Goalkeeper Steve Harper has talked about Joe Kinnear today, and starts off by saying Joe is a real character.
Steve Harper - enjoys the training under Joe
Harper, who played for Newcastle Reserves last night in their 2-1 defeat at Wigan told the Chronicle today:
“Joe is a character.” “He’s great out there on the training field.” “Chris Hughton was doing a great job but Joe has come in and done a good job.”“He has put the edge back into training with the way he operates.” “The training has been good and we have worked a lot on set-pieces.”
“It was fantastic to get a result at Everton.” “At 2-0 down you are fearing the worst.” “The manager showed good tactical know-how and made a couple of changes.”
“We can now enjoy training for the next two weeks.” “If we’d had a hiding, the doom and gloom would have continued.” “It was a great result – hopefully it is the start of an upturn in our fortunes and we look forward to Man City.”
You have to be a strong character to be successful at managing Newcastle, so it’s good to hear the praise for Joe from Steve Harper, who has always been very down to earth and a mature leader while at Newcastle.
Steve demonstrated his worth last season, when he filled in for the injured Shay Given brilliantly, and he’s been a great servant to the Tyneside club, since he joined back in 1992.
His contract runs out this summer so once the new owners come in, we’ll need to get that sorted out, but we have this terrible feeling that the global credit crunch will delay the sale of the club. It’s almost inevitable, given the credit situation.
Comments welcome.

Wa . . By the way has anyone seen the comments about fining clubs for being too debt ridden . . Its a reminder to me of the vision that MA had for the way our club shud be run . . Sadly, his desire to make the club economically sound and place emphasis on younger players has been viewed as penny pinching and being a tight-wad etc etc . . Its a pity the Kloners (term of endearment) or Kev himself didn’t see the benefit - in anycase whilst most Kloners blv they have got their way + MA will sell, I’m not so sure us MA ‘bum boys’ might still get what we wanted as I don’t think MA will find a buyer, not for a while anyway . . Problem is that he might run out of patience and. If he does, he might sell on terms he’s not totally happy with but does to get out of putting up with the mob and blv me the buyers will be even more ‘tight-fisted’ owner than the mob had before. . I repeat again we shud be begging MA to stay.
17 Dan13 // Oct 8, 2008 at 17:53
Finally!
Somebody who agrees with me on Mike Ashley’s policies etc.
I like the structure he’s put in place and the signings we’ve made (Not too sure on Xisco tho)
18 Xsico golden boot // Oct 8, 2008 at 18:08
I saw that article manure were something like 712 mil arsnil 340mil which suprised me and us 64mil unwashed 35 mil but this will not happen as these clubs are to powerful Oh and MA is tight
19 TOONPIPES // Oct 8, 2008 at 18:11
Dan13 mate I’ve been bangin this line on here since the kickoff mate . . Xisco golden boot - he aint tight you plonker he just isn’t stupid with money - there is a difference . . How do you think he (and any other prospective buyer of our club) make so much money? ! ! That sort of comment is MEGA ignorant in the extreme. .
20 TOONPIPES // Oct 8, 2008 at 18:16
Infact xisco golden shower your comment p isses me off . . Do you realise why we are in such a terrible economic climate? Its cos people have got too greedy and made outrageous financial decisions cos of their greed + flagrant disregard for the implications on other people . . I don’t blame the Kloners for wanting success at NUFC but we HAD to find a way to do it wherein we did it in a financially sound way - MA will have known that this economic crunch was coming, to a certain extent, and so his policy was tailored to fit the climate + in anycase it made sense crunch or no crunch. . Ignorant comment
21 TOONPIPES // Oct 8, 2008 at 18:18
You basically have no concept of the value of money imparticular when it comes to talking about millions of pounds and what it takes to earn it and how to manage it . .
22 Dan13 // Oct 8, 2008 at 18:23
well said
23 simon376 // Oct 8, 2008 at 18:27
He is tight. Not expecting him to spend stupid amounts, just to buy players to fill the places where needed. His net spend was only between 2 - 6 million this season and even less last I think.
If he had spend 4 - 6 million on top of that on a full back, it may have made him money in the long term

