Ranger Gets Three - Aaron Spear Makes Appearance

October 19th, 2008 · 17 Comments

17 year old Nile Ranger has now scored nine goals for the Newcastle club and he scored a hat trick in Newcastle United Under-18s’ 3-1 win over Barnsley yesterday.

Nile Ranger - impressing quickly at Newcastle

The youngster signed from Southampton this summer – but no official word ever came out of the Newcastle club that he had signed. But that just about summed up the level of communication from the Newcastle club during the summer – none.

And remember all the fuss about trying to sign 15 year-old up and coming sensation Aaron Spear?

There was also no official word of him ever signing for the club, probably due to the huge upset on the last day of the season that eventually led to Kevin Keegan leaving the club.

Aaron Spear - made 73rd minute appearance as substitute

But we must have signed Aaron too because he came on as a 73rd minute substitute on Saturday.

Nile scored two in the first half and then completed his scoring after 70 minutes. Kieron Scargill did get a consolation goal when his shot was deflected past goalkeeper Andreas Arestidou. Andreas had been signed on as an emergency last week following the injury to our 18 year old Swedish goalkeeper Ole Solderburg.

It was good to see manager Joe Kinnear, Chris Hughton and Joey Barton at the Benton grounds to watch the game - that will help the youngsters understand they are important to the future of the club.

Newcastle United: Andreas Arestidou, James Tavernier (Phil Airey, 68m), Darren Lough (Stephen Folan, 74m) Brad Inman, Callum Morris, Jeff Henderson, Conor Newton, Greg McDermott, Nile Ranger, Sam Ameobi, Michael McCrudden (Aaron Spear, 73m)
Subs not used: Dan Leadbitter, Dan Williams

Reckon joe will give him a shot tomorrow?

Toon, that would surprise me as none of our managers to date seem prepared to play the youngsters. I can’t see Joe taking a chance like that especially as there are quite a few first team regulars now becoming available again. Personnaly I would rather see him and some of the others getting a run rather than Smith or Viduka even if they were available. Sometimes injuries are a blessing. :)

Ole Solderburg Ed? His name is Ole Söderberg =) talked to him last week, and he will soon be ready to start training again!

Nile Ranger seems like a huge talent! Hope he get some minutes in the first team soon!

    future number 9 ?
i saw the goal last week , jaw dropped .

  • 11 dan // Oct 19, 2008 at 15:09

I hope Nile Ranger is on the bench against Man City. I would like to see him brought on for Ameobi after about 60 minutes. He certainly seems to be banging in the goals for the reserves.

I think he could get a sneeky one. Can’t be worse than Ameobi and Xisco. Would they have scored 9 for the reserves by now?

Give the lad a go in the first team, dont let him do an Andy Carroll and get far to settled in the reserves, we want this lad to keep imroving giving him a taste shows him the level he needs to be at to get a regular first team position.

Dr. Ed Harrison is a retired IBM Consulting Group Executive who now has time, and lots of it, after 34 years at the American computer company, to write about his lifelong passion - Newcastle United Football Club.

Ed was born and bred in Newcastle Upon Tyne, and watched his first game at St. James’ Park in 1949 as a 4 year-old with his Mother and Father. He was told to look out for number 9 - Jackie Milburn – the great Wor Jackie - and was he fast!

In football terms Ed was a goalkeeper and played for Wharrier Street Primary School and Newcastle Minors (Newcastle Schoolboys Under-11), in 1956 and went on to play for Newcastle Schoolboys and Northumberland Schoolboys (Under-15) in 1959 and an England Schoolboys trial.

He was at Newcastle United for a couple of years from 1960 as an amateur, while still at school, and played with Bobby Moncur and David Craig, amongst others, for the Newcastle United Under-18 side (Newcastle N’s in those days), during the relegation season of 1960-1961.

Ed attended Heaton Technical and Manor Park schools, and then went on to study at both King’s College, London (BSc Electrical Engineering) and Newcastle University (PhD Computer Science). He played for Newcastle Universities and England Universities from 1967 until 1970.

But a short couple of years after Ed joined IBM in 1970, he was shipped over to the USA, with his new wife Madeline, a beautiful local Newcastle lassie.

At IBM Ed was in computer systems and network design for 34 years, and in his last 10 years at the company was persuaded to enter executive management. where he ended up running IBM's Americas' Network Consulting Group for 5 years from the late 1990s, and was instrumental in forming the IBM alliance with Cisco Systems in 1999.

Ed and Madeline live just outside Raleigh in North Carolina. Their twin sons Paul and Neil, and daughter Elaine, are now in their early 30s, live close by, and Neil has carried on the family tradition by becoming an avid Newcastle United supporter.

And one final thing that is so true - you can take the boy out of Newcastle but you can't take Newcastle out of the boy!

    Howay The Lads!!
