FT: Sunderland 2 Newcastle 1 – Sunderland Win after 28 Years

October 25th, 2008 by Ed Harrison · 61 Comments

This is the worst possible result for Joe Kinnear, the Newcastle players, the Newcastle fans and the Newcastle club, as we went down at Sunderland this afternoon, for the first time in 28 years.

At half time things looked fairly good with newcastle having conceded first as usual, but then coming back and equalizing through Ameobi. But then a superb goal from kerien Richardson gave the home side all 3 points for their first win against Newcastle at Sunderland since 1980.

Joe Kinnear will not see just how furstrated Gerodies fans can become very quickly, especially after beibng beaten by their only derby rivals.

Forget about Middlesbrough they’re far too far south, but Sunderland is the game a manager must win to keep the fans on his side.

In this game the second half performance was just not good enough by Newcastle, and the changes were probably made too late to make any difference.

Richardson may have been out of luck at Fulham with his free kicks last week, but that will be forgotten with his stunning effort after 75 minutes, which handed Sunderland all 3 pointd and keep Newcastle at second bottom of the league.

And this is the season we were going to do dso well in – until keegan left after being lied to by the Newcastle Board.

The deciding goal was caused when Nicky Butt brought a halt to a great run by El Hadji Diouf and Richardson stepped up to lash a free kick into the top corner, past Shay Given.

Newcastle could not put together any response, Barton had no impact, and the margin of victory could have been greater had Cisse’s terrific drive not crashed back after almost braking the post.

2-1 is bad enough, but this will rock us quickly back to reality – that we’re not a very good side this season, and the sooner we get a new owner, and they get their manager in, the better is will be for all those who support the Newcastle club.

A win against WBA on Tuesday night, and if we cannot get 3 points there, it may be another relegation haunted season – again.

This is too much to take.

Piss poor!! Kinnear 2 late with his subs, not the future toon boss!

  • 2 p // Oct 25, 2008 at 3:00 PM

Barton seemed quite decent when he came on – shame he didn’t come on when Butt was ‘injured’ in the first half…
Geremi – appalling….. How is he still taking all of the free kicks etc.?
    Ameobi had his moments.
Oba didn’t get any kind of reasonable service.
Beye seemed scared to get involved.
Colo seems very unsure at times.
    Duff needs a new trick.
    Guthrie started okay and vanished.
Taylor was not really involved – passion????

  • 7 mackemmarra // Oct 25, 2008 at 3:04 PM

doon army, doon army, joe kinnear typical kick & run wimbledon tactics, 2-1, 2-1, 2-1 lol lol lol

  • 8 Fans Should Own the Club // Oct 25, 2008 at 3:05 PM

I thought Kinnear was too conservative today too, but I don’t think it should be the end for the man, unless we’ve got some master stroke genius manager lined up.

  • 9 p // Oct 25, 2008 at 3:05 PM

Seems the fans are going mental in the ground – fighting, police in and seats being thrown – more good publicity then??????? :(

  • 10 Terry // Oct 25, 2008 at 3:06 PM

Of course Barton had no impact, he came on with 5 minutes left and it was his 2nd game of the season.

  • 11 mackemmarra // Oct 25, 2008 at 3:06 PM

see ur advertising viagra on this site have a word with joe about giving ur crap some, doon army, 2-1 lol

  • 12 DanToon // Oct 25, 2008 at 3:06 PM

This should be the team at HALF TIME…

    …………………Given

    Baye..Taylor..Collocini..Bassong

    Jonas….Guthrie….Barton….Duff

    ……….Ameobi…….Martins

Shockin’ performance! We need Bill Gates or the like big time!!!!

  • 13 Shane Coghlan // Oct 25, 2008 at 3:07 PM

Grrr WE have to realistically look and compare the Sunderland and Newcastle squads and realise they have closed the gap quite considerably. Players like Duff, Butt and ameobi aren’t premiership quality. They have brought in Cisse and Diouf for example who we know are quality players. We really need new owners and a good clean out. On paper we don’t look like a better team than Sunderland any more

Our next game is one we should certainly win however and it is important we do otherwise we will completely ruin the 2 results we got against Everton and Man City which were superb and punching above our weight.

