Nicky Butt Misses WBA Game Tonight With Knee Injury

Nicky Butt has finally lost his battle with a knee injury, after playing with painkillers during the Wear-Tyne derby on Saturday.

Nicky Butt – succumbs to his knee injury

It seems like Joe Kinnear is a huge fan of the 33 year-old former Manchester United midfield star, and thinks that his good defensive qualities should nicely complement the more attacking play of Joey Barton.

Joe told the Newcastle Journal today:

“Nicky Butt has been one of best midfielders in the world and gives something as well – stability – and he’s tough as old boots whereas Joey is completely the opposite,”

“Joey is more offensive. He likes to drive forward and link up play in the last third.”

But Butt’s absence means Kinnear will now have to give the captain’s armband to somebody else tonight, and we hope he gives it to his fellow countryman Shay Given.

The Ireland international will be favorite to have the honour, and we know Shay’s record when he has been captain is very good. We fully expect Shay to be handed the armband tonight , and we also hope we can get all 3 points, which will help alleviate our situation in the league a little.

That’s what we need the lads to do tonight, and then we can think about how we can beat Aston Villa at home next Monday evening.

Comments very welcome.

The only way we can win is by not conceding a goal.a draw would be my prediction but win my delight.

redknapp rejects newcastle job but jumps at the chance to manage spurs as it is his first oppurtunity to manage at a big club. what does that tell you about newcastle? Not even regarded as bigger than pompey!

Tough luck against sunderland by the way. I know what it feels like being inferior to your closest rivals. At least you wont have to suffer the humiliation of losing to them when you are in the first division.

AO…..What the hell are you talking about…..not bigger than Pompey, you know,i know and the whole world knows that aint true.
As long as we’re under Ashley nobody will come to us cos they’re not stupid to join a club who has a bast..d of an owner.

pompey won the fa cup and have a much better team as there league position proves. how are they not a bigger club. is it because you have a bigger stadium? if thats your logic you were bigger than arsenal till they left highbury. it is only those who live in newcastle who delude themselves e a big club

redknapp turned us down as he wanted to still live down south .. and probably he heard about this director of football stuff .. he wouldn’t have been interviewed if he wasn’ t serious .. its no loss IMO .. always would have and always will prefer Keegan to redknapp..

as for butt being out .. whoohhoo .. now for owen fit and maybe get back to playing enrique and we could have our best 11 playing together again .. its a team that will definately win tonight .. but to get rid of the worry we need to win well .. not sure about this though..

AO – Nice windup, but its more than likely the fact that he doesnt have to totally relocate his wife played a big part in turning us down and accepting Spurs’ offer. Although it was never confirmed he actually received an offer from us of course.

Lets hope Barton and Guthrie have a blinder tonight and keep Butt out for good…

I have a horrible feeling when Butt is back Guthrie will be droped which would be a shocking decision as Guthrie is twice the player Butt is

AO – That’s bollocks! He said that after turning down the Newcastle job everybody criticised him cause he couldnt handle life at a big club.. Now he’s at spurs on there 2nd time round of asking him!

Re: Pompeys league position.. 2 words ‘Spurs’ ‘Hull’

AO – he probably was offered it, although Newcastle did deny it, but maybe that was just to save face. Speaking honestly Redknapp will get the best out of your players by playing them where they will flourish, as has already been seen with Modric. There were people on here wondering why we didnt get someone in like Ramos when he was given the job, but even though you won a cup with him I could never see what the fuss was about as I thought you were very poor in the league with him, even last season.

Irish John ,my sentiments exactly .. butts lost his pace .. thats why he’s short on tackles .. still a good player but guthrie is better.

Old Arry wouldn’t have turned down Liverpool or Man u likewise he would never have been offered them .. the combination of Ashleys structure and him living down south put him off coming here .. still glad he’s not our manager..
as for turning spurs around, a blind monkey could see they need a Defensive midfielder who sits .. thats probably what his team talk was Zokora stop running and sit and tackle and let Modric attack .. against bolton I’m sure it was a very easy job.
now for the win tonight and Barton and Guttierez to cement their positions and hopefully N’Zogbia to play and play well.. then I’ll be happy.

Irish jon remember guthrie has a very bad temper though.

he got a yellow early in the derby which made him be very careful and almost scared of tackling. his red against hull got him suspended!

although danny is a class act , his temper may leave him out the squad

Turkish magpie .. not sure as he was fired up like ourselves for the hull game .. I think he seems level headed .. he backed out of the challenge that lead to the goal by richardson as he was on a yellow .. he just needs to learn that even on a yellow get a good tackle in.

Turkish magpie .. I reckon if we get the midfield of guthrie and barton working together our midfield will look very healthy.. we just need to use our attacking options better … N’Zogbia, Guttierez to sort out attack and help get Martins back into form.. good to see MO back for Villa .. its crucial as well to get at least a draw .. a win will push us away from relegation fears..

It wouldn’t really bother me if Butt was playing, the player I want to see out of the team is Geremi. He wastes so many chances to get the ball into the danger area by hitting the first defender. Ok, so he crossed the ball for the goal on Saturday, but how many times do you see him either hit the first defender or send it over everyone from corners and free kicks.

Sweendog, I agree with you about getting Zog back in to the midfield. Surely we can do something with Duff, Zog, Jonas, Barton & Guthrie as a midfield with Oba up front, hell we could use that midfield with Shola up front

I pretty much agree with you. I suppose you could also have Zog at left back, but I think he’s wasted there. I’d like to see Bassong given a chance at centre half and give taylor a break, he looks like he needs one. Up front, if they’re all fit i would have Oba and Owen or Owen and Viduka
