Oba Martins Dropped From Nigeria Squad

Nigeria Coach Shuaibu Amodu has named three uncapped players for the trip to South America – Solomon Okoronkwo, Oluwafemi Ajilore and Elderson Echiejile.

Oba Martins – misses long trip to Columbia (good)

Okoronkwo and Ajilore were part of the team that played in the Olympic final of the football event at Beijing.

But three top players have been left out and all play in the English Premier League – Obafemi Martins of Newcastle United, Chelsea midfielder Mikel John Obi, and John Utaka from Portsmouth.

But five other players have been included from the Premier league – Joseph Yobo (Everton), Danny Shittu (Bolton), Seyi Olofinjana (Stoke City), Yakubu Aiyegbeni (Everton/England), and Nwankwo Kanu (Portsmouth/England).

Nigerian captain Kanu, whose place in the team has been questioned of late, has nevertheless said he will lead by example, and is included on the long and tiring trip to Colombia.

Oba will miss the trip to Colombia, but we don’t think that will upset too many Newcastle fans, and maybe not even Martins. We need a fit and healthy Martins to score goals for the Tyneside club, as his number one job.

The Nigeria squad:

Goalkeepers: Vincent Enyeama (Hapeol Tel Aviv/Israel), Dele Aiyenugba (Bnei-Yehuda/Israel), Austin Ejide (Bastia/France)

Defenders: Joseph Yobo (Everton/England), Dele Adeleye (Sparta Rotterdam/Netherlands), Taye Taiwo (Olympique Marseille/France), Danny Shittu (Bolton/England), Chidi Odiah (CSKA Moscow/Russia), Yusuf Mohammed (Al Hilal/Sudan), Elderson Echiejile (Rennes/France)

Midfielders: Sani Kaita (Monaco/France), Christian Obodo (Udinese/Italy), Oluwafemi Ajilore (FC Groningen/Netherlands), Seyi Olofinjana (Stoke City/England), Kalu Uche (Almeria/Spain)

Forwards: Ikechukwu Uche (Getafe/Spain), Obinna Nsofor (Inter Milan/Italy), Yakubu Aiyegbeni (Everton/England), Osaze Odemwingie (Locomotive Moscow/Russia), Joseph Akpala (Club Brugge/Belgium), Chinedu Ogbuke-Obasi (Hoffenheim/Germany), Solomon Okoronkwo (Saturn FC/Russia), Nwankwo Kanu (Portsmouth/England)

He is nt on form, but he needs a few more games to become the old Martins again. His goal yesterday will help to get his confidence back

And a bit of a defence for our strikers; it has to be bloody hard and difficult to play forward when the whole team (esp Given) is just hoofing up high. Ameobi tried very hard to win the header but it was too difficult.

It was not to get on Given’s bakc as I think he has got his great form back (from before his injury). It was just to point out that it has to be very difficult for a player lika Oba to get on form as you don’t get much balls into your feet!

Bloody glad he’s been dropped, maybe it’ll be the kick up his arse he needs to tell him he’s not on form and doesn’t look interested.

Martins had a decent game scores and what does he get in this blog, criticism.
Given keeps us in the game with a couple of excellent stops, what does he get,” he hoofs the ball upfield”, F*****g morons !
Duff had an outstanding game, who gets praised Jonas who is as yet not up to speed.
Problem is there are too many people commenting who have a poor understanding of the game and just want to vent their biases against players they dont like.
Hoofing the ball my ass !

MArtins hasnt been on form but i think that he has had problems in the past with not turning up to squad and injuries which i think is probably the reason for his exclusion, simply because on form or off form hes twice the player of Kanu.

chuck players will do good things in a game and inevitably bad ,our right as fans is to be objective and sometimes critical of them.
chuck of course people will have their favourite players and players they dont rate, this game is about having opinions.
what do you want us to do see everything through black and white glasses,i for one will not do that.

Great for us. I think that Oba is very underated. Some of his passing was off last night but he always looks likely and lively (unlike, say, Ameobi – no disrepect for his efforts). I feel happier when Martin’s playing though we’ve still never seen evidence that Owen and Martins works in a 4-4-2 yet.

Chuck, actually, it seem you’re the one with the lack of knowledge.

3 points against West Brom, is 3 points taking us up the league. However the dress it up though, the performance was shocking against a poor side. The result doesn’t change how our team played and doesn’t pave over the cracks.

Just like Martins scored a goal, a goal which helped us win. However, he was disinterested and looked crap, in fact i’d go as far as to say his game against Sunderland was his worst ever for us. His goal was great for us, but it doesn’t change his attitude or how he’s playing.

I saw a team with atleast 6 players against West Brom look below the standard required to stay up and certainly not with the heart or determination.

It’s because Martins is not on form or we are not playing the game that suits Martins? I think it is the later.

In the first half against WBA, I thought Martins was doing quite well with the ball played on the ground. Well, second half was a different story and I think Martins looked as enegetic as ever, he just needs services.

No offence to Shola, but I thought Martins would have made several assists in the last two games had Owen being the partner stricker. Shola and Oba don’t understand each other’s game that well. Shola always run to far post and Oba was always looking to pass the ball to near post. They just need to talk to each other before the game.

Owen will only play a few more times for us as he will be leaving in January. Xisco looked well in parts on Tuesday but looked like he was trying to play the orders given by JFK to not run to far forward. The second half was shocking as we tried to shut the game down rather than hammer home the advantage. The Tactics where all wrong for thye 2nd half on Tuesday and would have cost us dear against a better team. Hopefully he learnt that lesson.

In all fairness he has’nt had the best support from the likes of Butt, Geremi, Duff and Guthrie of late.
