Barton In Reserves Side At Middlesbrough Tonight

October 21st, 2008 · 72 Comments

Joey Barton has just been named in Newcastle’s reserve side to face Middlesbrough tonight, as the midfielder attempts to get some real match practice in, following his long lay-off out of the game.

Joey Barton - plays for Reserves tonight

Barton completed his six-match ban last night, that was handed down to him by The Football Association, as he watched 10 man Newcastle’s magnificent effort against Manchester City from the dug-out.

If Barton comes through the game in good shape we would expect him to be on the subs bench against Sunderland, and be introduced to very loud booing at some point during the game.

Willie McKay is Barton’s agent, and is convinced Joey has turned over a new leaf and only too ready to prove this on the field. Willie talked to the Daily Telegraph this morning:

”After what he’s been through, there’s no way he will be daunted by playing at Sunderland even though it is such a passionate fixture,”

”Joey’s disciplinary record hasn’t been too bad so if he is selected he will be ready to make a fresh start and everyone can be sure he will give 100 percent for the Newcastle cause and show what a valuable player he can be for the rest of the season.”

We will not speculate on whether Joey has turned a new leaf, but he will need to get his head down and keep out of trouble, because he has to be on zero tolerance at the club from now on.

Also included in the Reserves tonight is Gateshead striker Andy Carroll, who made an appearance last night at St. James’ Park, and David Edgar also gets a game under his belt.

18 year-old promising Hungarian defender Tamas Kadar also gets his first run out of the season after finally recovering from a knee injury he picked up way back in July.

We expect both Joe Kinnear and Chris Hughton to be at tonight’s game, where some very good young Newcastle talent will be on view.  The KO time is 7:00 pm at Central Avenue, Billingham, and the very young Newcastle Reserves side will line up as follows:

Tim Krul, David Edgar, Tamas Kadar, Ben Tozer, Callum Morris, Jonny Godsmark, Joey Barton, Mark Doninger, James Marwood, Nile Ranger, Andy Carroll.
Subs from: Darren Lough, Shane Ferguson, Michael McCrudden, Brad Inman, Sami Ameobi, Greg McDermott.

    Barton will score.

Also we need a better right wing than geremi….seriously…

  • 2 Chris H // Oct 21, 2008 at 13:53

Members of the public were outraged to find several Spurs players playing football with a hedgehog. They were going to call the R.S.P.C.A but declined when they found out that the hedgehog was winning 4-0

  • 3 Ausgeordie // Oct 21, 2008 at 13:55

Nice one Chris. I have to say as gutted as I am by our position it makes it easier to know that my most hated team is behind us. Three points against sunderland and I’ll be stoked

  • 4 dougnufc // Oct 21, 2008 at 14:04

Richard branson has been asked to sponsor spurs but has had to decline, saying how can u have Virgin on the shirts of a team that gets f***ed every week..

  • 5 Bill F // Oct 21, 2008 at 14:13

Looks like a cracking reserve team with lots of first team experience. Pity Aaron isn’t getting a run out.
I was speaking to a Spuds fan today who was quick to remind me that Joe was in their team under Bill Nicholson. Love or hate them he was a class manager. Be great if he did half as well for us.

  • 6 dougnufc // Oct 21, 2008 at 14:17

    This team can thrash Boro

  • 7 Whumpie // Oct 21, 2008 at 14:21

I still cringe at the thought of that yob in black and white - just too much bad stuff on his book.

As for “Joey’s disciplinary record hasn’t been too bad” - only an agent could come out with that garbage.

I really hope that he can put together several seasons of text-book sportsmanship, performance and role-modeling… but I suspect he’ll be sent off in the Mackems match (if not tonight) and that’ll be it until he’s sold in January - probably to the burger van.

I really want to be proved wrong here.

  • 8 seetow // Oct 21, 2008 at 14:42

nice one chris.. i’m betting those spurs players were woodgate, jenas and modric :)

  • 9 Mark-O // Oct 21, 2008 at 15:00

    Whumpie.

All at other clubs mate, done nowt wrong for us. Last chance saloon tho.

anyone else noticed how Stephen Ireland is turning into Antoine Sibierski? He used to wear his dead Grandma’s hair piece last year and now he is a baldy coot! haha

  • 12 Born Again Geordie // Oct 21, 2008 at 15:10

Those of you still slagging Barton - please stop!

OK I do not agree with what he did - he served his time.

