Kinnear To Choose New Newcastle Captain

Joe Kinnear will decide over the weekend who will lead out the team, in his home debut as manager of Newcastle United on Monday evening.

Nicky Butt – captain for Monday night?

Newcastle will be without Michael Owen for at least this game, and maybe even the Sunderland game. after he picked up a groin strain in Wednesday’s training.

Shay Given and Nicky Butt are two that could be in line for the job, and we’d be surprised if Butt is not given the nod (excuse the pun), but Joe certainly has enough contenders for the job, that’s for sure.

Joe said today:

“I will have to think about a new captain now to replace Michael and that’s in my thoughts at the moment,”

“We’ve got a lot of good pros in our squad there’s no shortage of players to choose from.”

Who do you think should take over from Michael?

Let us know – comments always welcome.

I reckon he’ll pick Taylor or Shay, Although my preference is for Habib Beye to be captain once he’s fit and regularly playing.

I’d give it to Taylor for the City match..

    1. Butt has been a bit of a liability of late.
    2. We need someone with a bit of passion.
    3. They need to be an outfield player to get the instructions out.
    4. It will give him a boost in defence, which he is going to need against City.

I’d give it to Shay. Taylor shouldn’t even be in the team given his recent performances, and Butt is only there because Barton isn’t available.

Beye for me, intelligent player, calm under pressure, would lead by example and well respected by players and fans alike. I guess JK will probably start with Taylor @ cb, but i would like to see Bassong alongside Colo, a left, right footed combination giving us good balance in the heart of our defence.

Why not give it to Collocini, he’s played well for us, most other teams have a CB as captain, Chelski, Manc USA etc, so why not let him have a go, it may work out better.. 🙂

I think Colo woudln’t get it because his language skills aren’t great yet. He wouldn’t be able to communicate to the rest of the team as much we would like from a captain.

He’s probably going to pick Butt, as he seems to be the most vocal player, besides Given, and Joe talked about needing vocal players on the pitch a while back.

Nicky Butt has been the most consistant player this season and last!! He works hard in a midfield full of slackers!!
Can anyone honestly say Geremi has played better??
N’Zogbia doesn’t look interested. Barton hasn’t played enough games and needs to prove himself on and off the pitch to be considered for the armband!
    Taylor – Too young
Collocini – Not been here long enough
Shay – Goalkeepers dont cover enough of the pitch to be captain.

For Man City I would like to see Duff or Guthrie get it.

However, prmanently it should be one of: Beye, Barton or Jonas.

Surely it’ll be Shay, the wee lad deserves it, giving it to him every so often like this when Owen’s out shows him that he’s doing a good job, that he’s earned it but at the same time it’s a boost but it’s only for a game or so, for all the fighters of the goalkeepers shouldn’t be captains debates.

fair point ive been impressed so far, but he’s still a bit young to be captain. 2-3 seasons i think he’ll be the best midfielder this club has seen since Rob Lee. needs to control his temperament him and barton should go to counseling together hahaha

people are silly. Jonas? Collocini? Guthrie? None of them are viable candidates, it’ll be butt or given. Given would be easily best bet if it wasnt for the fact he plays in goal. I think butt loses his head too easily to be a good captain, but needs must.

given – no, dont like gk as captain

coloccini – doesnt look confident and poor language skills

taylor – passionate, not in great form, so he’s a maybe

beye – well-respected, experienced, great player. would be an ideal choice for me

butt – shocking form, good experience. i think he will get it, but not sure he should get it

jonas – covers every blade of grass, our best player with the exception of MO, good candidate but i very much doubt he’ll get it

duff – quiet as a mouse, no inspiration, unlikely

guthrie – good example in terms of workrate but too young and inexperienced for me

overall, i want it to be beye, but i cant see it being anyone other than butt

Mark-o, butt has been well below par this season, simple as that. he hasnt got the legs to see out 90 minutes anymore. he’s given the ball away in terrible positions on numerous occasions. seem to remember him costing us a goal through it with either blackburn or spurs.
Guthrie is a hardworking youngster who wants to learn and wants to play for us. The moment barton is back, get him in the mid with guthrie. See if he kept out of trouble and started to get a decent run in the team for us, i’d heavily consider barton for captain. (i’ll wait for the rain of bullets from the anti barton crew! 😉 )

Its unlikely to be someone who has not seen play yet. Butt is the obvious choice but I’d like I’d like to see him subbed as he is slow and low on stamina. It has to be said though it might make him step up his game and if you want someone to have a good game its butt. If he is on song he can break up play in the midfield and do great things. Personally I would rather see Duff given the captaincy. He is in good form, is someone I’d like to see stay with the club and is in a prominent position

Think Beye, would be a good shout – Genuine quality and passion for the club.

On another note im really happy with Mighty Joe and how he has approached his role at the club, granted he has had one game under his belt. But his level of communication, positivity and overall approach to the current mess the club has found itself in has been second to none, even KK was never this vocal in my opinion. Its been such a refreshing change to hear him constantly talking highly of the club and drawing on plus points instead of winging and moan like certain predocessors. From what i have read the players have taken a shine to him also – even Shay who was hugely critical – is becoming fan.

I really hope he can do a job with us – although i dont see him being able to take us to the next level and he is probably just greatful to be employed. i am really enjoying his comments even if most have to be bleeped out!! I would be more than happy to keep him at the club in some position – even if it is press officer!!

i personally dont like keepers to be captain but for 1 or 2 matches i would give it to shay he would relish the opportunity to be captain and even if it is the wrong thing to do in terms of what would be best for the team it isnt going to make a huge difference coz we need 11 captains in the pitch any way shay should still get it for a reward his loyalty because imo its out of him and buffon for the title of worlds best (tell me if im getting carried away) and he could probably go to any other club in the world but instead decides to stay hear and be the most underrated keeper in the world

Good news for monday, Petrov has been ruled out of the game! One of their most dangerous players in my opinion.

I must say I can’t believe people slagging off Butt this much. He hasn’t been shocking this season, he is maybe not our top performer either, but shocking, no, and yes he do make ocassionally rash tackles like at Everton, but he is still the best player to be captain atm, besides Given of course but he is trapped back at the goal so its difficult for him to give directions.

The captain’s armband for any team should be seen as an honour and a privilege by its bearer. However, that in itself does not make a leader. What we need are leaders on the pitch – whether Nicky Butt gets the armband or not will not make much difference to his style of play or vocality. It could however make a difference to someone that has not had the armband and could result in an improvement in their play. Unfortunately I just can’t see that anyone really warrants it outside of Butt, Given & possibly Beye. Taylor already seems to have far too high of an opinion of himself already, so I’d cringe seeing all the Capt Taylor quotes & stories in the Chronicle.
