Some of the Newcastle injuries seem to be clearing up at last, and there will now be some competition for places on Saturday, which has to be good news for manager Joe Kinnear.
Jonas Gutierrez - flying in training right now
But Kinnear will likely keep confidence with the players that performed so well on Monday night, in a game we did everything but win, and that was with 10 men.
Both Barton and Gutierrez are seemingly available and very keen to play in the tough game at Sunderland, but it’s not at all clear that either will make the starting eleven.
Kinnear said today:
“I’m delighted with the players in the side already, so it’s not going to be easy for Joey to march back in, but he’ll be involved one way or another, as will Spider-man (Gutierrez).”
“He’s flying at the moment. He’s trained very well with us, and he wants to be involved.” “There’s every chance that he could play a part in the match at some stage.”
“I’ve got him and Joey to consider, so the bench is looking very good. We’ve got a lot of confidence going into the derby.”
“I’ve been involved in London derbies on numerous occasions, but they tell me they’re nothing like this one.”
It’s good news that Joey and Jonas are doing well in training and raring to go, which means we will at least have a strong bench at Sunderland, and Joe will have some choices if he needs to change things on Saturday.
But we must go all out for 3 points on Saturday, which promises to be a full house at The Stadium of Light, where Sunderland probably fancy winning this game.
Comments welcome.

2 It Could Be Worse, We Could Be Spurs! (DC) // Oct 22, 2008 at 21:05
That would be awesome Wigaz! JB really endeared himself to me with his last comments. Really hope he goes on from here to reclaim all-England honors and writes himself into Geordie folklore. Such a talented player and with Guthrie there as well we could have a totally transformed, dynamic CM for the grand total 7M.
Whatever you say about Ashley and Wise they got some cracking deals from the transfer market.

I cant wait. I am starting to get some confidence back in the Toon.
What’s the difference between Spurs and a Triangle? Well a Triangle has three points.