I do not agree with the fact he did what he did to his ‘team mate’ - he has served his ban done / doing his communitiy service.

Fact - he is in our squad.

Fact - JK as KK did, believe in him.

On his day he is a great player and god knows we need a few of them now. This guy will play with passion and will give 100%.

I will support him if the manager thinks he is fit to wear the shirt and can do a job for the team. Newcastle United has been getting s**t from every angle over the last two months. Lets galvanise and NOT keep turning on our own!

Did anyone notice the reaction Ameobi got when he went off last night - everyone around me stood up and aplauded him off the field. That is the support our players need - regardless of what they have done in the past.

    Rant over :)

    well said born again Geordie

  • 14 james L // Oct 21, 2008 at 15:48

is it just me or does any one else think we should let joe kinear have the job full time.

  • 15 Born Again Geordie // Oct 21, 2008 at 15:51

    Eaststander,

    Cheers mate !

I am a south east corner stander !!! lol

  • 16 broon ale // Oct 21, 2008 at 15:57

james L. its just you. it would be another Roeder scenario if he got the job

  • 17 M. Stockley // Oct 21, 2008 at 16:24

ive really missed joey, say what youlike about his off the field antics but for me he is a top player and i most concerned with what he does on the pitch…..good to have him back i say!

  • 18 Turkish magpie // Oct 21, 2008 at 16:31

I dont think joey will start against scuumberland because of butts great performance yesterday!

some people may disagree but Butt had a solid performance along with duff colo and bassong!

  • 19 Ashton // Oct 21, 2008 at 16:34

He is our best CM .

  • 20 M. Stockley // Oct 21, 2008 at 16:35

Turkish magpie- id prefer to see a barton/guthrie combo…but your right butt probably will get the nod, jfk rates him. this is the team id wanna see against the scum

    given
    geremi colo tayls bassong

    duff guthrie barton nzogbia

    jonas
    oba.
but i think butt and shola will start!

  • 21 toooooonfan // Oct 21, 2008 at 16:38

If Andy Carroll is one of the best talents we have coming through the youth ranks then i think we should be worried. last night he was awful he may look ok in the reserves but in the prem league he will struggle, he runs like bamby and has no fight about him whatsoever

  • 22 M. Stockley // Oct 21, 2008 at 16:42

i agree…i personally dont think carroll looks the part and i KNOW im likely to get shouted at for that, but my opinion.

  • 23 steve // Oct 21, 2008 at 16:58

Can people stop saying give JK the job full time, jeez he’s only had two games - people have short memories - remember Roeder!!!

  • 24 lesh // Oct 21, 2008 at 17:01

    Tut tut!

  • 25 beyethegreat // Oct 21, 2008 at 17:07

unfortunately i watched the game on a dodgy internet feed
appaarentley bassong played well which makes me wonder why he isnt in the france squad i mean surely if boumsong can get in bassong can

  • 26 Turkish magpie // Oct 21, 2008 at 17:10

    m.stockly why not beye rb?

his red card appeal should be succesful once he realises it cost us the game and a man for our derby!

  • 27 9 Shearer // Oct 21, 2008 at 17:56

Carroll is good probably JK told him to get onto the pitch to hold the ball and i think that is what he did.

Beye will win the appeal if he doesnt I will get to know that FA are not fair if they would remove Terry`s red and not his.

    For sunderland
    ………………….Given……………………………
    Beye…..Taylor……..Collocini…….Bassong
    Geremi……….Barton……..Butt………..Duff
    ……………….Ameobi…..Martins……………..
    Subs.
    Harper,Enrique,Cacapa,Jonas,Owen,Guthrie,Carrol

I think Jonas and Owen wont be that ready and Barton is going to impress tomorrow for a call. Butt is exprienced for the occassion.

  • 28 JJ // Oct 21, 2008 at 17:57

    james L

    Its just you mate!!!

Kinnear has got the spirit back but thats only because they now have leadership.
Unfortunately Kinnear is no good as a tactitian.
    A) He took Oba off to soon which put us under a barrage of attacks with 9 men behind the ball.
    B) He should have put on Xisco instead of Carroll.
If we got someone else in that can keep the spirit but be a better tactitian then we really only need two or three signings to be a quality side again.

Those signings for me would be A) Striker eg: Zaki, B) Midfielder eg: Nolan and C) another defender eg: Lescott.

