Shola Ameobi can be Newcastle United’s answer to John Fashanu, or so says our interim manager Joe Kinnear.
Shola Ameobi - to get one on one coaching from Joe
Kinnear worked with Fashanu during his first two years in charge of Wimbledon, and apparently he has been impressed with Shola in training last week, and he has already talked about how Shola can do a job for him at Newcastle.
But after the last season or so, he’ll have a difficult job convincing Newcastle fans that Ameobi has any future at the club. But not to be too negative, we hope Joe can bring the best out of Ameobi, although lots of managers have tried and failed, including Kevin Keegan.
Glenn Roeder was one manager who got the best out of him, and Glenn even had Shola scoring goals quite regularly. Kinnear is planning to work with Ameobi one-on-one this week to try to coax his undoubted ability out of the Nigerian born striker, who has been in Newcastle since he was 9 years old.
Joe said today:
“I think Shola has a lot to offer,” “I don’t think he’s the finished article, but he’s a powerful lad, and is willing to work.”
“I’m going to work one-to-one with him most afternoons, and he could be a John Fashanu.”
It’s not surprising that Joe will work with Shola, because that’s how a coach thinks, and it’s a challenge for him to get the best out of the lad. What Shola needs is somebody to raise his confidence a lot, and maybe Joe can do that.
We really do hope he succeeds, and if he does, it tells us just how good a coach Joe really is.
Comments welcome.

I think Ameobi has had chances enough, he’s a lucky guy to still be getting them. He definitely has skill and ability, but it seems that if he thinks about it too long he mucks up. If Joe can tell him one thing, I hope it’s “go with your instincts”.
5 Ganiyu // Oct 6, 2008 at 21:55
He has been living in Newcastle since he was 9.this statement proves that he started and would end it here at Nufc.no wonder the past managers tried to get rid of him and they always fail.

John Fashanu…hmmm…reminds me of the match fixing saga.
7 Shot Bru! // Oct 6, 2008 at 22:05
JK will hopefully toughen the lad up, Shola needs to be more aggresive, he seems a little too casual at times. Plus i think his injury woes haven’t helped his form. For me he’s not a regular starter, but definitely adds a different dimension coming on as a sub or playing from the start against certain teams. He’s a useful squad player, there would be little point letting him go at the end of the season on a free.

The problem with Shola is simple, find the guy who told him he was a good footballer and shoot him. Shola did quite well until he was told he could take over from Alan Shearer, since then he has strolled through games as if people should get out of his way because he is a great professional. I have watched him in the first team and in the reserves where his attitude is no better. It is all down to his attitude and if Joe can get that right he could regain his ability, but it has to come from Shola out on the park not on the training ground. He has squandered chance after chance when we have been devoid of strikers and he has been given another chance only to waste it. I would love to be proved wrong but at this time he is simply NOT a premiership player.

he looked better in the last 20odd or so mins when he came on on sunday then he has the last two seasons. Hope he is given a chance under kinnear. also i thought steven taylor looked quality and got us a point pretty much all by him self.
nicky butt has given away two pens this season that i can remember and were only 6 or 7 games into the season.

Bigpea that’s very unfair, Ameobi did great when he came on and his little turn past the defender was quite classy, and good instincts to square it to Charlie.
Somebody said it on here, if he was just that aggressive, he’d be good. We’re crying out for a physical presence upfront. Xisco is weak as hell for his height.
If he challenged in the air aggressively, shoved the defenders about, went in for crunching tackles, then atleast he’d be making a contribution. Howay Shola keep up your Everton performance standard and you could cement a regular place in the team.
13 AndyNUFC // Oct 6, 2008 at 22:20
Toonjon, you’ve reminded me…
A PLAYER OF HIS AGE, WITH HIS EXPERIENCE, FROM THE CLUB’S HE’S BEEN AT AND THE ACHIEVEMENTS IN HIS CAREER… WHY THE HELL IS BUTT STILL MAKING STUPID TACKLES?! He’s like Cacapa, in the defensive role you’d think the age and experience would be the biggest attribute they could have, but they throw themselves about and look worse than kids.

