The News Of The World is reporting today that Mike Ashley is ready to call it a truce in his battle with Keegan.
Kevin Keegan - receiving £2M compensation from Ashley?
Keegan has taken legal action because of his unfair dismissal at the club, and Sport of the World is reporting today that Kevin Keegan will be given £2M compensation he has sought, following his unexpected exit from Newcastle.
If this is true, we wonder why Ashley is suddenly doing this? We hope it’s not to try to patch things up with Newcastle fans, because he sees himself staying longer, in order to get a decent price for the club.
The departure this week of Vice-President Tony Jimenez, who seems likely to join Spurs, is a step towards breaking up the group that seemed to mislead Keegan.
If Mike really wants to patch things up with the fans, he should start by dismissing Llambias and Wise, who were the two guys reportedly planning to bring in players behind Kevin’s back.
But he’ll not do that, because if he was going to do that, he would have done that in early September, and Kevin would never have walked. It’s a mistake Mike cannot recover from.
Another interesting potential reason why Mike is cleaning up things with Keegan is that Mike has a buyer, and the new owners would demand that a truce be made with Keegan.
They may even be prepared to give Mike the money to settle with Kevin, especially if Kevin was going to be the new manager.
Just a thought, but there’s at least a little logic behind it.
Comments welcome.

Really cant see us being sound in the near future. I feel we better get used to Ashley being hear and strap our selves in for a sh*t storm of a ride

Wow, how horrible of MA to try and patch it up with Keegan - let’s use it against him!

jimenez gone and now if these reports are true Keegan getting compensation . If ashley is clearing out the management team to make it easier for a new owner then a real bid must have been made . Maybe wise gone before the end of the week ? here’s hoping

Am i the only one who is adamant Keegan should not return once this mess is sorted out.
We really do need to move on from Keegan for the sake of the clubs future.

@ JonasIsGod
are you crazy lol
we did move on from Keegan, we moved on from Keegan for about ten whole years and god knows how many high profile managers, we moved on from Keegan and look at what it got us, our only hope of success in the near future is under Keegan.
Keegan must return, once he does I immediately go out and buy new Newcastle shirts for my family and start watching the games again.
Most of the fans know it, Keegan knows it, most pundits know it, hell even Mike Ashley probably knows it now, Keegan is our only hope for the time being.
Tell me please of any other manager who is A: better than Keegan and B: willing to come to Newcastle united.
Keegan is willing to return, we need to secure him long-term and give him what he wants, otherwise I really can see us playing 1st division football next season.

I think that if it’s true, then it has more to with the selling of the club, than it has with keeping fans happy. While personally I would love to see Kevin back I know a lot of fans who now think its time for a fresh start? Still if it is a prospective buyer wanting to clear the way for a Keegan return, it suggests that they and Ashley may be close to an agreed selling price, whatever that is.

An employee can’t claim constructive dismissal if they haven’t been employed for a continuous period of a least 12 months, therefore Keegan doesn’t have a leg to stand on legally.
10 Swalwell // Oct 12, 2008 at 12:20
An employee cannot claim unfair dismissal until after a year. He can claim wrongful dismissal at any time.

hope kk gets ees compo, then walks back in and takes up the reins at the toon.
that would be a nice kick in the plums for fatty arbuckle.
12 Matthew Tom // Oct 12, 2008 at 12:32
Paul
You need 12 months service to claim unfair dismissal, but constructive dismissal can happen at any time.
It is nothing more than a resignation in response to a fundamental breach of contract by the employer (e.g. breaching mutual trust and confidence by bringing in players without your approval). In the circumstances even though the employee resigns, it is treated in law as a dismissal by the employer.
Unfair dismissal is of limited use to Keegan, because in standard situations you can only get £63,000 compensation for unfair dismissal.
However from a purely contractual point of view if Keegan is constructively dismissed, he can claim payment of damages for breach of contract for the unexpired period left on his contract.

