Guthrie Back For Crucial Game At Everton

October 3rd, 2008 by Ed Harrison · 32 Comments

Joe Kinnear is delighted to have Danny Guthrie back in midfield for the important game at Everton on Sunday.

Danny Guthrie - welcomed back for Everton game

Joe Kinnear told the Evening Chronicle today:

“I get the impression from the rest of the players that Danny’s head was down a bit after what happened against Hull City.”“But he’s bright and very athletic. He’s a box-to-box player.”

“He’s a bundle of tricks and very enthusiastic. He’s very bubbly, a bit like Joey Barton, and it’s certainly a plus getting him back.”

Guthrie’s return to a United midfield which has struggled to say the least in his absence is a timely one.

And Kinnear  hopes Newcastle will be able to play two full-backs in their normal position at Goodison Park, with Habib Beye and Jose Enrique both looking like they will be ready to travel to Merseyside - that’s good news.

The Newcastle manager told the Evening Chronicle:

“Fingers crossed, if we have the two full-backs available, and Danny, we’re halfway there in getting the best side out.” “We’ve suffered through playing four centre-halves.” “It’s difficult to keep moving people around and get the organization right.”

“Hopefully, Enrique will be back. Habib Beye has his first training session today and Danny is back.”  “I just hope after the international break one or two more come back for the Manchester City match in a couple of weeks time.”

“They keep telling me about Jonas Gutierrez who has been outstanding by all accounts.”  “Everybody misses him, but he may be back for the Manchester City match.”

If we can get Beye and Enrique back that gives Joe a more solid looking back four, and more choice in midfield and attack.

Danny Guthrie has been one of our best players this season and will handle the midfield with Nicky Butt against Everton, and we need both of them to be at their best if we are to get the win we need and want.

Comments welcome.

Dont pair him with butt.barton and guthire make a good pair in mid field

    Bartons suspended

  • 4 JJ // Oct 3, 2008 at 13:58

Dont pair anyone with Butt, I rate him about as highly as Tom Toon rates Taylor…

    Rather have Nacho and Guthrie

  • 5 Ganiyu // Oct 3, 2008 at 14:04

Everton out of euro cup waste of space.

  • 6 Jack // Oct 3, 2008 at 14:12

    Nacho’s injured.

Bassong should keep his place but likely won’t.

    Should be:
Given - Beye Coloccini Bassong Enrique - Duff Guthrie Cacapa N’Zogbia - Xisco Owen

Reason I say Cacapa instead of Butt is just cause against Spurs (the last game I watched, I moved away to Uni the day of the Bburn game) Cacapa didn’t put a foot wrong, whereas Butt didn’t put one right. Butt’s been awful all season.

Highlights of the getafe vs ed harrison fc would be reviewed by 8pm tonight

  • 8 Ganiyu // Oct 3, 2008 at 14:17

Agreed with u jack.butt needs to sit and watch the game from the bench.

  • 9 ELFER // Oct 3, 2008 at 14:28

BUTT sitting on the bench will not happen…unfortunately at the moment we do not have a better midfielder

looking forward to pair barton with guthrie!

I’ll go along with you Jack, Casapa to play the defensive midfield role instead of Butt.

In fact I like your entire team selection on current form and availibilty…

When fit, Barton and Martins and Jonas should come in for Casapa, Xisco and Duff.

It would be typical newcastle to go and win or lose on sunday 4-3 in one of the most entertaining matches the premiership has ever seen. But what we really need, and will probably get will be a very long scoreless draw, hoofing the ball up time and again to our tall lanky lonely striker, Owen . Sigh !

Barton-Guthire = our best central midfield.

After reading that JK has been down to the gooners training ground with AW, I’m hoping to see an attacking 4-4-2 formation. It sounds like he wants to play, utilising two proper fullbacks which sounds like something Arsene would do!
Guthrie back is a big plus, but I dont know who i’d rather see him paired with until Joey is back. Butt on his day is good, but can be equally shocking n a bad one! I dont like to see Cacapa in mid…maybe risk playing Taylor and Bassong at the back with Colo just infront of them (depending on Evertons formation).
Guthrie and JB will be interesting to see :)

Wats wrong with Xisco and owen up front

  • 15 Turkish magpie // Oct 3, 2008 at 15:46

xisco is a great player he’s just not shown it in his short time here

danny guthrie and guttierez have shown it and they deserve it but xisco is good

also ganiyu i agree barton and guthrie is better than butt and guthrie but barton is still suspended and butts experience is good at the moment

did any1 here fraser forster is at stockport?

  • 16 Scott // Oct 3, 2008 at 15:53

Any talent available in midfield is a godsend for us.

He added youth means he will keep going for 90 minutes

the way things are we need need zidane not guthrie….but ye he was missed.

  • 25 simon376 // Oct 3, 2008 at 17:22

Don’t get me wrong here, I’m going to try and ignore all the off field antics of Barton, and I know we have a small squad at the moment, but what had Barton done for us on the field since getting here last year for people to get excited about Guthrie Barton partnership in midfield?

I’m just not convinced he’s done enough for me. I know Butt is getting older and we don’t have a lot of choice, but I haven’t seen Barton excel as of yet.

  • 26 It Could Be Worse, We Could Be Spurs! (DC) // Oct 3, 2008 at 17:45

Barton was instrumental in our turn of form last year. I didn’t check stats but he seemed to provide just about all of our assists at the end of the year. Guthrie has shown that he can be a tidy player and his work rate is obvious. I just really hope JB has been keeping himself fit and hopefully he will be raring to go when he gets back.

Get in there you little leg-snapper.

  • 27 Geordie Jayne // Oct 3, 2008 at 17:49

I like Guthrie, he seems like one player that will play for the shirt he is wearing, with pride.

  • 28 TOONPIPES // Oct 3, 2008 at 18:35

Barton is CRITICAL to us getting back on track . . Him + gutheir in middle with zog and jonas either side . . Belta . . Barton the rescue I’m tellin you - once he’s back we will get to the get gan

  • 29 briss // Oct 3, 2008 at 19:10

Guthrie and Butt for now. Nacho isn’t good enough to be a starter. Xisco and Owen up front geremi and duff on the wings. colo taylor beye and zog at the back. thats our strongest available!!!!!

  • 30 Turkish magpie // Oct 3, 2008 at 19:13

no way nzogbia is never a left back and geremi on wing no!

  • 31 Turkish magpie // Oct 3, 2008 at 20:01
