Joe Kinnear had to rush down to the tunnel after 35 minutes of the game yesterday, to get instructions to Chris Hughton, since his cell phone was playing up.
Jose Enriquue - hamstring was playing up?
Joe wanted to have Enrique replaced, since he seemed to be limping, and he hadn’t trained much apparently in the previous week. However, Kinnear is adamant he did not break any rules in his attempts to get Enrique off the pitch quickly.
He told the Shields Gazette this morning:
“It was a tactical thing in some respects.” “Jose hasn’t trained and played, and I thought I’d give him maybe 50 or 60 minutes, but he started limping with the same injury, and I thought: ‘I’d better do it now’.”
“That’s when I was running down (to the tunnel). I couldn’t get the phone to work. Every time I was getting through to Chris, it was cutting out.” “I dumped the phone, and ran down. I was just shouting round the corner. I didn’t go on the pitch, so I don’t know why they are making anything of it.”
“I got the substitution sorted, and went back upstairs. I went down in the second half just to pass on some information because my mobile had gone, and I couldn’t get reception.” “It was really frustrating. I want to be on the bench. I want to see things and act quickly. Thankfully, it’s all over.”
We don’t think Joe will be penalized for that, because he was trying to save Jose more potential serious injury, so Joe should be OK surely.
At the time it seemed to us more like a tactical switch, because Jose wasn’t linking up too well upfield with Charles N’Zogbia. As it happens, Bassong played really well when he came on, and is looking a better player with each outing.
And it seemed that Jose was a little mystified why he was being replaced. and It’s now going to be interesting to see who starts at left back against Manchester City in two weeks, our money will be on Sebastien.
Comments welcome.

Bassongs a better left back than Charlie by miles!!
1st?

Bassong is a centre back, not a left back…
But, he’ll do a good job.
3 Mikey24 // Oct 6, 2008 at 18:33
Bassong is a beast down the left, wonder how he’d fair in the middle? Love the way he just bounces wingers off the ball like they arent there. I do like Enrique though and he has a hell of a lot of potential too. See how the next few weeks pan out really. Hope we put on a good who against city
4 Leo // Oct 6, 2008 at 18:44
its a good option to have because bassong could do a good job at CB but works really well on the left because he seems to work well with charlie
i would much rather charlie being left midfield and bassong on the left full back position, it means we have more pace and once beye is back we will be singing
5 Legs // Oct 6, 2008 at 18:46
Any one noticed bassongs running technique, love it. It kinda reminds me of michael johnsons (sprinter) style.
I think he’s steller, plus its obvious him and charlie have a good relationship on and off the field. Keep em both on the left.

Africa,s bid>>>>A SCOTS businessman last night claimed his £300million deal to take over Newcastle United would “astound the world”.
Jonathan Cleland, 46, brushed off doubts about his ability to clinch the deal and said he would find backers with the cash.
Cleland - who says other Scots are involved in the plans - added: “We are going to put together a deal that will astound the world because of the remarkable vision, insight and networking that has been brought to bear to make it come to pass.”
He described his role in the plans as “chief executive” and said he had anticipated there would be those who doubted him.
He said: “We are trying to buy a venerable English institution in the world of football.
“Of course there are going to be people that get cold feet or get a little bit nervous.”
Doubts were raised at the weekend over the credibility of the deal after one reported backer, South Africa’s richest man Johann Rupert, said he’d never heard of Cleland.
The Record told on Saturday how Rupert and two other South African tycoons had flatly denied knowing anything about a deal.
But Cleland, who was born in Africa to Scottish parents, said: “That is part of the cost of putting a deal of this scale together. I can’t comment on speculation.
“All I can tell you is that who we eventually do the deal with - because we will eventually do a deal with Newcastle United - may not be those originally identified.
“Obviously, the people who were mentioned were the people who were, at the time, our preferred backers.
“But if they fall by the wayside, then we will respect their decisions.”
Cleland admitted: “With the potential money that we identified deserting us, I’m less confident but I remain enthusiastic.
“The way I put it is - money follows good ideas, good people and a good plan and we have those, so we believe money will follow, if not from these gentlemen then certainly from others.”
Cleland, who came to Scotland nine years ago, runs a management consultancy called Corpreneurs from his home in Stirling.
He said: “Corpreneurs is my consulting business. What we do is to help businesses to improve their results.
“I don’t want to talk about me personally. I’m not doing this for celebrity.
“I’m doing this to help a wonderful English institution be the success it deserves.
“Of course I am serious about this. My own credibility is at stake and the credibility of Corpreneurs.
“I will never sidestep attention if it helps us but in this case it doesn’t.
“We need to operate under the radar to bring out the really big money people.
“The really big money people don’t want to have their names in the press.”
Cleland walks with the aid of a stick after suffering a stroke in 2004.
He runs the charity Headlight and said: “I’m demonstrating that people who’ve had brain injuries can recover.
“Some might argue it took my brain injury to be interested in Newcastle United.”
Last week, Cleland said he’d already met former manager Kevin Keegan and plans to bring the Toon idol back to St James’s Park.
‘Some might argue it took my brain injury to be interested in Newcastle’

