47

i think something stinks about this whole takeover thing!!

  • 9 Greg B // Oct 3, 2008 at 21:47

Oh, and I agree with burt, the only person I would prefer to Keegan would be Hiddink.
Obviously Id like Wenger, Mourinho or Ferguson but thats not going to happen either.

  • 10 51times // Oct 3, 2008 at 21:50

Van Gaal is far superior to Hiddink. The latter’s recent club record isn’t that impressive, he’d be better off sticking to national teams.

  • 11 micknufc // Oct 3, 2008 at 21:53

hope he doesnt end up talking the same spiteful anti geordie shit as greves then

  • 12 daydeburt // Oct 3, 2008 at 21:56

Van gaal is also a very good choice as next manager, he has to be considered. i just want a new direction and some decent down to earth owners who want to take the club forward in the right way.
what would be nice if iam being greedy is for the new owners to have a good sized wealth and to be able to compete near the top, and also to put entetaining players on the pitch,
(just a team we can all be happy to watch).

  • 13 Shot Bru! // Oct 3, 2008 at 22:01

Here, Here, Daydeburt, the only change i would make to your comments is get Van Basten in charge.

  • 14 Tom_Toon // Oct 3, 2008 at 22:05

Van Basten is a pants manager.

Van Gaal in recent times has been very, very poor! Hiddink is far superior but we have no chance in getting him.

  • 15 Shot Bru! // Oct 3, 2008 at 22:10

Relax tom toon, was Hiddink not responsible for relegating Real Betis in the 90’s. Apart from Spain, the Dutch played some of the most entertaining and attacking football in the Euros.

slow on here tonight lads n lasses, probably alredy been discussed at length today, but kinnears outburst….all against making the club looking even more stupid(if thats possible).
but howay these tossers in the press have had this coming for far to long. the thing about it with me is i think the lad that copped it is always pretty decent towards the toon. never mind though..i wish that raggy arsed mackem cow from the gaurdian had been there louise taylor..nasty bitch.

  • 19 mozza // Oct 3, 2008 at 23:01

can’t stand her mick she makes my feckin blood boil as do the guardian for letting a mackem cover toon news

  • 20 Toon Chicken // Oct 3, 2008 at 23:06

alreet mozza - how’s it gannin?

not much happening here the night like.

thought JK’s outburst was bloody hilarious me self.

makes a change to have the rest of the country laughing with us instead of at us n’all. :)

  • 21 micknufc // Oct 3, 2008 at 23:06

  • 25 dubsea // Oct 3, 2008 at 23:15

joe kinnear said what many managers are scared to say….because he hasnt got much too lose…he’s back out of the game gone november… i reckon he might be a good gee up merchant for the lads

  • 26 micknufc // Oct 3, 2008 at 23:16

same here ,i think theyre lads from our era and a little before so i can totally relate..
i like the idea of a siege mentality, thet kinnear could provoke with this outburst.have’nt we been looking for that for a long time??
hello t.c. never had the pleasure ..but admired your work from an onlooker. lol

  • 27 Toon Chicken // Oct 3, 2008 at 23:16

was saying over on the previous article - i reckon the players would have found it funny as fook n’all - bet it’s given them a lift - stopped them moping around feeling sorry for themselves.

am confident if they weren’t already totally with Wor Joe they will be now.

reckon they’ll be reet up for scrap with the scousers on sunday! :)

  • 28 mozza // Oct 3, 2008 at 23:16

to be honest ganiyu, we’re all double worried to say the least,if joe lifts spirits and we move up the table with some good results then great, tension eased somewhat, if not then we’re looking at yet another relegation battle, biting our feckin fingernails right till the last game

  • 29 Toon Chicken // Oct 3, 2008 at 23:21

    haha - alreet mick.

  • 31 Toon Chicken // Oct 3, 2008 at 23:23

i was saying on the previous article earlier - i reckon the players would have been pishing themselves when they heard that press conference.

should lift the mood round the place i reckon - stop them moping about feeling sorry for themselves - takes the pressure off them a bit too. all eyes on joe now - at least from the media.

If the players weren’t already totally behind wor joe i reckon they will be now - 100%!

  • 32 mozza // Oct 3, 2008 at 23:23

good point dubsea, i have never heard a manager give a rant like that lol and it was great to hear those low life hacks snivelling away in the background lol, chickens a good kid mick, mind we have conflicting views on some things lol but thats healthy

  • 34 Brave New Toon - Taylor is a legend // Oct 3, 2008 at 23:27

completely off topic, but just found this which i posted on blog on the tyne.. in June… Seems a long long time ago!!

