High Hopes For 17 Year-Old Nile Ranger

October 13th, 2008 · 49 Comments

Newcastle United interim manager Joe Kinnear has today backed 17 year-old striker Nile Ranger to have a bright future at Newcastle.

Nile Ranger - in tremendous goal scoring form

Ranger was signed rather quietly from Southampton during the summer, and he has settled in well at Newcastle, and has certainly been scoring the goals in the Reserves and the youth team.

Joe Kinnear watched Ranger in action against Blackburn Rovers Reserves recently and Nile scored his first ever goal for the club. Ranger also scored twice for our Academy last week and of course his terrific goal at Wigan Athletic.

Kinnear is keeping tabs on the very promising youngster as he told the Chronicl:

“He put in a great performance the other day for the reserves.”

“He has been great in training as well – he is certainly one for the future, and he is making rapid progress.”

“Chris Hughton told me before that he can have a bright future, and after seeing him in training I agree.”

Kinnear nurtured lots of youngsters at Wimbledon with the likes of Warren Barton, John Scales, Robbie Earle and Dean Holdsworth, so he knows how to handle the youngsters.

Kinnear is now looking for consistency from the 17 year-old:

“He must keep his feet firmly on the ground.

“But if he keeps on making rapid progress, we could have a very good player on our hands.”

We’ll be keeping an eye on Nile, and he’s yet another great youngster we’ve brought into the club this year, and it will be very important that Newcastle continues their youth poicy under the new owner.

Comments welcome.

have we got to many strikers for him to break through
    owen
    martins
    viduka
    ameobi
    smith
    carroll

  • 2 qemin // Oct 13, 2008 at 14:45

i’ll cancel viduka off the list mate. he has no leg to play. poor vids.

  • 3 beyethegreat // Oct 13, 2008 at 14:45

has any one seen him play
if so what is his potential is it similar to owen or similar to ameobi

  • 4 MattyDread // Oct 13, 2008 at 14:50

He scored a cracking goal for the stiffs against Blackburn.

This is an interview with Steve Harper but it shows Nile’s goal. Very well taken.

  • 5 MattyDread // Oct 13, 2008 at 14:52

beyethegreat - I’m not sure that’s the case, he’s already made the bench. There’s no reason why he shouldn’t break through when we have such an injury prone / under performing bunch of strikers.

  • 6 Paul // Oct 13, 2008 at 14:57

Poor Southhampton are like we used to be in the days of Waddle, Pedro, Gascoigne etc. They’ve had great players like Crouch, Walcott, Bale etc then they have to feed them all to the big boys before they have the chance to lift the team. Let’s hope that Nile Ranger is another one!

  • 7 M. Stockley // Oct 13, 2008 at 15:04

off subject but have people had their man city tickets yet?

  • 8 Toony Montana // Oct 13, 2008 at 15:10

I think Southampton released him - dont quote me on this but I am sure he spent some time this summer at her majesty’s pleasure.

  • 9 Ageordiedoonsooth // Oct 13, 2008 at 15:12

I live not far from Southampton & knowaw few Saints supporters I’ve heard he has an attitude problem. That’s why they let him go. Does anyone know what happened to Aaron Spears from Plymouth

  • 10 Tom_Toon // Oct 13, 2008 at 15:12

Toony - Yes they released him because he got arrested for shoplifting I think and we knicked him when he was on trial at Swindon.

  • 11 beyethegreat // Oct 13, 2008 at 15:13

toony if that is true then it looks like we have thugs coming through at every level

    barton(first team)
    carroll(reserves and first team fringe)
    ranger(reserves)

  • 12 Tom_Toon // Oct 13, 2008 at 15:14

Aaron Spear did sign for us but wants to go back to Plymouth now and probably will be leaving us very, very soon. He is actually debating whether to continue the path to professional football and he doesn’t like it too much.

  • 13 cam_toon // Oct 13, 2008 at 15:14

Lets face it.. Smith and Vids, and Prob Shola will be out shortly.

