The biggest play of the first half was when a brilliant through ball to Robinho had Styles giving a penalty against Habib Beye and sending the Senegal player off – but on the TV replay is was definitely not a penalty and therefore not a sending off.
The slow motion replay showed Habib in fact made a good clearance and deflected the ball away from Robinho before he then brought the player down with his momentum.
So it was not a foul and it should not have been a red card. But that’s Newcastle’s luck and Robinho easily dispatched the penalty past a helpless Given.
Newcastle had been holding the talented City side until this time with Coloccini having a solid game at the back and Shola Ameobi making himself an Emile Heskey type player up front, giving the two City center backs a very hard time of it.
The penalty and red card were a terrible blow to this Newcastle side but that’s how it goes when you’re having no luck. Newcastle were able to hold the City side, even thought they were a man down, with Martins going to the left wing and Ameobi up front.
Newcastle had a chance after 35 minutes, when Duff had a chance from just 8 yards out, but his weak finish was saved easily by Hart – and Kinnear had his head in his hands and Damien should have done better - and he knew it.
And then after 43 minutes the incredible happened as a nice cross ball from Martins found Ameobi with the ball with two City players a round him. But somehow Shola managed to get the ball in the net for his first goal for the club in almost two years.
It was a good opportunist goal from Shola and finished off a very good first-half display from the 26 year-old.
But the second half promises to be a battle with Newcastle still in this game - and there’s time for some heroes in this Newcastle side tonight.

We suffer from not having players who can hold the ball even with 10 men - Martins was one who brought composure to our midfield, now we are fighting tooth and nail (and running ourselves ragged) for that one point.

Andy Carroll is a joke. clearly thought he was still on the bench for the final ten to fifteen minutes he was on the field.
so unlucky tonight, deserved a win.
that fake death claiming hair transplanting bugger. so unlucky.
coloccini was excellent, given excellent, duff excellent, SHOLA..christ, excellent, lol. brilliant effort from all of them, just really unlucky. if we’d had ten men on the field that could have been different, rob styles, pathetic!

Played with so much heart, excellent from the lot of us.

Soz, but Given was NOT excellent…He made a blindin’ save, but every time he got the ball he hoofed it back to them…Has the lad not heard of playin’ it from the back,,,What a waste!..& that just invited pressure, ’til they scored!..
…One save does not an excellent game make!..
…But, Excellent fightin’ spirit from the Lads, how different it could have been with 11 players!..Well done lads!..

For people who is blaming Joe Kinnear for losing the lead, he did all he could, I believe Shola wouldn’t score the goal if he didn’t train with Shola
59 ToonKing // Oct 20, 2008 at 22:11
Shola ??? sorry mate he wasn’t playing tonight.
It was some over tanned bloke….we should sign him, he played good.
60 ToonRich // Oct 20, 2008 at 22:11
Well I’m fuming at two people tonight…Firstly Rob “i dont have a clue” Styles, and obviously the diving little so and so I once liked - but not anymore!!
Lots of plus’s for us tonight I thought. The boys didnt shy out of tackles and we started to boss citeh even with 10men. Come on, the made 120 passes in the first half, yet only had 1shot on target and that was a penalty!! We deserved all 3 points and I think we’d have got them had Beye been on.
Shame Xsico didnt get a chance, but hats off to Strolla…he was a real handful and even managed to score the best sliced volley ever! LOL
61 JJ // Oct 20, 2008 at 22:12
Why do the sponsors just always give MOTM to whoever scores.
Ameobi scored one arsey goal which by all accounts he should have missed.
He didnt have the pace to get to any through balls.
He gave away countless freekicks for backing in and being off sides.
He did have one great through ball to Duff, but honestly, do you people really believe he had a good game just because he played slightly better game than normal.
Players
Given - 8(two great saves)
Beye - 5 (unlucky to get sent off)
Taylor - 7 (fairly solid,some good blocks)
Coloccini - 7 (brilliant first half, disappointing marking to concede the second Ireland goal)
Bassong - 8 (looked extremely solid, great passing)
Geremi - 7 (solid, did a good job)
Butt - 7 (captained superbly and solid)
Guthrie - 7 (kept the ball well)
Duff - 8.5 (best game he’s played in ages) MOTM*
Ameobi - 6 (arsey goal and clumsy on the ball but tried hard)
Martins - 8.5 (keptthe ball well and caused havoc for the Man City defense.
Kinnear - 6.5 decision to take off Martins cost us the win and should have replaced Ameobi with Xisco when he got injured.
But well done to get the spirit back amongst the lads.
62 ToonKing // Oct 20, 2008 at 22:13
Sliced volley…..hehe…people are going to call that ” The Ameobi” …..rofl…
63 Wigan Blue // Oct 20, 2008 at 22:14
My God
Kinnear’s done it ! He’s turned them into Wimbledon. Geordies the world over will be turning in their graves, and the Nigerian consortium will be feted throughout Newcastle. That a once proud club has come down to this…
The penalty - think he pushed him over before he even got to the ball, so it was a pen. Wasn’t a red card though. Neither was the compensatory yellow. Going to be a long sad season for you people…
64 tommy // Oct 20, 2008 at 22:14
yer, just im gutted about losing the win, so must be a bit of a downer for the team, despite having a good game.
65 Brazilian Geordie // Oct 20, 2008 at 22:16
I think the only good point for tonight was to see Butt playing very well again. My opinion.
66 ToonKing // Oct 20, 2008 at 22:17
I thought everyone did really well.
The defence were good overall, although the few mistakes by Taylor and Colo were punished immediatlly, but hey, this is the EPL.
Colo was immense though.
My hat’s off for Duffer tonight.
We made mistakes as usual, but the determination we shoved was exemplar and we could have won with 11 men as City are a bunch of primadonnas.
67 dougnufc // Oct 20, 2008 at 22:17
At least we go in to the Stadium of ***** with 6 points and that is 3 times of how many points Spurs has.
68 ToonKing // Oct 20, 2008 at 22:19
Butt was decent Brazillian Geordie, but he still made a few passes which made the earth stay still for a second.
69 JJ // Oct 20, 2008 at 22:19
Right Brazilian, I slated him before the game but Butt played very well tonight.
70 King Kinnear // Oct 20, 2008 at 22:21
Could not have asked for much more from the lads tonight. Dissapointing to not come away with all 3 points though.
With the inclusions of Jonas, Barton and (Owen?) next week I see no reason why we cant take all three points.
71 KK FOREVER (Ross) // Oct 20, 2008 at 22:23
JJ, he was putting himself about like a big striker should, which he hasnt done in years. Its not just the fact he scored a goal. yes he sliced it, but if you look, the control on his chest to take him inbetween the two defenders was actually what gave him the chance to get the shot away, albeit a lucky one.
played a good ball to duff, was going out wide and trying to hold the ball up, and he gave 100%.
to oppose your argument, his replacement Andy Carroll, looked like he couldnt have cared less. The lad jogged about at half pace not looking to go into any tackles, didnt attempt to make any runs in the dying few minutes when we had the ball in midfield, and at least twice, actually stopped and looked at the ref with the ball at his feet to see if the game could continue after he’d ended up with it.
there was one particular incident where he ended up with the ball, and zogs burst down the left, he stood and looked at the ref for around 5 seconds before deciding to make the pass, by which time charlie was offside, really dissappointed. Fresh legs should look to change the game with ten minutes to go, not blend in and seem happy to jog about doing nowt.
72 Greg B // Oct 20, 2008 at 22:25

