The majority of people never let facts get in the way of a good story and fans respond to whatever rumour is flying around at any given moment. Ashley bought the club, removed the major part of the debt that was dragging the club toward oblivion, to be fair it was in his own interest to clear the debt for if he intends to sell the club, if it had a major debt on its balance sheet that amount would be deducted from the sale price (unless the club went bankrupt), now he will get his money back by including the debt in with the original purchase figure (good business sense here). His major mistake was in the management structure that he put into place, his idea being that just like his retail operation, put in a senior management team to run the business day-to-day and he sits back and only appears at AGM's etc. His problem was that whereas his management structure in his retail business is OK his management structure at the 'Toon' is not. You need a chairman who communicates with the media on behalf of the club, Mort did a good job even though he was not a football man. You need a Director of Football who is appointed WITH the manager/coach approval so they can work as a team, the manager identifies players he would like to have to blend into his squad, the DofF attempts to sign those players negotiating contracts etc, if he identifies any players he thinks would benefit the club he refers them to the manager who has the FINAL decision, THEY WORK TOGETHER for the good of the club, even if they have both got strong personalities. That system works in any business large or small the name management TEAM is very important you cannot have an effective team if they are pulling in opposite directions. Where Ashley has gone wrong is his apparent unwillingness to change all the personnel in his upper management team because they are not pulling in the same direction and destroying the club. He is no fool and he can see that his investment will be almost worthless if we lose premiership status. The fans do not like it because they are emotionally tied to the club (I should say I attended my first match in 1950 and have supported the team ever since attending most home and many away matches in that time). The fans should forget the emotion and spend all their efforts on supporting the team not trying to bring down the Ashley empire - which they never will nor should they be able to. A good start would be to stop reading newspapers accept they only print hype to sell copy not necessarily tell the truth. Stop having knee jerk reactions. There is a saying better the devil you know and it may be true in the case of Newcastle Utd. Perhaps it would be better if KK did not return, that Shearer remained a BBC Pundit and that Ashley finds a supporting investor and the fans get on with their job of cheering the team from the terraces through thick and thin.
