Newcastle’s manager Joe Kinnear is looking forward to his first taste of the Tyne-Wear derby on Saturday, and he’s now heard so much about those games.
Joe Kinnear - looking forward to Derby game
Joe told nufcTV today:
“I’ve played in numerous derbies in my career, the Arsenal and Tottenham derbies, and managed in derbies.” “But I haven’t done this one and, by all accounts, this is one of the best derbies in the country to be involved in.”
“It will be a great game for us to get something out of and I know what it means to the supporters.” “Hopefully we can go there and put on the same sort of performance like we have in the past couple of games,”
“But that won’t be easy because Roy Keane has done a fantastic job there and it will be a tough one for us.” “Having said that, the confidence is coming back in the players and if we can get Jonas Gutierrez and one or two others back then we could go there with an even stronger side.”
“The dressing room for me said it all after the Man City match, everyone was going around doing high-fives.” “Everyone’s a collective unit and there’s a lot of confidence now.” “So hopefully it will put us in good stead for the Sunderland game.”
We need 3 points on Saturday, that’s all we’ll say, and if we can get the win, it will be just fantastic for Joe and the lads.
Comments welcome.

3 points is what we hope for.
1 point would save face.
0 points would end Joe’s career here and give me no end of grief at work.

i,ve looked at some of their boards, they are coming across as confident.
i think this is bravado, they are sh###ing themselves.
i think they will go in as favourites to win,so the pressure is on them.
we can go there and play without fear, with all the cash they have wasted lets see how far it gets them on saturday.
believe me come 2.30 they will look like mugs.

our best possible team, is given enrique coloccini taylor beye, barton guthrie and butt in centre mid, and martins and jonas either side of owen upfront.
for sunderland, i would just love to see jonas, barton and martins back playing well and playing to the best of their ability.
we will need the midfield to be battling for ninety minutes to ease pressure of the defence, which why i think tough tackling guthrie, butt and barton to support the forwards is the best option.
my prediction - -2-2 draw.

I think they probably are confident - probably as they are favourites to win,
not that I necessarily agree…

hows it goin ed
10 skin d // Oct 23, 2008 at 12:50
imo they will view this as their best chance to beat us,ie turmoil etc,so the bookies will have them as favourites to win.
i know form goes out of the window,i know what you,re saying rooks i think they are poor side sunderland.
the money they have spent will have their fans thinking this is their best team they had had in a while.
the mackems will expect, but as i have said i believe the pressure is on them,we can go and play our normal game.
i think we have f##k all to worry about from them.

Owen was always gonna be out of this game…Still think it’s a ‘tactical’ decision…Can’t drop Owen, the press would have a field, so he must be injured!..

arent udinese 2nd in italy
52 Micky Toon // Oct 23, 2008 at 13:52
So, is Kenwyne Jones playing on Sat? He’s a real danger and one of the Sunderland players I’d take in a heartbeat. He’s class. Shearer Rates him too, and he’s someone who knows a thing or two about scoring goals.
I remember not too long ago some people on here clamouring for us to sign Cisse, so don’t write him off, if he plays. Sunderland are no mugs these days, so this is hardly done and dusted.
Hopefully Ameobi can do the business against them like he did a couple of seasons ago.
Just thought that was three years ago this week! Reason I remember it was because I was in a bar in the canaries watching it with a couple of spurs fans who were still in there from watching the game before and they laughed at me calling Ameobi a local lad. His skin colour confused them I think.

Owens injured, wow, now that is a real shock, who would have believed that would happen. On the present basis Shola is a much bigger asset for the team.

Brilliant news, justice has been done. Does that mean we might also see Styles hanging from the Tyne bridge by his ba*ls (or something). Great for morale and great for Saturday. We should be able to field close to our best possible team.
62 Sptifire // Oct 23, 2008 at 14:42

Styles hasn’t got any balls he proved that by refusing to rescind the red card. Good job the FA have some (little ones probably)
63 garyfret // Oct 23, 2008 at 16:31
no doubt kenwin jones is a good player but to say hes a goal scorer dosnt make sence as he needs to prove he can get more concidering he only scored 6 last season. theres defenders in the prem who get more then that a season. i dont think sunderlands team are worth losing sleep over but they will think the same about our team at the min but i think we will be to good for them on the day.
64 briss // Oct 23, 2008 at 17:57
imo we must win this match. this is how kinnear will get his chance to stay long term and get the supporters doubts about his ability as a top class manager out my mind and out of most. i think he has what it takes but can he get it done when it matters most like? we will soon see. its a little unfair for him to be judged in such a short time but if thats what he’s here to do he better do it right to be considered, iye?
