HT: Everton 2 Newcastle 1: Late Taylor Goal For Magpies

October 5th, 2008 by Ed Harrison · 29 Comments

Newcastle were 2-0 down just before half time but then a beautiful ball from Geremi on the right was well headed into the goal by young Steven Taylor, to give Newcastle a chance in this game.

Everton had gone ahead from a Mikel Arteta penalty following a wild challenge down the left from Nicky Butt on Leighton Baines, which looked like a penalty.

But Newcastle were struggling down the left with Steven Taylor having a tough time of things at right back. Both goals came from the Everton left wing so it was fitting that Steven should get a goal back for the lads.

After 37 minutes youngster Marouane Fellaini scored his first goal for the club, from a left wing cross, but it was very badly defended by the Newcastle defense and there were some questions as to why Given couldn’t have cut out the cross.

It looked almost all over for the Magpies but not one player dropped their heads, and then a goal only just before half time should gibe them the confidence to come back in the second half. That’s why Geremi is in the team, and he’s a little like our own David Beckham with his superb crosses.

Joe Kinnear will need to be at his very best at half time, but this is when he can make the difference, and if we can get an uptick in form like we did last week, we may still get something out of this game.

Tottenham were beaten 1-0 at home this afternoon by Hull City, so even if we cannot get any points this afternoon, we will still be second bottom, but we have to go all out in the second half to get something out of this game.

We expect the lads to fight to the very end in these final 45 minutes.

Damien Duff scored from a nice ball from Steven Taylor after 46 minutes so the lads have come back from 2-0 down in just two minutes of playing time.

Howay The Lads.

  • 13 murphy // Oct 5, 2008 at 17:20

YES! come on the toon! Why is it that the only defender I feel safe with is bassong? n’zogbia is looking good

  • 14 Fans Should Own the Club // Oct 5, 2008 at 17:21

Yeah, Callum, been meaning to ask that. Does anybody know why Enrique came off?

  • 15 Terry // Oct 5, 2008 at 17:22

Kinnear said Enrique would only play 45 mins, so it was tactical.

a good point! Even before the game I’d have been ecstatic with 1, but especially for coming back from 2:2 down should be pleased with this…

HOWEVER I can’t help but feel we were worth the win, N’Zog and Ameobi should both have scored!

Nufc should try some thing new

  • 28 dougnufc // Oct 5, 2008 at 18:11

I thought Taylor did magnificent at RB, maybe that is his best position

Between, Shola should have passed the ball to Zog first time, if he did that, it would have been 3-2 to the mighty toon

  • 29 MarK // Oct 5, 2008 at 18:25

I wouldnt say magnificent…he did really well like.. maybe we shud stick with him being there until beye is full fit