  • 14 bigbadrab // Oct 25, 2008 at 3:15 PM

BARTON HAD NO IMPACT? EH, THINK YOU NEED TO EDIT THAT, THATS THE MOST STUOID THING I HEARD IN AGES, HE WAS THE MOST EFFECTIVE PLAYER WHEN HE CAME ON, HE DID EVERYTHING RIGHT. STUPID COMMENT.

  • 15 Obafan // Oct 25, 2008 at 3:15 PM

Too many of our players are just average or below average:

Given: played a good game and had no chance to stop 1 of those goals

Beye: his worst game in black n white (is he fit??)

Collo: 1 mistake apart from that very solid. It also has to be said that I think it is very difficult to play next to a loser like S. Taylor.

Taylor: the worst defender in the EPL and he plays for us week in week out. They should slam his face every time he laughs after making another mistake. He does that every time. Go and clean shoes or something but stop playing football.

Bassong: his first bad performance in very difficult circumstances

Geremi: 1 good cross; the rest was awful. He also lost the ball childishly which lead to the 2-1

Butt: such an experienced player, but has to make the silliest challenges around our penalty area. He is a waste of space and I can’t understand the fact that the staff gives him an injection instead of just replacing him by Barton.

Guthrie: I saw him once today, when he got a yellow card for the rest I didn’t know he was on the pitch for the whole game. He is not worth to start, just a bench warmer IMO, nothing more.

Duff: good player with lots of skills, but he made one bad decision he should have passed the ball to Shola

Martins; needs the ball at his feet. But no what do our ‘CREATIVE’ midfielders do, kick high balls to him. had one very bad touch which cancelled a goal scoring opportunity.

Shola: played a good game, was a threat for their defence, but at the end he started to be the clumsy player again.

  • 16 Mark // Oct 25, 2008 at 3:15 PM

1 bad game and already people saying kinnear is shit etc etc..no not fickled at all.

  • 17 joe // Oct 25, 2008 at 3:15 PM

joe has got to take some of the blame for this defeat. Not because of his late substitutions but because he tried to defend for 90 minutes like sam allardyce. It was also obvious that jones was running bassong ragged so why try soak up the pressure instead of going for the win? The way the lads played after they scored the 2nd goal (eg. habib beye running up) wasnt part of his plan believe me.

  • 18 joe // Oct 25, 2008 at 3:16 PM

and no im not saying kinnear is shit. all im saying is that he had the wrong mentality of going into today’s game.

  • 19 bigbadrab // Oct 25, 2008 at 3:17 PM

JUST LEAVE IT EH, WE LOST OK, THERE ARE MORE GAMES COMING, IF ANYONE ASKS FOR JOES HEAD THEY CAN G AND SUPPORT ANOTHER TEAM!!

  • 20 briss // Oct 25, 2008 at 3:17 PM

Duff is premiership quality he did well on the left side today. geremi did set the goal remember and shola won some free kicks in promising areas. martins didn’t play his best but he didn’t get the best service mind. barton did what he could in the 30 seconds he had. jonas had no time to get in. Taylor worst player of the match, he gave cisse 5 yards of space in the box and kept him onside!!! kinnear didn’t do the best job but we have to look at this logically. we are a joke for leadership how can we expect the team to perform week in and out with the instabilty at the club all the time. i am not too upset just because we played worse last season at the shite and we got a point. we have promise for tuesday. mark my words we will win tuesday by a nice margin. stay positive lads HAWAY

  • 21 ToonRich // Oct 25, 2008 at 3:18 PM

Disappointing result by all means. The lads never really got going. In all honesty we could have lost that at least 4-2, so in that respect we were quite lucky that Cisse and Jones missed good chances. On our part we never made any clear cut chances, Oba was feeding on scraps and we kept playing the ball in to that bloody wind!
I feel Barton should have been given much longer. He looked pretty calm on the ball (not easy to do with 40k scum fans on ya back!), he kept it nice an simple and made the ball do the work. Geremi was crap (he even looked shocked to be sub’d), why dont we have any other set piece specialists??

My team for tues would be:
    —————–Given————————-
    Beye—Taylor—Coloccini—Bassong/Jose
    Jonas—Guthrie—Barton—Zog
    —————-Duff—————–
    ————–OBA——————-

Give Xsico & Ranger half an hour in the 2nd half :)

  • 22 paddyq // Oct 25, 2008 at 3:18 PM

i agree, barton played well for the short amount of time he got. probably should have been on for butt immediately after the goal. the guys played ok in tough circumstances but sunderland were better

  • 23 Hugh Jorgan // Oct 25, 2008 at 3:18 PM

Not a bad performance by the team, but to lose to that band of cheesy chip eating blue pop drinking pack of bastards makes my blood boil.

