Nicky Butt To Lead Newcastle Tonight

It seems odds on that Joe Kinnear will appoint Nicky Butt as his stand-in captain for Michael Owen tonight, against Manchester City.

Nicky Butt – will captain Newcastle tonight

Joe Kinnear told the Evening Chronicle today:

“Nicky Butt will probably be our captain tonight in the absence of Michael Owen.” “He is a true professional and a leader of men, with a vast amount of experience.”“Let’s not try and ignore the fact that these are difficult times for Newcastle United, and we need people like Nicky Butt to show an example.”

“This is something he always does and I will be banking on him doing it tonight.”

Michael Owen, Mark Viduka, Alan Smith, Jonas Gutierrez and Ignacio Gonzalez are not available for selection tonight, because of their injuries.

Joey Barton will finally be available on Saturday after completing his six- match suspension, and he will turn out for the Newcastle Reserves side at Middlesbrough tomorrow night, to get some match practice. No doubt Joe will be watching him with Chris Hughton.

Of the injuries we have only Alan Smith and Mark Viduka are long term, so that’s some good news.

See you in SJP lads – those who can make it.

Me thinks £48K tonight in the stands.

So how many pens will he give away tonight… by example 🙂

Not going to be an easy game and although I’m sure the team will get the support, we need a new owner in and our club settled asap.

Hmm Nicky Butt eh!, bit slow in my opinion, on the other hand he`s the only real DM we have. Too bad Joey is out rather see him in there, fraid Butt is prone to getting caught and resorting to proffessional fouls, as is both Cacapa and Geremi and a team with pace like Man C. could exploit that.

The last pen Butt ‘gave away’, should never have been a pen, as it was offside before it even happened…So, blame the officials on that one!..

I reckon givin’ Butt the armband for tonight is fair enough…If/when Colo gets his ‘english’ together, i’d have him as capt…

Give Butt a cattle prod along with the armband. He can use it to keep Taylor on his toes and awake!!!!

Pace and accurate distribution are going to be major factors tonight. Unfortunately that means Butt needs as much help as possible, because while he may be a leader and have tons of experience he has neither pace nor accuracy in his passing.

I would like our line-up tonight to be:

With possibly Shola, Geremi and Enrique coming on…

However, I think the line-up Joe will choose is:

With regards to predictions, optimistically I would say 1-1 or 2-2.

    Realistically, I fear 0-3.

Last time I was at SJP for a Man City game was when we won 4-3 after being 3-1 up then getting pegged back to 3-3 (I think 2 seasons ago?). Tonight could be one of those kind of games – hopefully we come out on the right side of the scoreline.

I am so so nervous about the game. I just want to smile again when i think about Newcastle. Just think a result tonight and a win against the unwashed and our season is right back on track. However 2 bad results and we’re deep in the Shi*e

Beye or Coloccini should be captain, Butt’s poor form does not make up for his experience.

Expect a battering tonight….the squad really is shat to be honest and needs the dead wood shipped out.

I am going 1-3 to city…i just think they have far to much for us right now…but hey you never know JK might actually get the lads slightly inspired.

Shame Jonas aint back yet really want to see him put on a show like he did at man u.

Indeed it shouldn’t have been a penalty, for offside but it was still a rediculous tackle and he does give free kicks away too due to bad timing.
I hope Butt does well as he can play really well and can pick good passes out too, just getting a little old and a little slower.

    I take ya’ point ObaFan2…
…Ya’ right, also players defendin’ should realize that, if you slide in, the attacker is always gonna try & make contact & go down…Sad state of the game really…

Nicky Butt is one of the worst players to play for Newcastle – his passing is terrible, he is too slow and he makes far too many mistakes for someone of his experience in danger areas.

Secondly, I fear Man City have too much pace in their midfield with Robinho and Elano and Petrov and Wright Phillips for the likes of Butt to cope with.

Thirdly, here to hoping Im terribly wrong and Man City play shockly and we win 2-1. : )

i agree punk skunk though he is still a good player he needs to be used less than what he is now i realize we have no other options but perhaps that is a reason for his lack of form this season

Well lads I still think JK is going to play Strolla and in a way I hope he does just to see if he can change as all the managers have tried him so he must have something going for him in training that they keep trying him. i’m going for a 2-1

    I agree Beye,
he’s still a good player, but like you say, he should probably play less often!..

…I’m just sick of this: He’s (whoever?) had a mare, let’s make his life a misery & get on his back routine…It’s Bullshit!..

punk skunk you may disagree with me on this one but i think pretty much all our players are good even smith he just needs some confidence booing doesnot help the only time imo you should boo is when you want a manager gone any other time is just pointless all it does is make matters worse 1 coz it lowers the players confidence and 2 it gives the media an excuse to get on our backs and lets be honest most of the time they dont even need an excuse

…Y’dead right about the (de)press, waitin’ like vultures to pounch…Scum!..

…& even tho’ i never wanted smith to come here, i’d still never boo him, it’s counter-productive & counter-intuitive…& only ever makes things worse, like you say!..
