Newcastle United interim manager Joe Kinnear has asked referee Rob Styles to rescind the red card he gave to Habib Beye, after just 14 minutes, in the 2-2 draw with Manchester City at St. James’ Park last night.
Habib Beye - likely to miss Sunderland game
Kinnear told BBC Sport:
“When he has a look and sees it was a fair tackle I hope he’ll be good enough to adjust the decision that he has made.” “It’s a hard thing to do, but sometimes it’s the truth that comes out.”
If the red card is not rescinded it means Beye’s come-back is short-lived and he will have to sit out the important game at Sunderland on Saturday. And it’s rather rare that red cards are rescinded, but we should hear the result within a day or two.
Kinnear continued:
“It’s not the penalty that I’m worried about, it’s the suspension, the loss of the player. We’re in a position where that’s the last thing we need to happen to us,” “We’ve worked on a lot of things - belief and organization are two of many things - and the players have been very receptive to anything we’ve put their way,”
“The players are thinking more, there is more chat, more organization on the pitch. They were a very quiet set of lads when I came but now we seem to have people who are prepared to take responsibility on the pitch.” “That all comes with results. People go into their shells when things are going badly. You have to bring the best out of players. You have to sit down with most of them individually because they’ve all got different personalities.”
“I’m really pleased and I feel we’re on the up. We’ve got key players coming back. We’ve got a massive game to look forward to next week and we’re going into that game with two decent results.”
It was a great display from the Newcastle side tonight, given the unfortunate circumstances, but we still could have done with all 3 points, and it’s such a pity that City equalized with just 3 minutes remaining of normal time.
To hear Manchester City manager Mark Hughes talk to Sky Sports after the game, it seemed like everything went against City and Newcastle got two lucky goals right out of the blue. Mark - let us remind you that it was Newcastle who were the team that were reduced to ten men.
But of course Hughes is now in the unenviable position of having to get wins, because otherwise his job will be probably be at risk, from their new billionaire owners.
We wonder which game he was watching. But there’s one thing that was plain to see, and that was Hughes’ star team were outfought by a hungry Newcastle United side, even with just 10 men.
Comments welcome.

I agree, if John Terry’s red card can get rescinded, Beye’s should as well. We need him for future games and luckily enough, this result turned out decently.

Every coach and manager that has worked with Shola have openly stated that he has huge potential, maybe JK is the man to bring that potential to the playing field.
I was very impressed that Shola managed to trick their keeper into thinking that he was going to blast it, then deftly sliced it into the back of the net. Well done to Shola, I sincerely hope and pray that this is the chance he takes, he truely loves NUFC.
3 Warwick Hunt // Oct 21, 2008 at 0:59
If that tackle had been made by one of the premier golden boys at Chelsea, Man U or Arsenal they would be talking for months on what a good challenge it was. But alas it was Beye playing for NUFC and it was a penalty.
I watched Setanta tonight and can’t believe Poll backed Stiles on that decision, fair enough Stiles view was resricted but Poll having watched replays still insisted it was the correct decision? He didn’t even have the dignity to say ‘it wasn’t a poor decision, just the wrong decision’.

Does anyone else think duff has been really good for us this year?
5 Aussie Magpie Fan // Oct 21, 2008 at 1:10
When the ref (blind git) blew for the pentaly and sent Beye off, I imediately thought… here we go again…… But to my pleasant surprise our boy’s played with two ingredients that we haven’t seen enough of over the past years… Heart and Guts..
They ran their a*ses off and really competed for every contest…. feeling very proud at the moment!!!… One more thing…. at least it wasn’t Nicky Butt giving away the penalty this time… Beye will be right for the next match, I reckon… common sense must surely prevail!!..