  • 24 Chris // Oct 25, 2008 at 3:19 PM

Dear God the mackems have finally beat us at their home turf.

I can’t see us getting out of the bottom 6 all season, we MAY not go down, but we’ll not be too far away from it at the end of the season.

I can’t believe how much we have fallen. I still blame Freddy Shephard for Sacking Bobby Robson and replacing him with Souness.

  • 25 AndrewNUFC // Oct 25, 2008 at 3:19 PM

I’m gutted. Kinnear was scared to go for it. Barton and Gutierrez both did well. We have to beat WBA on Tuesday, there is no other option.

  • 26 Toon Chicken // Oct 25, 2008 at 3:20 PM

I thought Ameobi had been born again at half time. Then he came out in the second half and it was a case of same old Shola, always sh!t!

Seriously, if a race horse had put in that kind of performance in the second half they would have been put down for being lame.

Did you see the look on Joe’s face after he tried to cross the ball into the box from the right in the dying minutes? I don’t think we’ll me seeing too much more of Mr Strolla from now on. Thank fook!

That aside, I don’t think it’s all doom and gloom. I t was tight game, as Derby’s should be. Yes, Sunderland edged it – they had more chances and more possession, but they were the home team – that is to be expected. On another day with another striker we could have come out of that game with a very respectable draw.

Onwards and upwards lads. The players seem to be prepared to keep the heads up – it’s only right that we should attempt to do the same.

  • 27 DanToon // Oct 25, 2008 at 3:21 PM

I’m not saying kinnear is shit, but the team he played came for a point n’ no more!!! Should have made the subs 20 mins earlier!! That’s not good enough for me, play 2 WIN!

  • 28 pak-toon // Oct 25, 2008 at 3:21 PM

does ameobi have two left feet?

  • 29 Ganiyu // Oct 25, 2008 at 3:25 PM

I hope spur would loose again

  • 30 Hugh Jorgan // Oct 25, 2008 at 3:26 PM

Shola nettted, but however he should have scored again and twice made a complete arse of both shots.

  • 31 Sav // Oct 25, 2008 at 3:28 PM

How you can single out Butt, who took his pain-killing jab and got on with it, and still provided one of the few cool heads, beats all.
    Some people haven’t a clue.

Agree it JFK took too long to get Jonas and Joey on and we looked the better side when he did. But then Shola is just not really up to scratch – FAR too slow for the Prem – so we didn’t do too bad under the circumstances. I was disappointed in Beye and Bassong who seemed rather overawed with the former only being let loose to press forward in the last 10 minutes.

  • 32 Phil,Gosforth // Oct 25, 2008 at 3:29 PM

2nd half was pretty poor.Too many long ball lump ups.
Butt again!Sorry but for me it has to be Barton starting in Butts position every game from now on.
He looked good.Him and Jonas back will mean WBA getting well beaten I think,I really do.
    Hurry up tuesday tbfh.
Joe too slow on subs, incomprehensible .

Was Beye on the pitch ?
He was anonymous for most of the game.

  • 37 bruTOOOON // Oct 25, 2008 at 3:33 PM

butt is our cause to BOTH goals. first goal, he never went back to cover for the defence before being cross to cisse. 2nd goal = his mistake cause a freekick which lead to the goal.

we should replace him by half time! jonas come a bit late, the bad thing about this is that, we CAN win the match – same goes to the everton and man city game.

Injury is no longer a problem

butt shud have been taken off immediately instead of a bloody pain jab. he was the worst player on the pitch. hes bad enuf fully fit but my god how can a man be paid thousands a week when he cant even distriubute

  • 41 M. Stockley // Oct 25, 2008 at 3:37 PM

barton had some lovely touches when he came on, he can pass the ball well. i was shocked at how bad our 2 full backs were today beye and bassong have proved their quality but did not rise to the occasion… butt up to his old tricks of giving away stupid free kicks… just wonder what may of happened if barton replaced butt earlier when butt look uncomfortable with the injury…guthrie’s name wasnt mentioned 2nd half, geremi is turd, duff works hard and tries to get things moving, shola isnt up to it, fairenough his header was good but he is the laziest striker in the world, oba is currently lacking any quality support….. id try this against wba
    given
    beye collo bassong enrique
    duff guthrie barton nzogbia
    jonas
    oba

  • 44 AndrewNUFC // Oct 25, 2008 at 3:46 PM

Kinnear didn’t have the bottle to get 3 points, Barton and Jonas should have come on 15/20 mins to go not 10. I thought Kinnear would have went for this, Shola will never become a good striker, he is such a poor player. If we fail to beat West Brom we are in lots of trouble.

