Great Spirit At Training Ground - Kinnear

October 9th, 2008 by Ed Harrison · 64 Comments

Joe Kinnear has said the spirit in training this week has been great, after Newcastle broke their 5 game losing streak and looked very good in the second half at Everton and came fighting back from 2-0 down to get a well deserved draw.

Joe Kinnear - explaining things to Steven Taylor and Xisco last week

Joe talked about the feel good factor which seems to be back on the training ground this week:

“There’s been a great spirit at the training ground this week,” “Everyone’s been bright and bubbly, and there’s a feelgood factor around the place.”

“The two Irish players – Shay Given and Damien Duff – have been with us because they don’t play their World Cup qualifier with Cyprus in Dublin until next Wednesday.”

“But those lads who have gone away have done so with a spring in their steps.”

Everton manager David Moyes, whose side were eliminated from the UEFA Cup last week, warmly congratulated Kinnear after the game on Sunday.

Kinnear added:

“A lot of the managers in the Premier League have been very supportive of me coming back into the game, including David Moyes.”

“Sunday must have been disappointing for him, as it rounded off a disappointing week, but I had a glass of wine with him in his office after the game.”

Kinnear will be in the dugout at St. Jeames’ Park a week come Mon day, for his home debut ion front of the Newcastle fans, after escaped any punishment from the FA for going to the front of the tunnel on Sunday.

Joe finished by mischeviously saying:

“I’ll be in the dug-out unless I do anything stupid before then and get banned again!”

Joe - please try to keep out of trouble - we know sometimes it can be difficult.     :D

Comments very welcome.

He is a class type of guy Joe.The lads seem to enjoy the craic with him.
Hope things get turned around and get some wins together.

Gan on Joe give em a firecracker in the a ss ….

  • 3 ToonRich // Oct 9, 2008 at 14:21

If JK is still here in Jan (please forbbid!) what kind of player do you think he may approach to start filling out the squad?
Posistion and names where applicable? :)

If we’re under new ownership, would you still want the players you named for the above senario or who would you want instead?!

  • 4 TOONPIPES // Oct 9, 2008 at 14:25

Vinnie Jones and fash the bash .. tbh, have no real idea of who we should or could sign, i suspect they gave it quite a good shot in the summer and we just arent attractive to players .. well really good ones anyway …… have you got any suggestions?

  • 7 ToonRich // Oct 9, 2008 at 14:32

TBH toonpipes im in the same boat…I dont know who we’d appeal to at the moment. We’d be lucky to praise away some of the up and coming youngsters from the french and dutch league really…and then again, up and coming stars might not settle quick enough to help us out!
I wonder if JK could go see his mate Wenger and loan someone like Song as a backup/replacement for Butt? I’d say a holding mid is on the ‘must have’ list! Along with a rb, amc, st…and where ever else we get an injury :(

  • 8 ToonRich // Oct 9, 2008 at 14:32

daydeburt, whats the talksport link you keep posting mate? I’m at work and cant access it!

  • 9 Neil // Oct 9, 2008 at 14:56

The link says that this Dubai investment broker knows people who would buy NUFC in 2 hours should Ashley lower his price to under 300 million i.e somewhere near to what he bought it for. Whilst being worthy of a mention I am not sure it’s worthy of that many mentions!

  • 10 nufcneal // Oct 9, 2008 at 15:49

Does anyone know of a site that lists players that currently do not have a contract and are available to clubs outside the transfer window?

    And no Patrick Kluivert

  • 11 Ganiyu // Oct 9, 2008 at 15:52

Hope they trained more on the defensive aspect

  • 12 Wallsend Will // Oct 9, 2008 at 15:52

Editorial Director of Arabian Business.com - Anil Bhoyrul - tells us that Newcastle could be bought within 2 hours if the priced dropped. Ashley knows this, but is hoping for more and will wait and see. At he end of October we should all know who the new owners are likely to be. In the mean time Joe Kinnear will be in charge a bit longer than expected. I have a feeling that he will do well and get the team motivated to winning ways. Hope so anyway!