Bassong is wicked + it is no suprise that with zog playing further up the pitch we looked a more attacking force than for long time . . To be fair.I have slated Duff but he was excellent - really good. . The performance was better than I’ve seen since he played for blackburn . . Gan on Kinnear get them fired up . .

Also can’t wait to see barton with gutherie in the centre . . You have to give butt some credit for like 80minutes but in the other 10 minutes of the 90 he gives away a pen / gets a yellow card / smacks 50 yard crossfield balls out of play and it costs us - he’s jus too old but barton needs to learn frm him

Have to admit thought Bassong was bought because he came as the cheap required backup for Enrique, but having watched him a few times realise the guy has potential.
He has a great deal of pace, strong on the ball,
a tall physical defensive presence.
His drawbacks are basically things that can be worked on and combined with more experience could become an effective attacking left wing back.
Which would result in a strong and pacey left side with Duff and N`Zogbia interchanging in front.
Before i finish have to congratulate the side,
played well against a not bad Everton side and was impressed by the way the midfield tracked back in defence, something not usually seen.

An interesting question here I seen on another website which suprisingly a lot of people favoured Kinnear now.
Kinnear for keeps or Keegan?
I’m personally opting for Kinnear now lol,
I think this King Kev ‘watch this space’ rubbish is just that.
By all means Kev is a great man and manager, just I believe we need that bit fiestyness and agression, So you could also say Joe could give that.
Arrrr my heart says Keegan(not in a gay way)
But my head says Kinnear.
Decide amongst yourselfs…

53 KK FOREVER (Ross) // Oct 6, 2008 at 20:59
People favouring kinnear over keegan is sheer madness.
my head certainly doesnt say Kinnear. Just because he swore his head off at the press and got us a draw when we’re in complete tatters against a team who is also completly lost doesnt mean he’s brilliant and should be given the job permanently!
If keegan never left i doubt anyone would be shouting for us to appoint Joe Kinnear if we were in a similar situation.
I dont know if bringing Keegan back is the right option, but giving JK the job permanently certainly isnt.
Trust me, i’m not having a go at kinnear, i’ll be thoroughly greatful for whatever he gets out of his 8 games or however long he’s here because he’s stuck inbetween a rock and a hard place with the newcastle job, but he will take massive praise for whatever he does (eg gets us a draw), due to the fact we’re a complete shambles.
54 beyethegreat // Oct 6, 2008 at 21:01
dan i agree its a tough decision the question is though could kinnear do the job long term i thouught roeder would be a good managerfor us and he might have been you never know he had terrible injuries( as per usual ) but who ever the next manager is we have to support him not just for the first few months when things are going great but even in the hard times its the only way for consistency

KK forever, after the arsenal game, even before he had resigned…i wished we had a more tactically competent coach than KK….
Even after two matches on the sideline (remember his half time talk last week and this match against everton), i’m convinced he’s more tactically competent than KK…and he does have his way too of motivating everyone…(a great atrribute of KK)….so kinear defn a step up
I think he can do the job in the long term….before his heart attack…how long do u think he had served at Wimbledon….you think a few years outta game makes u shite…of course not!!!
The Everton draw is no mean achievved KK forever (Ross)
Since Robson, this is the first time we’ve gone to Goodison and come back with anything (and even then it wz also 2-2)
Everton took a two nil f***ing lead and we did well to come back….

