Owen On Bench But Kinnear May Start Butt

Joe Kinnear has said Michael Owen will start on the bench, but it’s unclear whier Nicky Butt will start the game in the middle of the field.

Joe Kinnear – Owen on bench but may start Butt

Joe told the Evening Chronicle today:

“Michael is now fully fit, but he really only has had two days of full training behind him and I don’t want to take any risks with him after his groin injury.”

“So he will start off on the bench, but he will still play a big part for us tonight.” “And what a player and goalscorer to have to come off the bench.”

Kinnear has only had Owen for just one game, since he took over as Newcastle manager, and that was his first at Everton, but then Michael was injured in training and has been out since then.

But Michael is still Newcastle’s top scorer with 5 goals, with Oba next with 3 goals and Shola in there with two with Charles N’Zogbia.

We expected Michael to be on the bench and it seems touch and go whether Nicky Butt will start the game, but Joe may go for experience with Nicky starting the game alongside the in-form Joey Barton.

Hey, another goal from Joey Barton would be very nice too, and if he scores he could go into orbit, with the enthusiasm he will show to the fans.   😀

Howay The Lads – we can do it – yes we can!!!

if butt starts it will have to be in a 4-5-1 formation, otherwise we will only have one creative player in the middle

Play Guthrie, he’s a better version of Butt.

Butt is so slow that he’s a liability, in games like this we need people who actually can run and track back.

Given; Beye, Bassong, Coloccini, Enrique; Jonas, Guthrie, Barton, Duff; Martins and Shola.

Pick this XI and we’ll come out on top.

Nah – start with Butt – although 4-5-1 is prob a safer bet surely we can’t play this way at home – we actually need to win this game
Guthries okay but Butt is still better regardless of the mistakes he’s made, guthrie has a tendency to get overwhelmed

This is no doubt a game that I would love to win but see it highly unlikely.

    @Tore Torell

This is what I have been talking about for so long that our expectations are simply too high for the resources we have and the circumstance we are under.

We are a club in limbo, revolt amid the fans some of whom are openly attacking our own players by writing hostile lampoons and verbal abuse against them; and uncertainty managerially and at ownership level.

These are not the ingredients to be challenging a team that is challenging for a Champions league slot.

We need to be realistic, A win will be beyond expectation and fantastic. A draw would be a strong result considering the above. A fighting defeat would save blushes.

Your remark informs me that you are the type of fan who has no regard of what goes on except on the football pitch on the day. There is far more to a club then match day in the staduim

I’m really confused with Butt, he can’t tackle, he can’t run, he can’t pass, so what does he bring to the team? I’ve never been able to work it out.

I’m quite nervous now, I think we’ll conceed early but we’ll fight back and get a draw, I’m putting it out there at either 2-1 to villa or 2-2.

I think Barton will be important tonight.

Come on the Toon! we need this win.

Murphy – Butts positioning is good but his legs are gone .. if Barton is there he needs to be disciplined which isn’t his forteit but still he is a better player ..

442 with guthrie and barton in midfield and spiderman and duff out wide .. we’ll win it with that ..
    Mon the Toon..

I think the crowd will dictate if we win this .. the 12th man will turn this game just like the 12th man worked for Spurs on sat …
We need to get behind the team tonight and forget about Ashley and his puppets.

Taylor wont be left out so i dont see why people keep guessing that Beye, Bassong, Colo, Enrique are going to start.. Wishful thinking i suppose (on their part not mine)

Butt is good, but his moments of class (which are hard to pick out) dont nearly match up with his moments of stupidity/laziness, so where as he’s probably a great player to have in the squad, it’s only gonna be his blunders that we pick up on.. Wish we’d have got Scholes instead of Butt at the time.. 🙂

Sweendog – spot on. The crowd will be a huge factor – let’s hope it’s all positive and no daft protests (except perhaps a warm and loud welcome to Milner to make a point) to marr things and put buyers off.

As for Butt, I’m not sure – I wasn’t that impressed with Guthrie against WBA, and you need an experienced head against opposition like this. But what if that head is on crocked, old legs that give away penalties and free kicks??

Dunno – but I think JFK will get it right.

Butt might play well alongside Guthrie, if he sits whilst Barton bombs forward. That being said, I’d prefer Barton/Guthrie to be given more time together.

Team I would pick tonight based on current form:

I would bring on Owen and N’Zogbia, and one of Xisco, Geremi, Enrique, Butt depending on what we need.

Team I think Joe Kinnear will put out:

With Owen, Barton and Geremi coming on…

    but let’s see.

Nice to see we finally have some competition again. Right now there will be strikers, gk, rm, lm, cm, lb and cb on the bench pushing to come on. Better than it’s been for ages.

Gotta be vocal in our support for the lads tonight

This just shows that the turmoil surrounding our football club season after season – sacking managers etc. – has had a massive affect.

We look at this game as such a difficult one, probably wont win, hopeful we wont get trounced, and to sneak a draw would be brilliant…. at home, against Villa…?

These are teams we should be beating, and we should be challenging for the places in and around where Villa are now. Its sad when I look at the table and only see a handful of teams (if that) where I think its a defo 3 points. Just think where we could have been if we managed to get Martin O’Neill.

But, looking forward, if we play well, a point tonight, 3 points next game – as long as all teams at the bottom dont keep winning – we should start climbing the table. Otherwise it will be a very nervous season. I think there are at least 3 teams worse than Newcastle but we need to start beating those teams.

    My team tonight would be:

Bassong (even out at LB he is better than Enrique)

Owen (even not match fit I would play him instead of Shola – we need a predator in there)

As long as Ranger takes his spot on the bench and gets a run out, I’ll be happy!

I’m saying enrique instead 0f Duff because he’s a left footer with a good shot! we need him to do well(or bring on bassong)

Ameobi behind martins because he’s been doing brilliantly winning high balls but martins is surrounded! If Ameobi wins them and plays them forward,we know what Martins can do!

Beye is an amazing overlapper always playing a ball and providing the cross!
Him and jonas do that perfectly

We can win this game by working in pairs!

    Enrique (Bassong)-Duff
    Ameobi (Owen)-Martins

Have to agree with most comments regarding Butt, his legs are gone.
Prefer Guthrie in the defensive role, possibly replaced by Barton mid 2nd. half.
Give Enrique a start , if he looks bad replace him with Bassong, who contrary to what i read can go forward and with pace if anyone has bothered to watch him.
Bring Owen on mid 2nd half for Oba.

    Beye** Taylor** Colo.** Enrique
    et al.