  • 29 JJ // Oct 21, 2008 at 17:59

I got a feeling Beye’s card wont be recinded: So heres what I’d go with at Sunderland…

    ————————Given—————————

    Geremi——-Taylor——-Coloccini—-Bassong

    Duff———Butt————-Barton——-NZogbia

    ——————-Ameobi——Martins————–

Subs: Harper, Casapa, Enrique, Guthrie, Jonas, Xisco, Owen.

  • 30 JJ // Oct 21, 2008 at 18:01

    Ps.

    Carroll looked pathetic last night

    - week
    - slow
    - clumsy
    - didnt know what to do with the ball when he had it

Rather blood him by sending him on loan again.

  • 31 Tom_Toon // Oct 21, 2008 at 18:02

Carroll is a poor player, with a shocking attitude and dismal workrate, as showed everytime he gets a chance and at Preston.

Kadar back = Automatic clean sheet.

  • 32 9 Shearer // Oct 21, 2008 at 18:05

JJ, Oba was from injury and he had done enough for the game.

  • 33 Sun'lun's Burnin' // Oct 21, 2008 at 18:09

    @ 9 Shearer and JJ

Why in gods name would you pick nicky butt over danny Guthrie!!??!?!?!

cant believe what im reading! you obv havnt been to a game this season!! Danny G has been probs our best player, real class act and a great prospect. Apart from that JJ has it right. 9 Shearer - Geremi is rank!

  • 34 9 Shearer // Oct 21, 2008 at 18:10

Give carroll a break he will do well.

    3:0, NUFC reserves win.

  • 35 beyethegreat // Oct 21, 2008 at 18:15

    will we beat the mackems

  • 36 9 Shearer // Oct 21, 2008 at 18:16

Sun’lun’s Burnin’ , am looking at the reality not in my fantasy world. I love Guthrie to play but there is no way he will start before Butt and Barton.

Zogs started on the baench on a very important match yestreday.

  • 37 Tom_Toon // Oct 21, 2008 at 18:19

Why should I lay off Carroll who:

    1. Assaults women.
    2. Shows no work-rate.
    3. Wont close down a defender 3 yrds away after only just coming on in a game where we can hang on and get 3 points.
    4. Is an idiot to people on the street.
    5. Swear and tell 8 years olds to ‘f*** off’ after he got subbed at Preston.
    6. Has a shocking attitude.
    7. Has minimal skill.

  • 38 9 Shearer // Oct 21, 2008 at 18:20

beyethegreat, we are going to win, we are in the era of Joe Kinnear not Chris Hugthon.

I told you guys that we are done with a black september and we are now back to business.

    Barton is backkkkkkk

  • 39 9 Shearer // Oct 21, 2008 at 18:27

Toon_Tom relax keep the spirit for the derby we have to go make the loudest noise and bring down the stadium of light to the stadium of darkness…….

They are going to have nightmares of Joe Kinnear and his new Crazy Geordies.

  • 47 Rasko a.k.a Hadji // Oct 21, 2008 at 18:58

9 Shearer…..The reason i put Ameobi is cos of the tradition having scored couple of goals against Sunderland.

    Maybe Sunderland suits him :-)

  • 48 Heavy hitters // Oct 21, 2008 at 19:02

Do you really think it would work putting Taylor in a 3 at the back defence? Look what happened to poor Beye last night trying to cover his ass !

  • 51 kenny g // Oct 21, 2008 at 19:35

does anybody know why he hasn’t played in the reserves yet, if he has served a 6 match ban in the PL? surely he should be keeping his match fitness up to scratch at a lower level simultaneously…

  • 52 JJ // Oct 21, 2008 at 19:38

    Sun’lun’s Burnin’

I’d rather have Guthrie over Butt most times, but at the moment our team is leaderless on the pitch and I feel Butt offers the experience and calm head.
If we had another strong experienced player to act as captain on the day eg: Beye, then Guthrie would be there in place of Butt, however we dont…

  • 53 Tom_Toon // Oct 21, 2008 at 19:43

JJ - Barton will be the leader, play Guthrie.

  • 54 Big Dave // Oct 21, 2008 at 19:55

Tom Toon agree with you mate I think joey could be a good captain and wouldnt be afraid to voice his opinion.

  • 55 Toony Soprano // Oct 21, 2008 at 20:04

It seems that Andy Carrol is the new Shola Ameobi is it because we got a good performance off Shola last night so we need to find someone else to slag off.
i know the kid has acted like at tit in his private life recently, however i think alot of people are basing their opinions on 10 mins of football they saw last night - he is 19 years old so i think its a bit early to be writing him off so quickly

  • 56 AndyNUFC // Oct 21, 2008 at 20:09

Soprano, he’s 19, where the hell was his work rate? He had 10 minutes, so why didn’t he run his arse off closing people down? He’s the new Shola because he’s lazy and isn’t interested if the ball isn’t coming to him.