One of the things that is impressing me about kinnear is that he is going to take time to individually coach certain players . He seems to already have an understanding of the players he has and seems committed to improving them , thus improving the team as a whole . This proves that he is not here to only pick up a big wage but cares about his team and wants to make a difference . The guy had the balls to take the job on when others did not . For me that says a lot about the guy and makes me feel that he can move the club onwards and upwards
75 KK FOREVER (Ross) // Oct 6, 2008 at 21:37
Jude-no no of course i dont think a few years out makes you a bad manager…look at keegan!!
I agree with you in a way..yet at the same time, i think its more the situation we’re in that is suddenly motivating the team, more than the manager.. (that may not make much sense, so i’ll try and explain)
We’ve been at a loose end with no manager, no idea whats going on upstairs, etc. all of a sudden, Kinnear is in, a good motivator, and we’ve went away from Goodison with a point. Like i said, i dont doubt kinnear and im greatful for what he may achieve, but i think the players have been given a massive boost purely from the fact that they have someone to work under now.
For me, it could have been a whole host of managers who had been given the interim position, and the mood would still be the same, they finally have some sort of guidance, some sort of routine, a managerial figure that they can look to impress and play for.
However, i see your side of the argument. Kinnear clearly said something to them at half time that gave them a proper kick up the arse, and there may not have been many others considered that would have that sort of motivational quality to them…i just dont think he’s right for the long term. Then again, i have no idea who is. We’re still completly turned upside down!

I know Eboue has been there a while he has always played RB. Give him time to settle as an AM andhe’ll be excellent… watch…

Bassong isnt that good yet in the final third, his crossing needs work.

Bassonf is a CB and shouldnt be played at LB
Especially if we use attacking wingbacks (which we did under king kev anyway)

Get Taylor out of the heart of defence…He sucks…Replace him with Bassong.

Doesn’t say a whole lot about 6.5million Enrique that a centreback kid we got for next to nowt is going to keep him out of the side. Which I think he will.

I think jose could build a fantastic partnership on the left side with gutièrez!
As well as beye with geremi! I’m excited to see this setup and in front again duff with owen! Howay the lads!

Lets not rewrite history-it was Keegan who had the tactical idea to play Owen in a withdrawn role behind 2 strikers-it worked and saved last season.
I t was Keegan who was quite prepared to have a look at Bassong in training and realise he was a good player and give the ok on the signing.

Worst 10 prem players ..
I think we’ve had our fair share of them.
Titus shambles,Marcelino, Boumsong - 3 in one go
Ian Dowie (worse scoring record than alan smith)
Alan Smith - to be fair this is only going on current form
Thomas Brolin - Leeds (he got so fat he couldn’t run, class act before going to leeds)
Taibi - man U’s worst ever keeper(even the away fans were cheering him)
Stephane Guivarch Newcastle- man that guy could not score any goals
Sergei Rebrov - class player with Shevchenko but cr*p for spurs (couldn’t happen to a worse team)
Akinbiyi (leicester)- only been outdone by Ian Dowie in the can’t score for sh*t league

Anybody saying kinnear is better than Keegan must be mad ..
Fair play to Kinnear for doing well for us at Everton (who are cr*p at the moment)
but come on compare Wimbledons football with Newcastles keegan brand of football .. no contest.

Elfer, Jonas is predominantly a rightsided player. So why would we waste him on the left when we have Zog and Duff to fill that position?
IMO, Jose hasnt shown his potential yet, and I’d be happy for Bassong to keep that position.
Sweendog, but come on compare Wimbledons football with Newcastles keegan brand of football .. no contest. I agree with what you are saying, but JK hasnt got us playing the Crazygang style has he…we looked like a good passing team on sunday, not many long balls played at all.
98 sweendog // Oct 7, 2008 at 14:33
ToonRich .. agreed .. but I read some comments on bbc from Forest supporters .. now I’m all for giving Kinnear a chance .. but they slated him for the reason that after 1 season he got them playing long ball football .. on a plus note he supposedly got Andy reid etc (flair players) playing well again .. fingers crossed we get a few good results .. Man City and West Brom home wins will go a long way to keeping Newcastle in the Premiership.
99 ToonRich // Oct 7, 2008 at 14:38
Yeah, I hope he doesnt install a longball way of playing over the coming month…could that be his thought about geting Shola playing again?
If their right about JK getting flair players to perform then we should be in for some good entertaining football, what with the likes of Zog, Jonas & Duff all playing when fit
100 sweendog // Oct 7, 2008 at 16:48
ToonRich .. yep its got me worried he’s concentrating on praising duff and getting Ameobi and Xisco to sit in the box .. looks like he’s trying to get some high balls in early into the box .. hopefully this is when our wingers are at the by line instead of route one .. but sure I think by trying this he is actually playing to our strengths .. good wing play and getting the strikers in the mix .. ‘Mon the Toon

Cooper
How can you say Bassong is a CD as apposed to a LB.
Have we watched him enough playing both roles to make that decission ?
I feel his future is as an attacking wing back, due to his pace and strength on the ball combined with decent defensive capabilities.
Yeah I will concede his crossing and picking out the open man leaves something to be desired,
but through practice and experience that can be
rectified.
Think the guy has a future with the right coaching.
Not to say he could`nt also develope into a decent CD.
