Nicky Butt To Lead Newcastle Tonight

October 20th, 2008 · 47 Comments

It seems odds on that Joe Kinnear will appoint Nicky Butt as his stand-in captain for Michael Owen tonight, against Manchester City.

Nicky Butt - will captain Newcastle tonight

Joe Kinnear told the Evening Chronicle today:

“Nicky Butt will probably be our captain tonight in the absence of Michael Owen.” “He is a true professional and a leader of men, with a vast amount of experience.”“Let’s not try and ignore the fact that these are difficult times for Newcastle United, and we need people like Nicky Butt to show an example.”

“This is something he always does and I will be banking on him doing it tonight.”

Michael Owen, Mark Viduka, Alan Smith, Jonas Gutierrez and Ignacio Gonzalez are not available for selection tonight, because of their injuries.

Joey Barton will finally be available on Saturday after completing his six- match suspension, and he will turn out for the Newcastle Reserves side at Middlesbrough tomorrow night, to get some match practice. No doubt Joe will be watching him with Chris Hughton.

Of the injuries we have only Alan Smith and Mark Viduka are long term, so that’s some good news.

aye, that’s probably alreet, he’ll be more vocal and I reckon we’ll need that tonight…

    Ha’way the lads

  • 2 Toon Graeme // Oct 20, 2008 at 14:01

See you in SJP lads - those who can make it.

Me thinks £48K tonight in the stands.

  • 3 ObaFan2 // Oct 20, 2008 at 14:23

So how many pens will he give away tonight… by example :)

Not going to be an easy game and although I’m sure the team will get the support, we need a new owner in and our club settled asap.

  • 4 chuck // Oct 20, 2008 at 14:46

Hmm Nicky Butt eh!, bit slow in my opinion, on the other hand he`s the only real DM we have. Too bad Joey is out rather see him in there, fraid Butt is prone to getting caught and resorting to proffessional fouls, as is both Cacapa and Geremi and a team with pace like Man C. could exploit that.

  • 5 Punk Skunk // Oct 20, 2008 at 15:19

The last pen Butt ‘gave away’, should never have been a pen, as it was offside before it even happened…So, blame the officials on that one!..

  • 6 Punk Skunk // Oct 20, 2008 at 15:23

I reckon givin’ Butt the armband for tonight is fair enough…If/when Colo gets his ‘english’ together, i’d have him as capt…

  • 7 graeme // Oct 20, 2008 at 15:26

Give Butt a cattle prod along with the armband. He can use it to keep Taylor on his toes and awake!!!!

  • 8 AndyT // Oct 20, 2008 at 15:26

Pace and accurate distribution are going to be major factors tonight. Unfortunately that means Butt needs as much help as possible, because while he may be a leader and have tons of experience he has neither pace nor accuracy in his passing.

    Good shout Graeme… :D

  • 10 steve // Oct 20, 2008 at 15:41

  • 11 Turkish magpie // Oct 20, 2008 at 15:47

    Score predictions for tonight?
    And scorers

  • 12 Turkish magpie // Oct 20, 2008 at 15:48

    newcastle 2-0 man city

    Martins and duff

  • 13 Danish_Magpie // Oct 20, 2008 at 15:51

I would like our line-up tonight to be:

    …………………Given……………….
    Beye……Taylor…Colo….Bassong

    ……………Guthrie……Butt…………
    Duff……………………………..Zoggy

    …………..Martins…Xisco………….

With possibly Shola, Geremi and Enrique coming on…

However, I think the line-up Joe will choose is:

    ……………………Given…………………..
    Beye…….Taylor……..Colo…..Bassong

    ……….Geremi..Butt..Gurthrie………..

    ….Duff………………………………Zoggy
    ……………………Martins……………….

  • 14 Danish_Magpie // Oct 20, 2008 at 15:52

With regards to predictions, optimistically I would say 1-1 or 2-2.

    Realistically, I fear 0-3.