  • 14 Toony Montana // Oct 13, 2008 at 15:22

  • 16 Manyanga // Oct 13, 2008 at 15:32

See link below - Nile doesn’t lack confidence or skills in self-publicity. The video ‘Messing round wiv Lyrical’ shows him signing on at NUFC. See and hear him at http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=120797284

If Kinnear has problems with the Spaniards, how will he manage with Nilos. Anyone like to translate?

  • 17 Marty-TOON RISING // Oct 13, 2008 at 15:51

You can strike Viduka and Smith off the striker list, they won`t be playing very much.
Tis lad looks about Shola`s size or will be and has a lot more technique and speed.
Why not give him and Zamblera a run out near the end of some games for experience.
Rooney started out young in the first team,do we at NUFC have to wait till they are 22 or so????????

  • 18 broon ale // Oct 13, 2008 at 16:03

ranger is quality, i have seen a few reserve games this season. he was brilliant in our defeat against the mackems.
tom-toon. where on earth did you hear that about spears?

  • 19 Davies // Oct 13, 2008 at 16:05

I’ve seen his MySpace page (somebody put the link on here before) and he looks like a prize tosser. A bit of a bling boy, thinks he’s a gangsta.

Still, if he can score goals and stay out of jail, I really don’t care that much.

  • 20 newcastle29 // Oct 13, 2008 at 16:11

    @beyethegreat // Oct 13, 2008 at 14:42

have we got to many strikers for him to break through

owen = a chance he will go
    martins
viduka = knacked might play for us again.
ameobi = useless and will go.
smith = done nowt since he has been with us.
carroll = hopefully will make it.

so i would say he has a good chance of breaking through.

  • 21 ToonRich // Oct 13, 2008 at 16:14

I heard of Ranger last season before his trouble with the shop lifting. He seemed like one for the future then, and he still looks good now imo… To be fair, I dont think the trouble was only him and it could have been down to pressure from the other lads for him to play up like he did off the field. Hope he keeps his head down as I’d like to see him get a few first team mins underr his belt.

  • 22 ryan peacock // Oct 13, 2008 at 16:22

looks quality! hope he gets a chance in the next two or three games.

  • 23 Born Again Geordie // Oct 13, 2008 at 16:33

Slightly off subject but on saturday afternoon I saw Aaron Spear and looked like Ameobi’s brother in TK Maxx in the toon. So looks like young spear is here after all !

  • 24 Will // Oct 13, 2008 at 16:41

    canny goal!

  • 25 Tom // Oct 13, 2008 at 16:43

  • 32 neeraj // Oct 13, 2008 at 18:07

owen- most probably going in jan
    martins
viduka- would love to watch him play again
    ameobi- needless to comment
    smith- striker?????
    carroll- never seen him play
xisco- looks good, needs time to settle

so it’s 2 or 3 strikers who are ahead of him or would be ahead of him in jan

  • 33 Turkish magpie // Oct 13, 2008 at 18:34

    Beyethegreat

    u missed out xisco

  • 35 Rich // Oct 13, 2008 at 18:46

could JK be an inspired choice of coach by MA?

Are the players picked by the board quality…

Does the club have any major debts…

  • 36 cause I got the girth // Oct 13, 2008 at 18:59

WISE OUT!!! ohh hang on……he signed him!! errrrrrrrrr !?!?!?!?!
p.s. his my space made me shout out YEAH like i was in the background of a 50 cent song!

  • 37 Az // Oct 13, 2008 at 19:43

Not having a go at you guys but I wish you would stop taking the pi$$ out of Nile because I know him and he reads this site because it looks at reserve games in detail. He also stopped reading Rivals.com as people were laughing at his myspace and how he communicates. Thats how most people are age talk now!

  • 38 Tom_Toon // Oct 13, 2008 at 20:54

  • 39 cause I got the girth // Oct 13, 2008 at 21:07

if someone went on to my myspace and took the mick out of my billy ray cyrus pictures, would go and cry or even worse, expect some hanger on looser to try and stick up for me???? err no! cringe worthy mate, get a life!

  • 40 cause I got the girth // Oct 13, 2008 at 21:09

ps. the word is “our” as in ‘our age’! If that’s how ‘you’ communicate then you need to stop skipping your English lessons!

