Joe Kinnear is an upbeat and positive guy, and that’s exactly the type of personality we need leading the club right now, in these very difficult circumstances.
Joe Kinnear - I have the ball so I’m in charge
Joe talked to the Evening Chronicle today:
“Having players back has lifted people’s spirits.” “It always does when you have people coming back from injury. People start looking over their shoulder and step it up.”
“The worst thing you can have is no competition. And with these people back now you have players fighting to get into the team.” “So everybody else has been working hard to hold on to the position they are in.”
“People are now competing for the position they play in.” “It’s nice to have top players back in the squad. It adds more quality to the sessions and everybody is now under pressure to hold on to the spot they have had.”
“Everybody has worked hard, people seem happy within themselves and people are expressing themselves.” “The icing on the cake would be to get a good result against Man City and keep that buzz going.”
Kinnear thinks that Nigerian Oba Martins has the best chance of starting the game against Manchester City, but admits that both Beye and Argentine star Gutierrez are also ready to return.
“Oba Martins would be the nearest one to coming straight back, but you have Habib Beye and Jonas Gutierrez, too.” “Spiderman (Gutierrez) is on the verge.”
” It is just whether it is too risky, but he will be ready for Sunderland and so will Joey Barton.“The only two long-term are Smithy (Alan Smith) and Viduka. We’re gradually getting there.” “The rest will also come back from international football having played top-level football.”
“It’s been a pleasing week, but as much as we could have done with a match after Everton it has given us good time to get players back and get quality work from them.” “They have been a joy to work with and I am thoroughly enjoying it. I hope now that we will get something out of Man City.”
It’s so refreshing to hear from a man who just loves his job.
Whatever team Joe picks for Monday night, the big hope is that we can win that game. Joe is very well aware that his tenure at the club is all about results, and the feel-good factor will mean nothing unless we can get those points on the board.
We are really looking forward to the game on Monday night, in what promises to be a crucial game for the players, the fans, and for Joe himself.
Comments welcome.

I like Joe, think he is a good manager and a great motivator however he can’t make a silk purse out of a sows ear!! Give it a few weeks and the cracks will appear and this good feeling will quickly evaporate. I don’t want to sound negative but I feel i’m being realistic.

I like how available Joe has made himself to the public. If anything, it raises my spirits having a man that is so optimistic and involved with the squad.

Fantastic news on the injury front. Keep everyone ready for the Sunderland(spit) match. A win at the unwashed will be the catalyst for the rest of the season.
Yes winning on Monday would be nice, but it’s not the end of the world. However a defeat at Sunderland doesn’t bare thinking about.

You mean it’s nice to have actually have a MANAGER again? I still want KK to return, but Joe’s doing a great job. That Everton draw was one of the toon’s top three performances this year, up there with opening day at OT and the first Carling Cup match.

I like that lineup, but it sounds like Jonas and Beye won’t be risked from the start. That and Xisco is CRAP

NOT CACAPA HE IS AWFUL, play zog left back and bassong in the centre of defence which is his position and one of the most important in any team.
13 Micky Toon // Oct 16, 2008 at 15:41
No to Zog at left back. He has looked awful every time he has played there.
14 The holey grail // Oct 16, 2008 at 15:50
Micky Toon . . so has cacapa every game at the back and the centre of defence is alot more inportant than left back, especially if spiderman plays and then zog will get a lot of help as spidermans work rate id second to non.

Beye*** Taylor********Colocinni***Bassong

Cisco**Martens
Using Guthrie as a DM is a risk but would you rather have Butt(no pun intended) both Geremi and Cacapa are past it, far too slow for a team with the pace of Man C..
If Joe can motivate the midfield to track back as they did against Everton we are in with a chance.
Cisco is also a risk but lets see how he looks, plus he needs game time if he is to be part of the future.
I am sure Beye and Guttierrez can link up well both in defence and going forward, as can the three on the left Bassong , N`Zogbia and Duff.
Certainly going forward and if the two midfielders put an effort into tracking back could be a great game.
You got that Joe !

I don’t think Cacapa is nearly as bad as everyone makes him out to be. He was actually decent in midfield, surely not the reason we lost to West Ham, and has looked alright at CB. Maybe not excellent showings, but HE IS BETTER THERE THAN TAYLOR, WHO CANNOT MARK ON SET PIECES WELL ENOUGH TO PLAY CENTER BACK.