Worst comes to worst I might go to their box office tomorrow?!
16 jules // Oct 12, 2008 at 12:45
Keegan will not work with anyone else especially if he sees a connection with Ashley
17 jules // Oct 12, 2008 at 12:46
With regard to KK rejoining NUFC, I would be a little unhappy if he had £2m out of what would probably be our tranfer fund and then rejoining. Would seem a pretty mercenary move to me.
18 Alex // Oct 12, 2008 at 12:47
Doubt that would work KK &Jk they would both want the final say in things . That is why shearer did not take KK offer to be assistant . All 3 of those guys are too strong minded to be assistant managers . I would like JK to stay as manager with his own back room staff the team needs stability not more change
19 Paul // Oct 12, 2008 at 12:50
skin d, Keegan isn’t suing Ashley, he’s suing NUFC, and he knows that he has little chance if it ever comes to court. If he gets his payout in an out of court settlement, he’ll be kicking the club that he supposedly loves in the plums as well, not just Ashley. No potential NUFC buyer in his right mind would take him on again after that.

22 Paul // Oct 12, 2008 at 13:04
Matthew Tom, er no. You have to be employed for 12 months for contructive dismissal. There are some exceptions, eg discrimination. However they don’t really apply in Keegans case.

Some of the comments on here are juvenile. I guess that they are from juveniles or Makems trying to stir thing up.

KK, The Messiah, Mr. wonderfull, Greatest manager ever.
Theres a lot of self delusion out there.
Truth is he is a petulent, my way or the highway mediocre manager, who lacks a tactical knowledge of the modern game, knows very little about the transfer market and in general is a liability, as he was at Man. C.,England, etc.
Wake up folks, the mans broke, could`nt even run a circus (not talking about NUFC) should never have been resurected, let him go !

42 Paul // Oct 12, 2008 at 17:49
skin d, well if you want to see Newcastle been made less desirable to a potential investor, with it’s fortunes dictated by an ex manager with a grudge, that’s up to you. Personally, I think that the fortunes of Newcastle United are more important than than the fortunes of Keegan’s soccer circus (the one in Glasgow, not the new one he has made on Tyneside).
DarkStar, is that really the best that your intellect can muster?
43 Paul // Oct 12, 2008 at 18:01
‘being made’ rather.
44 Fed up Geordie // Oct 12, 2008 at 19:08
DarkStar i ve followed newcastle for over thirty years so i think i ve earned the right to say what i think. Its not a case of turning on kk ,its just a fact the bloke keeps walking away, tell me one job he has stuck? What we need now is stability and kk will never offer that.I agree he was screwed over and i hate Ashley as much as any fan but kk could have gone public, explained to the fans what was happening and stayed for the good of newcastle and the fans. You stick to childish name calling and abuse mate that will get us back to where we belong
45 ExiledGeordie // Oct 12, 2008 at 19:16
KK did an amazing job first time round, they were great days but going back seldom works, just look at the likes of Kendal going back to Everton.Keegan has the right to sue if thats what he thinks is right but to me its just more trouble brought to a very troubled club.Keegans time is over s much as Ashleys is,we need new owners and an experienced manager with european experience and a sound tactical knowledge which is what Keegan lacked
46 Big Dave // Oct 12, 2008 at 19:23
Hi Lads and lasses my take on it is that KK would have an instant impact. any other manager is going to come in ( that would want to come to the Toon) = selling players, buying new players, new backroom staff etc etc. that is going to take a while. I honestly believe that KK could get us back where we should be in about 3 yrs turning us in to everyones 2nd fav team to watch then if he cant take us the extra step to winning then we could get a top manager in. ?? what would your thoughts be on that Fed up Geordie or anyone else
47 Paul // Oct 12, 2008 at 19:25
Fed up Geordie, to be fair, Keegan can’t really say too much about it before his compensation claim against the club, and of course there may be a confidentiality clause in his contract. The same is true with Ashley regarding the legal proceedings. Keegan is probably going for out of court settlement as he stands a slim chance if it goes before the court.
48 Paul // Oct 12, 2008 at 19:57
Big Dave, with all due respect, did he make Manchester City everyone’s favourite second team? He had to spend like a premiership club to get Fulham promoted, and England completely bombed under him. I think that even Keegan recognised that he was once again “too short” for the job when he saw Arsenal. That’s when Keegan sought legal advice to plan an escape from the club. There is no ’special magic’ that suddenly turns Keegan into a world class manager when he walks through the gates of St James’ Park, he’s a journeyman manager who thought he could be a Trappatoni after a very well financed spell of ‘beginners luck’ at St James’. He has been chasing that moment ever since, and met with crashing disappointment every time.
49 Jinky Jim // Oct 12, 2008 at 20:12
Fek kk! if he returns he will surely do another runner. He,s done more runners than me from a curry house on a Friday night.
50 Big Dave // Oct 12, 2008 at 20:35
Paul I see your point mate but i just dont think Man city or Fulham have the same potental as the Toon. but i most be just an old romantic when it comes to KK lol
51 Paul // Oct 12, 2008 at 22:21
Big Dave, I know what you mean too about the romanticism too, however I had a feeling that something bad was going to happen when Ashley brought back Keegan. He also left Man City when he realised that they weren’t going to spend like Real Madrid and drive the club bankrupt buying older players such as Robbie Fowler with no resale value, and he was left merely with his own tactical acumen and boring things like a good youth policy. Both Newcastle and Man city are large clubs with great potential, however Man city doesn’t have the turbulent, destabilising fans, and the turbulent, destabilising ex manager that Newcastle have. Hence they have much more potential for investors than Newcastle, which can go off like a bomb in their hands at any minute. Now that the game is more about tv money and international merchandising rather than bodies through the turnstiles, Fulham could have a bit of potential too in the right hands!