Geeeesh!. . Gutherie + bassong CLASS and regular first teamers and CHEAP . . All the buys except xisco (but I think he will come good) basically play in the first 11 and our net outlay was good . . HOW MANY OTHER CLUBS WHO ARE SIMILAR TO US HAVE DONE THAT?! NONE
26 beyethegreat // Oct 8, 2008 at 18:31
simon last season the net spend was 9 mil
27 shearer9 // Oct 8, 2008 at 18:33
On another note, I hear a rumour that Aaron Spear is leaving Newcastle. Hates is apparently, oh well…Nile Ranger looks a good player.
28 TOONPIPES // Oct 8, 2008 at 18:34
Simon I am quite sure that other players were OFFERED. To keegan BUT that he turned them down - probs cos they were like bassong or gutherie . . And not hypia or lampard . . Don’t you think they wud have tried? I mean are you forgetting that success for the club is quite important for the owner, he doesn’t want to make the team a BAD team? Does he? Cos he wud LOSE money + you sure as h ell think he likes keeping his money . .

Toonpipes, you are the most misguided person i have heard on this Blog, maybe stardust comes close, or you might be the same person. Since he arrived he is £1m net profit in transfers. We are third bottom of the league. Where is the attacking midfielder we’ve been crying out for since last season? I could go on and on about the obvious pr disasters he has dropped. People like you drive me mad with your distorted views on the situation. Are you a social worker?
72 simon376 // Oct 8, 2008 at 21:37
I’ve just come back in and reading the blog again, who knows what players Keegan was offered, but I do think the ones mentioned would have improved our team a lot more even if its just for the short term. The way I look at things is, get palyers in, improve the league postion and when the club gets higher up there, other better younger players will be more willing to join up. Maybe I’m totally wrong, just trying to look at the big picture
73 TOONPIPES // Oct 8, 2008 at 22:12
Troy yu dimwit I am one of a few people who try to look at the situation without my head stuffed up keegans a rse, a location you are clearly familiar with, I am no more or less mis-guided than you, but at least I have a point of view. Now dry your eyes and quit your pitter patter and run along to dust your keegan wallpaper and try and be a little more open minded you dull sheep
74 toonoot // Oct 8, 2008 at 22:26
“dull sheep” hahaha
75 Paul // Oct 8, 2008 at 22:31
“Where is the attacking midfielder we’ve been crying out for since last season?”
Keegan didn’t want him Troy, so he’s still playing for Rosenburg (and looking pretty good too incidentally), so we got another playmaker on loan from Valencia (now injured) at the last minute, then Keegan walked out.
76 TOONPIPES // Oct 8, 2008 at 22:59
Exactly Paul, if Keegan said he needed a player the recruitment team would have offered him one, as it happens becos it wasn’t Lampard Keegan chucked a hissy fit. . troy come down from dusting your keegan wallpaper and let’s see if you have anything remotely interesting to say, or are you still being ‘mad’ with me somewhere?
77 Paul // Oct 8, 2008 at 23:41
Aye Toonpipes, I was disappointed that we didn’t get Skjelbred. He’s a 21 year old Beckham, not a 33 year old one.
78 Jasar // Oct 9, 2008 at 0:06
Kinnear has yet to show some commitment to newcastle.
79 Ganiyu // Oct 9, 2008 at 0:08
Skelbred and Poconogli would come during the january window.
80 PapaToon // Oct 9, 2008 at 4:25
Toonpipes MA had a good policy for the youth system but he gave no importance KK. KK was just a Media representative of the club. KK did not get enough players in let alone players he actually wanted. The outcome of that we are seeing where we have shola on the bench and then the under 12s team.
If the team does poorly the manager gets teh sack, but in NUFC how can that work when all the decisions are being made by Dennis Wise.
I didnt care that we didnt buy $20 mil player but i did care that we had more first team players and players the Manager can fit into his tactics.
81 lesh // Oct 9, 2008 at 8:39
C’mon Tom Toon, wake up to the reality of things.
Yes, agree with the structure Ashley put in, in principle. However, without the right blend of personalities, it’d never work as communication and shared aims are a must.
Was that there?
Who recruited the structure staff?
Was the situation that blew up managed well?
Some good buys yes, but also some sales that left us very weak in some departments. Who was actually in charge of buying and selling
In principle, a sound structure and financial management but it strikes me there were and are glaring weaknesses in the hierarchy!