I was at the game tonight. Well played toon army for staying with the lads all night, was the loudest SJP I’ve heard in a long time.
Thought we had the 3 points, but still a great fighting spirit shown from the whole team, not alot of quality I gotta say but lots of positives to take from it.
Warwick Hunt, I admire your patience with Ameobi, but that goal was a complete miscue, and as usual he walked around tonight giving away fouls and being needlessly offside. He doesn’t understand the meaning of ‘taking a gamble’ as a striker and making those instinctive runs and has no pace at all. He is a Div 1 player at best, best of luck to him of course…

i was at the match tonight season ticket holder for many years. and i thought carol blew it for us tonight not willing to back track at all discrace get him out
8 Ever seen a mackem in Milan? // Oct 21, 2008 at 2:22
I havent been Shola’s biggest fan but after the sending off he led the line by himself. He held the ball up and won free kicks to ease the pressure. Mishit or not the goal got us back in the game and it changed the outcome of the whole match. He put in a good shift aswell and had to come off with cramp in the end.
9 Isaac Hunt // Oct 21, 2008 at 2:24
I thought that Ameobi played to the best of his abilities last night. He was battered and bruised at the end, but he was a total nusiance to their entire back four. He got a great cross in but Martins was on his todd and a great chance was lost.
I think that Citeh were badly organised in the middle of the park while we were the opposite. OK, Butt let a few passes go astray, but he kept things together.
Our version of Vinnie Jones is ready to play now. I wonder what he will do their kid, Kenwin, at the weekend.