What Barton said on SSN was amazing, never thought I would see this day. Future Captain?
8 Spyro // Oct 22, 2008 at 22:16
Barton and Gutierrez back for derby please
9 Ausgeordie // Oct 22, 2008 at 22:22
If we are losing at half time they will come on early in the second half but if not I think they’ll used for the last 20 just to give some tired legs a rest. I’d expect Geremi and Butt to come off for them. Martins needs to play the whole game but I would like to see Ranger and Xisco on the bench too as I cant see Ameobi playing the whole game
10 wigaz // Oct 22, 2008 at 22:22
Has anyone got the link to vid of bartons interview? it’s not on SSN online.
11 Punk Skunk // Oct 22, 2008 at 22:36
Hey spyro,
how goes it mate?..
12 beyethegreat // Oct 22, 2008 at 22:42
hes right in that this derby is a lot more intense than most in london i know arsenal and spuds hate each other but even though i have only been to 1 derby (the last 1 where the atmosphere was amazing) i think this has to be 1 of the most passionate in the country
13 tom tomb // Oct 22, 2008 at 22:45
Certainly is the most passionate in this country, but does not hold a candle to the Old Firm in Scotland.
14 beyethegreat // Oct 22, 2008 at 22:50
tom tomb agreed i ment england btw not the whole of britain but the old firm is apparentley amazing though imagine what it would be like to be at a boca - river derby or fener - gala the atmosphere would be like nothing else
15 Punk Skunk // Oct 22, 2008 at 22:56
Is there a bigger % of the away teams fans allowed into those games, than ours?..
16 beyethegreat // Oct 22, 2008 at 23:06
i dunno but i think away fans tend to get about 3000 allocated
17 Punk Skunk // Oct 22, 2008 at 23:07
Are those derbies all same town teams?..
18 tom tomb // Oct 22, 2008 at 23:09
Aye Beye been to two- unbelievable. A must do if you can ever get a ticket. A little bit devalued from when I went as they play each other every other week it seems now. The Derby’s you have mentioned would be amazing too, just feel that the old firm is about pure hatred. No noisy fireworks or flares for visual, just total noise and passion. Also since the IRA have ceased hostilities it has calmed down a lot.
19 Punk Skunk // Oct 22, 2008 at 23:11
Aye,
the old firm is not about football necessarily!..
…Tho’ i’m sure it is a lot more these days…
20 Bill F // Oct 22, 2008 at 23:13
Evening all, I think JK is using some Fergy style tactics and kidology and fully expect Jonas at least to start and wouldn’t be surprised if Joey did as well.
21 tom tomb // Oct 22, 2008 at 23:13
Yer right punk skunk, oh those derbies mentioned are same city teams.
22 Punk Skunk // Oct 22, 2008 at 23:18
What would the Toon/where(?) derby be like if we were allowed say, 10,000 in away games?..
23 Punk Skunk // Oct 22, 2008 at 23:19
Bill,
d’y'think JK is cunning or straight ahead?..
24 tom tomb // Oct 22, 2008 at 23:23
Immense punk, a lot of it is limiting tickets to avoid massive police costs. Can’t get much Derby fever on here though, still half term on Friday should allow some of them back on.
25 tom tomb // Oct 22, 2008 at 23:27
Well am away to kip boys, up early for physio tomorrow—-night.
26 Punk Skunk // Oct 22, 2008 at 23:27
Aye,
sad but true!..
…Should be a nice tense one tho’…I’m sure they fancy their chances this year!..
27 Punk Skunk // Oct 22, 2008 at 23:27
Later!..
28 Bill F // Oct 22, 2008 at 23:29
Punk Skunk, I think he’s both. I reckon the players know where they stand with him and he has enough nous to kid his opposite number. He didn’t do as well as he did at Wimbledon through luck.
I was as surprised as anyone when he was appointed but I have a feeling he could be the manager we have been waiting for. Still I’ve seen enough false dawns not to get too optimistic, yet!
29 tom tomb // Oct 22, 2008 at 23:30
They will but hopefully we are getting there, we could have done with another two weeks to get lads properly back but…….
30 tom tomb // Oct 22, 2008 at 23:31
Later Punk mate.
31 Punk Skunk // Oct 22, 2008 at 23:37
I feel exactly the same mate…
…There’s just something about the gadj that i like…But like you, waitin’ to see how it goes a while!..
32 Gateshead Mag. // Oct 22, 2008 at 23:44
Think the last two games we should of won, both against better teams than the mackems. Everton are a top 6 team.
City are quality, we had 10 men, and drew with them, should of even won. City trounced the unwashed at the sos not so long ago.
we’ll be just as up for it as them and with all the players coming back etc we’ll almost have a fully fit squad and the lads will be well up for it.
can’t wait!
HOWAY THE LADS!!
33 Punk Skunk // Oct 22, 2008 at 23:51
Aye…
HO’WAY!..
34 brutooooon // Oct 23, 2008 at 1:08
jonas back, we look a different squad
35 Mongo // Oct 23, 2008 at 2:00
Should be a very interesting game indeed.
I have a lot of ‘unwashed’ as friends/work mates and they are all asking if we are scraed of how many cisse is going to score! I asked them how is old bandy legs gonna score when Taylor/Coloccini snaps him in the first minute.
They do have a general belief that they are going to hump us. I think it is amazing, must be the first thing they have believed in since Giro day!
Bring on teh Scum and let our boys run them ragged. Jonas and Barton to start.
————————–Given————————–
Geremi——Taylor——Coloccini——–Bassong
Gutierrez——Barton——–Guthrie——Duffer
—————-Martins—-Ameobi——————
Geremi - Only if Beye is raped by the FA and they uphold his red card.
36 chuck CHUCK // Oct 23, 2008 at 3:38
Given
Bassong***Taylor*****Colocinni***Enrique
Gutierrez**Barton****N`Zogbia***Duff
Ameobi***Martins

PS Youse guys, yeah you know who you are, did you join in the standing O for Shola, still think he is useless ?
37 Ever seen a mackem in Milan? // Oct 23, 2008 at 3:38
Wouldnt start with Barton or Gutierrez. I would do:
—————Given——————-
Beye*—Taylor—Colo–Bassong
—————————————–
Geremi—Butt—Guthrie—Duff
—————————————–
——-Ameobi—-Martins——–
*if the appeal is succesful
And at about 75 mins i would throw on Barton, Gutierrez and Owen if he is on the bench.
38 BIGPEAOVTHEWEAB // Oct 23, 2008 at 7:37
i think with his sentence behinde him he will show y we paid the money we did for him he is a top notch player when hes not battering bairns that is hes not the first football player to go to jail and he certainly wont be the last o come on joey show us wot ur made of
39 LP_6 // Oct 23, 2008 at 7:56
i notice there has been only 1 mention of owen.
is anyone bothered? do people think he has the passion to fight for the toon on a derby?