KK Forever, I agree Ameobi tried hard and did ok, but I just dont think he had the quality to be a first choice striker. He is a squad player at best and I’d rather be giving Xisco a chance to settle into the premiership. Ameobi has had years and years to prove himself - and never has.
Now he puts in one semi decent performance and everyone is saying how great he is - which is a joke.
Carroll’s attitude stinks, dont know why he came on instead of Xisco. But we really needed to let Oba play at least another 10 minutes and replace Shola with Zog.
One break away goal with the pace of those two could have sealed it, and Oba looked more than fit enough to go on.

Why are setanta having Poll’s opinion? The man has no clue to ref a game. Wasn’t it Poll who gave the same player three yellow cards in one game before sending him off? what a joke, and the same goes to ROB(as in robber) Styles.
80 Brazilian Geordie // Oct 20, 2008 at 22:35
I’m sad although the brilliant display showed by the lads. We could have won or losed it, but they put their hearts on the match, and that’s what matters to me.
Oh, I’ll try to film ”globoesporte”, the mainly brazilian football program, tomorrow and show you how it works in Brazil. The press will say ”Oh, Robinho fantastic. One assist, one goal, absolutely great”. And they are so ridiculous that I can assure will not even show Newcastle’s goals.

85 KK FOREVER (Ross) // Oct 20, 2008 at 22:43
JJ-trust me, i’ve been one of shola’s biggest critics, and i wouldnt ever say he’s turned round his ability inside one game! what i will say was that he outdid himself tonight, havent seen him play like that for a long time!
i agree, i wanted xisco on aswell. Obviously kinnear thought the big man option to hold up the ball was the right way to go, and in theory i’d agree with him. However, carrolls encore wasnt what i was looking for. the lad looked like he just couldnt be arsed. i’ve heard poor stories regarding his attitude aswell and tonights performance didnt do a thing to change my mind. along with the charlie incident, there’s one that sticks in my mind with guthrie. He picked the ball up in midfield, and did well to turn his opposing man, he looked up, obviously expecting to see a few burst forward, and carroll was just standing alongside him, no attempt to make a run in sight. he tried to hold onto the ball for as long as possibly, obviously in the hope he could go forward. i think both butt and duff bust a gut to get forward (it was on the counter attack) as they had done all night, but they were too late.
Still, gotta look at the positives. like stuart pierce said, we played with alot of heart from the moment we went 1 down and i think we thoroughly deserved all 3 points.
86 ToonRich // Oct 20, 2008 at 22:45
“Now he puts in one semi decent performance and everyone is saying how great he is - which is a joke.”
JJ, put this spin on it for a min…Shola did what he’s paid to do, cause defenders problems and score goals. Yes it was a flukey one, but it put us right back in it, dont you think?
We’re singing his praise for tonight…thats all!
87 KK FOREVER (Ross) // Oct 20, 2008 at 22:49
Jesus no wonder graham poll is no longer a referee. he’s trying to compare the beye tackle with dawsons yesterday. literally unbeleivable.
dawson comes over the top of the ball, studs up and makes a malicious tackle which ends in him fully connecting with the fellas shin. beye wraps his foot round robinho, takes the ball, changes its course, and momentum naturally takes robinho down with it. never, ever a penalty. not in a million years, we should appeal the red card without doubt.
88 Punk Skunk // Oct 20, 2008 at 22:50

Well said Punk, Ameobi did well tonight, fair play to the lad. A few more performances like than and with a bit of confidence could well be a decent option when we dont have Martins, Owen and Viduka all fit.
Would have liked to see Nile Ranger given a pop tonight instead of Carroll.