johnb if i am not wrong you were watching nufc vs mcfc rite….
the one with a cry baby on the pitch(tipped to be next pele)
ameobi was very good last nite…..
he won almost everything in air, gave a gr8 through pass for duff
and when u are there as a lone striker and play a tough game u would give out some free kicks, did u forget how many free kicks we got yesterday…..
so just enlighten a bit
11 cyprus mag // Oct 21, 2008 at 6:09
Neeaj,
your wasting your time talking to some of these so called supporters, they’ve got a down on Ameobi and no matter what he does they will criticize. Imagine the reaction if it had been him not Duff that missed the sitter.
12 AltaBatalJoneN // Oct 21, 2008 at 6:30
neeraj- I agree.. johnb is wrong!!
I’m not a big fan of shola, but he was great last night. He played alone upfront, got the ball, held it up, won us many freekicks and that was the only thing he could do.. He is no f..ing Walcott who could take on the whole back-4 with his pace.. he is a similar type of player as Aston Villas Carew. except that Carew plays with confidence being a regular starter for years.
13 lesh // Oct 21, 2008 at 8:16
C’mon guys, Shola scored a decisive goal so give him the credit he deserves!
A disappointing one but a great result nevertheless.
Well done lads…. oh and joe for geeing them on.
14 BenjiToon // Oct 21, 2008 at 8:22
I haven’t commented on here for a while - I was just watching and waiting to see what Kinnear would achieve after a few weeks in the hot seat.
Well, I apologise Joe if I called you second-rate when you were appointed. I always thought you were a good bloke for taking the job but now I realise you actually have something we need - passion. Passion you can transfer to the players, and the ability to get them talking to each other too. Great.
Last night we looked like a different team. In recent years we would have crumbled after the sending off and penalty. And make no mistake Man City looked a good side, with goals in them. But we played so well with 10 men and deserved AT LEAST a point.
On Beye - never a sending off or penalty and red card should be rescinded, absolutely.
On Shola - a different player last night, committed and strong. Fully deserved to score. The new John Fashnau anyone? (Can’t believe I just said that!)
15 Toon Graeme // Oct 21, 2008 at 8:27
I was watching Setanta after the match and Pole and the commentator arguing was quality tv.
From the camera angle from where Styles saw the tackle it doesnt hold good and if that what the review board go with then it will stand.
However, what was the linesman doing and or seeing. He would have had 100% unobstructed view.
I hope that it gets overturned or it by by beye for 3 matches.
I was kacking myself for a vast majority of the match, but we played well for a ten man team.
Whats done is done and its mackems away next.
16 ronaldeano // Oct 21, 2008 at 8:36
I cant see Rob ‘pig’ styles recinding the red card, the whole crowd were chanting the referee’s a wa**er!!
Why would he do us any favours after that
17 KK FOREVER (Ross) // Oct 21, 2008 at 8:56
Toon Graeme-i was really surprised with burley standing up for us, he slaughtered the ref and then poll after the game in their wee stand off.
He then moved onto the linesman, saying something like
“the linesman isnt even level with the play, what is he doing. he’s supposed to assist the game, what is that all about”.
he bashed the other linesman during the game, when shola was clearly tripped, on the line, about a foot away from him, and he didnt flag for the free kick. he almost seemed quite genuinly angry about how terrible the officiating was, good on him. i complained to setanta after his comments at arsenal but he was certainly correct last night which im sure we were all greatful for. For once, a commentator/pundit getting behind us, and standing behind us even when he was opposed.
18 Mark // Oct 21, 2008 at 9:11
“that he was going to blast it, then deftly sliced it into the back of the net” yeh coz he sliced it on purpose lol
ameobi might be injured now though..hope carroll doesnt start for him..carroll seems like a slower version of ameobi
19 rooks // Oct 21, 2008 at 9:29
personally I thought Ameobi was poor - his normal gangly trotting style. I want attackers that attack, not try to hold the ball up every time they get it. And Carroll was simply awful.
Collocinni on the other hand was immense & I even though Geremi had a good game.
20 AndyNUFC // Oct 21, 2008 at 9:35
Bringing on 19 year old Carroll instead of Xisco clearly shows Kinnear hasn’t any faith in his ability, which I thought was the wrong move.
Xisco and Carroll brought the option of height to the bench, to replace Ameobi, so why wasn’t Ranger on the bench instead of one of them 2? That way we would have had a strike option of pace or height, and Ranger’s been banging them in lately.
Good result for a 10 man team, and bitterly disappointed that we couldn’t hold on for another 7 minutes. I have the strong feeling that the red card will not be overturned, so watch this space.
4 goals against the mackems and we go above them, howay Oba, hat trick for you and a goal for Jonas.
21 Karltoon // Oct 21, 2008 at 9:42
Aye.. I’d like to see Ranger have a decent 20mins in the first team! 9 goals in all competitions so far.. Mind, that was Carroll last season
22 Karltoon // Oct 21, 2008 at 9:44
I reckon Andy Carroll is a bit gash as well like.. Who’d you rather started Shola or Carroll?
23 AndyNUFC // Oct 21, 2008 at 9:44
Aye but Carroll could easily bang in 9 goals just because of his height at that level, but Ranger seems to have some pace and skill.
24 ToonRich // Oct 21, 2008 at 9:49
Just to comment on all the penalty stuff…Rob Stiles MUST rescind the card. He didnt do his job - as Birley stated in his commentary, the ref made no attempt to keep up with play, which the lead to him having the awful positioning to make the decision. I wish the FA would do something about all these incapable refs and their linesmen. The whole team of officials were pathetic lastnight, and dont deserve to be in that job. I’ve had better ref’s in sunday league games!!
Although Shola was committed, I’d have like to see him close down the defence a bit quicker, there were some parts where he looked really disinterested. Good on the lad for being in the right place to slice the ball in for the goal though
Also, I thought he was a menace, and caused the citeh def some real problems.
25 wigaz // Oct 21, 2008 at 9:49
He should coz it was terrible decision! tony adams used to make tackles just like that week in week out & he’s still classed by some as best def that played in prem, how long would he last in this soft league we have now! be sent off every other week! the refs have ruined our league! give far too much protection to fancy dan players like Robinio & Ronaldo. I’m a Mid & i used to look forward to watchin Man U vs Arsenal or should i say Keane vs Veira, 2 warriors playing with fire in their eyes & passion in their hearts. There is not many players like this in our league anymore coz they cant tackle without some prick ref wanting to make a name for himself & sending them off! Barton is the closest type of this player around & he is made out to be a villan! i h8 refs!!!!!
26 AndyNUFC // Oct 21, 2008 at 9:50
I’d have Shola start, Carroll seems to only have his height, because his work rate was gash yesterday. Shola sometimes tries to run with the ball and made some decent moves, especially his through ball to a disgustingly bad Duff shot.
On a seperate note, is it not time that Kinnear stood up and told Geremi to stop taking these p!ss poor dead balls?