  • 13 beyethegreat // Oct 9, 2008 at 16:03

toon rich you may have forgot a rw to replace milner

  • 14 briss // Oct 9, 2008 at 16:04

When the time comes for Kinnear to go i hope we don’t throw him out and say he was useless because he has made an immediate impact. The players spirits are already high and he seems to hate the gossip media as much as most of us!!! i want to see keegan come back if thats not possible and kinnear is doing well we should definnitely consider him as a long term manager. just putting it out there!!!

  • 15 Micky Toon // Oct 9, 2008 at 16:05

Not to JK as long term manager. We need to be thinking bigger than that.

  • 16 ERIC CRAMMY MAG // Oct 9, 2008 at 16:17

he,s fat he,s round he swears like chubby brown joe kinnear joe kinnear

  • 17 NUFutureCowboy // Oct 9, 2008 at 16:20

‘no to kinnear, we need to be thinking bigger than that’.what drivvle.. i’ll tell you what it is lads and lasses. if joe keeps getting results he should stay. because its results that count, not peoples names. keegan is a big name and look how long it took him to pick the team up. joe’s done it in a week. give the bloke a bit support. you just never know.

  • 18 Ganiyu // Oct 9, 2008 at 16:36

Keeping viduka in the club is a very low ambition

  • 19 chuck // Oct 9, 2008 at 16:52

Least the PR system is now working.
About Ashley and Jimenez, yeah I know it`s been beat to death.
Say what you like about Jimenez, but you dont get to scout for R.Madrid without knowing your business and Both Spiderman and Bassong were decent signings AS far as Colocinni, I seem to remember a lot of fans also wanted him.
And Ashley, I really believe he wanted what was best for the club.
It was common knowledge his business plan was based on the Arsenal blueprint, identify, buy and develope young talented players (some are allready in the youth system) as opposed to paying large amounts for mature players.
Which brought about the conflict with KK who I believe wanted players like Henry brought in.
Unfortunately KK had little knowledge of the market other than the big names and probably felt undermined.
Regardless it`s MA`s team his business plan and probably a sustainable one as apposed to that of the LFC, Man. U. and others , who are so heavily leveraged they could be in serous trouble during the present financial crisis.
In retrospect it appears A combination of petulence on the part of KK and the bloody minded attitude (based more on emotion than fact) of the fans brought about the present situation.
At least MA had a plan , who kows what the future will bring.

  • 20 toooooonfan // Oct 9, 2008 at 16:54

what is the point of that fat lump viduka staying at the club he never plays and just rakes in a huge salary rather like stephen carr used to

  • 21 toooooonfan // Oct 9, 2008 at 16:57

    chuck
its also common knowledge that ashley is a fat greedy lump who is just in it for the money!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • 22 chuck // Oct 9, 2008 at 17:04

    Yeah, sure, typical denial statement.

  • 23 Ganiyu // Oct 9, 2008 at 17:07

I hope we buy a right winger during the next window

  • 24 Born Again Geordie // Oct 9, 2008 at 17:11

There is no real point in Viduka staying at the club. i like the guy but needs to be taken off the pay roll now.

We need to give the youth a chance

  • 25 I Made 1000 // Oct 9, 2008 at 17:16

off topic but…… do u think there will be any tickets left when they go on gernral sale?

  • 26 I Made 1000 // Oct 9, 2008 at 17:16

    against sunderland lol

  • 27 simon376 // Oct 9, 2008 at 17:20

Chuck, I’m all for saving money and not spending mega amounts if we dont have to, but with the current size of the squad, we dont have time to wait for these kids to come through. We need to spend a bit, maybe not loads, but a bit to sustain us and make us a more attractive propsition to other players who can take us forward. In time, the kids will come good and things will be OK.

