There’s not doubt the Newcastle United crowd last night played a big part in the team’s wonderful 2-2 draw with Manchester City, which was so nearly a memorable victory for the gallant 10 men of Newcastle.
The Newcastle Crowd – the 11th man last night
The ground looked packed so we a little surprised to see the crowd was just 45,00, some 7,000 under capacity, but you would have never known it from the noise they made. And it was a great advertisement for the club that the game was beamed live around the world.
Certainly going down to 10 men after just 12 minutes with a controversial penalty wasn’t supposed to be in the script last night, and Geordie hearts sank when Beye was given his marching orders.
But strange things happen in football, and it almost turned out to be one of Newcastle’s most gallant ever victories at home, and the lads were only minutes short of getting all 3 points – which their performance fully deserved.
Joe Kinnear acknowledged the crowd today on nufcTV:
“They drove the team on – they were like an extra player,” “We had ten on the pitch and the extra man was in the crowd.”
“They gave the players an extra lift and the least we deserved was the draw.” “I said before the game how important the fans would be and they were magnificent.”
The drama that is Joe Kinnear managing Newcastle United is also very interesting to watch, as Joe seems hardly able to contain himself about how proud and honored he is to be leading the famous Newcastle United club.
Make no mistake, we are a very well respected club, despite the shambles going on right now, and those who know football know Newcastle is a very special place on the world map of football. Joe is very aware of that – and it really shows.
But two draws in two games, while the performances have been excellent – well at least apart from the first half at Everton, will probably not be enough to secure Joe any long term ambitions at the club. We think he’ll need to put a string of wins together for the new owners to be swayed, whoever they may be.
But that’s just our opinion – let us know what you think.
Comments very welcome – just keep them decent – many thanks.