3-0 would be -3, -5

Have you all seen Mark Hughes’ reaction to the game:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/7681232.stm
He claims:
1. 3 points lost for them???
2. Joe kinnear shouldn’t complain about red card because we were lucky with the 2 (????) goals
3. also reminds us of how bad man city were doing back end of last year, forgetting that evry man with sense knows how much they spent in the last transfer window.
IDIOT. he is sh*ting bricks, that’s his problem!
48 Toon Graeme // Oct 21, 2008 at 10:18

49 Born Again Geordie // Oct 21, 2008 at 10:18
Graham Poll, like Rob Styles, was, is and will always be a complete and utter w**ker!
loved the singing last night “who’s the w**ker in the green?”
Video replays for 4th officials now! How long would it take ? 20 seconds or so ??
Come on the FA lets use the technology available to us and try and eradicate the massive ‘human error’ that seems sp prevelant in the game today!
50 sweendog // Oct 21, 2008 at 10:20
will .. yep he’s got sour grapes alright .. I did think Man City are poor in the middle of the park .. theres no bite or control .. if we settled earlier we would have definately beat them .. but then again a referree has cost us 3 points again ..
Mind you I’m glad Hughes isn’t our manager .. never really rated him .. he’s not bad but IMO he hasn’t proved or done anything .. so many better managers out there .. and after watching our team last night .. Kinnear is much better than Hughes .. so hughes get over it and praise a man/team when praise is due..

i think shay is an excellent shot stopper, but watch harper when he,s in the sticks calmness personified.
takes his time with his kicks, shay is like a rabbit caught in the headlights when the ball comes anywhere near him.

skin d .. partly true but what about that save from Baldy boy…. given was full stretch down to his right .. when I watched that I thought .. gotta be save of the season ..
81 sweendog // Oct 21, 2008 at 11:03
skin d .. don’t think harper would have saved that one (even though I think he’s a really good keeper)
82 Flan // Oct 21, 2008 at 11:04
Sweendog—There was definitely something there alright because i think Taylor could of just put the ball out but he put ball man the lot over the line—- Great to see it — Bring on Saturday

Given could have been shoulder to shoulder even with Buffon if he was playing in a top team such as Barcelona,Man Utd,Malan,Inter etc.
84 Karltoon // Oct 21, 2008 at 11:05
I think Rio’s better than Vidic and Terry like..

sweendog it was a cracking save against ireland,i thought it was just me about the hair or lack of it,he looks like an al queda mad muller.
87 Rasko a.k.a Hadji // Oct 21, 2008 at 11:11
Karltoon….I put Vidic before Rio cause he has a better positioning than him and his aerial abilities to score a goal from corners.
Rio has a better tackling though.
88 Mark // Oct 21, 2008 at 11:12
maybe taylor and evans have a bit of history playing against each other? coz then sorta collided twice last night.
collo is doing a vidic..hes starting out shaky but give him time and hes gonna be colossal
and ireland, he makes me laugh trying to be a pretty boy (his random beard/sideburn thing).
89 Flan // Oct 21, 2008 at 11:16
Ireland is a degenerate tramp he’s following the long line of Cork men to turn their back on the country ala Keane.
90 Punk Skunk // Oct 21, 2008 at 11:21
Sweendog,
no mate, Shay has ALWAYS done that!..
…So, how many managers have told him to do that?..Accept it man, he doesn’t think when he has the ball & hoofin’ it is pointless when you have 1 man up top with no-one to play to…It makes the likes of Ameobi/Carrol etc look bad for not bein’ able to hold it up…But all they can do is head it on…I’m not sayin’ he’s crap, he isn’t…But like skin d said earlier…Well, he hit the nail squarely on the head in comment 79…
…It’s time to have a word with ourselves & get real…& to say Harper wouldn’t have saved that shot is dumb…Harper makes great saves also & you just don’t know how he ‘woulda’ done!..
…Like skin d said “Harper is calmness personified”!..
91 KK FOREVER (Ross) // Oct 21, 2008 at 11:31
regardless of what people are saying about shay that save was world class.
the power in his wrist to save the shot and stop it dead was brilliant. i guarantee with over 50% of gk’s, they would have got a palm to that but it would have been too powerful and went in, or parried back out for another attempt on goal. Simply the best shot stopper in the league.