I love the Arsenal set up, I think it works, just a shame Ashley didnt try to copy it. They dont have somebody bringing in players over Wengers head. Thats where its all gone wrong

  • 28 beyethegreat // Oct 9, 2008 at 17:21

    i made 1000

    no

  • 29 I Made 1000 // Oct 9, 2008 at 17:21

    damn lol

  • 30 beyethegreat // Oct 9, 2008 at 17:22

simon 376 absolutely brilliant well said

  • 31 xisco biscuits // Oct 9, 2008 at 17:22

chuck - jimenez did NOT scout for real madrid, that was jeff vetere. jimenez is not a scout and the only part he will have played in the signings is negotiating with their clubs. jeff vetere is the man who identifies the players

i’d like JK to stay at the club, but not as manager, perhaps as assistant though. i’d like to see someone like Terim, Van Gaal, or maybe even Steve Bruce. I’ve always been against Bruce in the past as he’s turned us down but you can’t argue that he’s signed some gems for Wigan - figueroa, valencia, palacios etc. He’s even got Titus and Boyce looking like Cannavaro and Maldini!! He’s also got them playing good, effective football

  • 32 I Made 1000 // Oct 9, 2008 at 17:24

hu has 50 loyalty points here then lol

  • 33 shearer9 // Oct 9, 2008 at 17:38

Shame about Viduka, he’s is a class act when hes fit and when he can be arsed. Never really realised his true potential.
If he was fit, my starting line up would definately include him Oba and Owen. Good times (NUFC 3-0 Reading, Spurs 1-4 NUFC, NUFC 2-0 Mackems).

  • 34 shearer9 // Oct 9, 2008 at 17:48

Wow things must be bad when I’m referring to last season as ‘good times’

  • 35 chuck // Oct 9, 2008 at 17:59

    Simon ,
you have a point, but my argument was the Jimenez -Vetere or scouting and signing teams ended up at odds with KK, who wanted big names with prices to match, instead of people like Spiderman and Bassong.
Sure there was a austerity plan in place, but who is to say the program would`nt come to fruition
over time, look at Wigan and others who identified and signed talented players fairly cheaply.
Would you really prefer that the club go out and sign players like man U. (who are leveraged to the tune of 660 m.)
Reading the fans expectations during the transfer window was an exercise in either optomism or delusion, there were never any chance of spending big.
Unfortunately that was never communicated to the fans, bad PR.

  • 36 beyethegreat // Oct 9, 2008 at 18:04

just wondering is anyone thinking about new protests or is this a load of bull

    http://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/2008/10/08/newcastle-fans-turn-up-the-heat-on-mike-ashley-115875-20783984/

  • 37 chuck // Oct 9, 2008 at 18:11

Dont you think theres been enough damage done through protesting.
What this club needs is a little sanity ,a peiod of calm and reflection, not more turmoil.

  • 38 shearer9 // Oct 9, 2008 at 18:16

I don’t think the protests outside the ground made any difference anyway, apart from letting Mike Ashley and Co know just how much people hate them.
I think he wanted to sell the club anyway, he wasn’t bothered about the fans when he chose his mates over Keegan, so I doubt he changed his mind when he seen the protests.
He’s probably been looking for a buyer since the day he bought us.

  • 39 Paul // Oct 9, 2008 at 18:18

The worky tickets will just put potential purchasers off even more, then they’ll be stuck with Ashley :-).