15 Listie // Oct 6, 2008 at 22:57
If JK can something out of Ameobi great the squad is so paper thin we need as many players as possible able to give something to the team.
I thought he as good as he has for a couple of years when he came on against Everton
16 Geordie Jayne // Oct 6, 2008 at 23:06
I hope he can do it…..but I seriously doubt it, Ameobi never looked any better in the reserves against so called lesser players. With his height alone he should be beating defenders to the ball but he fails to do it time and time again.
Watching with bated breath

18 Toon_Ksk // Oct 6, 2008 at 23:11
Oh come on, give him a break. He is still ‘young’, he will fulfill his potential eventually at the age of 35.
19 JJ // Oct 6, 2008 at 23:11
What is Ameobi good at?
Finishing - no
Holding the ball up - no
First touch - no
Heading - should be but no
Being strong - he ok
20 Big Dave // Oct 6, 2008 at 23:15
I personally think when he is playing he looks and acts like Bambi, but there must be something about him in training as every manager has tried to get him to play. he reminds me of Frank bruno great potental but just to soft. but maybe JFK can get him sorted
21 Rasko a.k.a Hadji // Oct 6, 2008 at 23:15
Why make it so difficult, just sell him and replace him with Carroll or Zamblera.
22 SwedEric // Oct 6, 2008 at 23:48
He can´t do it. Final. Every manager since SBR have said the same, and ok he had some decent games during a period under Roeder, but that´s it, in all this years.

27 PapaToon // Oct 6, 2008 at 23:58
Hes is only there because of our paper thin squad. I guy Ameobi’s size should be able to hold up the ball, he cant even do that, forget about scoring.
I think we would be better with some one like Josh Kennedy the Aussie striker who would cost a lot less than what we could sell Ameobi for.
28 Hilly // Oct 7, 2008 at 0:02
Why waste your time Joe? He’s “willing to work.” Really? That doesn’t show at game time. He’s the laziest pile of crap on the pitch. I could care less if didn’t score goals, but the guy doesn’t hustle at all. If the ball isn’t fed to him, he stands around waiting. Put him in the reserves and let him learn how to run farther than 18 yards before wasting any more time on this guy.
29 Hilly // Oct 7, 2008 at 0:03
AndyNUFC - Butt makes dumb tackles because he has to. He’s too slow to steal the ball the proper way.

Ameobi is equal to shearer.but shola is not equal to Newcastle.do you know y?behind every successful striker there is always a successful assist.the real deal is that shola doesnt really have someone he works with consistently.that alone disqualifies him to be a Nufc player.
35 skin d // Oct 7, 2008 at 0:27
i dont care what joe says shola amoebi is absolute garbage.
okay he put himself about yesterday, but it will not last.
shola does the same thing whenever a new manager comes in,does a bit of boot licking, the cute cuddly i,m a religious man pick me.
i have got to take my hat off to him,he deserves an oscar.
shola is just used to the lifestyle thats afforded to him at the toon, and nearly s##t himself in the summer when kk had cottoned on to him.
he thought oh the games up i,ll have to go elsewhere ,and actually work for my money.
oh there,s no more driving my gas guzzler around the streets of jesmond dene.
i think shola has made it as far as he has ,because he is the nice boy doesn,t drink, always first in to training ,he,s no bother is wor shola.
if he was any man at all he would have left the toon to prove himself, but even stoke city thought he was crap.
he never tried one bit for stoke either, shola for me will never ever be a striker.
he does not possess a forwards instinct, cannot make a run ,cannot head a ball, cannot hold up a ball, spoils good work made by the rest of the team,no quick enough either.
so i ask what good is he ,shola isn,t good enough to get a game for hartlepool imho.
36 Ganiyu // Oct 7, 2008 at 0:28
He becomes inconsistent and useless.Newcastle of today is different from those ages.a typical Newcastle player of today is oba.he is strong has pace, can work as a lone man striker with individual effort.had a feeling he would have recorded his name on the sheet last week.obas presence is always felt during games with or without result.
Owen was silenced during the match and could not do any thing cos he doesnt have any one reliable to work with or less feed the ball to him.doesnt fit the present squad