He’s a Idea Mike… slash the wage bill,. cut loose the 3 million a year we pay our ‘expert’ scouting team..
All we keep hearing is that we will wait until after euro 08 to make any significant moves, how does that make sense? and what excactly are we paying this full time scouting team for? We can all sit and watch all the matches at home and pick out a few decent larkers, surely this Wise and his mates should have identified the outstanding players in europe already??!! let’s wait until everyone see’s the good players.. price inflates, and spurs/pompy/etc nick them. It doesn’t ,make sense.
The Dos Santos deal to spurs taday was amazing.. it’s been said before, but these are excactly the type of players (apparently) the new regime are after, so where were we?? (not even dotting the i’s on tayl’s new contract!
Ashton lost, Gomis lost, modric lost, dunne lost, dos santos lost… the list goes on.
as we stand the top ten are well in front of us,. investing well, investing early.. and all the nufc board are doing is worrying the toon.
if only for the sake of pr, we need to make a move… KK needs to abandon his holidays stand on the steps and tell his people whats going on… I fear something is amiss, and we need the truth!
However.. patance IS a vertue, and maybe we are all jumping the gun.. maybe we will all be proved wrong, but until then,. I maintain my serious doubts over the motives of Wise/Jimenez etc.

  • 35 Ganiyu // Oct 3, 2008 at 23:28

  • 41 Toon Chicken // Oct 3, 2008 at 23:35

aye mick - it’s good crack on here - some canny lads and lasses. found me self in quite a few arguments of late - me being on the “darkside” and all - haha. most people can see it’s just cos i’m as passionate about the club as them, even though we might have different ideas about what’s best.

  • 42 51times // Oct 3, 2008 at 23:37

BNT - Dos Santos hasn’t exactly set the world alight at Spurs. I watch a lot of Spanish football and he got pushed off the ball over there easily so I doubt he can last here without diving, which we’ve seen him do a few times already. Barcelona got a good deal on him, they have Gai Assulin to take his place as the young winger/ss in the squad.

  • 43 mozza // Oct 3, 2008 at 23:37

  • 44 micknufc // Oct 3, 2008 at 23:39

i think barton was looking the dogs asweel.
rate him highly.. dont want to sound to angry and that.but i think a lot of older toon fans are thinking weve tried all the other ways lets go and frighting the shit out the other team,,,dont get me wrong i love football 2 wingers etc..but let us go and have a wimbledon attitude for aslong as joe is here it could be wll funny..and we could get some much needed points…

    aye 51
in hindsight i wouldn’t have him.. but at that time it just looked like we were been left right behind.. which we were!
if there’s one thing that brightens the year so far up… it’s that everyone’s ‘most likely to challange top four’… is propping us up

  • 48 mozza // Oct 3, 2008 at 23:41

  • 52 Toon Chicken // Oct 3, 2008 at 23:43

    know what you’re saying mick.

i love seeing football played the right way too - love watching arsenal’s kids whenever they’re on the box.

to be honest though, i’d soon sacrifice all that one touch passing if it meant we could win a trophy. it’s all ways been results first - performance after for me.

  • 53 Brave New Toon - Taylor is a legend // Oct 3, 2008 at 23:45

    mick..
the crazygang spirit may drag us out of the hole we are in.
But playing like that we have to get results.

Alladice tried it to a fashion.. we’d have complained less about the style of football if he was winning games like

  • 54 mozza // Oct 3, 2008 at 23:46

I think spuds are a blatent excample of bias southern press.
EVERYONE was saying how great they are gonna be this year ramos is a god.. bently, modric etc… but even now in the mess they are in,. they still don’t get much bad press.. compared to us like

  • 56 Ganiyu // Oct 3, 2008 at 23:49

Personally I’d rather we finish midtable every season playing brilliant, entertaining football than win a trophy using boring long ball and direct tactics. Like the Oranje in ‘74…the greatest team of their era and they get beat by boring Germany. But even though the Jerries won it, people remember that World Cup for the debut of Total Football. Teams like that must be what we strive to be like.

  • 69 Toon Chicken // Oct 4, 2008 at 0:00

I think a lot of people feel the same way mick. I know a lot of my mates do any way. I don’t think it’s just the fans that are losing the love either - I see far too many players these days who look like they couldn’t give a toss what happens on the pitch - just so long as they get their pay cheque.

Plenty of other stuff gets my goat as well - players cheating all the time - diving and that, then whingeing to the ref if they get pulled up for something.