  • 40 beyethegreat // Oct 9, 2008 at 18:25

i would agree what is the point in protesting now it would be pointless ashley has agreed to sell and if there were people protesting it would have an adverse effect on the team

  • 41 TOONPIPES // Oct 9, 2008 at 18:26

Dumb protests will achieve nowt except more damage than they have already caused. . Leave the club to re-group, we are in terrible times, we shud be sticking together, MA selling now is last thing we want (both cos I think he wud have come good) but cos if something goes worng, if money drains somewhere, somone cannot commit during any takeover, there will be no+ne to ‘hold the baby’ and our beloved club will fall. . Leave your protests we all know you don’t ustand what MA was trying to do + that you think a 12 year old keegan can run the entire club on his own, honestly blo ody bedsheeters + brickwalls

  • 42 Big Dave // Oct 9, 2008 at 18:30

NUFutureCowboy @17 I think the reason for (JK ) picking the players spirits up in a week is more to do with the way KK had allready built the players up before he left when KK came he near enough had to teach them how to play football again after the way BSA had left them

  • 43 Dan13 // Oct 9, 2008 at 18:34

Charver tramps using this as an excuse to kick off.
    A hate them!
They give us Geordies a bad name

  • 44 irish_al // Oct 9, 2008 at 18:36

The arsenal model- are we refering to the Arsenal of today or the Arsenal when Arsene Wenger took over from Bruce Rioch?

surely if we are to follow the model it would be from the start, at this point Arsenal had a core of more accomplished and experianced players, (off the top of my head so i may be wrong on some) they had Seaman in nets, Dixon, Adams, Keown, Winterburn, (campbell?), Platt, Merson, up front they had Bergkamp and Wright

In the early years there was a mixture of established players brought in (Remi Garde, Manu Petit, Marc Overmars) and younger players brought in that could still make an impact (Nicholas Anelka, patrick Viera, Luis Boa Morte) with not many youngsters coming through (apart from Stephen Hughes i can’t memember many)

What Arsene Wenger did was make sure the foundations were firstly clearly layed, rock steady

Unfortunately we seem to have neglected this and attemped to build on sand

  • 45 Big Dave // Oct 9, 2008 at 18:37

    hows you young Dan

  • 46 Alex // Oct 9, 2008 at 18:37

Why does so many people on here not want Jk to stay ? If he gets the job full time its because he will have done a great job . That’s what we all want , the job well done and the early signs are he is doing just that . Lets not forget that it is still quiet early in the season and a good run can quickly put us into the mix for uefa cup places . Jk inherited the same players that got a draw at Old trafford and i am sure he can motivate them as well as Keegan did . I also think after watching the Everton game that Jk is more tacticly astute than KK . If JK can prove in the next few games that he can do a job then lets keep him , the last thing the players need is yet more upheaval .

  • 47 Big Dave // Oct 9, 2008 at 18:43

irish_al totally agree with that, you need to have a well established team at the start to make it work and as you stated the players there when arse came in were allready well known internationals. so arse gradually over a LONG period of time was able to add young up and coming players

  • 48 Ally // Oct 9, 2008 at 18:43

Alex i agree with you mate i think the world of JK for taking the challenge and hopefully he will do a great job, nd he has started fantastically well long may it continue! the least a good run will do is improve his chances of getting our job, or more likely a good job at another club

  • 49 Dan13 // Oct 9, 2008 at 18:59

    An champion, you Dave?

  • 50 Big Dave // Oct 9, 2008 at 19:24

Im good Dan I havn’t been on much this week has nando been on trying to wind u up mate, or is he keeping a low profile cause spuds is at the bottom, where you at the everton game or did you watch it ? what did you think m8 we played a bit better

  • 51 daydeburt // Oct 9, 2008 at 19:34

some people on here are crazy, for example joe kinnears doing a great job..blah..blah hes just talking and telling players what theyve all heard before, win your personal battles, get the ball down and play, keep the ball moving, close players down in the right areas…blah blah. its only 1 game man, when will we ever learn. 1 average performance and were class, a crap performance and sack the manager,!! what we need is new owners with a new direction and a new settle manager who has tactical no how and has 5 years to build a team, and buys his own players and own style.