off subject but again a good balanced article on Joey Barton from the Times today.
41 Born Again Geordie // Oct 23, 2008 at 8:19
LP 6,
owen is only mentioned once because he is injured - AGAIN !!!!!
42 graeme // Oct 23, 2008 at 8:33
I think Owen is running his contract down and will walk out on a “free” at the end of the season. He is entitled to talk to anyone he likes in January and we seem to be doing nothing about renewing his contract.
If we aint going to renew it, we should sell him in January window for whatever we can get. I dont think we will get very much for him though!!!
43 Born Again Geordie // Oct 23, 2008 at 8:39
graeme,
It is a fact and a sad one at that but I am inclined to agree with you.
Players come and player go but one thing is for sure that nonoe of them are bigger than the club!
Slight digression but I think it is really good lately that most of the chat on here is about the team and the football and not all this anti-ashley talk ! Like a breath of fresh air
44 Born Again Geordie // Oct 23, 2008 at 8:40
* sure that ‘not one’ of them
45 kizza // Oct 23, 2008 at 9:15
what is nile rangers goal to game ratio
46 Nick 69 // Oct 23, 2008 at 9:44
i would start both of them, expecially barton, hes exactly the type of player you want in a local derby, someone wholl get stuck right in there!!!!
something to get you in the mood:-

47 Toon Graeme // Oct 23, 2008 at 9:50
Ashley out!!!!!! Sorry couldnt resist.
Seriously though if MO goes then MO goes. In this tough economic climate I cant see anyone spending loads on players. I would like to see him stay - but thats between him, the club and who ever offer a huge paycheck. One thing is for sure he aint going to walk into another club and automatically gain the Captaincy. End of the day NUFC is a business and if the business is football and the aim to score goals etc then we need to Keep Mo. Im sure there are may opinions on this.
DDay for Beye - does anyone have any clue as to when we will find out?
Toon to win 1-2 on Saturday
48 ToonKing // Oct 23, 2008 at 10:02
anyone know where i could watch the whole Barton interview ??
49 Who is Derek Llambias? // Oct 23, 2008 at 10:06
the reason owen hasn’t signed a new contract is because there isn’t anyone to offer him one!!
New owners would try and tie him down I’m certain. That’s if there ever are any…..
50 Born Again Geordie // Oct 23, 2008 at 11:38
Toon Graeme (47)
Lol
Glad to see some people still have a sense of humour !

punk skunk the derby is political ,it,s an old civil war thing us and scumberland were on different sides, the rivalry has carried on since then.
54 raver // Oct 23, 2008 at 12:57
people think the old firm are special games, well thay aint. its just 2 of the biggest teams in scotland goin head to head and everyone gets excited cos the rest of scotland are shit. u look at derbies like real v barca and milan v inter river n boca, now thats what i call proper match day madness! with newcastle n sunderland up their to

Go Toon
57 Whumpie // Oct 23, 2008 at 15:46
You know things are improving when someone as good as Zog is left off team sheets on blogs…
Can’t wait for this, but I hope Barton’s only used as a sub late on. We may have been good with 10 men against Citeh, but I’d rather not repeat it!
Unless they’ve given him a personality transplant, he’ll rise to the provocation that Keane will have encouraged, and he’ll be off the field in 20 minutes.
Sorry to be a pessimist - but who are we kidding?
Still, that’s a side-show. I still think we’ll thump the unwashed, and I even suspect Shola may get another on the way.
58 Whumpie // Oct 23, 2008 at 15:51
On the derby thing: I’ve been in Istanbul for a Gali/Fenerbahçe derby. Ashamed to say that I stayed in my hotel room, as fans circled outside, sat on the rooves of cars waving large, sharp objects, including a hyaaaawwwwwge sabre.
I also had dinner at the Gali HQ… which is a man-made island out in the Bosphorus, for security reasons. Can you imagine if Spuds or Arse had to put their HQ in the middle of the Thames, just to keep the other side’s supporters off the walls?
We’re like best chums by comparison.
59 figsdad // Oct 23, 2008 at 17:44
madness so he would rather play geremi in the team over guti..
clearly saying they will play a part in sat game..
put geremi on the bench and play either duff on the left or upfront and zoggy and guti on the wings.