  • 45 Nicky Butt is to old to play 4 Newcastle // Oct 25, 2008 at 4:05 PM

Nicky butt is far to slow and always gives free kicks and penaltys away,
gutierrez was brought on far to late as was barton and wen they were both on the pitch we were in control of the match

  • 46 dinosaur // Oct 25, 2008 at 4:09 PM

Hasnt Butt given two stupid penalties away this year, as well as todays careless free kick? Its like playing with 10 men against 12.

  • 47 Champion // Oct 25, 2008 at 4:32 PM

How many silly mistakes does Butt have to make before he’s dropped. Didn’t seem fit from the first whistle. Barton and Jonas both looked good when coming on hope they start against WBA. And Shola was a man of two halves 1st half he did reasonably well, 2nd absolute sh**e.

  • 48 bruTOOOON // Oct 25, 2008 at 5:17 PM

we need to replace butt ASAP……..

He is older by each day…

  • 50 Edd Case // Oct 25, 2008 at 5:31 PM

Everyone’s pretty much already summed the team up.

To put it simply, our team is dreadfull.

We wont go down I dont think but we’re not going to be far off the bottom.

  • 51 Marty-TOON RISING // Oct 25, 2008 at 5:45 PM

Our fans need to get a grip on reality. At the start of the season we were gonna get into EUROPE,What a joke it never was gonna happen.
We are gonna struggle but we will be ok.
We are not good enough. The best team won today,we had no Guts at all.2-3 plaers played today.
Kinnear needs a chance and some time.
Hull are in 3rd place after 3-0 today and they did not spend big, they just bought players that can make an affect in the PL.Strong and Fast players that also pass to their team mates.
Don`t need to shell out millions for that,it begins on the training ground

  • 52 MAF // Oct 25, 2008 at 6:13 PM

All our midfield is average or poor and Taylor and Beye aren’t good enough for the Prem. Bring in ten players in JAN.

  • 53 IndiaMag // Oct 25, 2008 at 6:21 PM

We looked utterly lost till they scored the first goal.. And I just hate Butt giving away free kicks and penalties.. Barton should be his replacement next match, who i thought had a good five mins.. Gutierez also should be ready for the next game.. I still think we have a good team and can get out of the bottom three by the next game.. I think we should give joe a chance even though this is worst possible defeat

  • 54 Timmers // Oct 25, 2008 at 6:36 PM

I’m livid but, its prob a reality check to a lot of fans that thought we’d easily win it. I’d love Shearer to be in charge but thats just a fans point of view-this may not help the players which is who ultimately have to get us out of the relegation battle. Also its gone ominously quiet on the sale front which leads me to believe as with the summer transfer, no buys for us. The current climate doesnt help but i cant see anyone taking the finicial risk at this point given our league position.

  • 55 daydeburt // Oct 25, 2008 at 6:46 PM

i thought both barton and jonas did well when they came on. i would definately drop geremi for jonas, butt needs to be replaced by barton, and finally the always nervous looking and ” kick it out of play” weirdo that is bassong needs to be replaced by enrique. Also we need to find a top class defender to challenge collicini and taylor to start. would love to see owen and martins fully fit every week upfront together.
ps; mark my words–bassong is horrendous!! he was horrendous at metz last season aswell.

  • 56 Tom_Toon // Oct 25, 2008 at 6:49 PM

Daydeburt you never watched him at Metz you muppet + He has been great until today and is out of position, he is better than Taylor at CB!

  • 57 Heavy hitters // Oct 25, 2008 at 9:18 PM

Absolutely gutted. Our midfield is the worst in the Premiership and Taylor is the worst CB in the country. In addition we have Ameobi up front, things arent looking good. I just cannot see how we wont get relegated this season. Anybody who says otherwise try and convince me we’ll stay up !