  • 52 daydeburt // Oct 9, 2008 at 19:39

dream scenario, weathly men takeover (not crazy rich) but enough. bring in a decent manager bruce, phil brown, van gaal, gus hiddink any of them would do me. give him 50 million in january, or around that, as its hard to attract players mid season. get a playmaker, centre forward, left back and centre half, and then back him again in the summer. and finally give him 5 years to let him mould a decent attacking side, dont mind if we dont win anything, i just want to be proud of my team again and slightly entertained!!,

  • 53 Turkish magpie // Oct 9, 2008 at 19:53

@ ganiyu we dont need a right winger!

    Duff
    Jonas
    Geremi
    Barton(can play there)
    Gonzalez (can play there)
and most of all Jonas again ~!!!!~

  • 54 Nick 69 // Oct 9, 2008 at 20:02

course we need another right winger, we only have jonas who is any gud on the right, geremi is sh*t, duff is not a right winger, neither is barton and neither is guthrie, you can say they can play ther all you want but you dont want players playing in positions which arent going to get the best out of them

  • 55 Big Dave // Oct 9, 2008 at 20:04

daydeburt @ 52 only problem is will he get 5yrs mate

  • 56 Dan13 // Oct 9, 2008 at 20:58

Big Dave, nah a couldn’t watch it, box went bust:(
Nah coast has been clear of Nando lately, fingers crossed eh?
Anyways you going to man city game?

  • 57 Alex // Oct 9, 2008 at 21:04

Daydeburt this team has not been together all that long . Kinnear has at least brought a small amount of stability to the squad . If the Everton game is the start of a good run then whats the problem with giving Kinnear a 5 year stint at developing the squad ? if you saw the game you must have realised that Joe does have tactical awareness or were you not entertained second half ?

  • 58 Big Dave // Oct 9, 2008 at 21:04

Dan you do know that you can watch it on the pc mate. and no mate i wont be at the city game and living in Northern Ireland i usually only get to see 2 live games a yr when me and the bro go to the liverpool home and away game as he is a liverpool fan lol.

  • 59 It Could Be Worse, We Could Be Spurs! (DC) // Oct 9, 2008 at 21:09

You don’t really expect Nando to be on here ATM do you? Things were looking pretty cheery for them at the beginning of the season, I even had to share a pub with them as they beat Roma like 7-1 in a warm-up. Now we’ve not had the best of starts but we have done better than those slimy Spuds, so no Nando nor any of his cronies & alias b/c remember as bad as our current situation is…it could always be worse….LMFAO @ Spurs!

  • 60 Dan13 // Oct 9, 2008 at 21:19

lol yeah ave got all the rubbish for pc like sopcast etc, but none of links on sunday didn’t seem o work for me :(
    Oooh
This is quite sick, me auntie has bought me a ticket for the middlesborough vs chelsea match at Riverside next saturday because my mam told her I liked Chelsea, and with her boyfriend supporting them she’s taking me!
The only thing I really like about Chelsea is their strip, So I guess I have to go otherwise it would be really ungrateful lol.
    Suppose it’ll be a laugh

  • 61 Big Dave // Oct 9, 2008 at 21:27

Dan sure you might as well go watch them getting whipped with your toon top on mate lol

  • 62 Dan13 // Oct 9, 2008 at 21:30

    Haha, might as well like!
A hate the smoggies more than sunderland at times.

  • 63 LP_6 // Oct 10, 2008 at 10:07

I’m not getting carried away just yet with kinnear! he might do a good job, but he has been out of the game as long as keegan has so who would he want to sign! Some people have short memories! glenn roeder done a decent job as caretaker/interim manager and everyone was singing his name! but he was poor in the transfer market! And then people were chanting for his sacking! what makes people think a big name foreign gaffa would work, just look at the mess in cockneyland wit spurs.

  • 64 Sav // Oct 10, 2008 at 10:22

If JFK can put a rocket up Shola’s jaxi big enough to motivate him to bully defenders around like Fash, he should be hired permanently.
But until then, I’d have to question Joe’s player-assessment abilities.
