News today that injury prone Mark Viduka could be out for a minimum of six months with his Achilles tendon injury, if the injury forces him to have an operation to fix it.
Mark Viduka - out 6 months if Achilles operation needed
If Mark does need an operation then a minimum of 6 months will probably not see him return this season, so he will not have played at all.
And whoever gave the medical opinion last May that an injection would do the trick was plain wrong, because Mark could have had the operation and recuperated over the summer, and been fit a lot sooner.
Mark has always had injury problems and last season he only played in 28 games (21 starts) and scored 7 goals. When he was in the side he definitely made a difference, but if you’re always injured you cannot be much help to your employers.
Kinnear told the Evening Chronicle today:
“Mark Viduka has had one scan on his injury, but he wanted a second opinion and so too did our medical people. That is why he has gone back to Australia.”
“However, we know there is a chance Viduka may need surgery– and if this turns out to be the case we will be without his services for a minimum of six months. This is not good news.”
“We will know more when Viduka comes back in about six days’ time, and in the meantime all we can do is wait and hope.”
One thing that seems certain is that Newcastle will not take up their option of a third year with the Australian. We understand that Mark has a similar contract to Claudio Cacapa - a two year deal with an option for a third year.
We don’t think either player will be at the club next season.
Let us know what you think about this.
Comments welcome.

Aaron Spear
Which team is he playing for then I am struggling to find any information on how he is doing. Obviously when you are tipped to be the next Wayne Rooney people want to take an interest. Is he playing for the U16’s?

just when you thought the most injury prone player at newcastle was owen….

Aaron Spear is moving back to Plymouth, i spoke to him on msn last night, it sounds like he doesn’t want to play football professionally.
Cacapa should have his contract extended as should Viduka if he can prove his fitness.

Gutted about Viduka - he set up some fantastic goals and made us impossible to defend against with Owen and Martins either side of him.
Perhaps Xisco can step into those shoes, but apart from Heskey (who comes close.. sometimes), I don’t know of anyone who can do what Viduka does.
Such a shame - looks like it’s back to 4-4-2 and relying on wingers… but we have got some great wingers…

Tom-Toon.Viduka has proved his fitness-basically he`s not!!!!!!
He can play 4 games a season and maybe should have a contract like “Pay when you Play”
Hasn`t been worth the money at all.Good player if fit but never is so whats the point in keeping him on the books

Viduka is good but too old for the premier league

He should have been replaced last summer and everyone knows it. This was always going to be his last season as he is definately past it.
Once again we keep a player whos costing us in excess of £60k a week and produces absolutely nothing in return for that outlay. It must be the best jolly under the sun.

This is a sad news because he is one of my favourite players at the club, so to have him out for probably another 6 months is pretty bad. He has already shown us what he can do when he is fit but unfortunately, it looks likely that he is unable to continue doing what he has previously done. I think it is for his and our own good that he leave the club when his contract expire so that maybe he could go back to Australia and join one of the teams there. But I still wish him a speedy recovery and I really hope to see him playing for us before the season end.
21 Marat18 // Oct 9, 2008 at 17:18
that leaves us with Ameobi being our only targetman. not much of an option, tbh.
I know lot of people hates this “fantasy team talks”, but I’d go for Derdiouk (spelling?) in January as a replacement, more likely his team will be out from CL in December, so we can get him.
but the whole club has to be sorted out first
22 Tom_Toon // Oct 9, 2008 at 18:15
Kalinic as a replacement or Pogrebnyak who’s contract runs out in the summer.
23 Toon_Ksk // Oct 9, 2008 at 18:52
It is time for him to retire or the club to release him. Hopeless guy. The A-League will welcome him with a pension plan.
24 Southern Geordie // Oct 9, 2008 at 20:27
Sack him off - if the club is to go forward we need to get rid of dead wood and. Sounds ruthless but to many part-timers have come here in the past. We need someone who can string more than 90mins together
25 Brutooooon // Oct 10, 2008 at 0:09
viduka go retired….we can buy a new striker in january. young fitter and not injury prone. remember viduka is an old lad, therefore waiting for him is totally useless…
find younger striker, but i do believe xisco will be a big hit when he settle in england
26 Matt // Oct 10, 2008 at 1:51
whats all this aaron spear crap?
viduka should never have been signed in the first place. another bad buy by sam.
27 gorskino10 // Oct 10, 2008 at 9:54
I think hes passed it for us hes too lazy for our team maybe for Wigan or a team like that he would be great.
28 LP_6 // Oct 10, 2008 at 10:10
get rid! he’s work shy and just happy to collect his enormous wages
29 samthecat // Oct 10, 2008 at 10:26
If he had had this operation in April when it was clearly needed he would now be ready to play.
The club were told it wasnt needed-we get some crap medical advice.

This really isn’t a surprise.
