Given – Atmosphere Tonight Will Be Electric

Shay Given has told the new Newcastle lads in the team what to expect in the Derby game today at The Stadium Of Light against Sunderland.

Shay Given – old hand at these derby games

Shay told nufcTV yesterday:

“I’m sure the foreign lads have played in derbies before, but the Tyne-Wear one is quite something,” “The atmosphere on Saturday will be electric and I’ll try to get the message across to them just how important it is to the team and the fans.”

“It’s the game we all look forward and it’s massive for both teams.” “It’s going to be tough though.” “They have signed a lot of players over the summer and they probably have a stronger squad than us at the minute but it’s going to be close – they always are.”

“They haven’t beaten us there since 1980 and they will be desperate to do so this year. But we don’t want to be the team that is the first to lose at the Stadium of Light.”

That’s just one reason we will see Newcastle fighting for all they’re worth tonight, but we also need points, and we need wins to get us up the table. If Joe Kinnear can get us a few wins before his time is up at the end of November, we’ll still be in with a fighting chance of qualifying for Europe next season.

Given everything that’s gone on so far this season, that would be a massive accomplishment indeed by the team.

lads every game is a must ATM although the spuds are in a fight so are we! Our performances and attitude have been great since JFK came along. There are some resemblances between him and Keegan and we arelucky Joe trew his hatinto the ring! Today will be our type of game we have skill and hopefully enough passion to win this comfortabaly even without MO. 3 pts today and the climb begins !

Not really on a night time but nevermind lol.

Like Geremi’s saying in that other article, I bloody hope we’ve got some players ready to stand up and fight. I can only see Colo, Taylor, Butt and maybe Beye who’s starting who’ll get involved in the nitty gritty of the derby that you know if Sunderland have anything about them will do to us aswell. We need the crunching tackles and push and shove (as legal as possible though), and there’s no way Geremi’s gonna risk getting his baldy nappa slapped.

newkyjas – yes you’re right – boy I was getting mixed up – thinking it was 12’45pm here in US and therefore 5:45 pm Newcastle time – so it starts in 2 hours !!!!
Good news is that we’ll be able to celebrate the victory earlier than I thought 😀

As long as they understand that there is NO hiding place in this game. Its about 100% effort and commitment, 100% of the time. There is no time for Taylor to have a nap and to go walkabout.

We need every man at the top of his game, plus a bit more, if we are going to win this game. Toon to win it 3-2 with Barton to score the winner in the 84th minute.

Graeme I can see Taylor as much as anyone as being on his toes today… which worries me, I think possibly he’ll get carried away with it and get caught out, positioning or pressure, something like that. If the lad can keep a cool head then he’ll be a hero.

I have not been following the progress of mackems this season apart from the what is said on SSN etc. It seems they have knack of scoring late.

The first goal is V important and it is a must that we ge it as it will knock the mackems. A 5 – 0 drudge like chelsea did last week would be lovely as would do we goal diff a treat. Doubt it like but hope spring eternal