He almost setup the winner against Everton. With Martins and Viduka out and Xisco not firing on cylinders yet we need to get the best out of what we have and if Ameobi can put a few goals in then its good. Don’t just knock him for the sake of it.

Your only as good as your last game, can be said about players too.
The all too few games i’ve seen Shola actually put some effort in, he looks quite a handful and a premiership player. But all to often he crawls through games putting in minimum effort.
If Joe can get Shola playing to a CONSISTANT high quality level, then hes a better manager than i gave him credit for!

it doesn’t actually say what Shola’s being trained in. reckon it might be singing lessons - he’s more chance of being the next Shola Ama (unless Joe was referring to presenting Gladiators)
54 David Dutch // Oct 7, 2008 at 9:18
Hey Steve you di not leave much of the first team squad in your clear out. Unfortunately our old malaise is coming back trying to buy success with big named squads instead of building from within with a blend of experience and youth which I think Ashley wanted to do, although I am no fan of his as I said at the start he was in for the short term to make a big profit and then get out this was reflected in his statement about players - ‘buy young, develop and then sell for a profit’ unfortunately football is not a high street store stack it high and sell it cheap. Going back to Shola didn’t JK say he thought he could make a defender out of him? I think his defesive qualities are as good as his striking ones he is too slow and as I said earlier his attitude is completely wrong. Sorry Shola but I look forward to yu playing in another strip, we will never have afast attacking style of play if any manager thinks they can involve Shola in such a team. He may look good on the training ground where there is no pressure but put opposition in front of him and he climbs inside his shell, he has been given too many chances and we just cannot afford a player such as Shola in the team. I also think Butt should become a golden substitute as he is slowing down and now his best form of defence is a foul, there comes a time in everyone’s career where someone else has to say - lets call it a day!Look at actors, singers or any other entertainer, his brain says what he must do trouble is it is taking longer and longer for the message to reach his feet. Add Viduka (if he ever comes back) to that list, I believe he his boots are still brand new from the day he arrived.
55 SouthLincsToon // Oct 7, 2008 at 9:22
With Viduka on ther verge or retirement through injury then it’s time to try to get the best out of Shola
P.S. Can’t wait to see him present the next series of Gladiators!

Has everyone done the Worst 10 prem players ..
I think we’ve had our fair share of them, so I thought we could start up our worst premiership starting 11 . .crazy but its quite easy going with a 3 - 5 - 2 formation
Shaka hislop- (keeper was actually a hard call)
Titus shambles,Marcelino, Boumsong - a jumbo jet could daintly walk past these 3
Bassedas - Maric -Alan Smith - Luque - some fair and attacking ability here
Stephane Guivarch - Ameobi - some goals in these 2
60 clinta // Oct 7, 2008 at 10:45
Ameobi needs to spend more time in the weight room too i think, for such a big lad he gets pushed around far too easily.
I’m not convinced he’ll ever really shine or become ‘the finished article’ but he clearly has talent, which he aparently shows regularly on the training pitch and has done for years. that’s why so many managers have given him cahnce after chance, but he just hasn’t shown the same qualities out on the pitch.

I’ve said it before, if you cannot improve when training with the likes of Shearer and Owen, then you have to realise that you’ve peaked. If Ameobi had as much raw talent as some are suggesting then the likes of Shearer and Owen would bring out the best in him and he would improve. I haven’t seen him improve since his first game.