If Styles doesnt rescind the red card he will be well on his way to refereeing Championship games next season. Ameobi almost put his goal past the post, he battled well but was a better player some years back. Colo had a very good game I thought but I felt for Beye as he ended up getting sent off having to cover Taylor’s ass as ususal. Overall I was really impressed the way we closed them down all game. I quite like Kinnear and at the moment he’s just the sort of manager we need. On Sat I would play Ameobi and Carroll up front simply because of the Geordie thing which might inspire them to give 100% against the unwashed !!
93 sweendog // Oct 21, 2008 at 11:39
Flan .. terry wogans another one ..
As for ireland .. I heard that he used to get slagged when he played for ireland about his wig he used to wear last year and thats one of the reasons he doesn’t play for ireland anymore .. never mind the spoof about his dead gran..
Punk Skunk as for Shay and Harper .. I think Harper is a class keeper to .. I just think Shay shades it in the shot stopping, whereas Harper is better kicking etc .. as for Shays save .. not many if any, keepers in the premiership would have saved that one .. never mind collected it afterwards .. you have to give him credit for that.
94 Flan // Oct 21, 2008 at 11:49
Sweendog your right about Ireland he got hair implants to cover his receeding hairline and supposedly Stephen Hunt used to keep putting him in headlocks and ruffle his hair and he couldn’t take the joke….although i wouldn’t think it would be hard to slag Stephen Hunt about his mop
I think Terry Wogan is from Limerick though not Cork.
95 Punk Skunk // Oct 21, 2008 at 11:50
Total credit to Shay mate, generally!..Top, top save…No doubt man…But, Harper kicks better, commands his box better, plays it out to the defense better & shot stops & is ‘calm’…
I’m not against Shay man, i just think we say he’s been brilliant, when he hasn’t been, particularly!..
…& i’m PIG SICK of him hoofin’ it back to them, watch next game & see if he carries on with that vibe mate!..
96 sweendog // Oct 21, 2008 at 11:51
Flan .. Woggies is a limerick man who calls himself british ..
97 sweendog // Oct 21, 2008 at 11:54
Punk Skunk .. hopefully they’ll have some game plan about his kicking as it should be on a game by game basis hopefully kinnear picks up on this but I reckon he’ll be happy shay punting it up to Ameobi with Owen/Martins/Duff feeding off the knock downs .. it just might work ..
but on the whole I agree .. if you keep the ball and play it out from defense you don’t get into as much problems with possession as we had last night..
but heh roll on sunday … I really do think we’ll win .. 2-0 is what I’m thinking .. much better squad with a much better attitude..
98 Punk Skunk // Oct 21, 2008 at 11:59
Got no prob puntin’ it occasionally, but with a man light, it’s a dumb idea, isn’t it?..
99 Flan // Oct 21, 2008 at 12:01
Ginola is on Setanta news talking bout Toon and Spuds.
100 sweendog // Oct 21, 2008 at 12:07
Flan .. whats he saying .. that spuds r sh*te and deserve to be cr*p seeing they believe they’re gonna be top 4 this season .. and they still believe they’re too big to go down .. at least our squad are fighting out of it .. spuds have to spend big on a striker in jan or they will go down.. whereas we need back up players ..
ie midfielder to replace Butt, Left back, back up right back.. CM playmaker .. maybe a striker ..
I thought we only needed a few come to think of it .. we need at least 5 players .. suppose thats why KK left, damn realisation and bad memories sets in
101 sweendog // Oct 21, 2008 at 12:15
punk skunk .. agreed punting it all the time is useless long ball football .. but its also for geremi, Collocini, Taylor etc to call for the ball or make space to receive the ball ..hopefully they can work on this as if we are beating the great unwashed 1-0 we’ll need to keep hold of the ball otherwise it’ll be one nervewracking game..
102 Bemused // Oct 21, 2008 at 12:50
I’m surprised no-one has commented as to why Rob Styles has told Joe Kinnear that he would give him a decision in four or five days !!!. For christ sake, how much arse covering does the ref want ???? surely he knows now that he made a mistake, but no doubt he’ll have to check with his bosses, check with the FA etc etc etc ……
We play the dirty mackem scumbags in four days……. we need to know now. How’s Joe going to prepare the defence when he doesn’t know who will be playing right-back ???? Utterly ridiculous, and this is at least the foruth such cock-up by Styles that I can recall.
I dare bet he comes out and says there was contact before Beye touched the ball just so he doesn’t look like a pratt again.