lately there has been far too many mike ashley arse lickers, and they seem oblivious to the lies that have been told.
well i for one applaud Keegan for walking, and any of us would do the same if we were in his position.
so please put away the knives that some of you have out for Keegan, and show the man some fecking respect.
54 Fed up Geordie // Oct 13, 2008 at 6:35
Nobody has the knifes out for KK DarkStar ,we all just want is best for newcastle and more and more people are starting to think its time for a fresh start. That does nt make us pro Ashley,i for one hate the man for what he is doing to our club.KK is a legend but going back to a club seldom if ever works and even you cant argue that whatever the reasons he never sticks it out anywhere and tactically he is poor.Football at the top level has moved on since the glory days of his first spell and i think its time we did to.
55 graeme // Oct 13, 2008 at 8:01
Sorry guys, but Keegan has proved time and again that he ISNT a special manager in any way. What he is, is a superb motivator of players, he gives them self belief, he gives them fire and drive.
That makes him a great coach, unfortunately, thats all he was hired to be at NUFC. He wanted the same position he had under John Hall and FFS, he probably thought its what he had, but all the evidence points to the fact that he was only the coach and he knew it.
Having players imposed on him, was the perfect excuse for him to do his usual “Going gets tough, Keegan gets going” routines. We saw it here, we have seen it at Fulham, Man City, England and now here again. His time has been and gone.
The club needs a clean slate. New owners, new manager, no baggage.
56 Ausgeordie // Oct 13, 2008 at 8:09
I’m with you graeme. I’d hate to see the owners appoint keegan partly because he walked out on players he did sign and the club but also because it might set an unhealthy trend that owners will come and go with every crisis.
This is not what we want and Ashleys handling of Newcastle is an exception due to his corporate structure, lack of investment in transfers etc. I think Newcastle fans are probably one of the few in the world that could force an owner out and thats a good thing but lets not try and do it next season when the geordie drama kicks in.
57 Paul // Oct 13, 2008 at 11:27
“Newcastle fans are probably one of the few in the world that could force an owner out and thats a good thing”.
Er are you sure about that Ausgeordie? Not many owners are stupid enough to invest in a club where they might be driven out as a “distressed seller” every time some unfounded tittle-tattle appears in the tabloids. Would you?
58 lesh // Oct 14, 2008 at 8:24
Let’s be optimistic and hope Ashley’s getting rid of anyy baggage that might get in the way of a sale?