  • 15 Hugh Jorgan // Oct 20, 2008 at 16:18

    Let’s be positive lads !
    3-0
    Obafemi Martins hat trick

  • 16 Rasko a.k.a Hadji // Oct 20, 2008 at 16:24

My heart says 2-1 for the Toon

My head says 1-3 for City

  • 17 AndyT // Oct 20, 2008 at 16:25

Last time I was at SJP for a Man City game was when we won 4-3 after being 3-1 up then getting pegged back to 3-3 (I think 2 seasons ago?). Tonight could be one of those kind of games - hopefully we come out on the right side of the scoreline.

  • 18 Mac // Oct 20, 2008 at 16:30

    AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH.

I am so so nervous about the game. I just want to smile again when i think about Newcastle. Just think a result tonight and a win against the unwashed and our season is right back on track. However 2 bad results and we’re deep in the Shi*e

  • 19 AndyNUFC // Oct 20, 2008 at 16:40

Beye or Coloccini should be captain, Butt’s poor form does not make up for his experience.

  • 20 sirjasontooon // Oct 20, 2008 at 17:01

Expect a battering tonight….the squad really is shat to be honest and needs the dead wood shipped out.

I am going 1-3 to city…i just think they have far to much for us right now…but hey you never know JK might actually get the lads slightly inspired.

Shame Jonas aint back yet really want to see him put on a show like he did at man u.

  • 21 Punk Skunk // Oct 20, 2008 at 17:12

    The squad’s definately not shit!..
…They just need a couple of wins under their belts to breed a bit of confidence…
…Manc blow hot & cold atm & their defense ain’t all that either!..

  • 22 Punk Skunk // Oct 20, 2008 at 17:16

We just need 3/5 players in!..

  • 23 ObaFan2 // Oct 20, 2008 at 17:22

Indeed it shouldn’t have been a penalty, for offside but it was still a rediculous tackle and he does give free kicks away too due to bad timing.
I hope Butt does well as he can play really well and can pick good passes out too, just getting a little old and a little slower.

    I take ya’ point ObaFan2…
…Ya’ right, also players defendin’ should realize that, if you slide in, the attacker is always gonna try & make contact & go down…Sad state of the game really…

2nd what is the point in getting personal all i did was post a vid

  • 29 JJ // Oct 20, 2008 at 18:25

    Firstly

Nicky Butt is one of the worst players to play for Newcastle - his passing is terrible, he is too slow and he makes far too many mistakes for someone of his experience in danger areas.

Secondly, I fear Man City have too much pace in their midfield with Robinho and Elano and Petrov and Wright Phillips for the likes of Butt to cope with.

Thirdly, here to hoping Im terribly wrong and Man City play shockly and we win 2-1. : )

  • 30 Punk Skunk // Oct 20, 2008 at 18:34

    petrov’s injured!..

…& can everyone stop slagging our players off…
…While i’m no major Nicky Butt fan, i seem to remember him havin’ some excellent games for us in the last couple of years!..

  • 31 beyethegreat // Oct 20, 2008 at 18:38

i agree punk skunk though he is still a good player he needs to be used less than what he is now i realize we have no other options but perhaps that is a reason for his lack of form this season

  • 32 Big Dave // Oct 20, 2008 at 18:41

Well lads I still think JK is going to play Strolla and in a way I hope he does just to see if he can change as all the managers have tried him so he must have something going for him in training that they keep trying him. i’m going for a 2-1

  • 33 Punk Skunk // Oct 20, 2008 at 18:43

If swp plays like he did for mingland, runnin’ up blind allies & fallin’ over, then, whey hey!..

  • 35 Punk Skunk // Oct 20, 2008 at 18:46

    I agree Beye,
he’s still a good player, but like you say, he should probably play less often!..

…I’m just sick of this: He’s (whoever?) had a mare, let’s make his life a misery & get on his back routine…It’s Bullshit!..

