Oba Martins A Real Asset To Newcastle

Joe Kinnear expects Oba Martins to put some spark into the Newcastle United’s season, as he nears a return to action from his knee injury.

Oba Martins – ready to spark Newcastle’s season?

The Nigerian has been out since suffering a knee injury during last month’s Carling Cup defeat with Spurs, but he is now back in training, and could be on the bench for Monday night’s vital game with Manchester City at home.

Joe wants to see the fiery striker use his “electric legs” to energize the team, after Joe has been observing him in training, and obviously likes what he sees of Oba.

Kinnear told nufcTV from his manager’s office at the Benton training ground today:

“Oba’s like a firework,” “He’s got that fizz, he’s like a rocket and off he goes – electric legs if you like.”

“He’s very pacey and very direct and hungry to score goals and he’s a real asset to us,”

“He looks the type of player you would not enjoy playing against.”

Martins has scored 28 goals in 70 starts for Newcastle since his £10M transfer from Inter Milan in the summer of 2006. He is a very popular player on Tyneside and puts his heart and soul into his football.

With Owen maybe missing the game on Monday night, then if Martins is ready he may even start the game against City.

It’s such an important game for us, but that may be rushing things too much.

Comments very welcome.

He would be even better if he played more often for NUFC. He seems very injury prone, always picking up niggles – andother EMO in the making?? Hope not.

Just want to see him back fully fit and playing every week. We sure could use him on Monday, just hope they dont rush him back and he has another break down!!!

agreed graeme imo he will get a lot better in the years to come (not that he was doing a bad job)i have already noticed this season that he seems to be a lot more inteligent with the ball which was his main weakness he will definately be a legend imo he has everything he can take on a player he is strong has pace has a brilliant shot and though he does not have height he has a leap to make up for it

Totally agree lads – quality player – will only get better and better – but I get the feeling he’s not gonna be with us for long.

We’ll really struggle against City if neither Oba nor Owen are in the starting lineup.

What do you reckon about a Martins & Xisco pairing up front. Xisco has the height and could hold the ball up and play martins through? Or do you think its best to stick with Shola? Is Carrol injured?

beyethegreat – I’m not sure mate. I know he was in bother but I’m not sure if the FA have taken action or are in the process off? According to the link below he’s got a heel injury with no return date.

beyethegreat – yeah its not bad mate – near enough spot on – use it for my FF team but I have to search around nearer the games to fine tune my team choice.

We have so many strikers but not enough reliable ones. Viduka has probably played his last game for us Ameobi and Smith should have been moved out in the last window. Owen we will lose next year though with his injuries its unlikely anyone will pay his wages apart from Man City even if he is on a free. That only leaves us with Martins, Xisco and some other kids. I’d like to see Martins and Xisco together.

When Owen is injured, so long as Oba is fit you feel it doesn’t matter too much. He’s the only one you can say that about right now, until Xisco and Carroll’s careers develop more.

I hope Oba stays with us for many years.

fantastic attitude on and off the field, a hard worker, frightening pace and strength, and a decent finisher too. Really felt for him with the loss of his mam, but if he’s fit again then hopefully he’ll get back to running defences ragged asap. howay the lads.

Sounds good to me Stevo… would there be room for Shola up front as well?

Would it not be a huge help to all our strikers if we had a CF with some stature?

We have a squad full of short arses up front, with no one to play off. Viduka is past it, has been for 18 months, he’s only capable of 45 minutes of footy max; should have been let go at the end of last season.

Edgar still hasnt developed to lead the line and Bambi has had enough second chances and still hant proved he can be the man.

A good target man must surely be a priority in the January window – asuming there is one available!!!

to be honest, i dont know if oba would leave, every time there has been talk in the papers of him jumping ship he’s killed the rumours by saying he’s happy with us.
he seems like one of our squad members who genuinly wants to be with us, wants to help us succeed, hence why our feelings towards him are so strong!

Lesh – I like the idea of the three of them up front mate. That’s if Ameobi supports the two in a wide position but then again that restricts Duff getting down the wing as the midfield would be wide open. Plus I’d prefer to have 4-4-2 so Jonas can run his play making magic in midfield!

richie??? How on earth can you leave nzogbia out of your team after he played so well against everton and has been our most dangerous threat all season???

To anyone who states that xisco should start upfront; i question whether or not you were at the games at home against Hull/Blackburn or you watched the match against west ham! He may have talent , talk a great game and seem like agreat lad; but thus far he has looked nothing short of an average championship striker! I hope he comes good, i really do and i as a nufc supporter will give him every chance to do so; but right now we need established players who know what the EPL is about and therefore i would start with Duff upfront with either Owne/Martins (who both of whom will probably be injured) or Shola (as he began to resemble a footballer again v everton; though it did bring a wry smile to my face when the fans began shouting “Is shola scores were on the pitch” at goodison) I say this about shola purely on the basis that JK has been working with him in training and i believe JK may actually get something out of Shola by giving him the confidence and belief he has clearly been lacking for some time!

For the Man City game I reckon it all depends on our defending. If the back four put a solid performance in I reckon we could hit the b**strds on the break. I got no doubts on Martins banging a few away as long as he gets the delivery.

I reckon Oba should grow some big fat dreads like Larsson had so he can whip defenders eyes out when being challenged in the air or when turning on the ball. Fecking have some o’that!

I told this facts from day one, martins is BETTER than michael owen!

    because:
-he got the no 9 shirt
    -he is faster
-he can shoot with both feet…(power shooting not placing shooting)
    -he is younger than owen
-imagine any of the four top BPL team if martin were to join them – scary meh
-a player who pay football because of the BALL not the money!

Really hope Oba stays, nobody else gets me off my chair like he does. I felt the same way about Robert, and was sad to see him go. His injuries/recovery times are a little odd though. If FYEO is enough to keep him here, then that works for me:)

Maybe this is all part of his treatment daydeburt. It is well known that if you can get the increase the blood flow in certain regions, this can be a poweful aid to recovery ;-).
