Newcastle United’s 2-1 win over West Bromwich Albion on Tuesday night was our first in the league since we beat Bolton Wanderers 1-0, in our first home game of the season back in August.
Danny Guthrie – win was massive relief for players
Danny talked today about the WBA game:
“We set out to get three points and that’s what we did,” “Tuesday was a massive, massive relief. It was a while since we last won a game so it was nice to do it at home.”
“It’s everything. It’s winning for the first time under the new manager, it’s winning for the first time in a long time and it’s winning just a couple of days after losing to Sunderland.”
“It was a massive relief, I can’t really describe it as much else.””
Guthrie revealed that the atmosphere in training after Saturday’s defeat against arch rivals Sunderland was not too good, but the lads put it together and got the victory – which was so important for us on Tuesday night.
“It was good we had a game so soon after Saturday, because it was a horrible day all round,” “We knew we had to pick ourselves up quickly and we did. That shows there is a steely determination.”
“We couldn’t really afford to dwell on Sunderland too much and that’s why we kept talking about it to a minimum. Once we got out of the dressing room, it was all about the West Brom game.”
“We have put that to bed now, by winning.” “We aren’t out of our problems but this (beating West Brom) is a big step for us,” “We have another home game, they are going well but this is a big boost, we can really kick on. All we can do is try to perform.”
“The next game is a home game, we will have our fans on our side. We can’t wait for that now. All the games coming up are winnable.” “After the Villa game we have got (games against) teams around us and we can get out of this trouble, we know we can.”
The lads have shown a lot of fight and guts since Kinnear took over the club, and we will have our next big test at home against Aston Villa next Monday night, in a game that is to be televised around the world again.
We’ll need a bit more class to win that one but with Owen, Barton and Gutierrez all back – we should be able to field a strong side, and hopefully we will have gained some confidence from the hard won victory against WBA.
Howay The Lads!!
