Given Impressed With Trapattoni and Kinnear

October 13th, 2008 · 66 Comments

Shay Given, Newcastle’s top class goalkeeper, is quite happy with the two managers he is working under right now at Newcastle and Ireland.

Giovanni Trapattoni - Ireland manager

The 32-year-old Ireland star joined up with his Irish team-mates and Giovanni Trapattoni for their World Cup qualifying game against Cyprus on Wednesday.

And of course at his club side, Joe Kinnear has only just taken over the troubled Newcastle United club. Shay seems pleased and impressed by both his new managers, even though they both have very different backgrounds and styles.

Given said today:

“Joe can be judged on the Everton game – and we got a point.”

“It’s a turbulent time at the club and Joe is only in for a couple of months, so he wants to get as many points and results as possible.”

“We have got to give him credit for coming up to the club when it’s in a bit of turmoil at the minute to try to get us moving back up the League.”

And Given has also been equally impressed with Italian legend 69 year-old Trapattoni, who has managed Juventus, AC Milan, Inter Milan, Bayern Munich and the Italian National team, amongst others.

Given talked about Trapattoni:

“With his experience, the amount of stuff he’s done in the game, you have ultimate respect for him as soon he walks in that door,”

“What he’s done in the game is phenomenal, and it’s a great coup for us to have him as our manager.”

“It’s given the team a lift, and we have had a good start to the campaign as well.”

Shay is in action on Wednesday evening along with Damien Duff for Ireland at Croke Park, in Dublin, and should be able to register a win in that game against Cyprus.

We just hope both will be fit after that game, because they are both important players for Newcastle in our game next Monday against the tough Manchester City side.

Comments welcome.

all the managers in the PL know that shay is 1 of the best in europe.
Alex Ferguson and Wenger said it about him several times.

if you could pick any manager in the world to come to the toon and that means any 1 from wenger to ferguson who would it be my dream manager would be marcelo lippi

  • 10 reillers // Oct 13, 2008 at 17:35

I’ve been more then a wee bit impressed by Trapa (with the exception, just a tiny exception of the decision with Andy Reid.)
I’m going on Weds night, so God help me it better not be another night like the last few times we’ve played Cyprus.
There’s been a massive improvement in the team, and holding on to the wee lad James McCarthy saying he’ll play for us and not Scotland. But then again anything is better then that dibacle of a “manager”. Delighted with Trapa though.
No more Stan thank mercy and hopefully nothing less then 3 points.

beyethegreat yeah mate but i noticed that keith harris said that we have no debt ( But he added: “In his time of owning it, Mike has cleaned up the balance sheets and Newcastle is one of the few clubs that has no debt whatsoever, so that makes it very attractive to an incoming owner.”

    Wee Hughie gallagher (sp).
Goal machine until the 50’s, probably smaller than Owen but deadly.
Caused the biggest crowd ever at SJP when he came back to play for the chavs.

Not that i remember, it’s folklore.

  • 44 sweendog // Oct 13, 2008 at 22:43

big dave ..cheers .. 7 interested .. all with funds .. the greedy mess gets his wish .. hopefully its sorted out quickly so we can concentrate on the football after nearly 2 months of torture..

Sweendog, you can’t have an all time Newcastle 11 without our greatest ever player, Hughie Gallacher, in the centre forward position!

  • 60 normski1930z // Oct 14, 2008 at 0:17

frank pingal was f**kin quality man i rememeber his first game as sub at sjp…came running on,jumped up for a header the centre half from bradford(i think) nutted him on the back of his head and he went doon like a sack of sh*t got takin off and came back on with a big bandage round his nut and ran around in a daze for the rest of the game…..class that mick havnt heard that name for years..

  • 61 Paul // Oct 14, 2008 at 0:17

I remember some micknufc. Some of them like Rob McDonald and Pinguel only played a few games didn’t they?

  • 63 tom tomb // Oct 14, 2008 at 0:25

Mick NUFC are you kidding man! Why are Pat Heard and Glynn Hodges also Wayne Fereday nowhere near that squad! Apart from that total class mate Hardwick still makes me shiver yet!

  • 64 tom tomb // Oct 14, 2008 at 0:32

Normski same vein mate no anti racists get on my case here. But v the stinking mackems when they had Gayle and Bennett , we had no black players -the geordies sang Hello hello Newcastle are white hello hello . Then Gayle was sent off then Bennett and the lads in the gallowgate sang Hello hello Sunderland are white hello hello. Still laugh yet as we wupped them 3-1.

  • 65 normski1930z // Oct 14, 2008 at 0:34

the one that sticks in my mind more than anything song wise from the time tho is “whoa first division, first division, first division here we come”….memories from the scoreboard and the flag…

  • 66 normski1930z // Oct 14, 2008 at 1:30

    sunderland 1-1 newcastle
    newcastle 2-1 west brom

ryan if you think thats gonna happen put 20 bills on it at the bookies and it comes up,you will get a holiday out of it imo..