  • 36 beyethegreat // Oct 20, 2008 at 18:56

punk skunk you may disagree with me on this one but i think pretty much all our players are good even smith he just needs some confidence booing doesnot help the only time imo you should boo is when you want a manager gone any other time is just pointless all it does is make matters worse 1 coz it lowers the players confidence and 2 it gives the media an excuse to get on our backs and lets be honest most of the time they dont even need an excuse

  • 37 Punk Skunk // Oct 20, 2008 at 19:02

    Totally agree mate…
…I’d never boo in a million years!..

…Y’dead right about the (de)press, waitin’ like vultures to pounch…Scum!..

…& even tho’ i never wanted smith to come here, i’d still never boo him, it’s counter-productive & counter-intuitive…& only ever makes things worse, like you say!..

  • 38 beyethegreat // Oct 20, 2008 at 19:03

    NOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!

    AMEOBI IS STARTING!!!!

    AND NO ZOGGERS!!!!

    :(

  • 45 KK FOREVER (Ross) // Oct 20, 2008 at 19:19

given beye taylor coloccini bassong geremi guthrie butt duff martins ameobi…

    starting line up .

hart, richards, dunne, ben haim, garrido, swp, kompany, jo, hamman, robinho, ireland for citeh i think.

dunno where zogs is sadly, and ameobi is always a potential disaster. However, he has been putting himself about a little more recently, like a bigger striker should. The fact that owen has been the one scoring all the goals for us and he isnt fit is always a knock of confidence obviously.
looks like its absolutly p’ing it down aswell.

  • 46 Legs // Oct 20, 2008 at 19:33

    No Zogmeister. How depressing.

He wants to get put on at some point like

I guess it doesnt help that JK kisses Duff’s arse like.

    Gutted.

  • 47 Punk Skunk // Oct 20, 2008 at 19:47

    As i thought…
…Woulda prefered Xisco over Ameobi like!..
    …But hey?..

Dr. Ed Harrison is a retired IBM Consulting Group Executive who now has time, and lots of it, after 34 years at the American computer company, to write about his lifelong passion - Newcastle United Football Club.

Ed was born and bred in Newcastle Upon Tyne, and watched his first game at St. James’ Park in 1949 as a 4 year-old with his Mother and Father. He was told to look out for number 9 - Jackie Milburn – the great Wor Jackie - and was he fast!

In football terms Ed was a goalkeeper and played for Wharrier Street Primary School and Newcastle Minors (Newcastle Schoolboys Under-11), in 1956 and went on to play for Newcastle Schoolboys and Northumberland Schoolboys (Under-15) in 1959 and an England Schoolboys trial.

He was at Newcastle United for a couple of years from 1960 as an amateur, while still at school, and played with Bobby Moncur and David Craig, amongst others, for the Newcastle United Under-18 side (Newcastle N’s in those days), during the relegation season of 1960-1961.

Ed attended Heaton Technical and Manor Park schools, and then went on to study at both King’s College, London (BSc Electrical Engineering) and Newcastle University (PhD Computer Science). He played for Newcastle Universities and England Universities from 1967 until 1970.

But a short couple of years after Ed joined IBM in 1970, he was shipped over to the USA, with his new wife Madeline, a beautiful local Newcastle lassie.

At IBM Ed was in computer systems and network design for 34 years, and in his last 10 years at the company was persuaded to enter executive management. where he ended up running IBM's Americas' Network Consulting Group for 5 years from the late 1990s, and was instrumental in forming the IBM alliance with Cisco Systems in 1999.

Ed and Madeline live just outside Raleigh in North Carolina. Their twin sons Paul and Neil, and daughter Elaine, are now in their early 30s, live close by, and Neil has carried on the family tradition by becoming an avid Newcastle United supporter.

And one final thing that is so true - you can take the boy out of Newcastle but you can't take Newcastle out of the boy!

    Howay The Lads!!
