Oba Martins will start tonight as expected and interim manager Joe Kinnear makes a total of three changes from the side which drew at Everton more than two weeks ago.
Shola Ameobi and Sebastien Bassong come in for Charles N’Zogbia and Jose Enrique who both drop down to the subs bench.
Charles has been one of our best performers so his dropping to the bench has to be the surprise of the night. Andy Carroll also returns to the Newcastle substitutes, after finally recovering from a foot injury he picked up in July.
Joe has gone for Geremi on the right wing and Duff on the left with Ameobi and Martins up front. This game has come a little early for Jonas Gutierrez and he is not even on the subs bench tonight.
It’s yet another chance for Shola to show what he can do in a black and white strip, and we hope he can produce tonight, now that he’s starting.
Dietmar Hamman will start against his former club and Robinho also starts alongside fellow Brazilian Jo.
As expected Nicky Butt will captain the side tonight, in a game we really need to win and take all 3 points.

Why Joe ?? why ??
Should have went with an unchanged team, except Oba for Owen…….
Ameobi…..again….he’s like the Terminator….just keeps coming back …..

bit of a suprise for the zog!! but i bet he is back for the mackems on sat!! his pace is urgently needed, plus he has an eye for goal, expected ameobi to start but if its not working and he isnt interested get him off asap, you can ussually tell if he wants to play early on so we will have to weait and see. hard game a point a must tho!!

Zogs dropped for Duff… I’d like to see both of them play. Geremi looked pretty good in the Everton match though. I’d like to see Xisco. Ameobi has been given too many chances to deliver… anything. Hopefully he’ll prove me wrong. I guess we’ll find out soon enough…

this surely must be shola’s last chance, lets just hope he can take it at last, as for charlie being dropped ? that is very strange.
7 Jezza // Oct 20, 2008 at 19:37
This is a nightmare. While Man City will be fielding £50 million worth of Brazillian striking talent, we’re stuck with a guy who, but for a failed medical in the summer, would now be plying his trade at the wrong end of the Championship. When will we ever see the back of Ameobi? His contribution tonight will be as ever be negligable, just the usual getting caught offside time and time again.
8 Legs // Oct 20, 2008 at 19:38
I was just saying that JK kisses duffs arse. Nee wonder charlie is benched. Its sacrilege.
Its the managers choice like……. but i don’t get it. Every manager we get chooses the stale players every time because of their supposed “class”. Load of shite.

Good quality link to the match. Wait a few minutes for it to buffer first, then the picture is crystal.

You say “And Xisco, who we thought would start, is not even included as a substitute.” Yet he’s clearly on the bench you’ve put there? So I don’t know where that’s come from.
Im glad Bassong’s got the nod at LB but a bit unhappy Charlies been dropped, but then Duff is in the best form he’s been in for a while so we probably should start him.
11 Legs // Oct 20, 2008 at 19:42
Tom, I reckon you mean Duffs starting because he’s Irish!
Nowt to do with form.
12 KK FOREVER (Ross) // Oct 20, 2008 at 19:45
Legs-duff scored against everton and by all accounts had an excellent game midweek international game, set up keane’s goal after a good run did he not?
if he’s in form, play him. i’m not happy about zogs being dropped but if duff is showing a sparkle of old then he deserves his chance as does any player who’s performing.
ToonKing-that shola/terminator line was a good’n, had a right chuckle to myself when i read that one.

mark- wouldnt really call charlie a headless chicken. Lb isnt the position for him, he’s not a defender. in our midfield he makes a difference, good with the ball at his feet and pacey. final delivery isnt exactly perfect but he’s still one of our more dangerous midfield options.

the equaliser fully deserved, purely down to the fact that we’ve faught like nobodies business since we went quite shockingly down to ten men.
The challenge from beye was nothing short of brilliant, took the ball and that disgrace rob styles made another howler.
He apologised to bolton so he better apologise to us aswell.
bambi you absolute legend, what a hilarious goal. took his time and still scuffed it into the top bag. i’ll take that in a heartbeat though, good on you son.
Anyone see him blatantly tripped on the wing and the linesman just do nothing about it? its 10 against 12, or 13 apparently, because some of the decisions have been disgusting.
1-1 and joe’s half time team talk that are rapidly becoming a major factor in our games to come.

I love the way Ameobi “faked” that he was going to blast the ball and then he scraped the ball with the leather of his boot into the top corner. Pure class - I always knew the lad had it in him - NOT, hahaha, but who cares.
On a serious note. Im very proud of the lads after that harsh sending off.
I think that Obafemi and Coloccini have been OUTSTANDING!!!!
Butt has been average, but I love the way he has constantly been playing in the refs ear and getting us the 50/50 decisions since the sending off.
Bassong has looked decent, as has Duff, but I would like to see N’Zogbia come on for Ameobi later on in the gameso that we can play 4 in midfield and oba upfront with guthrie and Butt protecting the defense and Duff and Zog pushing forward…

@toonarmy08: I wish Shearer would stop flirting with us. He has no intentions of coming nor do would I be too pleased. His has no managerial credentials.
His only real asset would be that he can shut the fans up. I.e. Manage the fans. the last time we had someone like that he proved “unsackable” and abused his messianic status. We do not need another ride of that nature. We need someone of whom we can critical. Shearer like Keegan is beyond criticism.

Why oh why did JK take of Martins and Ameobi? - WTF?!?!? Martins having a great game. Ameobi was a handfull - weve had no threat since they oth went off. Bad decisions. F**k me we deserved this game!

I know, hoof it back to them?..

Anyone who says Joe Kinnear should stay on well heres the reason why.
He lost us three points when he took off Oba from the field, and then made another shocker by replacing Ameobi with a pathetic Carroll instead of putting on Xisco.
Two very poor decisions denied our boys a victory they really deserved.
Coloccini also disappointed me with Man Citys second goal - but he’d been brilliant up until then.
Duff, Martins, Bassong, Given, Guthrie and believe it or not Butt have had blinders.

What a Fu*kin’ surprize!..

Estranged,
If you think Ameobi played well, you are very very easily pleased.
He had an ok game by his standards but he was still out of his depth.
For a change the effort was there but unfortunately the skill and pace never will be…
When Martins went off we looked impotent up front but although I think the decision to take him off was a shocker well done JK for putting the spirit and belief back in the boys.
Had Zog come on for Ameobi, I think we would have taken all three points.

He took Martins off ‘cos he’s not fully fit!..

Fair result. I did not think we were going to take anything from this game but I declare myself satisfied. The problem here is you demand too much from any other manager but Keegan. Had Keegan been in charge you would be lauding what a brilliant and well contrived point. We are building and the spirit is there. Were were down to 10 men early, we had a mountain to climb.
Well done JK and to Shola.
