We Were Excellent On Monday – Kinnear

10:26 am, Thursday, November 6th, 2008 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 18 Comments

Joe Kinnear has today praised Newcastle’s midfield duo of Nicky Butt and Joey Barton.

Joe Kinnear - we were excellent on Monday night

Joe, talking to the official site this morning has described their partnership as the heartbeat of the Newcastle United side, and we have to admit they looked great on Monday night, especially in the second half.

They were up against Gareth Barry and Nigel Reo-Coker, and Joey will no doubt have impressed England manager Fabio Capello, with his all round performance on Monday night.

Barton and Butt will again be in the middle of the park on Sunday, at Craven Cottage, so it seems clear that Joe will stick with his successful 4-4-2 formation, and decide whether or not to start Michael Owen aon Sunday afternoon.

Joe said today:

“Joey was outstanding in the game on Monday – him and Nicky Butt are the heartbeat of our side,” “The pair of them have been superb and have given us a real platform to build on in the games since I’ve been here.”

“Their performances are giving everyone confidence and you can see everyone else rising up and getting a lift because of their performances.”

“I thought we were excellent on Monday – we really deserved our win and the confidence and lift that will give everyone is immense.” “We go to Fulham now with our heads held high.”

“We’re only a few points off the top half of the table, which just goes to show how tight the league is, and there is a real confidence and belief in the players.”

We assume Joe’s voice is now back, and he must have been really pleased these last two days, as hopefully he had a few days relaxation, to reflect on our great performance on Monday night.

Newcastle performed so well, and with excellent fighting spirit, against one of the better teams in the Premier League this season. Now we have to continue that form at Craven Cottage on Sunday.

Comments welcome.

yeah they played well, but he shouldnt single out 2 players performances, monday night was a great team performance all round and everyone played as well as the next person, the only way to keep playing games is to keep it up and step it up… get the attacking pace going straight away against fulham, get a goal before the end of the first half!

was capello in the crowd like.? I was actually at the game so I never got to see any footage of who was in the crowd. I assume Bobby Robson was. There were a few robson songs ringing out.

No Joe your wrong, Barton was excellent, yes, but Butt was average. He did what a decent DM does, breaking the game up with decent succes, but the amount of passes he wastes is unreal.

Get Guthrie in there……………and also replace Duff with Zog and we have a superb midfield right there

I wouldn’t replace Duff right now. The guy is playing at the level he used to play for Blackburn and Chelsea. He is back to his best and you can see him growing in confidence with every match. Keep an eye on him and you’ll see what I mean. I am impressed with him as I thought his days were numbered, not anymore if he keeps this up.

Has anyone seen SSN this morning?
Villa have released a statement saying there was no racial connotations connected with the Barton/Agbonlahor incident.

Gutter press stirring things up again, Joey should sue them for defemation of character (tounge in cheek).

We were mint on monday, first time this season i’ve left St James feeling like we deserved the 3 points, i was disapointed against Man Citeh coz we deserved all 3 and the bolton game was extremelly scrappy. But we pretty much played villa off the park 2nd half and the didnt look like much of a threat! Bring on Fulham!

    :)

Duff is nowhere near as good as he was at Blackburn and Chelsea.

He has no end product and is flattering to deceive by running around in circles.

    N’Zogbia should play.

I like the fact that we’re arguing the toss between players that do well and other options who could perhaps do better. For so long it’s been about choosing between players who have all been poor.

Butt does have a poor completion rate, but some of his passes do come off in spectacular fashion, and his experience was valuable against a team like Villa. Against Fulham I’m less sure – probably a space for Guthrie once we’ve established dominance and want some goals?

I also think we should consider two things when reading quotes from JFK:
    1. They’re very edited, so while it looks like he may be just mentioning one or two players, it’s probably the case that he’s talked about most or all of them in the whole interview.
    2. Only he knows what the tactics were, so only he can really assess how well his players did what they were told. Apparently Butt did exactly what was asked of him – and let’s face it – it worked.

Cracking performance, and Jonas for me was the man to watch. He looks like he’s left the hanger in his shirt, mind…

I thought we were very lucky. Villa were so much better.

  • 12 Whumpie // Nov 6, 2008 at 11:53 AM

Same with Duff vs Zog – both scary to defend against, and healthy competition for the place. I think JFK may need to play Zog now and again to keep his toys in his pram, mind.

Oh, and yes, JP from The Rock, the match is live. 4pm on Sky.

  • 13 Whumpie // Nov 6, 2008 at 11:55 AM

Rob Davis – are you ‘AO’ by another name by any chance? Sounds like one of his attempted wind-ups. Just bored at work, praps…

  • 14 Spyro // Nov 6, 2008 at 12:06 PM

Villa were poor by their standards. They were visibly tired early on in the game and they had no Plan B once their wing play failed to have a great impact

Don’t be daft, take Duff out?

He is on form and getting better in every game!

Charlie has to prove himself in training, have the right attitude, work hard etc and he seems to be doing that so credit to him. If Duff fails to deliver on the day then Charlie will get his chance next time round. Im loving the battling for places at the moment at the Toon, not something im used to at all!

But no, Duff stays in there until he fails to deliver. I for 1 think he is doing very well at the minute. And deffo growing in confidence.

Duff out? dont think so at the moment.Besides It can only be good for a team when u can have wingers like Zoggz and Geremi on your bench.Oh and that bench has Owen on it too.Strongest bench we’ve had in a long tyme.