  • 57 Toony Soprano // Oct 21, 2008 at 20:26

    Andy,

i didnt see anything spectacular against Man city from Carroll either.

I will reserve judgement until i have seen him in 3 or 4 games not 10 mins. - i am not Andy Carrolls dad trying to make excuses for him.

I think that Joe K will get him sorted.

Joe K is doing a top job at the moment the communication and honesty that he provides is just the ticket. I also doubt that too many will piss up his back either

  • 58 Shot Bru! // Oct 21, 2008 at 20:27

There is no way Barton should play against the mackems, he needs to play at least 2 or 3 games in the reserves to get his match fitness back and then ease him in gently. If he plays on sat he will be totally off the pace of the game and probably get himself sent off due to frustration or commiting a coupla late challenges.

  • 59 Turkish magpie // Oct 21, 2008 at 20:34

the ref in arsenal match is a bigger f@nny than yesterdays game!

Fenerbahce should have had at least 2 more goals!

  • 60 Dan13 // Oct 21, 2008 at 20:38

i’ve seen Andy plenty of times and am really not keen on him at all.
He’s got a big ego along with most of the other tossa’s at the club and it shows on the pitch

  • 61 KK FOREVER (Ross) // Oct 21, 2008 at 20:47

Soprano-Carroll just looked so uninterested. Really looked like he couldnt be arsed. a young lad with a point to prove given ten minutes at a time like this should be running his b@ll@cks off whenever we’re looking to break on the counter and seal the game.
As far as his attitude goes, i’ve heard nothing but negativity sadly. Am i right in saying complaints were made about him when at preston due to his language on the bench?
He’s apparently assaulted some lass in newcastle..(to be honest, it could have been anything. she gets in his face, he lays a finger on her and shes on the phone to the police, no one knows the full story)
Then to top it off theres the story of him apparently acting arrogantly/abusively towards newcastle fans when approached on nights out etc. No one knows if any of its true, could all be rubbish but its canny shameful if theres any truth, in any of it.
He needs to sort his attitude out on and off the field if he wants to be at all successful!

  • 62 Tom_Toon // Oct 21, 2008 at 20:47

Fenerbahce have been shocking, well they have been all season, even Gokhan Gonul (who is normally very good) looks shocking, but he has just come back from injury.

It amazing how much better Galatasary are than Fenerbahce, and Fenerbahce is a team of old codgers.

  • 63 Turkish magpie // Oct 21, 2008 at 21:00

Tom_toon how dare you say that !

Galatasary will never be better than Fenerbahce becuz whos wun the turkish league 10 times? Galatasary! Whos won it 25 times? Fenerbahce!
Which turkish team is in the champions league?Fenerbahce!
and what team has beaten chelsea, arsenal, man u, a villa and even Newcastle (although newcastle have wun 1-0 before) but fenerbahce 4-0 in turkey. It’s a shame to see such a good team lose to scummy arsenal! and theyre only called the gunners cuz they have big flabby guns!

  • 64 Tom_Toon // Oct 21, 2008 at 21:02

Galatasary are CURRENTLY sooooo much better than Fenerbahce and have a much younger and more promising team with better players and a manager who is a muppet.

  • 65 Tom_Toon // Oct 21, 2008 at 21:05

    who ISN’T* a muppet.

  • 70 tanya toon // Oct 21, 2008 at 21:30

Lay off Carroll man, aye he is probably an arse. 10 mins is hard to judge anyone on, people are saying put Xisco on . Probs the same people slagging him off lately. Lets have a prediction for the Mackem game or a poll Ed.Who’s turn is it to get slagged.
Chisolms odds for bloggers to slag = 4-7 shola ,evens Carroll ,6-4 Xisco, 2-1 Geremi ,9-4 Taylor,5-2 Enrique, 3-1 Duff and 7-2 Butt.

  • 71 tanya toon // Oct 21, 2008 at 21:36

  • 72 Ian // Oct 22, 2008 at 8:42

Good use of the reserves, I do not understand why players who arent needed and off form arent dropped in to the reserves to see if they can get their winning ways back, as well as players like Barton who havent played for a while.