I like pretty much all sports and I’ve got to say I got a lot more pleasure from watching the rugby last autumn and the cricket this summer than I have done watching the toon for a good while.

but then again he obviously wasn’t given the funds he thought he would have.. given time he may have come good.. but i think he was in real danger of getting us relegated first.

He’s still got to prove that he can get a team to play more than one way imo

that’s what i mean mozz - i just wanna know what it feels like to see my team lift a proper trophy.

even friggin boro’s fans have had that pleasure in my lifetime. i don’t care how we do it - 10 men behind the ball and a deflected winner in the 91st minute would do me.

Killy Mans Giro - Haha, fair enough. You’d be surprised at how many Newcastle fans have Rangers sympathies. I have met a few fenians around the place but what can you do. I tell you though, I’ve always found it funny, they all go on about Irish independence and sing their IRA songs but they come and live over here anyway. As the song goes: “The famine is over, why don’t you go home?”. Anyway, enough on that.

  • 145 ObaFan2 // Oct 4, 2008 at 1:36

ha ha mozza, imagine a night out in shearers.. it’d end up a riot for sure…..

maybe when we have something positive to drink too……

  • 146 51times // Oct 4, 2008 at 1:37

Yeah, I prefer to watch older matches when I can. Premierleague matches are boring nowadays, everybody is so scared to lose all they do is defend. People call it the English style, earning the right to play…nonsense, it’s boring to watch and probably why England have won nothing since 1966. I mean really, how many English flair players can you remember? Beardsley, Gazza and Joe Cole are the only ones who come to mind for me. English football needs to look at the Dutch and South American youth coaching techniques because we’re being left behind.

  • 147 ObaFan2 // Oct 4, 2008 at 1:42

some truth in that 51 times, alot of the flair players have extra duties nowadays, like wingers have to be prepared to defend more… Rooney could be on ur list too but he seems stiffled the way ManU and England play.

God English club players are not performing for England, Lampard is a good example whereas someone like hargreaves, although not a great player does well foe England.

I agree about J cole though… great player and nearly always a sub. SWP doin better now he’s settled again.

  • 148 ObaFan2 // Oct 4, 2008 at 1:43

Oh JD taking hold, typo times lol

  • 149 mozza // Oct 4, 2008 at 1:43

lol oba, ad be up for it, ad love to meet a few of the gobshi*es of here face to face, it would have to be when or if we ever have something positive to drink too though, yer reet, yer reet 51 those players are few and far between now

  • 150 mozza // Oct 4, 2008 at 1:44

    lol oba

  • 151 51times // Oct 4, 2008 at 1:45

Joe Cole doesn’t get to do the tricks he did at West Ham for Chelsea. Thanks for that, Mourinho. That’s why he could never manage Barcelona, Barca are expected to win in a certain style. Like Ajax are and we are to an extent.

Anyway, I’m going to see if I can get some sleep…night boys.

  • 152 ObaFan2 // Oct 4, 2008 at 1:49

Anyone else confused about the takeover ?

Firstly we had the Nigerian faceless billionaires, now all the supposed SA are ruling theirselves out of the consortium!

  • 157 magpie6699 // Oct 4, 2008 at 8:46

    The bids? - 2 possibilities.
    1. The real people want to stay anonymous at this stage, the press take a punt at some names without facts ( What? Journalists make things up? Heaven forbid!) then get a second story when people deny it - plus they can put in a big chortle about poor Toon fans being duped again… OR
    2. They are all a load of Horlicks.
Was the bit about 7 “interested parties” asking for the club’s books from a reliable source or another bit of kite-flying? Anyone remember where that came from?

  • 158 ToonEskimo // Oct 4, 2008 at 8:58

I saw that Clifford guy on SSN yesterday and he seemed totally legitimate, he wasn’t name dropping but seemed very keen to get into St

  • 159 ToonEskimo // Oct 4, 2008 at 9:03

Jame’s, I’ve no doubt there will be interested parties, but the million dollar question is
“Does Ashley really want to sell?” let’s face it he could easily have sacked Wise, yet he sell’s the club and Wise will be out of a job anyway…….
The knuckle draggers seem to be warming to Kinnear, who knows, a few wins and the for sale sign may well come down.

  • 160 AO // Oct 4, 2008 at 9:19

I dont think the club is really for sale. ashley will be hoping for a few wins and for the fickle fans to get of his back.

  • 163 Ericles // Oct 4, 2008 at 11:09

Saw Greaves score three against us at Chelsea when we lost 6-5. My dad and I walked away after a smashing game. It pissed with rain and Scoular led the teams clapping the crowd for staying throughout. However - I have never heard so many Geordies using the terms “poacher” and “goal-hanger” when referring to Greaves that day. There you are.