  • 41 CLINT FLICK // Oct 13, 2008 at 21:12

Nice one Az, ignore it dood.
Nile looks pretty good, it won’t belong before he gets a shot.
Just tell him to keep up the good work man.

  • 42 Tom // Oct 13, 2008 at 21:27

Az, if your a mate of Niles, tell him not to worry. Not everyone appreciates that style of music or talk, but so what, tell him it shouldn’t faze him.

Also tell him that he looks a bloody good footballer, and he could be a star for us in the future if he keeps working as hard as he seems to be!

  • 43 Tom_Toon // Oct 13, 2008 at 22:17

    ,,,

  • 44 Brutooooon // Oct 13, 2008 at 23:08

if ranger, caroll and lua lua were at arsenal, they would definitely given the chance to play oin the first team…

  • 45 Az // Oct 13, 2008 at 23:37

Sorry I left school early, im not the sharpest tool in the box. I only ask because he’s been nothing but complementary about Newcastle fans everytime ive spoke to him even with everything going on there right now.( demonstrations against Ashley ) Don’t worry, he doesn’t let it affect him, he’s working real hard right now. I have told him not to get carried away because he feels ready to make appearances for 1st team off the bench already.

  • 46 none4TOON // Oct 14, 2008 at 10:27

decent young strikers coming through, Carroll, Baheng, Zamblera, Ranger all have a bit of potential (but definitely not 1st team material at least for now). however at the moment the midfield is the weakest link by far and there’s no decent young players in that compartment except the half-decent LuaLua …

  • 47 skin d // Oct 14, 2008 at 10:51

my opinion has always been,if your good enough your old enough, couldn,t do any worse than bambi on ice.
give him a 20 minute run out next monday.

  • 48 huggy simpson // Oct 31, 2008 at 12:37

are you really sure aaron spear is homesick and if he does go wouldnt we be entitled to compensation?

  • 49 jimmy // Dec 14, 2008 at 23:04

i went to school with nile and used to know him, im one year younger than him and im pretty sure he got kicked out before he took his GCSEs, spent some time in youth offenders, i think for shopliftin and robbin people but maybe he’ll get it right with the footie.

Dr. Ed Harrison is a retired IBM Consulting Group Executive who now has time, and lots of it, after 34 years at the American computer company, to write about his lifelong passion - Newcastle United Football Club.

Ed was born and bred in Newcastle Upon Tyne, and watched his first game at St. James’ Park in 1949 as a 4 year-old with his Mother and Father. He was told to look out for number 9 - Jackie Milburn – the great Wor Jackie - and was he fast!

In football terms Ed was a goalkeeper and played for Wharrier Street Primary School and Newcastle Minors (Newcastle Schoolboys Under-11), in 1956 and went on to play for Newcastle Schoolboys and Northumberland Schoolboys (Under-15) in 1959 and an England Schoolboys trial.

He was at Newcastle United for a couple of years from 1960 as an amateur, while still at school, and played with Bobby Moncur and David Craig, amongst others, for the Newcastle United Under-18 side (Newcastle N’s in those days), during the relegation season of 1960-1961.

Ed attended Heaton Technical and Manor Park schools, and then went on to study at both King’s College, London (BSc Electrical Engineering) and Newcastle University (PhD Computer Science). He played for Newcastle Universities and England Universities from 1967 until 1970.

But a short couple of years after Ed joined IBM in 1970, he was shipped over to the USA, with his new wife Madeline, a beautiful local Newcastle lassie.

At IBM Ed was in computer systems and network design for 34 years, and in his last 10 years at the company was persuaded to enter executive management. where he ended up running IBM's Americas' Network Consulting Group for 5 years from the late 1990s, and was instrumental in forming the IBM alliance with Cisco Systems in 1999.

Ed and Madeline live just outside Raleigh in North Carolina. Their twin sons Paul and Neil, and daughter Elaine, are now in their early 30s, live close by, and Neil has carried on the family tradition by becoming an avid Newcastle United supporter.

And one final thing that is so true - you can take the boy out of Newcastle but you can't take Newcastle out of the boy!

    Howay The Lads!!
